01. What sparked your initial interest in photography? It started when my dad put me in a half day photography camp when I was nine or ten. I remember Kodak gave us film cameras to use for the day to take pictures and my first portrait was my dad. It stuck since then.

02. What is your favorite type of photography? I love photographing people. My passion in photography started with fashion and commercial and then it led to lifestyle, family, engagements, etc. It’s always been about people. I love how someone’s expressions, pose, and movement can tell a story.

03. We find your Instagram to be so inspiring. What do you think it is about your photos that keep your followers interested and excited? Thank you! That’s always been my goal to inspire people to pursue their dreams whether it may be in photography, singing, fashion, whatever. Do what you love and love what you do. For me it’s about being able to show your true self, what you’re truly interested in, what you’re into and by being genuine to how you communicate with your friends.

04. Where would you like your photography to take you, travel wise? It is my dream to be paid to travel to take photos! Gaahh, who wouldn’t want that?? I’d love to get lost in Europe... France, Italy, Spain, UK.

05. Where are you from? I am originally from Manila, Philippines! I moved to the States 5 years ago and I’m loving it! I currently live in South San Francisco, CA, which is 10 mins away from San Francisco.

06. What is your favorite thing about your hometown? Being able to live in the suburbs and be so close to the city. I love how we’re so close to everything: the city, the beach, the mountains. I love the diversity, the rich culture, the colorful lifestyle, the weather!, the stores, the coffee shops and so much more!

07. Are there any hidden spots or neat locations in your hometown, such as cute little shops or cafes? I wouldn’t know any of these hidden spots without checking Instagram, Yelp, and this blog I follow: spottedsf.com. Seriously, a huge help. I love Outerlands, General Store, Andytown Coffee Roasters, Trouble Coffee, and the Mission District.

08. What is the first place you would recommend visiting to a friend traveling to your town? I’d say hit Battery Spencer first to see the Golden Gate Bridge, then drive along Hwy 1 (Fort Point, Park Presidio, Marshall and Baker Beach, Legion of Honor) till you end at Lands Ends. I love that place; sunset there is ridiculous.

01. Where are you located? I’m located in Seattle, Washington but I started dating another Instagram user from Portland, Oregon so I’m in a constant travel between the two amazing cities.

02. What inspires your photography? My photography was inspired by a few local photographers actually. I was tired of sitting in a classroom doing IB work and I hated the job I was working. I mean I was only 17 at the time, but I really, really, felt the need to get out there and seize life. Then I started meeting people with compelling stories, random people; baristas, waitresses, state parks workers, local residents, people from other countries... and it all started with getting on an onramp and driving as far as I was willing to go. As far as things that inspire my photography, that’s a difficult question. I’m inspired to click the shutter based off the people I’m with and the moments we create, but the look I go for is inspired by various photographers I have met and keep up with.

03. What camera gear do you typically take with you on the road? I shoot with the Canon 60D and I just put in an order for a Canon 5D Mark III, but I travel with that and a 17-40L f/4.

04. What is your typical editing process like? Oh man! Basically, I use Lightroom 5 and sometimes Photoshop CS6, when necessary, to edit. First I correct white balances and do mild toning. Then I have VSCO film packs 00-07 and I usually throw on one of the film filters I like, or a preset I’ve customized. I also tone the filter to fit the lighting and natural colors of the photo. I do that by toning specific colors in split toning. If needed, I use a gradient filter to change the perception of the image’s ambient light to give a more naturally lit look to the final photo. If it’s a portrait, I have some user brush sets I’ve developed to get better clarity, colors, and sharpness, in order to get the look I want to portray. Every photo is different. Some photos take 10 minutes to edit and others take about 3 hours; it really depends.

05. Tell us about Stag Visuals. Stag Visuals is just a site that I keep updated as a portfolio for companies to review before contracting me for work! I want to incorporate a log for trips, but

I’m trying to find the best way to present trips I go on. I know I’m probably going to do something for when I climb Mt. Rainier ( July 28th!) so stay tuned for that.

06. How did you come up with the idea? I thought one day that I needed a place to post work other than Instagram. Now I have a website for portfolio work, and I use Instagram as a business card.

07. Where have you gotten to travel as a result of photography? I’ve gotten to travel to a lot of local places in Washington, but most notably I was able to travel to Switzerland through an Instagram friend (Thank you @MaryCanoRyding!). That was an amazing trip. I basically hopped on a train and slept on that train for like 9 days while I went around all of Switzerland.

