years. Barbara established and managed the Charter Division at Allied Richard Bertram for almost 10 years, and was their sole charter agent. Some of the many mega yachts that she has arranged successful charters on include MOONLIGHT II, KOGO, ANDALE, and APOISE. She obtained her Yacht Salespersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s License in 2000 in order to offer another service to her charter clients who wanted to move to the next step of purchasing a luxury yacht and trusted her to guide them in the proper direction. She and her husband spend time aboard their boat cruising the Bahamas and Florida.

How to charter a yacht

For this exact reason, with only one phone call our professional charter consultants are available to help you select the right yacht, plan your itinerary and help arrange all logistics before, during and after your trip. Our aim is to make this process seamless and ensure you have the best experience.

SELECT YOUR DATES When planning your trip, let your charter consultant know the specific dates that you are looking to book your vacation. We recommend that you make your reservations in advance and that you have a few different dates in mind to ensure availability. You should keep into consideration that holidays and â&#x20AC;&#x153;eventâ&#x20AC;? periods are usually in high demand and are often booked several months in advance. Certain yachts may require a 10 day minimum charter during these busy periods. CHOOSE YOUR DESTINATION Let your charter consultant know the locations that you would like to visit. The Mediterranean is the most popular summer destination, especially during July and August, but you may also enjoy visiting New England, the Caribbean or Alaska. The Caribbean and the Bahamas are the most popular winter yachting destinations. Yachts in this magazine are categorized per destination, but most yachts are available for charter in the wider area. The speed of your yacht, weather conditions and availability in a particular marina are all factors that will determine the specific locations and number of ports you can visit during your trip. Entering certain countries may be restricted by the yacht flag or its size. Also, make sure that you have the appropriate visa permits to enter the countries you intend to visit. NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN YOUR PARTY On most yachts, the maximum number of charter guests allowed by law is 12. If you require a yacht that can accommodate a larger party, our consultants will make sure to find you a selection of yachts that are appropriately registered with a larger guest capacity. You should also take into consideration the number of separate cabins and beds available. CALCULATING CHARTER RATES Charter rates are quoted per week. Charters spanning for more or less than seven days are calculated pro-rata against the weekly rate (divided by seven or six respectively and multiplied by the number of charter days). Charters commence from noon onwards on the first day and terminate by noon on the last day. Some yachts have high season rates that apply to the most popular charter periods and low season rates that apply to all other periods. HORIZONS / 8

WHAT IS INCLUDED WITHIN THE CHARTER RATE? Charter rates include the yacht with crew service and all necessary equipment, properly insured for marine risks. Rates do not include VAT, provisioning, fuel charges, electronic communications, canal fees, harbor dues, local taxes and specific marina fees. If embarkation and/or disembarkation take place away from the yacht’s home port, delivery/return fees and expenses will also be charged. Crew gratuities are not obligatory, but it’s customary to leave 10% to 20% of the total charter fee, upon discretion and based on satisfaction. The best way to ensure that all crew members receive equal recognition is to entrust the distribution of gratuities to the captain or charter consultant. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO SECURE MY CHOSEN YACHT? All charters are subject to a fully executed contract. Once the availability of your chosen yacht has been verified, you will receive a Charter Agreement (MYBA), with a request for a deposit to secure the booking. The Charter Agreement defines the terms and conditions, obligations and rights of each party. A deposit of 50% of the total charter fee is required upon signature of the Charter Agreement in order to confirm your booking. The remaining 50%, plus an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), together with any VAT taxes, delivery/redelivery fees and any additionally agreed charges, is due one month before the charter commences. MAKING SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED ONBOARD Every detail counts. Several weeks before you board your yacht we will ask you to complete a detailed questionnaire describing the preferences and special needs for all members of your party. This sheet will cover dietary preferences, medical requirements, details on any allergies, favorite activities, sporting and entertainment requests. Knowing your preferences will enable us and the crew to ensure that you have everything that you need onboard. USING THE YACHT’S AMENITIES During your charter you are allowed to use all amenities on the yacht and enjoy it as if it were your own. When it comes to watersports and scuba diving equipment, in most countries a license is necessary for certain water toys (e.g. jet skis, wave runners and other mechanically propelled watercraft) and there may be an age limit. To utilize the yacht’s Scuba diving equipment, a certified PADI license or equivalent is necessary. If you do not have the required certificates, our team can usually arrange for an instructor to come onboard the yacht during your charter. IYC.COM / 11

