IZZIE + SKY
issue 05 // 01•16
+ ART + PHOTOGRAPHY + MUSIC
Wow, what a whirlwind 2015 was. Since releasing issue 01 last January, we’ve been amazed at the amount of support and kindness we have seen. The magazine has grown in tremendous ways that we only used to dream of (in issue 01, Becca said that her dream feature was with VSCO. Check out page 48). As for Kathryn’s dream feature on Gigi Hadid... hopefully some day. We’d like to say thank you to every single person that has taken a look at this magazine that we are both so passionate about. Taking the time to open up this publication that we absolutely love putting together is such an honor for us, and we really truly thank you. Now, we’re so excited to finally be releasing issue 05, making Izzie + Sky something that has been around for an entire year. The thought blows our minds. The creatives and content that we feature throughout these pages that you’re about to read consists of people with such great amounts of talent that never cease to amaze and inspire us. We hope that your 2016 is amazing, and that when you’re looking for a little inspiration and hope, you can open up this magazine and find exactly what you’re looking for. Love, Becca + Kathryn

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
a look back at our creatives from issue 01.
ben kessler
I’ve spent the better part of this past year bouncing between Philly, NYC, and Nashville to work on new music and improve my songwriting. In September, I was invited by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers to a songwriting workshop with a few other writers. Since, I’ve delved into co-writing and writing for other artists. There’s been a learning curve, but it’s been fun figuring out how to express myself musically in different contexts. I have accumulated a handful of songs that I’m excited about, which rarely happens. So, we’ll see where it goes! On the performing end, I’ve squeezed in about 40 shows throughout the country, sharing the stage with Lisa Loeb, Jeffrey Gaines, and some other peeps. A number of them were sold out too. I also found out that I’ll be moving out to Nashville next year for college, which is exciting. More to come!

This last year, I wrapped up my time studying abroad and landed my first job at an outdoor fun park (I ran go-karts and helped keep the putt putt course running). It took quite some time to settle back into my life in the States, but my summer jobs kept me pretty busy so it sort of forced me to come back to reality. I didn’t really have much time to make any videos or go out and shoot as much as I had hoped to, but I went to as many shows and on as many hikes as I could fit in. I finally got around to playing with my film camera, an Olympus OM-10, as well as making a purchase for my other film camera, the Canon A-1! I’m planning to try and do a handful of shoots with just film in the near future! Let’s cross our fingers that those turn out alright. Fast forward a bit, I’m currently working over at Hot Topic and I have a lot more free time than I did before. It has given me some time to myself to think about what I want to do next with my life both personally and creatively. I decided to catch up on some courses over at a college near my home to get my associates degree in fine arts, so I probably won’t have too much free time on my hands first quarter, but I will find a way to make it work. I actually ended the year by going on a weekend trip alongside talented individuals, who happened to be some of my best mates, thanks to Moment! Moment is a mobile photography company, where they create quality mobile lenses for iPhones! I am so happy that I was given the opportunity to tag along on that trip; it truly opened my mind and my eyes for possible future projects and collabs that I can’t wait to get started on. I am super stoked to see what adventures 2016 holds for everyone. I guess only time will tell!

Last year was dedicated to figuring out where my project, West Ninety, was going. I officially assembled a core team of creatives and formed a sense of direction for the project. West Ninety itself was recreated into something much simpler. Since then, we’ve begun producing our own podcast and VSCO Journal, both of which feature talks with creative individuals, along with other interesting stories – much like the original West Ninety blog. Last year we did see a few failures, which I am proud to say we have worked through as a team. In my eyes, failure is a vital part of this project – of any project. It only shows us where we can improve. More recently the idea of taking West Ninety beyond the digital world has sprouted. This is the ultimate goal, and 2016 is a year about taking the steps necessary in order to achieve that goal. This year is dedicated to fleshing out the rest of the project and making it a publication that inspires other creative individuals. Right now I’m in a really exciting place - trying to turn a once solo project into an inspiration board for creative people across the globe. I’m proud to be on this adventure with my team, working together to reach this goal. 11

