Just one year on since the world entered lockdown and reports from the first six months of 2021 show that the yacht market is the strongest it’s been in four years. During the first half of the year over 520 new and pre-owned superyachts were sold from the beginning of January to June with a total of 492 new vessels entering the market. The half closed at +68% in number of total superyachts sold versus the same period in 2020 and +42% versus 2019.

Of the yachts sold in H1 2021, 77% were pre-owned vessels and 23% new build orders. The brokerage market recorded an impressive performance with pre-owned superyacht sales at +100% versus H1 2020 and +60% versus H1 2019. Buoyed by a wave of first time buyers enlightened by the benefits of yacht ownership, brokerage has also seen existing owners upsizing their yachts, as well as acquiring multiple boats in various locations around the world. During the first six months of the year, 86 new build yachts were launched at an average size of 44 meters. New build sales, which had been experiencing a decline over the past quarters, also closed on a positive trend, with a +9% increase versus H1 2020 and a +3% increase versus H1 2019.

With fewer yachts entering the market, new listings recorded a -13% decline versus the same period in 2020. To date, yacht prices have kept strong with vessels that were realistically priced selling faster. The average price reduction across all size segments was €557,000 with 787 price adjustments announced. In comparison, the average price change in H1 2019 was of €741,000.
