TOP SUPERYACHT TRENDS FOR 2020 The superyacht industry is constantly evolving and IYC is always keeping a finger on the pulse of all the latest market trends. We take a look at some of the top trends for 2020, which is set to be another ground-breaking year.
Seeing the world in a different way Yachts are being used in different and inventive ways, and the milk run is no longer categorically the norm. Whether whale watching in Tonga or heli-skiing in Antarctica superyacht owners are looking to see the world in a different way and enjoy experiences money can’t buy. The rise of explorer and expedition style yachts reflects this, with many new launches in 2019 having an explorer focus. These included 278’/85m M/Y Bold by Silveryachts and 209’/64m M/Y Scout by Hakvoowrt. That said, visiting new cruising grounds does not always require an exploration-ready vessel, and owners are also opting for long range yachts as another way of reaching new locations.
Eco-friendly movement There is a growing wave of support for eco-friendly initiatives that influence both the way yachts are used and the yachts themselves. New eco-focused yacht designs often make use of hybrid propulsion systems and battery technologies – these include the 2019 launch of the hybrid yacht 164’/50m M/Y Bintador by Tankoa Yachts. Equally, owners and crew are finding new ways to lower the impact of yachts – one example is 122’/37.4m M/Y AWOL, which was one of the first vessels to join the Clear Ocean Pact. Builders are also changing track, with Australian yard Echo Yachts announcing in December 2019 that it is embracing a new strategy that will now 100% focus on “advanced engineered, ecologically focused superyachts for like-minded clients.” New initiatives such as the Blue Water Foundation are helping to drive change from within the industry.
Charter on the rise
Charter is on the rise, with the market showing continued growth. Charter is proving an increasingly popular way to experience the superyacht lifestyle and a huge range of yachts and destinations. We are seeing many buyers looking to invest in yachts with strong charter potential, or a proven record, and it is likely that a growing number of yachts will be designed or refitted with charter directly in mind. 163’/49.94m M/Y Bon Vivant by Codecasa is one example of a yacht that is undergoing an extensive 10

A rise in a new generation of owners means that yachts and the way they are being used are changing. The order book reflects this, with a wide range of superyachts that are less and less likely to conform to more traditional yacht design. Younger owners are often more active, which has spawned vessels that are designed for outdoor use, and often with plenty of storage for a huge range of water toys. The superyacht industry has always been known for pushing the boundaries of design, and the younger generation of owners are helping to drive this. As a result, yachts are more social, more usable, more ecofriendly and more technology-driven. Just one example

This includes charter management, yacht management and insurance services, and helps deliver continuity of care and a much more personal service. This investment can range from staff training all the way up to technology and systems that make the yachting experience more intelligent and user friendly – IYC’s development of the yacht management application ‘BLUE’ is just one example of this.
Investment in technology Yachts are becoming even more technologically advanced with shipyards investing heavily in R&D and the creation of some truly impressive operational systems. The rise in the ‘internet of things’ has also had an effect on the way yachts are designed and used, delivering greater control of the yacht environment through smart technology. There have been huge advances in connectivity and, almost ironically, it is this seamless constant connectivity that can actually be freeing, allowing superyacht users to spend more time on board. A guarantee of being reachable gives peace of mind that time away from home and the office is achievable. From a more light-hearted perspective, the assurance of quality movie streaming, music and the internet, is a hugely important requirement for guests – particularly the younger generation.