Monaco, long associated with glamour and exclusivity is the perfect destination to start your charter. Begin your evening with a unique culinary experience at Louis XV before trying your hand at the roulette table at the legendary Monte Carlo Casino. Saint Tropez is a must see. Anchor for a swim off Club 55 on famed Pampelonne Beach, an extraordinarily long beach said to be the home of the bikini and one of its early proponents, Brigitte Bardot. SAINT TROPEZ, FRANCE

Quieter times can be had in the ports of Villefranche and St Jean Cap Ferrat, enthralling with their forests of aromatic eucalyptus, shady parasol pines and countless beaches for sunning and snorkeling. Cap Ferrat is both glamorous and beautiful, yet remains remarkably unspoilt. Spend the afternoon exploring the town’s old streets and venture to Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild set high on a hill, with dizzying sea views on both sides and a superb art collection. Cap d’Antibes is a peninsula between Nice and Cannes

known for its grand villas. The marina, overlooked by an imposing stone fortress, harbors several of the world’s largest yachts. Make a dinner reservation at the Eden Roc Hotel and enjoy the stunning views of the bay and beyond. Make sure to visit the Picasso Museum, housed at the former Château Grimaldi. The beautiful resort town of Cannes is primarily known for its international film festival that takes place during the month of May. The city’s famous mile long Boulevard de la Croisette is lined with upscale boutiques, sandy beaches and

palatial hotels. Situated at one of Cannes’ premium hotels is La Palme d’Or, the only restaurant in town that holds two Michelin stars. After dinner dance the night away at Bâoli, a nightclub frequented by celebrities. Just a few miles away is the island of Sainte Marguerite, where nature, relaxation and turquoise waters come together. The island is most famous for its Fort Royal, a prison where the alleged Man in the Iron Mask was held in the 17th century. In the evening wander down some of the smaller streets to find a tapas bar away from the masses and enjoy the tapas and wine that Spain is best known for. ■ Ultra Europe, Split, Croatia: One of the biggest dance music festivals in the world, Ultra Europe boasts endless beach parties and music, set against the stunning Adriatic Coast. In previous years the line-up has included big names including Tiesto and Armin van Buuren, and draws visitors from all over the world. ■ Nice Jazz Festival: Established in the 1940s, this long-standing festival attracts jazz aficionados from all over the world and has been titled the biggest, flashiest, and most prestigious jazz festival in Europe. ■ Giraglia Rolex Cup Regatta: From the race start in St Tropez, sailors will race 243 nautical miles through the Mediterranean to the finish in Genoa, Italy. This well renowned yacht race is in its 65th year and has been won by some of the most famous racing yachts of the last half century. ■ Soundwave festival, Tisno, Croatia: Organized by top London promoters, since its beginning eight years ago this festival draws many returning partiers. ■ Pyrotechnic Art Festival, Cannes: For seven nights throughout July and August, different countries take on the challenge to produce the most spectacular firework display. 200,000 spectators gather every night along the Croisette to admire the show. ■ Assumption Day, Greece: In every corner of the country, local communities hold a festival, each with its own customs and traditions to commemorate the “Dormition of the Virgin Mary”. he Aeolian Islands, named after the ancient Greek god of the winds Aeolus, are a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea situated to the north of Sicily. Breathtakingly beautiful and diverse in nature, the seven islands and many uninhabited islets of the Aeolian archipelago were claimed a Unesco World Heritage site in 2000. An amalgamation of stunning waters, rocky coastlines, smoldering craters and black-sand beaches is what makes this region truly unique. Each isle has its individual charm and the archipelago is a paradise for island hopping. Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and the most practical place to start your yacht charter. Lipari Town is a picturesque port characterized by its pastel colored buildings and stunning views. The excellent collection in the Aeolian Archaeological Museum is a must for anyone interested in Mediterranean history. Panarea, is one of the smallest and considered the most HORIZONS / 34

exclusive of the Islands. Spend a lazy morning wandering the cobblestone streets and browsing the elegant shops of San Pietro, then snorkel or kayak the natural tunnel at the south end of the small islet of Dattilo. If you wish to dine off the boat, the deck at the Hotel Raya is a fabulous sunset venue. One of the three active volcanoes in Italy, Stromboli experiences almost constant volcanic activity, issuing spewing rock and ash that tumble 3,000 feet and finally crash into the sea with great explosions of spray. Visiting yachts circle the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impressive rock formations to watch dramatic white plumes against the Italian sky. Thrill-seekers can take a twoand-a-half hour hike to the volcanoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crater and witness the unique sight of molten lava. The island of Vulcano has a growing appeal among travelers thanks to its hot springs and stunning black sand beaches. For anyone looking for a little ‘rejuvenation’ the island offers sulphurous natural mud baths in pools right at the water’s edge, known for their therapeutic benefits. For those looking for an easier hike, make your way up to the Gran Craters, which are an hour’s walk from the anchorage of Porto di Ponente. Although not as dramatic, they still offer impressive views of a volcano crater.