01. We are totally completely in awe of your Instagram feed. How has Instagram been an influence in your life? Gosh, thank you so much! What a great little app, that Instagram is. I’ve made some of the best friends thanks to IG. There are so many beautiful and inspiring people to follow and I really love that it’s almost been a journal for me these past few years. Documenting life, adventures and relationships. It’s pretty special.
02. What editing apps do you use? I use a mix of VSCO Cam (for filters) and Afterlight (for brightening, cropping etc.)
03. What are some of your fashion staples or must-haves? I love fashion and dressing up every now and then, but gosh, just give me a good pair of boyfriend jeans and a vintage white tee — those would definitely have to be my staples. I love my classic Adidas sneakers that are fun to wear with dresses or jeans. You can never go wrong with a good collection of chunky knit sweaters, especially during these colder months.
04. We love your space. Do you have any specific tips or ideas for decorating? How about in terms of a budget? I definitely don’t consider myself an interior designer, but it’s been so fun to figure out what we want the inside of our home to look and feel like. It’s been quite the process. When my husband and I got married in 2012, we had to merge our furniture together and make it work for a while. All of his furniture was dark and masculine and mine, bright and minimal. We saved our pennies for some timeless pieces and are
finally creating a space that is cozy and true to both of our styles. I hate that furniture is so expensive, but investing in some quality pieces is really key. I like to thrift smaller pieces like side tables and chairs, but as far as a good dining table or sofa goes, save up and buy something you’ll enjoy for years to come!
05. Where are you located? What are your favorite local shops and cafes? I currently live in Nashville, TN and have been here for almost 5 years! It feels like I’ve been here forever. The city is exploding. I read in an article that Nashville is gaining around 80 people A DAY, which is so crazy. The food scene is incredible here and the local shopping is definitely getting better. For restaurants, my favorites would have to be: City House, Butcher & Bee, Desano Pizza, Epice, Mas Tacos, Mitchell’s Deli, Sunflower Cafe and Martin’s BBQ. For cafes: Steadfast, Crema, and Dose are three of the best! For local shops: Two Son Co., Sisters of Nature, Kore, White’s Mercantile, Nisolo, and Emerson Grace.
06. What albums have you been listening to recently? I love a mix of everything when it comes to music, but have really been enjoying: The new Coldplay album, S. Carey, Daughter, Iron & Wine and Ben Bridwell’s collaboration (so good!), Troye Sivan, and The Japanese House. We always have jazz spinning on the record player and enjoy Bill Evans and Billie Holiday too.
07. Do you have any quotes you live by? I discovered this quote recently and it’s quickly become one of my favorites: “Do not resent your place in the story. Do not imagine yourself elsewhere.
15
Do not close your eyes and picture a world without thorns, without shadows, without hawks. Change this world. Use your body like a tool meant to be used up, discarded and replaced. Better every life you touch.” - N.D. Wilson
08. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? My husband and I traveled through Italy back in September and we’re just dying to go back to Europe. It was such an incredible experience. We’d love to visit Greece, Croatia, Paris, and London one of these days.
09.What is your all time favorite recipe to make? I love to make my family’s pasta and meatballs but it’s a top secret recipe so I can’t really share it. It’s the best pasta sauce you’ll ever have, with the tastiest turkey meatballs. I don’t make it too often since it’s a bit time consuming. For weeknight meals, I’ve been loving Ina Garten’s recipe for Lemon Roasted Engagement Chicken and I always pair it with crispy roasted potatoes and sautéed green beans with shallots. Sounds super fancy but it’s the easiest recipe ever! I love taking the leftover bones from the chicken and making bone broth the next day. Look it up! It’s so delicious and nourishing.

01. At what age did you get into art and illustration?
constantly, in case I get an idea or I have an extra five minutes to draw!
I took my first art class at the Philadelphia Museum of Art when I was six! From then on I took classes at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in high school, and really got into illustration senior year.
05. From where do you gather inspiration?
02. Favorite medium?
06. Do you find that a common theme often comes about in the pieces you create?
I love watercolor. I love the colors I’m able to mix with them; you can never make the same shade twice - and they’re so simple.
03. How has living in NYC affected your art? There is so much to look at here! The fact that I can be in one part of town, and then walk 5 blocks down the street and feel like I’m on the other side of the world astounds me. The diversity here is amazing. The people are inspiring. I love it.
04. What is your typical environment for creating your art? I like nature, so I’ll sit outside on a blanket with music playing and draw, or if it’s cold I’ll sit at my kitchen table. It’s this giant cozy, wooden table. In general, I carry around a sketchbook with me
20
Living things! Mostly people and plants, and everything in between. I’ve been really inspired by architecture lately.
Yeah, I’m a big believer in the theme of flowers relating to people in the sense that we all grow and are all beautiful no matter the shape or size… I end up drawing plants a lot when I’m sketching.
07. What has been your biggest accomplishment so far with your art? I did a piece for Lenny Letter, Lena Dunham’s new online newsletter! It was featured on Cosmo and Dazed Magazine as well!
08. Where would you like your art to take you in the future? I’m thinking about publishing a book sometime soon! But I just like getting messages or photos people send in to me saying how much they love my work. It’s so nice.

