Architect

About me I am a 26 year old Moroccan architect. I graduated from Ecole Nationale d’architecture de Rabat (ENA) and I accomplished a Master degree in civil engineering from La faculté des sciences et techniques de Settat (FSTS). After finishing my graduation projects from both universitie’s curriculums, I chose to take a step back from “life” and seek a different endeavour in Turkey where I worked as a volunteer with AIESEC International. This experience allowed me to have an introspective perception and discover many aspects of my personality. I made a new network of friends along the way while discovering a new and diverse culture in the wonderful country of Turkey. Returning to Morocco, I took an internship in an architectural firm in Settat where I participated mainly in construction sites visits and meetings. Currently, I am looking for an opportunity where I can blossom as newly graduated architect and gain experience by being thoroughly involved in the different phases of a project starting with the sketches and meetings with clients all the way to delivering the building. I would like to enhance my skills in terms of architectural design, graphic visualization in addition to deepen my knowledge of construction techniques. I am at the beginning of my journey and I am looking forward to a professional environment full of creativity.

Urban Context

Architectural Parti

The project is located in Settat which is a medium-sized and quiet town, however, it is lacking recreational areas. The community development center that I suggested sows seeds of joy and happiness in a community almost governed by the monotony and the boredom of its environment.

These e theoretical research which preceded the design of the project.

Program and design process The program of the entity is composed of four main functions: - Recreation: providing activities that guide children, teenagers and adults to discover their different passions. -Meeting and socialization: includes a set of spaces which favors communication and gathering between individuals. - Spiritual healing: providing a space of prayer and a religious reminder in a sensory manner both visual, through architecture and audible throug Adhan and recitation of the Quran. - Functional Integration Center: integrates pre-existing functions (commerce) to absorb the needs for job opportunities and ensure the functional integration of the project in its surrounding environment.

1- Elimination of the automobile track dividing the site in two.

2- Emphasis of the existing by giving value to the landscape of the dried river (Oued Boumoussa).

3- Identifying the points of convergence of the various possible pedestrian paths.

4- Implementation of the program according to the principal and functional requirements.

It has been completely dry for han a decade and generates stifling smells due to marginalisation. s project, I planned to turn it into a green open theater, with grassy picnic areas at the edges, the bottom of the bed I designed some colorful play tracks with dry fountains reminiscent of quatic element. During the day, the green theater will have a calm and quiet spirit. At night, chronizing the music, the light effects and the jets of water, the lived atmosphere would be ntirely different dimension. 15

The sensory garden is a place of rest, me derly. Entertaining and soothing the sens getaway from the everyday life, it is a pin

Open air work space

Right in the center of the sensory garden, I set up an outdoor work space with a furniture specially designed allowing anyone to bring their books, personal laptop or tablet, work while enjoying the beautiful weather with complete peace of mind. The space is bordered by a closed water course that marks its limits in relation to the sensory garden, hence producing a calm atmosphere thanks to the sound of water. 21

A market, a mosque and a recreational and cultural center

The three built elements of the program are a market, a mosque and a recreational and cultural center. The architecture of the three buildings blends in with the curved shapes of the roofs and outer envelopes. This orientation comes from the desire to integrate the buildings into nature and create a sense of continuity that is not found in rigid forms. In addition, several studies have shown that sharp shapes accentuate our anxiety, therefore, as the well-being is the stake of this project, the final result has given a space where nature and architecture merge to form a coherent whole.

23

The recreationnal and cultural center

The aim ofthe recreational and cultural center is to provide the city with a place in which citizens can have acces to artistic activities, cultural events, reading spaces or exhibition galleries. It is a place where one can discover herself, meet people who share the same interests and explore new technological and artistic trends. The program developed takes into consideration new passions that are particularly popular among today’s youth, such as the creation of video and / or multimedia content.

The chosen architectural form is inspired by the Fibonacci suite or the golden number known for its proportionality and great aesthetics. In plan as in elevation, the spaces are articulated around a central core which was the departure of the design. The building is refined from floor to floor and its height does not exceed 15 meters. When treating the elevations, I opted for the raw textures of smooth concrete, glass and wood strips whose composition underlines the elegant movement of the building.

Urban context • This habitat is part of a revitalized urban planning based on the values of equity, dignity, tranquility and solidarity while taking into account the issues of sustainable development. It is intended for a “simulated” Muslim community that values its principles and implements them.

35

The patio The particularity of this habitat is its endowment in patios. The interior architectural organization of each apartment revolves around this prioritized central element.

The combination of patios

The system of patios applied in this project is a system of alternation in which each patio has a double height which allows the appartment to have a direct connection to the sky. Its minimum dimensions are l x w x h = 3m x 3m x 6m. The choice of surface is mainly linked to the central role of the patio as a living space and not as a service space while the double height is due to an optimal sunshine penetration. It should be noted that the top apartments have no openings on the patios from below to preserve the privacy and security of the inhabitants.