njoying time on the water is a hugely popular part of yacht ownership and charter and finding the latest and greatest toys and tenders is a constant goal for many yacht owners. With

many seeing water toys as the secret to charter success, ensuring the best and most varied selection for a yacht can be an enjoyable challenge. Luckily, with so many new and exciting products always coming to market there is always plenty of choice.

One new product making waves is the JetSurf, a revolutionary new motorized surf board that is fast becoming a must-have for superyacht owners and charter guests. Situated southeast of the mainland in the Aegean Sea, they are characterized by traditional white stucco towns overlooking the sea, picturesque narrow alleys and countless churches perched on the hills. Many of the islands are popular holiday destinations, while others are uninhabited providing for the perfect vacation “off the beaten path”. The cosmopolitan Mykonos could be a destination all on its own as there are numerous beaches, restaurants and nightclubs to explore. Anchor in Ornos bay and make your way around the island. Kiki’s taverna at “Agios Sostis” beach is the most picturesque restaurant in Mykonos and worth the wait. In the evening, watch the sunset from Galleraki Bar in Little Venice, while sipping on the famous Katerinaki melon daiquiri. Enjoy a traditional Greek dinner at Sea Satin, dancing on tables and dance the night away in the island’s bars until the early morning hours. Kato Koufonisi is an uninhabited islet accessible only by boat. This hidden gem has some of the most magnificent beaches in Greece, offering a range of secluded harbours to enjoy in

privacy. With only 400 permanent inhabitants, Pano Koufonisi is a tiny island where it seems that time has stopped. As you sail along the coast watch out for the Monastery of Kipouria, perched on the edge of the cliffs. You can imagine the life of the single monk who lives there, as you lie on the soft sand and gaze out to the deep blue waters that the monastery watches over. 4. Kleftiko Bay, Milos, This cluster of impressive volcanic white rocks positioned amidst turquoise waters forms natural caves and rare geological phenomena, which are certainly worth exploring. An old pirates’ hideout, the legend has it that there are several hidden treasures, which are yet to be discovered. Kleftiko has some of the clearest waters in Greece. 5. Seychelles Beach, Ikaria Situated 25km from the nearest town, and only accessible by boat or a tiny footpath, sit on the white sands of Seychelles Beach and let the striking blue water lap at your feet. Surrounded by unusual limestone formations, there is something distinctly tropical about this beach, and the lack of visitors and secluded cove gives it a particularly special and intimate feel.

CELEBRATE THE 4TH OF JULY IN NEW ENGLAND

very year the Fourth of July, marking American Independence Day, sees celebrations take place all around the US, with fireworks, parades, picnics, barbeques and more. One of the most historic and culturally rich regions in the United States, New England is also home to some of the best celebrations in the country.

Boasting a rich yachting heritage, New England is one of the most popular cruising grounds for superyachts and many will make sure to time their charter around the Fourth of July holiday. Celebrating on board a superyacht will allow you to enjoy spectacular sights of the exhilarating fireworks show while avoiding large crowds, long queues and wearisome traffic. An official holiday since 1941, festivities for the Fourth of July date back to the American Revolution in the 18th Century. If it’s history you are interested in, then Bristol, Rhode Island, has the most unique parade and the oldest celebration in the States, dating all the way back to 1785. The festivities include a concert series, a spectacular fireworks display, a drum corps show, a firefighters muster and a Fourth of July Ball. The archipelago of the Bahamas is formed from coral, creating 700 islands and cays that contain incredible reefs. These 365 cays are known for their laid-back way of life, and many of the rich and famous have homes here to escape to. The Exumas archipelago is a shallow cruising ground with depths that allow for private yachts but exclude cruise ships. The ambiance is therefore pristine and quiet, and many charter yachts have secluded white beaches all to themselves. Highlights in the Exumas include Big Major, where the resident pig Emily wades into the surf to welcome visitors arriving by tender, and Thunderball Grotto, where the James Bond movie “Thunderball” was filmed. You can still snorkel through the cave in which Sean Connery’s Agent 007 hid until he was airlifted to safety.