01. Where are you from? What is your favorite part about where you live? I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I love it here. It has that big-city, small-city feel to it. Plus, we have a National Park that’s just a 25 minute drive away, meaning you can enjoy the city life but also escape into nature really quickly.
02. At what age did you start getting into photography? I really started getting into photography at the age of 27. It’s never too late to find your creative outlet.
03. How has Instagram played a part in your photography? Instagram pushes me daily to get better and more creative, which is so important. Seeing others post really great images every day is an easy motivator.
04. Who are some of your favorite people to follow on Instagram?
I started bringing my camera along. Plus, he’s great at posing for photos. Oliver, my cat, loves hunting and eating food, which is probably why he’s gotten so plump. I felt he was getting a bit lonely, so I adopted Apple with my girlfriend Dominique (@domly). She’s the sweetest, most entertaining cat in the world. Growing up, I hated cats and never met a nice one. Now, I get it.
06. What’s your favorite part about shooting weddings? What’s the hardest part? I pride myself on being able to tell a story. Scrolling through the final images that reveal the feeling and emotion of the day is easily my favorite. The hardest part is probably culling through 3,000 images to get those final ones.
07. Is there any particular place you’re dying to travel to? I’ve wanted to visit the Netherlands for quite a while now. The canal systems and buildings are so beautiful.
This is hard. My answer could change week to week. Locally, @minkwilliams really engages in the community and is very creative. Across the pond and located in London is @hernamewascharlie. I love pastels; she finds them everywhere. South in Puebla, Mexico, is @amchphotography. Alejandro Campos’s minimal style and tones are always perfect.
08. Do you have any photography tips for those just starting out?
05. Tell us about the adorable pets that you have.
09. Where do you hope your photography will take you in the future?
My pets! To be honest, I owe a lot of my progress in photography to my high energy dog, Hunter. He is the reason I was out in nature so much, and
Shoot as much as possible. Ask a lot of questions or find your answers online. Composition is everything. Compose the image with your eyes before you pull out your camera. Look for soft or filtered light.
I’d like to move into more lifestyle or portrait work.

01. Can you describe to our readers what you do? I use magazine clippings to create handmade collages. I then take a photo of them, edit them and post them to Instagram.
02. We think your art is so intriguing and visually stimulating. How did you initially come up with the idea? I started thinking about it last year in an art class where we had to present a collage as part of a project to display our understanding of the principles and elements of design. My professor really loved it, so I started playing around in my garage.
03. What inspired you to make art out of cut out magazines? Magazines are fairly inexpensive art materials, and every month they release new ones, so I always have new content to work with.
04. How do you come up with
32
different concepts and ideas? I always start with the fashion image and work around it. Sometimes I try to vibe the image with the vibe of the brand or the model, and sometimes I create something different. I try to keep the brand in mind as well as what I think they would like.
05. What are some of your favorite magazines? For content, I have been really impressed with Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar this year. For artsier things, I go to my favorites, which are W Magazine, V Magazine, and Essential Homme.
06. How would you describe your art in one word? Crazy.
07. Do you have any future goals you’d like to accomplish with your art? I want to continue commissioned works and eventually be a contributor to a magazine in some capacity.

01. Can you explain to our readers what you do? I’m a photographer most of the time, and an art director/designer some of the time. I’m currently getting more involved in directing films... I’m doing a documentary at the moment.
02. At what age did your interest in this really take off? I got into photography back in 2001. My step father was photographed at Ground Zero on September 11th by Magnum photographer Larry Towel. The photo was published everywhere, and looking back at how I got into photography, that seems like the moment when I realized it was something I really connected with.
03. Do you prefer to shoot with film or digital? I started on film, moved to digital, and for the past four years or so shoot on either, depending on the project. Some projects don’t need large images. For personal work, I almost always shoot film (at least at the moment, things are always subject to change).
04. How did you originally come up with the concept for The 1975’s campaign? I didn’t! I took the photos, had plenty of creative input when shooting/planning, but these sorts of concepts/productions are too big to come from just the photographer... many ideas came
36
from the band, or the label, or the art director.
05. What do you think is the main aspect of it that has helped with its success thus far? It’s definitely something that got people talking. Perhaps it was the drastic change from the black and white feel that previously accompanied the band’s image? Yeah it was a grand reveal and massive shift from the previous artwork. People didn’t expect it.
06. What is the planning process like for this sort of campaign? I do plan the photoshoots, which takes a lot of time and effort from everybody involved.
07. What are some other projects you’ve been a part of? Anything you’re especially proud of? I’ve worked with a lot of great musicians in recent years like Django Django, Glass Animals, and Haerts. I am obviously very proud of this 1975 campaign, and also very proud of recent projects which are on my site chloridecity.com, or are yet unreleased!
08. Do you have any upcoming plans or projects that you can tell us about? Yes, I’m doing another book called Through All, which features black and white photos from 2014/15. I will have an exhibition in March of some work I shot in Death Valley too.

