President’s Message
Welcome to the Garden State Watercolor Society’s 49th Annual Juried Exhibition. This exhibition displayed in Ellarslie’s beautiful galleries represents the best that watercolor has to offer. This art and this gem of a place is so much more than “good art.” In this increasingly difficult world, the creation and experiencing of art provides a much-needed refuge. We are grateful to Ellarslie for continuing to provide a warm, welcoming space for artists and art lovers. GSWS wholeheartedly supports the Ellarslie’s ongoing commitment to the arts. By purchasing art during this Exhibit you will be supporting GSWS and Ellarslie’s worthy missions. Internationally known artist, James Toogood, has worked hard to choose the works for this exhibition and then select the best of the best to win our coveted awards. We thank James for his time and experience exemplified in his careful selection of these paintings and awards. GSWS is grateful to Joan Perkes, President of the Trenton City Museum, and the Ellarslie Board of Trustees for their continued interest and support for 2
our organization. Special thanks goes to Denise Cocchiaro, who co-chaired the exhibit with me. Her skills and enthusiasm has been invaluable. I would also like to thank the GSWS Board and Member volunteers for always stepping up and the Ellarslie staff and volunteers without whom this exhibit would not be possible. Please take note of those companies and individuals who donated awards. Their support is essential to exhibits such as this. As artists, we love our “job” and to be recognized for our work. Our sponsors and donors have our never ending gratitude. These works are all original water media pieces, traditional transparent watercolor as well as other water-based mediums. Study the works and see what our Garden State Watercolor artist’s creativity is expressed. Enjoy!

James Toogood
It has been an honor and a pleasure to act as juror for the Garden State Watercolor Society’s 49th Annual Juried Exhibition at the Trenton City Museum, Ellarslie. As juror for the exhibition I had the opportunity to view a wide range of aqueous artistic expression. The pieces selected for this exhibition reflect that range of expression. It is never a simple process. In making my selections I looked for creativity, mastery of the medium and an overall artistic aesthetic. I look for work that is engaging. From the work submitted those that were selected in my opinion did that best. Many of the works, especially the prize winners, had a little something extra. For me these artists managed to create a work of art that was greater than the sum of its parts. For those whose work was not selected this time, please do not be discouraged. Continue to work at your art. For those who were and especially the prize winners, congratulations! -James Toogood AWS/NWS/AAA Winter In New York | Watercolor | James Toogood | $6,000

Marge Chavooshian Garden State will sorely miss long-time member Marge Chavoosian. Marge was a plein air painter and was recognized for her street scenes, city and landscapes, as well as her drawings of people and places. She used light and form to create beautiful and meaningful visions of our world. A winner of numerous awards throughout her career, Marge taught many generations the joys and challenges of watercolor.