08. Where do you hope to travel for your photography? Switzerland was a trip that came up before the main trip I’ve been meaning to make, which is Iceland. Everything that I’ve been doing lately has just been building up to this trip. When I climb Rainier I’ll be learning Glacial climbing methods and hopefully will be ready enough to walk along the Vatnajökull Glacier in Iceland. I have an entire trip planned to go around the entire Icelandic Coast in the span of a month.

09. How has Instagram influenced your photography career? Instagram became the classroom where I began to thrive and grow as a photographer. Now, as a freelance photographer, Instagram has become the networking grounds where I get my base clientele.

10. Are there any neat little shops or cafes that you feel make your city unique? Oh definitely! I love @BurienPress for my daily cup of coffee, @GrandCentralBakery for lunch, and if you’re looking to buy apparel I love @DoTheExtraordinary!

11. Where would be the first place you would recommend a traveling friend visit? I recommend driving the entire North Cascades Highway 20. It’s gorgeous. There’s Lake Diablo, and then at night there are amazing star shots of Liberty Bell near the lookout. 27

29

PILCHUCK FIRE LOOKOUT I love the Pilchuck Fire Lookout because every time I’ve been there it’s always been a memorable experience. The Mount Pilchuck lookout was once used to spot fires in the North Cascades in 1918, but was rebuilt in 1990 by a mountaineering group. The trail is usually snow covered until midsummer. It’s a strenuous hike to a very crowded site in the summer. But, you climb through a beautiful oldgrowth forest surrounding heathercovered hummocks to the rocky summit and discover an incredible panoramic view of the Puget Sound lowlands, the Cascade and Olympic Mountains.

01. How did you initially get into photography? I initially got into photography around junior high, about 7th grade. I loved taking photos outside, even if they weren’t great. I’d buy disposable cameras and go on walks whenever I could.

02. Where are you from? I’ve lived in Rochester, New York my entire life.

03. What’s the best thing about your state? I love how versatile New York is; you have the city of course which has so much to offer, but then you have upstate where I’m from. It’s is a whole other subculture filled with so much beauty and diversity in itself.

04. Is there an interesting place that you’ve gotten to visit and photograph thanks to your location? Living in upstate NY has given me the privilege to photograph so many beautiful state parks around the surrounding area through all four seasons of the year. Letchworth State Park is one of the most beautiful places close to home to visit!

05. Where is your favorite place to photograph? My favorite place to photograph is easily the George Eastman House in the city of Rochester. It’s this historic mansion that has the most beautiful garden in the midst of spring and summer – it never disappoints.

06. Tell us more about this place. This mansion is a historic museum previously owned by the founder of Kodak. The inside is lovely but the outside gardens are so well kept and look

straight from a different time period. It’s so peaceful in the morning and easily my favorite time of day to wander amongst the flowers.

07. If someone were to travel to your state, what is a place that they would have to visit? If someone were to travel to my state, I would tell them to visit the Adirondacks! They are so beautiful and you can hike great mountains, camp, swim, kayak... just about anything, and you’ll be surrounded by so much loveliness.

08. Are there any hidden spots that you would recommend someone visit, such as cute little shops, restaurants, etc.? Yes! If you ever visit Rochester there are so many places to visit. Make it a priority to hike to the waterfall in the middle of our city, Lower Falls, where you can be right at the base of the waterfall! Durand Eastman is so wonderful to visit. Our city is incredibly fortunate to have a lake so easily accessible. Highland Park is spectacular in the midst of the spring, and there are so many blossoms everywhere you turn. Also, if you’re looking for great coffee... Pour Coffee Parlor, Joe Bean Coffee and Fuego are the go to best coffee brewers. Good Luck, The Red Fern, The Frog Pond, and The Owl House are some of my favorite restaurants – great atmosphere and better food.

09. Where would you like your photography to take you, as far as travel goes? As far as traveling for my photography – I love traveling, and being able to document my travels in any way is a huge blessing to me. I would love to visit Iceland, Alberta, British Columbia, Montana, Ireland, Greece and Spain. But in reality, I’m not picky, and I would love to travel anywhere the opportunity is provided for me!

“I’ve always had a passion to create.”

40

01. Your drawings are breathtaking! What sparked your initial interest in creating? Thank you so much! It’s always encouraging when someone tells me they enjoy my art. I’ve always had a passion to create and because my mom is an artist as well, she always showed me new ways to fuel that passion. Whether it was a small project like a craft in Sunday school or the time consuming projects that I now have at art school, I have always enjoyed coming up with ideas that make my art a little different.