LILLIE BENNETT ig // @lifewithlil
A lot of people we know dream of exploring the world and coming face to face with great and iconic sites such as the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Opera House‌ you name it. Lillie Bennett, a girl with a travel history (and closet!) to envy has done just that. After spending a semester abroad studying in Australia and making a few hops over to New Zealand during her time there, Lillie has gotten to do some things the rest of us dream of. She’s a gal with a well-conditioned passport and a great sense of style to match.
01. Where are you from? I am from Medinah, IL; a small suburb northwest of Chicago.
02. What are some of your favorite spots (shops/cafes) in your hometown? One of my favorite cafes close to home is Blackberry Market. The overall vibe of the cafe is great, and the best thing about it is that they serve Intelligentsia Coffee! They also have lots of choices for yummy, healthy food. My other favorite cafe is River City Roasters. It’s super convenient because it is located right next to where I work at Wheaton College. Sometimes I even run over there during my lunch break to grab an almond milk latte, my caffeinated drink of choice.
03. We absolutely love your style. From where do you draw inspiration? Thank you! One of the first places I look to for inspiration is my mom. She has always been so stylish. When I was growing up, I loved sneaking into her closet to try on all of her clothes and was always wishing that I could fit into her shoes. Luckily, we wear the same size in both clothes and shoes now. It is the absolute best. I also draw inspiration from the catalogues of my favorite stores. I especially love the Free People and Urban Outfitters catalogues. I love seeing the different ways that everything is styled and often recreate a similar look for myself, usually with a few tweaks here and there to make it my own.
04. What are some of your necessities in terms of fashion for these cold winter months? Chunky sweaters are essential. This year, December in Chicago was unusually “warm,” with almost no snow the entire month. However, it is starting to really cool off now with the transition into 2016, so a good winter coat is also a must have!
05. What are some of your current
40
fashions staples that you find yourself wanting to wear every day? When I was in Australia, I bought a pair of leather black booties from Windsor Smith. Definitely one of my best purchases this year! I wear them almost every single day. They are so comfortable and go with almost every single outfit I put on. Another current obsession – turtlenecks. I can’t get enough! I recently found this old, black scarf in my coat closet and now I cannot stop wearing it! It goes so well with my long, trench-style winter coat and makes every single outfit I wear underneath look more put together.
06. Where are some of the coolest places you’ve gotten to travel to and what made them so unique? I very recently returned from a semester abroad studying in Sydney, Australia. Australia is such an incredible country, and I was fortunate enough to go beyond Sydney to a few other cities as well. Although I was able to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef during a trip to Cairns and see the Great Ocean Road while on a trip to Melbourne, Sydney is the city that stole the show. There is so much to do that it is almost overwhelming at times! From the iconic Opera House to all of the famous beaches, Sydney has so much to offer. Their cafe/coffee culture is also unreal! Being home now, I think that is one of the facets of the city that I miss the most! While I was studying abroad in Australia, I was also able to make my way over to New Zealand. The landscape of the country is absolutely stunning with its breathtaking mountains and lakes. A very unique experience I had while in New Zealand? I decided to bungee jump! It was the most thrilling moment (that moment being an 8 second free fall) of my life and I cannot wait to one day do it again. Earlier this year, I traveled to Arizona with my family during the time of my spring break. We started in Phoenix and made our way north through the state, stopping in beautiful places like Sedona
41
42
and ending up in the absolutely spectacular Page. Page was the highlight of the entire trip, because we were able to visit Antelope Canyon. Although I grew up traveling the world, one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen lies right inside the United States. Even as you are walking through Antelope Canyon, it is hard to believe such a place exists. The colors of the rocks change depending on where you are inside the canyon and the way the light hits them makes it a photographer’s paradise.
unique country and I cannot wait until the day that a trip there becomes a reality!
07. Do you have any travel plans lined up?
Base • 1 full tray of ice •1 banana sliced • 8 oz. Vitality Raw Chocolate Mayan Spice •1 tbsp. raw cacao powder Topping • 2 oz. Steve’s Paleo Goods Original Grainless Granola • 2 oz. raw superfood granola • Handful of blueberries • Handful of raspberries Any of the granola could be substituted for different types, but those are two of my favorites.
As of right now, none of my travel plans are certain. Since both of my parents work in the airline industry, we are able to travel quite often, and we enjoy planning what some would consider “last minute trips.” Since I am currently going to school in San Diego, I am in the process of trying to plan some road trips that can be done in a weekend! A few of the options are Joshua Tree National Park, San Luis Obispo, and Big Sur. My family is trying to plan a trip for us to take together over spring break. As of right now, we are thinking of doing a little bit of skiing and snowboarding!
09. On your Instagram (which we LOVE by the way), you have posted photos of so many yummy looking smoothie bowls! What is your favorite recipe that you can share with our readers? First off, thank you! Smoothie bowls are absolutely amazing and they are relatively easy to make. Here is one of my favorite recipes:
08. Where would you most like to travel to?
10. Do you have any cool projects or plans that you’re currently working on that you can share with us?
This is a tough question for me, because there are so many places that I’m itching to visit! If I could jump on a plane and go anywhere right now, it would probably be Iceland. I’m absolutely intrigued. A lot of my favorite Instagrammers that I follow, mostly photographers, have been going there to shoot, and it looks completely unreal. From the rugged terrain to the small, quaint towns, it seems to be such a
Since I began working as a painter at Wheaton College two years ago, I have been able to apply this newly acquired skill in my own home! After my first summer, I painted my own bedroom and I have to say it looks pretty great. My mom has even hired me now to paint my brother’s bedroom as well. I am starting to think I might score a few more painting jobs for family and friends in the future.

