UNDERSTANDING THE 55 There are 768 yachts worldwide that are over 55 meters, 9% of the global fleet. Within this segment of the market, 111 of these yachts are currently in build, 559 are in operation and 133 are currently listed for sale. The majority of yachts are between 55 - 80 meters, but the market is seeing the number of launches in the larger size segments increasing year-on-year.

Overall, 2019 was a busy year for the superyacht industry, with 687 new and used yachts over 24m sold, and 1,006 yachts new to the market. A total of 29 yachts were launched in the 55m+ category, over half of these (52%) are between 60 and 80m. In the 55m+ size bracket, there were 54 yacht sales in 2019, which accounted for 8% of the total yacht sales in the year. This is a similar percentage seen in 2017 (10%) and 2018 (10%), indicating a steady market for this size of vessel. Out of the total number of yachts sold, 54% were used vessels, 24% were new orders and 15% were new-build yachts sold under speculation. Northern European shipyards are dominant in this size category, with 48% of total sales (37% Netherlands and 11% Germany). However, shipyards in Italy and Turkey have been â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;catching upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with their Northern counterparts, with several launches in the larger size segment (26% Italy and 11% Turkey). Notable transactions include the sale of 116m Ulysses by Norwegian yard Kleven Marine, the largest second-hand yacht sale in 2019.

5+ METER CATEGORY 2020 Q1 OVERVIEW The first quarter of 2020 closed with a 30% decrease in the number of yachts sold versus a year ago, driven by a particularly low March, a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic. The industry saw a total of 88 motor yachts sold in the 24m+ segment of the market, including 68 used vessels and 9 new build orders. There were 5 sales in the 55+m, including 4 brokerage deals and 1 new build sale.

In Q1, a total of 212 motor yachts 24m and over were listed for sale, 195 motor yachts and 23 sailing yachts. In the 55+ metre category, 12 new yachts were listed on the market, including 11 used vessels and 1 new build. Price reductions recorded in this size category were moderate, with 21 yachts (15% of the fleet) announcing price improvements. As a result of the global reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic, we expect to see an increase in the number of price reductions in the coming months.
