Center for Effective School Practices
Welcome to the 2008-2009 catalog of professional development offerings from the Center for Effective School Practices at the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education. The Center for Effective School Practices provides a critical connection linking education research and education practice to improve teaching and learning in New Jersey. Our new schedule of workshops and other professional development experiences is based on the expressed needs of schools, districts, and individuals.
Richard De Lisi
Dean Graduate School of Education
We provide professional development experiences that present the common core of teaching knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential for New Jersey educators to lead their students to meet high standards. We present high-quality workshops covering a wide range of instructional strategies, in the various content areas, and for educators teaching at all grade levels. Our schedule includes Understanding by Design, one of several new workshops aligned with initiatives of the NJ Department of Education and State Board of Education. On April 3, 2009, we will present the 41st Rutgers Conference on Reading and Writing, under the direction of Dr. Lesley Mandel Morrow. The program will feature keynote speakers, New York City administrator Shelley Harwayne and children’s book author Mo Willems, and more than 20 workshops. Additional workshops will be announced during the school year. Planned but not yet scheduled will be workshops on Response to Intervention, among other topics. You will notice that our 2008-2009 schedule of workshops begins later this year to accommodate the 60-day waiting period required for board approval. Consult our redesigned and updated website at http://cesp.rutgers.edu to find out about the full array of 2008-2009 offerings.
Please join us in a continuing journey that allows you to learn from our expert Claudia Burzichelli practitioner-presenters as you reflect on your educational practice. Founder and Executive Director Center for Effective School Practices
Best wishes for a wonderful school year.

Engaging Education Stakeholders in the Mid-Atlantic REL Mid-Atlantic, along with the nine other labs in the National Lab Network, is responsible for conducting high-quality research, locating and disseminating critical evidence-based information of immediate interest to our stakeholders, and simultaneously fostering the development of a culture that understands, respects, and values this approach to education. We employ a multidisciplinary team of state coordinators and laboratory extension specialists (LESs) composed of former regional and local school administrators, educators, student support practitioners, and researchers. LESs are the human link between REL Mid-Atlantic and education stakeholders throughout the region, expanding and improving communication among researchers, educators, policymakers, parents, legislators, business leaders, and community organizations.

Project Based Learning (2 sessions) Are you searching for ways to encourage students in your class or school to become more engaged in the learning process and more motivated to succeed by challenging themselves to work beyond their immediate threshold? Perhaps it’s time to investigate PBL. Project Based Learning (PBL) combines curriculum, authentic work on real-life skills and exhibitions of mastery. By engaging students immediately in work that develops imagination, resourcefulness, organization, socialization and perseverance, PBL turns around the old learn-first-produce-later paradigm. Students are moved along by the urgency of completing work on a product that they have largely chosen/designed themselves. The research clearly demonstrates marked improvement in retention of what is learned and even suggests the ability to learn more as reflected on standardized tests.