01. How did you get started with illustration? Ever since I was a kid I’ve been drawing. In middle school I was obsessed with drawing characters in trendy clothes; I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer at the time. In high school my style evolved but I was always fascinated with drawing people. That hasn’t changed! Despite my obsession with fashion and drawing, I decided to go to college for Psychology. I eventually lead myself back into the arts, landing a Graphic Design job in NYC that inspired me to get back into my personal illustration.
02. What inspired the name “tigermlk?” Well, one night I was pondering what to call myself. I thought Victoria Skinner illustration sounded boring. While looking around my Brooklyn apartment for inspiration, I spotted a record by Belle & Sebastian called Tigermilk and thought that was an interesting name (plus, it’s one of my favorite albums). So, there you have it!
03. We see that you often draw inspiration from fashion brands – is there a particular season that you often look back to? I love fall fashion, hands down. I love the darker colors, the mulberry lips, and the plaid!
04. Where are you from? Has living here had any effect on your art, such as an inspiration element? Currently, I live in Brooklyn, New York. This has definitely inspired what and who I draw! I see people on the subway every day that inspire me with their outfit choices. People dress up just to go to the grocery store around here. Inspiration is everywhere!
05. What is the process of your illustrations, from the initial concept to the finished product? I get a lot of my inspiration from Instagram, whether it be fashion bloggers or brands posting photos of their lookbooks. I’ll usually connect to a certain photo and use that as the basis of a drawing. I draw in pencil and then scan the drawing into my computer to enhance it in Photoshop.
06.
Do
you
work
better
in
certain
environments over others? I work the best when I’m at home in my drawing corner of the living room and have a good Netflix series on!
07. What do you think it is about your work that makes it so intriguing to others? I’m not sure. It could be that I’m drawing fashion trends that other people are interested in. It’s interesting to see those trends in a photo of a person, but it’s another thing to see it interpreted in an illustration.
08. Do you find a theme that comes about in a lot of what you create? I think the main theme of my drawings are clean lines and a splash of color. I like the simplicity and effectiveness of that.
09. What has been your proudest moment in relation to your work? My proudest moment in my illustration career would have to be working on the Spring/Summer and Fall/ Winter style guides for the German scarf and accessories company Georgio PassiGatti. That was so much fun, yet really challenging.
10. How do you wish to share your work with others? I love sharing my work on Instagram because people can comment and we can start a conversation. I love to get to know people and it’s interesting what people connect to.
11. Do you have any other hobbies or talents that you enjoy besides your art? I love music, and some of my favorites include Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Tame Impala, and Hot Chip.
12. Where do you want your craft to take you in the future? I would love to collaborate with brands or magazines and get more editorial work.
13. Do you have any upcoming plans or projects? I have some plans for an upcoming art show in the NYC area! 47