The study of sun exposure

In this project, the patio plays a key role in lighting and solar exposure. It allows apartments to benefit from two additional facades in addition to the main ones. Thus, its location is imperatively on one of the southwest or south-east facades. On the diagram above, it turns out that these two orientations benefit from the longest periods of solar exposure. Nevertheless, the useful surfaces of sunshine differ between seasons (diagram below). They are large enough in winter and small enough in summer.

37

Interior Ambien

nce: Thanks to its centrality and opening onto the sky, the patio offers sensations of both grandeur and conviviality.

d with the development of soft skills and talents in complementarity with the subjects of project’s program which includes: a theater atelier, a music studio, a library, multimedia ientific labs, lecture halls and standard classrooms. 47

Site plan

The high school building is placed in the center of the site, its main entrance is marked by a square that leads to the lobby. It is surrounded by a large garden designed to create the ambience of the four seasons: summer, autumn, winter and spring. This choice reinforces the spirit of diversity within the establishment and is possible through a playful arrangement of colors, plant species and furniture. While walking in the garden of the school one has the impression of traveling in time. 49

The shape of the building is a metaphor of six hands holding each other forming a hexagon. This image symbolizes the strength of union, stability and durability in time and space.

Some changes in the volume have taken place to make it more interesting and more functional.

Volumetry and facade composition

In order to make the transition between the interior and exterior more fluid, I created at the center of the hexagon a courtyard. The volume obtained is static and heavy. It emphasizes horizontality.

On the facades, the shape of the hexagon was used to form ornamental patterns that symbolize several values of the academic world such as complementarity, integration and solidarity. The different shades of gray symbolize a desired harmonious diversity between students. P.S: The shape of the hexagon was also used in the landscape design in addition to the composition of facades and the volumetry.

Presentation of the neighborhood • Madinat Al Irfane is a district in the city of Rabat that takes its importance from its location, its urban quality and the facilities and services it provides to the city. • It is known for its double calling: academic and medical services. The academic institutions and the hostpital complexes in Al Irfan serve all the kingdom and give the district a notoriety shining on the national level.

Goals of the restructuring Our intervention is based on the idea of opening the district from the interior towards the city. The goal is to open the facilities (demolition of the fences), unify and share the public spaces of the neighborhood, while ensuring a balanced animation in all areas. In addition to increasing the physical links with neighboring areas in order to facilitate access to the neighborhood. At the same time, we tried to solve the deficiencies raised during the analysis related to traffic, housing offer and seasonal frequentation of the district. 59

Campus

Lack of connectivity between Institutions materialized by enclosing walls which emphasize Isolation.

In a large campus as Al Irfan, we are wondering why there is a lack in parastudying facilities such as sport clubs, restaurants and social hubs.

Map summarizing the various problems related to the academic vocation of Al Irfan.

1- Academic vocation • The academic institutions occupy 35% of the neighborhood area (106 ha out of 300 ha). • A problem of unexploited surfaces is very remarkable: only 14.5% of the total surface of the equipments is built. 85.5% of the surface is vacant of which 18.5% is untapped (16ha). • The infrastructure of the schools is unfair, only 30% of the colleges in AL Irfane offer students accomodation and first necessity and recreational facilities. Students from the remaining 70% of schools depend on the neighborhood facilities, and sometimes they depend on the facilities of other institutions if it is allowed. • The academic vocation of the district generates a problem of seasonality. The district is frequented only during the academic seasons. 2- Housing offers •Al Irfane is mainly attended by students, professors and state officials. However, the resident population is made up of 90% of students. • The area dedicated to housing represents 9% of the total area of the neighborhood.

• Housing supply comes in two forms: 1- Student accomodation. 2- Residential buildings. • Due to the shortage of places offered by boarding schools and in-situ student accomodations, an excess of 15% of students looking for accommodation is estimated each year. • The actual residential buildings in the district offer 480 apartments in total with surfaces varying between 70 and 130 m². It participates in the housing of less than 1% of students. This percentage is very low because of the high cost of rent. 3- Recreational equipments and first necessities facilities • There are oly few first necessities facilities in Al Irfane and they do not meet all the needs of residents. •Plazzas and green spaces are almost absent from the urban landscape. •Leisure facilities are either difficult to access or that they are dedicated to an exculsive clientele that does not include students.