02. What is your favorite mode of creating? My favorite mode of creating is when I’m playing vinyls on my record player. My grandpa was always the most uplifting spirit towards me and made me promise him I’d never stop making art. We had such a bond because we enjoy talking about each other’s passions. His passion was collecting antiques and we loved to talk about his music and how much of an influence artists like the Beatles had on him. So when he passed, I received all his records and they make me so happy. They remind me of my grandpa and they put me in the mood for what I want to create.

03. What are your favorite type of images to create? I love the image of beauty, and human anatomy has always sparked interest in me, so my favorite images to create are portraits in nature (or any pretty little things really).

04. What kinds of things inspire your art? Since I am a visual learner, not only does music inspire ideas for creating, but also I enjoy looking at other talented artists’ work and studying their techniques and ideas shown in their pieces. I’ve even re-created a piece from one of my favorite artists, Charmaine Olivia, to go through the process she did and to see how she painted such a lovely image.

05. Where would you like your art to take you in the future? My ideal dream would be that my art would not only be an inspiration to many other creators, but that people in general would desire to purchase my art because it makes them happy and it brings beauty into their lives. Creating is my passion, and of course I am going to get a career as well, but eventually I’d like to be able to support myself on my paintings alone. It would be a dream to have no silly

job keeping me at home so I would be able to travel the world and paint all the beautiful things that are in it. When I have kids, I want them to know that I never gave up on my dreams because people told me they were not rational.

06. What state are you from? I am born and raised in Orange County, California.

07. What’s the best thing about your state? The best thing about my state is that there is so very much to see in a day. Where I live, I can drive fifteen minutes to the beach to surf, two hours up the mountains to play in the snow, or one hour in either direction to reach San Diego or Los Angeles to explore the city. Needless to say, my favorite pass time besides drawing is going on day trips.

08. Are there any interesting/unusual spots that you enjoy going to, such as cute little shops or cafes? When it comes to nearby areas, there are some wonderful places around Costa Mesa – such as the OC Mix, which has lovely architecture, as well as various cute little shops like the Portola Coffee Lab. Also in Costa Mesa, there’s the most delicious gourmet doughnuts made by Sidecar, and what’s really great is they have vegan options too. However, if you’re closer to San Juan, there’s a coffee shop called Hidden House and then you can head over to the San Juan Mission which is a fun place to walk around and sketch pictures. I wish I could name every single place, but I would take up about ten pages!

09. Where is the #1 place you would recommend a visiting friend to go to? The top thing I would recommend to my friends to visit would probably be the beaches we have here as well as Disneyland.

10. Why is this place so special? I never realized how much I took all of our beautiful beaches for granted until I had a friend from Colorado visit and all he wanted to do every day was go to the beach because he hadn’t been in ten years. We also went to Disneyland because he said he had never been there. I would definely recommend it if you have the money to go! The amount of thought and creativity Disney puts into every tiny little detail puts me in complete bliss when I’m there. 41

01. Where are you from? I’m originally from Colorado, but I go to school in Oregon.

02. What sparked your initial interest in photography? I have always loved taking pictures, whether it was on disposables or little digital cameras when I was younger. I love the concept of freezing a moment in time. It wasn’t until my later high school years that I got really into photography. I found photography to be a great creative outlet once I quit volleyball, and I really started to find myself through my photography.

03. Once you picked up a camera, what about concert photography really drew you in? I’ve grow up with live music because my dad worked in the concert industry when I was younger. Once I started attending concerts on my own I always wanted to be upfront so I could get good pictures, and it all started with a little show in Denver, where the bands Lydia and Saint Motel were playing. The live action captivated me. I love how every show is unique and how the band engages the audience. I love saving moments that people can look back at and remember their experience at any given concert I’ve shot.

46

04. What is the coolest opportunity you’ve gotten to experience as a result of photography? There are so, so many. But my coolest experience occurred this past month. I had the chance to shoot Sasquatch! which is a huge music festival in the Pacific Northwest. This was an experience unlike any other and was pretty surreal.

05. What is your favorite show you’ve gotten to shoot thus far? It is so hard to pick just one show, but if I had to it would probably be Ben Howard. He is such an incredible musician and the lighting of his show was phenomenal.

06. What equipment do you typically use for shows? In my camera bag, I carry my Canon 6D, a 50mm lens, and a 24-105mm lens. I also usually take along my Instax-Mini Polaroid and sometimes a disposable.

07. What does your typical editing process consist of? My favorite thing to do is to go to my favorite coffee shop, sit down and go through all of my photos and choose the ones I want to edit and then process them in Lightroom.

08. What are some of your local venues where you usually shoot? I spend half my time in Portland where some of my favorite local venues are the Crystal Ballroom and the Wonder Ballroom, and spend the other half of my time in Denver where some of my favorite venues are Red Rocks, the Fillmore Auditorium and the Blue Bird Theater.