01. Tell us how VSCO came to be. VSCO was started in 2011 in California - our goal was simply to create fantastic photography tools for the modern creative. We launched VSCO Film, digital film emulation presets for Lightroom and Photoshop, then followed up with VSCO Cam, our mobile app for image editing. Shortly after, we launched VSCO Grid, our minimalistic publishing platform. We want to be the place where people everywhere can create utilizing our tools and discover interesting content from other people around the world.
02. What was the inspiration for creating VSCO Film? Is there a specific film that sparked the idea? VSCO Film was created based out of a need for more creative tools. Our co-founders were particularly inspired by analog film and that’s something that was carried into VSCO film.
03. What is the main goal behind creating VSCO Cam? VSCO Cam was created as a means to bring our superior editing technology to mobile, lowering the barrier to entry and expanding our audience. We saw a hugely positive response and it’s now amongst the top downloaded photography apps of all time!
04. Talk about the VSCO Grid. We admire that VSCO doesn’t display any numbers on personal Grids. What was the decision behind this? VSCO Grid is a selection of images uploaded by the VSCO Community. Because it’s curated it provides a diverse and inspirational selection of photographs. On personal grids we don’t display following number or allow for likes and comments, and this was an intentional decision on our part. We want VSCO to
be a place where people can feel safe and inspired to create as well as share their work.
05. Any advice or inspiration for those who want their photos to be displayed on the Grid? We’re always featuring different community members. I think the best advice we can give is to continue to play and diversify your content. Interesting subjects paired with great lighting is always a winning combination.
06. How did the Artist Initiative come to be? As an art and technology company, we’re always interested in helping people accomplish their creative projects. The Artist Initiative is something that we always wanted to do; it’s a statement about what is important to us and what we value as a company.
07. Describe your office setting. We have two offices, one in Oakland, CA and another in NYC. Both are open office format and have a very casual vibe and clean aesthetic.
08. Congrats on the recent release of DSCO! How has the feedback been so far? Thank you, feedback on DSCO has been great! We’re really excited to see all of the different ways our community is using the app.
09. What are some future plans for the company? We’ll be announcing new product features in January that we’re really excited about as well as some cool editorial initiatives, all with the goal to give community members more means of creation as well as helping them discover great content on VSCO!

01. Where did the name come from? The idea for the name originally came from us thinking about and looking at albums and photos of our favorite bands and/or artists. We noticed how often a plain white t-shirt would be worn. We also thought about how cool and iconic Marlon Brando and James Dean were in a white t-shirt. There were a few other names in the running but Plain White T’s seemed to stick. The plain white tee is timeless and classic, and that is how we go about making our music.
02. What has been the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome as a band? I feel like we’re in that moment right now. Being independent again has had its challenges in terms of now having all of the control and being our own record label, but at the same time it has been freeing and nice to be independent again. It has been a long time since we’ve been fully independent so we’re just figuring that all out again.
03. You just finished up a tour. How was it? Were there any particularly memorable moments? The tour was great. We hadn’t done a headlining tour in awhile so it was nice getting out there and connecting with our core fan base. Honestly, one of the best shows was Philly. It had been years since we played at The Troc and the crowd was great. Another standout moment was our stop in El Paso. There were a lot of people who drove in from Mexico which was cool and unexpected. There were times that the crowd was so loud we couldn’t even hear ourselves.
04. Where are some of your favorite places you’ve seen as a result of touring? Lately we’ve done a few tours for Navy Entertainment,
where we’ve gone to a few places across the world to play for our troops. This year we went to a few cities in Japan. We also got a chance to go to Guam and Kauai. It was pretty incredible to have the opportunity to travel to those places and play for our troops.
05. What are some of the weirdest things you’ve seen on the road over the past few years? We were in Okinawa earlier this year, and they have this liquor called “habu sake,” which is liquor that has a venomous snake drowned in the jar. It was pretty weird, and definitely hurt the next day.
06. Do you have any favorite items that you like to wear when performing? Tom always has to wear a leather jacket on stage these days when we play. Even if it’s hot out, he still wears it. I think it is like a good luck jacket for him even though he wears a few different ones.
07. You’ve been in the music industry for a long time. It’s often hard for musicians to have such long term success. What would you say really made that possible for you? Our first manager told us that if we wanted to be successful don’t break up, and that stuck with us. This business can be a roller coaster but we’ve just never stopped riding it. Also, our songs seem to mean something to a lot of people, and that’s because they mean something to us. That has definitely been a major factor in our success.
08. What advice do you have for up and coming young artists? My advice would be to never give up and always try to be as good as you can be. Figure out what your strengths are, focus on that, work hard, and go.