4- Mobility • Hierarchy of the roads: One notes a dependence of the secondary roads on the main roads. This decreasing hierarchy of tracks from Allal El Fassi is confirmed by their decreasing width. • The flows of passengers and availability of local services are concentrated on the central axis Allal El Fassi. This causes several problems including points of conflict at the entrances to the neighborhood, insecurity felt in the secondary roads because of their desertic aspect and the feeling of isolation of the inhabitants of the buildings located at the bottom Irfane. It should be noted that secondary roads serve approximately 62% of Al Irfane students. So 62% of students can become victims of aggression.

The Al Irfane road fabric is a multi-output “mesh system”, including a “linear system” and a “loop system”. • A: The loop system: The loops located inside the mesh are presented as linear plots that return to their point of departure (we start from the Allal El Fassi axis and we return to it). • B : The linear system: Going towards a smaller scale, one finds linear systems: arborescent or simple (1) and cul de sac or multi-issue (2).

Landscape placemaking

• In order to make the district Al Irfane a friendly place to live, the creation of plazzas has been proved crucial, plazzas gathering different activities (catering, reading spot, relaxation) whose attendance will reflect a lively and attractive image of the neighborhood. • Favoring soft traffic within the neighborhood is also one of the priorities of the redevelopment.

Urban context •This project is part of the new vision developed for the redevelopment and restructuring of Al Irfane district in Rabat. • The idea behind the programming of a multifunctional center in the center of the district is to solve the shortcomings in areas of extra-curricular activities (leisure, sport, culture and meeting spaces), then to create a landmark to the neighborhood that will mark its centrality that has been always shy. It is true that Al Irfane encloses several buildings whose architecture is interesting but none of them represents an icon or emblem of the district in the imagination of the population of Rabat.

Architectural Parti • To create a dynamic nucleus within the Al Irfane neighborhood that radiates throughout the city.

79

Choosing the building site

• The site is located at the base of the old social/commercial center of Al Irfane. This choice has been made intentionaly to keep the memory of the place.

• The perspective is oriented according to the central axis Allal El Fassi.

• The site is easily located and accessible via the intersection of the two structural roads coming from the main entrances of the district. • The site is located in the middle of the pedestrian section on which it is planned a continuous animation.

• Among the ambitions of the project, its integration on the network of other nuclei of cultural, sports and commercial influence of Rabat. 81

Drafts/ Evolution of the design

Initially, we imagined the center as a single grandiose and multifunctional architectural entity. We tried to impress through a volumetric contrast with the existing environment. Nevertheless, by rethinking the project’s development options and developing the entity’s detailed program, this proposal proved to be gigantic compared to existing and projected combined needs. Thus, we have reviewed our entire design.

• In our new layout of the site, we were guided by the idea of the promenade. A walk that follows paths of different ambiences allowing the user to experience the space under various emotions. To concretize this parti, we opted to thematize the pathways according to the elements marking natural landscapes: water, vegetation and light. Through their design and openness, these pathways draw great visual breakthroughs that guide the pedestrian. • Among the new project guidelines was the creation of housing projects of different types ensuring a vibrant social life in the district throughout the year.

General guidelines plan (final version)

• This plan shows the final layout of the pole. We opted for mixed-use functions. The vital and dynamic functions are positioned in the center and bordered by a circle line. They overlap and overflow on the connecting pathways to ensure a continuous promenade. • The habitat is organized under two distinct entities depending on the target population: one will be dedicated to young people (students and couples) located near the Souissi university campus, and a second located on the other side and with a quieter family friendly atmosphere.

Several spatial configurations were explored before getting to the final proposition.

• In the center of the site,on the axis of Allal El Fassi, we planned a recreational and cultural center that will form the core of the pole and the architectural landmark.

The central core

Abstraction diagram of the mass of the ground

• In order to emphasize the centrality while spotting light on the cultural dimension of Al Irfane, we opted for the function of the central nucleus to be a match between Culture & Leisure given the strong communication between the two. • The architectural parti of the project is to create a building that emerges from the thematic pathways that structure the site. The different courses pierce the ground floor, mark its transparency and converge towards a central point constituting the plazza around which the building is articulated. • The central square will also be marked by the passage of the streetcar and its stop at the center of the building. The entrance of the streetcar will be accompanied by the aquatic course (water court and fountains). The angles of the course layouts are obtuse to ensure a feeling of welcome and invitation.

Volumetry

A twisted volumetry intented to create awe.

The volume has been designed to be compact on one side and open on the other. Entering the building from the north, we feel like we are entering a closed space but as soon as we cross the breakthroughs of the thematic pathways, we are surprised by its total opening onto the sky. This opening allows a better ventilation and the enjoyment of the beautiful weather of Morocco.

Circulation within the building is established through a circle line that marks a distinct but transparent volume. The shape of the stairs that bind the circle lines is a way giving an identity to the central plazza and especially a monumentality. Together (stairs and circle lines), they constitute the aerial journey.