09. Is there anything about any of them that make them unique?

photography endeavors. I would love to shoot for a major magazine or publication like NME or Rolling Stone.

12. Do you have any exciting plans or projects that you’re working on? At the moment I’m working on creating a semiannual print magazine for my blog half&half. I also have plans on shooting Denver’s Riot Fest and Underground Music Showcase.

Well my personal favorite is the Crystal Ballroom in Portland and the floor there shakes when you jump or dance or even just walk. It is pretty cool.

10. Which venue would you recommend to a traveling friend and why? 100% Red Rocks, because it is probably one of the coolest venues in the entire world. Seeing any concert there is an experience unlike any other. When musicians play there it is most likely a bucket list item for them. They have a certain glow about them when they are preforming at Red Rocks.

01. how did your group first come together? three of us, mckinley, dylan and zach, grew up together in hood river in oregon. we went through high school together and eventually started making music. kyle joined us a few years into it when he responded to a craiglists ad we put up looking for a drummer.

02. where does the name flor come from? we just really like the name; how it sounds and how clean it is. the more we thought on it the more we thought flor really fit with the music. it has a beautiful ring to it, and we love to think we are making really pleasant and beautiful music.

03. what generally comes first for you, the music or the lyrics? the writing process is always different. sometimes i’ll say something or sing something that really resonates with me and i’ll go from there. but primarily i’ll get inspired by a track i’m working on and come up with lyrics afterwards. for the song to come together and get finished i really need the music and the lyrics to work together though, so oftentimes i won’t even finish a track i’ve started if i can’t find lyrics that are fitting perfectly with the melody i have in mind. if everything is coming along nicely on my end, i’ll send it over to dylan and he works his producing magic and takes the track to the next level.

having it impact them in a way that meets them where they are, without my intentions or situations influencing that moment.

05. how has it been received by your audience? i think people love it. i’m really pleased with the feedback we get. every time we release something new i worry, “does it stack up against the others?” and every time we have people say that it’s our best effort yet and that is such a relief. i’m so lucky i get to write these songs, and that people love them as much as i do.

06. your artwork is awesome. how did you come up with the concepts for it? the art and visuals behind our projects were really important to us. we wanted everything to feel as cohesive as possible. luckily a really close friend and roommate of ours happens to be a visual genius. his name is jade ehlers and he’s been with us every step of the way, really helping to bring our ideas to life and keeping us on track. he spearheaded the designs for all the cover art, taking the ideas of “flor” and bringing them to life.

07. can we expect more music soon? we’re intending on releasing a steady stream of music through these next few months. so yes, more and more music soon.

04. we love your ep “sounds.” what was the inspiration behind it?

08. do you have any upcoming plans or projects that you can tell us about?

the sounds ep draws inspiration from all over the place. musically, i’ve been really inspired by a lot of new artists and old artists alike. i’ll draw inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. whether it’s an insightful lyric from tegan and sara, a sultry smooth melody from years and years, a cool groove from the cars, or a quirky song idea like something regina spektor would do; i could go on and on. i love learning and listening, and then putting my own spin on ideas and making it something entirely different. the stories behind the songs come from everywhere as well. i don’t like to give a concrete answer on what i’m writing a song about simply because i think everyone can see a song from a different angle, and i love the idea of someone encountering one of our songs and

right now we are putting a lot of focus on creating an amazing and immersive live show for our upcoming pop shop west debut. we’re putting a lot of work into it, in an effort to make it a really special and unforgettable night.

09. what are some of your favorite tracks at the moment? right now i’m really looking forward to the new years and years album. i heard one of the songs from the album that hasn’t been released yet at a live show and really want to hear the recorded version of it because i loved it so much. i’ve also been listening to the artist marika hackman. i love everything about her music, specifically “deep green” or “drown.” 53

TALIA SARI

TATTOORARY

Talia Sari is a Tel Aviv based jewelry collection created by Talia Sari Wiener. While completing her BA in industrial design, she began working with a local goldsmith and fell in love with the materials, the proportions and the craft. Inspired by this mix of creative processes, Talia Sari incorporates advanced technology with traditional hand craft to create minimalist pieces of jewelry with a story behind every design.