01. Tell us how you came together and where the name Cardboard Kids came from. We all grew up together in East Texas. We were each in separate bands that all played shows together in our little town, so there was always a respect for one another. Eventually, as most people in that area do, everyone else that was playing music around us hit an age where they felt like they had to get a “real job” and we were pretty much the last three people that were still passionate about playing music. So we did. And as far as the name, Cardboard Kids, there really isn’t a great story. I’m sorry haha. A good friend of ours from Kansas City jokingly said that if he ever started a hip hop group, he’d call it Cardboard Kids and I was like, “uh, hey that’s dope... mind if I snag that?” And that’s really it.
02. Who are some of your inspirations? We dig a lot of 90’s Rock and current hip hop. I think the one thing that all three of us agree on completely across the board would be Third Eye Blind. Specifically, the self titled album. But we also really love the culture that surrounds the hip hop community. I’d honestly say that that culture is equally, if not more inspiring to us than the genre itself.
03. How would you describe your music to someone who has never listened to you before? Man, I don’t know. A genre these days is such a weird thing and honestly pretty nonexistent. These days you just have to rattle off like 3 bands you sound (kind of) like and hope they’ve even heard of one of those bands. I don’t know. I guess 83
I’d just tell this person that it’s rock and roll. Straight up rock and roll.
but I don’t know how much I can actually speak on it at the moment.
04. Congrats on the release of your new EP! What has been the response to “HIGH” thus far?
07. We love your vibe... any particular reason you chose to do things in black and white?
Thank you! It’s been phenomenal. We’re so excited that we were able to put that out and that people are reacting so well. It’s a small handful of songs that are pretty scattered across the board so we didn’t know what people would think. Actually, the song “OVER” was the song we were most nervous about people understanding as it was coming from us, but we’ve found out that’s kind of become a favorite for a lot of people.
I think we did it just because of the uniformity of it all. It’s consistent and well branded for what we are. In this day of music, as much as we all want to be emotional artists or whatever and that’s it, we’re all ambassadors of our individual products. We run a business and that is our brand. If bands or artists don’t think that way, they aren’t going to go very far. So music aside, as a business, you have to specify the brand. And we chose a grey scale brand for ourselves and stuck with it. Wouldn’t it be weird if McDonald’s decided to start using blue every now and then? Consistency is key.
05. What has been your most memorable show so far? Most memorable show… hmm… every time we play in Nashville, it feels like a movie. We’re very romantically in love with the city. I guess if I had to pinpoint a single show, I’d say that it would be one that we played last year at 12th and Porter in Nashville. We’d never played the venue. We knew nothing about the place. There were only tickets at the door. We had no idea how it would go or if anyone would care. We finished our soundcheck and our guitar tech grabbed me and asked if I had been outside yet. When I peaked out, there was a thick line wrapping around the building and into traffic already. It ended up selling out and the venue apparently turned away about 70 more people, unfortunately. The show was insane.
06. What are you goals as a band, especially for 2016? Where would you like your music to take you? We’re recording a lot in 2016. We’ll also be on the road a good bit. There are things and goals set in place and in motion already,
84
08. What is it like to be on tour with Relient K? What has been the best moment thus far? We love Relient K. They were one of my favorite bands growing up. Both of the Matt’s live in Nashville so we hang out a lot. Matt Hoopes is kind of like my big brother, so it was cool to go on the road with people that we already knew and loved rather than the awkward first few days of shaking hands and trying to remember names backstage. The favorite moment would definitely be when Relient K had us come out for the encore to play a cult favorite or theirs, Deathbed. It’s an 11 minute, super powerful song. Cool moment every night for sure.
09. Any exciting upcoming plans you can tell us about? Well...I still can’t go way into detail but there is a lot of new music coming very soon. Like, really soon. And not just one release of it. A few. We’re excited.

