Acting President’s Message Welcome to the Garden State Watercolor Society’s 2019 Annual Juried Exhibit. It is our first time exhibiting at this lovely facility and we thank the AOY Art Center for their generosity and support. In particular, I want to thank AOY Art Center Representatives Bette Sovinee, Coordinator, Susan Cohen, Board Show Committee Chair and the entire AOY Art Center Board. It has been particularly nice to meet and work with so many talented Pennsylvania artists. This exhibit is titled On the Road to 50 Years. This special exhibit focuses on all aspects of travel: The journey through life, a journey around the world, or a journey into the future. I hope you enjoy viewing the concept of travel through our artists eyes and experiences. You will also notice an art installation that we have included in this exhibition called Head and Shoulders. This installation was put together with paper donated by the Winsor and Newton Company and a challenge put to GSWS artists. The challenge was to paint anyone’s head and shoulders on the 5 x 7 inch paper using only two of the three primary colors. What has resulted is an endlessly fascinating group of portraits. This is our second and final showing of the Head and Shoulders installation. We want to thank our nationally known artist, Gail Bracegirdle, who has done a great job choosing the art for this exhibition then having the difficult job of selecting the award winners. I was fortunate to have the diligent work of my co-chair, Lois Westerfield. She kept me on track and accomplished many of the tedious and important jobs that go into making an exhibit a success. Thank you Lois! A special 4

thanks to Linda Arnold for her help securing donations. Thank you to our benefactors and sponsors and, once again to Joanne Amantea for her never ending expertise and support. Thank you to Sue Beym for her beautiful graphic designs and social media efforts and Margaret Simpson for her help with press releases. Last but not least, I want to thank our talented hanging crew lead by the incomparable Joan Capaldo and the easygoing Robert Lowe. I want to encourage other artists and art lovers to come and enjoy the art of the many events that are planned. Enjoy!

Our Juror

The juror for acceptance and awards for the GSWS On the Road to 50 Years, 2019 Exhibition is Gail Bracegirdle. Gail is a representational artist whose watercolors are filled with light and color. Gail is a signature member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, her paintings are actively exhibited in juried, group and solo shows throughout the region, have won awards, and are held in private collections in the United States, Europe and Australia. She lives and works in Bucks County, PA.

"It was a pleasure for me to jury the On the Road to 50 Years exhibition for the Garden State Watercolor Society. As artists, we choose to work in watercolor because we are drawn to the infinite variations that can be created with the simple elements of pigment and paper. The artists chosen for this exhibition are skilled in this challenging medium and have taken on the task of representing many stories and interpretations of travel. I was impressed by the variety of entries and think that the quality of work is exceptional. -Gail Bracegirdle

ABOUT AOY ART CENTER The AOY Art Center is pleased to host the Garden State Watercolor Society “On the Road to Fifty Years Exhibition! We invite members of GSWS to join the AOY Art Center community. Member benefits include Open Studio (a place to work on your art with fellow artists, M&F 9:30-noon), participation in monthly facilitated Critique Night, and discounts on classes and workshops. AOY Art Center has grown to over 225 members who range from beginning students to nationally known professional artists. Our programs are exciting and innovative and are taught by professional instructors. Throughout the year AOY offers many opportunities for artists to bring their work to the public including four member-only shows, adding to artists visibility. AOY Art Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the creative spirit of the community by educating and encouraging individuals to experience, appreciate, and share in the arts. The various shows were developed, a partnership with Pennsbury High School was formed, adult and youth education, and kids camp programs were initiated and have grown every year. Programs and events are held throughout the year focused on both learning and community. The Center has been located in the Janney House on the Patterson Farm which has been leased from Lower Makefield Township since 2010. Built in 1837 around the original one-room farmhouse with the original stone hearth dating to 1730. The original pine floors are still in place and were restored a few years ago. The 230-acres surrounding the Center are preserved farmland and are actively farmed. This location affords a spectacular setting year-round as inspiration to artists of all mediums.

ABOUT The art installation The Head and Shoulders Art Installation is a first for the Garden State Watercolor Society. To create the installation, artists were challenged to limit their pallets to two of the three primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and to paint on 5 x 7 inch paper donated by the Winsor Newton art supply company. Over 80 artists painted 100 paintings. These wonderfully varied portraits reflect the artists impressions of their friends and family, or people from their imagination. Head and Shoulders represents the excitement that comes from what is created by one individual is grouped with others to become a unique and interesting whole. Enjoy!
