Otj Architects

I worked with clients from Fortune500 companies to create branding graphics and design strategies to further the companies’ visual identities. My graphic design proposal for the corporate lobby headquarters of the world’s leading music certification company were chosen and exhibited on a screen installation.

Research Assistant / Feb - May 2019 Design And Augmented Intelligence Lab

I conducted UX research in human-centered design by analyzing the neurological responses of participants as they interacted with different virtual reality environments. The project I worked on examines the effects of urban design on way-finding and visual memory to inform easy way finding on virtual platforms.

Consulting Intern / Summer 2018 Green Business Bureau

I worked on improving the user experience for customers seeking online sustainability assessments and helped further the creation of an online ecofriendly business network.

UX Design Focus

Two projects on feed redesign that were informed by user experience research, user flows, and use cases. The changes made increase the business value of the respective companies by allowing for ease of navigation and the ability to rapidly crowd-source music to create collaborative playlists.

User Scenario:

User Experience,

Anna opens UberEats and scrolls through the eclectic jumble of categories on the search page. She clicks on the “healthy” category and then uses the sorting option at the top to sort by the delivery time instead of what was picked for her.

Anna Michelle

“I’m hoping to discover new vegan friendly restaurants, recommended by local people who share the value healthy eating.”

Anna has a day job as a yoga teacher and performs live music as a side job. Outside of her busy weekly schedule, she enjoys hiking and volunteering at local farms. She lives alone so she is hoping to meet people who share her love of the outdoors and healthy living.

User Flow, User Experience Issues with the App The eclectic jumble of categories makes it hard for the user to find the search constraint they are looking for. After the sorting constraints have been put into place, restaurants that are not “healthy” or “vegan” pop up, as the algorithm finds options within traditionally unhealthy restaurants, that classify as “healthy”.

Feed Redesign Outcomes * Intuitive organization of categories by the time of day, meal course, dietary categorization, ingredients and dishes, health foods, and nationality. * Ability to join groups and view ratings and reviews of popular restaurants within each group. * The group icon among the sorting tools at the top allows the user to see the groups that they have joined. * Within the app, recommendations for each user are tailored closer to what they like, but users are still encouraged to try new restaurants based on the reviews of their peers.

New Feature Design, “Atmosphere” Feature Spotify’s strength lies in its ability to provide new music by allowing listeners to view what their friends are listening to. However, upon analyzing the Spotify homepage feed on an Iphone, I found that the homepage of the app does not facilitate social interaction, nor does it successfully recommend new music, as the first components of the feed are tailored strongly towards what the user is already listening to. My goal is to reintegrate social interaction into Spotify’s feed by reorganizing the personalized feed to include a new feature that allows for the rapid creation of crowd-sourced playlists.

On the “Atmosphere” landing page, the user is able to see what their friends are listening to and has the option to add their friends to a group playlist.

Users are also able to see other nearby users, and have the option to quickly drag and drop their icons into a collaborative playlist or add them to a group playlist by clicking the “Add to Group” Icon.

User Experience,

User Experience Issues with the Mobile App * The homepage feed is heavily focused on already discovered music and makes repetitive recommendations * The feed order changes each day and is not consistent between users * It is difficult to find friends on Spotify & see what they are listening to; no nearby or mutual friends suggestions

At this point in the journey she has exhausted much of the music on her personal playlists, and instead of clicking on one of the suggested playlists, he goes to the search tool and searches for one of her mates’ names on Spotify. She begins to play his “Road-trip” playlist. All of her friends have very different tastes in music, so no one agrees on listening to this one playlist.

User Flow, Landing Screens On the home page, I reorganized the feed to include what I have labeled as the users “Atmosphere” after the users “Recently Played”. The users “Atmosphere” shows them the recent collaborative playlists they have listened to. Within a collaborative playlist I added an “Add Friends” and “Add Nearby” button that brings the user to the atmosphere page that lists their friends activity and the nearby listeners.

02 Human-Centered Design & Architecture

“

Using a combination of hand rendering tools and 3D modeling programs such as Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, I have designed innovative, green buildings that showcase my design aesthetic.

Aranya Cafe The Modern Biolodge Microdwelling Shinohara Apt. Hand Rendering: Hand-drawing for DEA 1150 Design Graphics & Visualization.

Aranya Cafe The Aranya CafÊ was built by Tsutomu Deguchi on the waters edge of the Aranya Park on the Gold Coast of China. The cafe is notorious for its expressos and donuts, its 360 degree glass facade, and its incorporation of artificial turf patches that facilitate social interaction. The cafe’s organic architecture and light airy feel creates a space for people of all ages to sit, relax, and recharge in a natural setting.

The Modern Biolodge

Provides living accommodations for one couple and allows for hosting of family and friends through the conversion of flexible office and living spaces. Connects residents with the natural world through the use of sustainable materials and the influx of early morning light through directly east facing windows. Modularity reduces price and environmental impact on local landscape as a result of primarily off-site construction of housing modules. Sculpture Drawing: Hand-drawing showcasing a study of modularity and the orientation of modules in 3D space.

SketchUp was used to create the 3D rendering of the Modern Biolodge on the previous page. The initial space plans were designed using AutoCAD. Mood, lightning and tactile sensation where considered when choosing the featured materials. The realistic, naturally lit interior images of the rooms were rendered in V-Ray and an animated virtual walk through of the space was also created using SketchUp.

Micro-Apt. Shown is a microapartment for artist couple Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, which involves unconventional methods of allowing the couple to be physically apart, yet still connected within their household. An urban intervention composed of a sloping curtain wall houses the couple’s private bathing area inside one alcove, and provides a public washing basin along its street front facade.

Process Work: Volumetric studies examining how volumes can be used to create spatial perceptions & voids. The architecture of the apartment was driven by the goal of conserving water and allowing for a singular water source to provide water to both the entire apartment and the urban intervention. The long curtain wall penetrates the roof to create a small water basin to collect rainwater, and by the forces of gravity rainwater water flows down the wall from the roof, into the kitchen, and out to the urban intervention.

03 A Case Study on the Church of Light

“

By making a scaled 3D model of the Church of Light, by Tadao Ando, I was able to understand the entry of natural light into a space in response to geolocation and time of day, and how these differing light effects create spatial perceptions

“

Church of Light Shown is an architectural model of the Church of Light, by Tadao Ando, in which the influx of light is used to create and define new spatial perceptions, blurring the line between the natural world and the built environment. The church is orientated southeast, and as a result, in the morning and early afternoons during services, the inside of the church is bathed in an ephemeral light that inspires prayer and self-reflection.

04 Film & Digital Photography, Film Development

“

Photography is my art media of choice because it captures fleeting moments and represents them in a tactile form that is malleable and open to interpretation. My love for this medium has developed into an appreciation for its origin and darkroom processing has become a form of meditation for me.

“

Digital Photography.

Photos taken on an Iphone 7 at the Monkey Garden in Bali, Indonesia on the previous page, and a local monastery and coffee farm on the left. The images on the right were taken at the festival of light in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, celebrating the Vietnamese New Year.

Film Photography,

Camera-less photography skills were used in the darkroom to create prints of real life objects, such as flowers and lemon slices. I also developed and printed black and white ISO 400 film, using a mix of burning in methods that allowed for greater contrast while maintaining an extensive gray scale on my prints.