With the ever increasing popularity of tattoos comes a company that offers real looking temporary tattoos in adorable designs. For those who have been thinking of getting a tattoo but aren’t yet ready to make the commitment, the Tattoorary is a perfect option.

tel aviv, israel

The collection You Are Here, (which the San Francisco map ring is part of) is inspired by city maps. Each city is uniquely influenced by its street grid – at times intricately winding and dead-ended, at times perfectly aligned. Understood without words to locals and yet anonymous to strangers.

sneek, netherlands

The Tattoorary carries a wide selection of high quality temporary tattoo designs including floral, vintage, Delfts Blauw, and other styles. Lasting anywhere from two days to a week depending on how you take care of them, they have the appearance of the real deal and are the perfect accessory.

The 9 cities in the collection were designed to include iconic landmarks, such as the ‘Place de l’Etoile’ in Paris or New York’s ‘Central Park’, while considering composition and aesthetics. The San Francisco design features Market Street running through its center. It emphasizes the boundary of the two street grids running 90 degrees opposite one another. To the designer it also symbolizes the unique character of San Francisco - a very American, organized grid with a twist... Each map is hand drawn at the studio and also hand finished by Talia Sari, in between there is some industrial manufacturing involved.

INDITIQUE

ALL IS YAY

Nothing worn around the neck makes as much of a statement as the handmade jewelry found at Inditique. Being a senior in high school, Madison Vinje finds time away from the busy workload to operate her very own business, titled by combining of the words “indie” and “boutique.” Located on Etsy, her shop consists of necklaces created with stones including amethyst, quartz, bone, and other materials.

Created by 26 year old Elina, AIY (ALL IS YAY) is a brand that was created once her passion for design and textiles took flight. Having an interest in them at the age of seven, Elina took a fashion and textile design course in high school which solidified her passion for creating. In college, she studied culture management and photography. The combination of all of these courses coupled with her desire to work for herself provided her with the knowledge, skills, and drive to start her brand.

esko, minnesota

Some words from creator, Madison: “The business was started in February 2015 after I had taken an interest in crystal healing and wanted to improve not only my life, but the lives of others around me. In my business I use locally sourced Minnesotan materials mostly centered around Lake Superior. I also pick up crystals or sea glass during my frequent travels. It’s like wearing a little piece of the world around your neck.”

riga, latvia

In high school, she remembers being fascinated by screen printing and experimenting with different kinds of crafts. Because each fabric and item is handmade, screen printing allows for as many fabrics as desired to be used while taking minimal time and still possessing the quality that only comes with handmade items. After opening her own studio last year in the art centered industrial district of Riga, she is always inspired and spends the majority of her time there. In September she will study graphic design at a university which will provide her with an even stronger skill set that will take AIY further. berry smoothie bowl on the quest for acai mix to make the perfect acai bowl, we were let down time and time again when our various grocery stores failed to carry what we needed. we decided to implement a different recipe with the same concept, one that included things that you probably already have in your house!

bowl ingredients:

- 1 banana - mixed frozen berries (ours included strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries) - 1/4 - 1/2 cup of a fruit juice (we used orange, but you can also use apple, grapefruit, or whichever you prefer) - optional: 1/2 cup of yogurt

toppings:

- strawberry halves - granola - flax seeds - almonds - anything else you’d like to add simply blend your bowl ingredients until they are at a thick, smoothie consistency, and then add your favorite toppings! it’s absolutely delicious and a lovely, healthy way to start your morning.

77

s’mores cookie bars

ingredients for a 9x16 pan:

- 5 graham crackers - cookie dough (we used a betty crocker rainbow candy mix that required one stick of butter and one egg) - 4 hershey bars - 19 large marshmallows 01. preheat the oven to 350 degrees 02. line the bottom of the pan with a single layer of graham crackers 03. mix your cookie dough, and then spread it evenly on top of the graham crackers, being careful not to break them 04. bake for around 18 minutes, depending on your oven. it should be baked long enough for the dough to be nearly golden brown, but not quite there 05. while that is baking, break the marshmallows into halves 06. after it bakes, take the pan out and on top, add a single layer of hershey’s chocolate bars, completely covering the cookie 07. after that, cover the chocolate with a single layer of marshmallows, placing the sticky side face down 08. broil this on low for 8 minutes, or until your marshmallows are as brown as you want them *because people like their s’mores marshmallows at different “degrees of burnt,” as we call it, when broiling, place your tray as far to the center of the rack and as close to the over door as possible. this way, the marshmallows towards the back will get darker and to the front less dark, meaning there will be a piece at everyone’s preference.

n. the desire to care less about things—to loosen your grip on your life, to stop glancing behind you every few steps, afraid that someone will snatch it from you before you reach the end zone—rather to hold your life loosely and playfully, like a volleyball, keeping it in the air, with only quick fleeting interventions, bouncing freely in the hands of trusted friends, always in play.
