Penguin bo A Clockwo
ook cover ork Orange Why I chose this brief I chose this brief as it was a brief that I needed to use both typographic and illustrative skills and considerations. The combination of the two is something I would like to explore further in my practice. I also had previous knowledge of the book ‘A clockwork orange’ making it easier for me to generate ideas.
Production The production of the book was illustrative in style/approach. This was informed by the previous winners style and also the intricacy I was capable of creating with a hand-drawn design was much greater than a digital one. I used 100gsm paper to illustrate the different sections on; this allowed me to layer things up accurately.
Evaluation In reflection I feel my final outcome is successful. It depicts the long nosed mask the main character Alex wears in one of the most iconic chapters of the book. Within this mask shape I illustrated various patterns representative of his bi-polar and sadistic mental state.
Chicago Latin
no film festival Why I chose this brief I chose this brief as I felt it was an opportunity to communicate the ‘indie film’ scene which is something I am personally really interested in. To be able to display something of this nature within my portfolio could open up a possible dialogue with independent producers themselves who need designers.
Production The main element of production was hand drawn typography designed to create an instant impact and reinforce the idea that the film festival is a celebration of DIY film-makers.
Evaluation This design is successful in representing the Latino background of the festival due to it’s type and colour choices. It also personally opens up my body of work to new and adventurous things. It’s allowed me to combine illustration, typography and digital design into something that looks appealing and appropriate.
Secret 7 -
Chvrches Why I chose this brief I decided to produce designs for all 7 of the songs in this years secret 7 line up. It allowed me to produce designs in different styles with differing techniques. It meant I could explore and demonstrate my broadness and abilities for varying styles within graphic design. I’ve chosen to display the design I did for Chvrches - Clearest Blue as this design was chosen to be part of the exhibition.
Production The production of this piece was done using photography then digitally edited. This decision was informed both by research and the genre of music. The song is ‘techno’ and produced digitally itself so I felt it was appropriate for the design to follow this same rule.
Evaluation The design was inspired by the idea of human obsession and infatuation. I think my photography successfully captured this concept. The execution was inspired by the song title in terms of colour choice and composition. All in all it was clearly suitable as it was chosen to be part of secret 7 2016.
Munro hous
se print fair Why I chose this brief I was approached by Munro House and asked to produce 3 traditional print based posters. This was a brilliant opportunity to explore my personal style that I wanted to ‘put out to the world’ and to make some lasting contacts in the local industry.
Production I produced the prints mainly illustratively to express my style and skills I can offer; also to appeal to the creative target audience. I screen printed the posters as this gave them continuity but also used a marble technique so each print was slightly different and bespoke.
Evaluation The print fair was really successful and I sold lots of prints and got myself some brilliant exposure within the local arts community. It gave me a chance to show off my style and also get to know the organisers of the exhibitions and various events in Leeds. I have also gone on to send out samples of these prints to design agencies to help make contacts further afield in the design industry. It allowed me to visualise my place within professional industry and express a more illustrative style I don’t usually show much within my work.
Brompton bicy
ycle animation Why I chose this brief This brief gave me the opportunity to work with animated/film outcomes and media rather than the static designs im used to. I want to expand my skill base to be inclusive of all deliverables to be able to offer clients as much as possible. This was a start to creating a portfolio of kinetic work. The company is well known and to of won and got publicity would be a great source of advertisement and connection for me.
Production I used stop motion photography to produce this video; it made me realise and appreciate just how long this kind of animation takes. Attention to detail and care with the way everything moved smoothly and coherently was of the up-most importance. To create the elements I papercut each part; this was due to the possibilities of all variations in colour of stock giving me variety and a bold appearance.
Evaluation The outcome successfully expresses my lust for exploring new and different outcomes within design and creative direction. It shows the bright and colourful aesthetic that Brompton bikes pride themselves on providing and expresses a creative and fun feeling.
Feathr wallp
paper design Why I chose this brief I chose this brief as it had completely free reign and no constraints; making it completely up to me and my imagination to come up with a concept. It also allowed me to develop the new skill of creating a repeat surface pattern.
Production To produce the design I explored artists and works that are considered to be iconic and the contrast between that and the digital age of illustration and graphic design. To bridge the gap between the two I used a digital drawing tablet to illustrate my representations of some of these iconic artworks. I then followed directions on how to create a split and stick method repeat pattern tile.
Evaluation This design uses bright coloured digital illustration and the subject of iconic artwork to question and re-define what we now consider as art in the digital age. It was my literal representation of the line ‘art as wallpaper’ specified within the brief.

ors the brave Why I chose this brief The brief seemed to give the most free reign out of all the D&AD options. Me and Jazz felt together we had a great sense of idea generation and this challenge would enable us to show this most effectively.
Production The production involved a lot of communication between me and Jazz in terms of allocating specific tasks and sharing full responsibility of others. I personally took control of packaging/ net design, vector design, typography, collateral, mock ups, screen printing, video and film editing. In terms of production briefs this has the most variation of elements and techniques so far. It demonstrates my capabilities in lots of fields and how im able to bring them all together.
Evaluation The final design/concept/presentation all successfully show a broad range of creative skills and successfully answer the brief. I feel if this package was actually produced and the skills within them were educated to students this would benefit how art disciplines are delivered massively. But for me the final outcome isn’t the only success of this brief. It allowed me to work coherently with another person much more smoothly than in previous collaborations. I’ve made a strong contact for life and plan to work alongside Jazz again in the future.