01. How did you meet? A few of us knew each other through other bands we were playing in at the time. I actually met Josh (drummer) for the first or second time at one of our first rehearsals!
02. What has been the biggest turning point for your career? When we signed with our label Wonderlick. This allowed us budgets for touring and our first album, not to mention industry momentum and a great new family!
03. How would you describe your music in three words? Delicate, moody, & dynamic.
04. What are the best and worst things about being on tour? Best: Traveling, performing, and stuffing around with your mates. Worst: Missing my wife and my dog back home, and missing out on special moments such as weddings, births, etc.
05. Do you draw any inspiration from other specific musicians? Personally, I draw inspiration in different ways from artists like Plants and Animals,
Rogue Wave, and Ryan Adams, to name a few.
06. Where is your favorite place to play in terms of country, city, or venue? The Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn was our last show of our recent North American tour, and that’s been one of my favourite venues to play. Also, the Troubadour in LA, and the Athenaum Theatre in Melbourne are really great.
07. Have fans ever come up with funny interpretations of what they think one of your songs means? Yes. A friend of mine is a teacher in Brisbane, and his whole class came up with different back stories for the character in the St. Clarity video. Some of the stories were so good.
08. Anything exciting coming up that you can tell us about in terms of projects, tours, music, etc.? We’re really excited about this first European tour we’re on! We’ll be playing some cities that we’ve always wanted to go to. Our show in Amsterdam sold out in a week and had to be moved to a bigger venue which is great!
Keep an eye out for their limited edition transparent purple Twelvefour LP, coming out soon!

01. How did you come together? Kenny and I grew up together in Prince George’s County, MD and have been writing together for three and a half years. We met Isabelle in 2012, when we were looking for a drummer for our old rock band. She was a senior at the University of Maryland at the time and replied to a flyer that Kenny posted on campus. She came over for an audition. We were very impressed with her musicianship and her attitude. We also all really enjoyed spending time with each other outside of the band; which was a bonus.
02. What has been the biggest show for you? Our biggest show was opening for Walk the Moon at the University of Delaware a few months ago. Performing for around 4,000 people definitely felt different than the smaller clubs and venues we’ve played in the past, but it was a really good time. College shows are awesome because the audience is always excited and open.
03. Do you have any interesting pre/post show rituals? We do! We do a group huddle and say a little prayer. That’s Isabelle’s influence because she’s Catholic, as the rest of us aren’t particularly religious. We all benefit from it though; it’s important to get the collective consciousness of the group up before a show so you play well as a team. It also majorly helps with nerves. Our pre-show ritual is probably similar to that of a number of sports teams.
04. What’s the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened on stage? We played a show at the University of New
Hampshire a couple months ago and I totally blanked on the words of the last song. That has never happened before, and will never happen again. In my defense, the song was a collaboration with another singer, and it was her part that I spaced out on. I basically started scatting out of panic and then did a really weird dance move so that I could turn away from the audience and make eye contact with my bandmates. No one would look at me because we were all about to explode with laughter. We didn’t laugh until we were offstage, but it’s important to be able to laugh in those situations.
05. Where is the coolest place music has taken you? Touring with Albert Hammond Jr. was one of the greatest experiences of our lives. It was our first tour and he asked us to be his opener. That doesn’t happen very often; usually tours are acquired through booking or management. Albert and his team also treated us super well, which is never a guarantee on a tour and makes for a completely different experience. They shared gear and space and watched us play. We got to perform in major cities that we’d never seen before on the east coast and in the midwest. We played in Canada. It was magical.
06. Describe your writing process. Is there a certain environment you write best in? We use what we’ve got. We write in studios, bedrooms, basements, cars, etc. Kenny tends to prefer quiet spaces so he can relax and I tend to prefer more chaotic city environments because they stimulate me. The writing process is different every time and it is still evolving, but it usually starts with Kenny’s production, then I write the vocals, then

Isabelle writes her drum parts. Isabelle also plays piano though, so sometimes we just jam and take turns composing melodies.
07. What is your top goal for 2016? We are about to release our first full length album this year; so our top goal for 2016 would probably be to tour the album in Europe. I’ve never been to Europe and am dying to go.
08. When we saw you perform in Delaware last November, your performance was phenomenal. Do any shows in particular stick out to you in terms of performance, location, the crowd, etc.? Yes. We played under a clear tent on the rooftop of a bar in the rain at SXSW last year and it was surreal. We played Cleveland on tour with Albert and the audience was so gracious and excited and supportive. We ended up hanging out with the fans all night after the show. There was a show earlier this year in New York that reminded us of why we are working so hard to do this. Those are just a few.
09. Do you have any exciting upcoming plans in terms of music, touring, etc., that you can share with us? We are releasing our first album soon and we are very excited to share it. We write new music every day, and we’re just planning to enjoy watching this thing continue to unfold.
