Following a strong H1, the second half of 2018 continued a positive upward trend in yacht sales. With 602 yachts sold over 24 meters, the year saw a 5% increase in total sales in comparison to the 2017 year average. 184 new yachts accounted for 30% of 2018 sales, with 418 used yachts making up the remaining 70%. New yacht
sales decreased by 14% in comparison to 2017, while used yachts saw a 17% increase. In good news for buyers, 892 yachts above 24 meters were added to the brokerage market in 2018 in a flurry of positive activity. 88% of the new entrants were motor yachts, expanding the market inventory substantially. US buyers continue to dominate the market.

Following the continuing prevalence of motor versus sail, 2018 saw 535 motor yachts account for 89% of total sales. SAILING

Vessels in the 24-30 meter and 50-60 meter brackets were by far the most well sold, with 167 sales in the 24-30 meter size range and 45 sales in the 50-60 meter size range. An increase of 62% and 22% respectively from 2017 demonstrates that these size categories have been selling fast. Though inventory is increasing, good quality displacement yachts in the 24-30 meter and 5060 meter size classes remain scarce, presenting a favourable opportunity for sellers with new entrants in these classes.

Demand for explorer yachts at predominantly Northern European yards continues to rise. Brokers note that the trend is increasingly focused on capability over aesthetic, with many new boats boasting the opulence of a world-class superyacht while featuring extensive autonomous ranges and Ice Class hulls. Feadship delivered its first ever ice-classed hull, Promise, in December 2018. Broad in-house brokerage initiatives such as IYC’s action to eliminate single-use plastics throughout charter fleets and a rise in hybrid technology installed on new build yachts, are reflective of sustained industry-wide interest in environmental issues.

2018 saw first-time yacht owners buying bigger than ever before. IYC saw an unprecedented number of first-time buyers in the 40-60 meter size range. Other trends in ownership see growing attention to a deviation from traditional forms of brokership, with an increase in yacht auctions, cryptocurrency payment forms and fractional ownership models. Digital innovation has pushed the yachting business to new heights and big brokerage houses are investing in quality content and streamlined product platforms. Yacht buyers are capitalising upon the availability of high-quality information and marketing materials.

NEW YACHTS DELIVERED BY SIZE RANGE 2017 - 2018 New build deliveries were down 9% in comparison to 2017, with a total of 221 new yachts above 24 meters delivered in 2018. New deliveries of yachts in the 24-30 meter size range saw the most significant decrease, with 74 yachts delivered in 2018 in comparison to 97 yachts delivered in 2017. Regardless, the 24-30 meter size range still accounted for 33.5% of all new deliveries in 2018, reflective of the continued popularity of smaller and entry point yachts.

The 60+ meter size range saw a significant increase of 44%, from 16 new deliveries in 2017 to 23 new deliveries in 2018. Despite the rise, 50-60 meter yachts made up 5% of new build deliveries, indicating a continuation of scarcity in late-model boats in this increasingly popular size range on the brokerage market.

48 YACHTS SOLD IN 2018 BY IYC IYC sold a total of 48 yachts in 2018. In line with the overall industry figures, the 24-30 meter segment dominated with 16 yachts sold. The 30-40 meter segment followed with 10 yachts sold, and six yachts sold in the 50-60 meter segment. Brokers note a striking rise in first-time owners in the 50-60 meter segment, suggesting a possible shift in the traditional trend of ascending superyacht size classes. The biggest (by LOA) sale in 2018 by IYC was the 55-meter S Force, currently under construction at the Italian shipyard Admiral with delivery in 2020. The largest motor yacht new order in the industry was the 118-meter Project 1010 at the Dutch shipyard, Feadship. IYC’s largest brokerage sale of 2018 was the 70-meter Lürssen superyacht, Saint Nicolas. The largest brokerage sale of the year was the 110-meter Oceanco-built superyacht, Jubilee.
