STATEMENT
Lambda Pi Eta, the National Honor Society for Communication majors, recognizes, fosters and rewards outstanding achievement in communication studies. The Gamma Theta Chapter of Rider University welcomes its new senior members.
THE SIX GOALS OF L AMBDA PI ETA 1. Recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in Communication Studies 2. Stimulate interest in the field of Communication 3. ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Julie Veloz, Class of 2003
Julie Veloz has been in learning and development, diversity and inclusion, and organizational change for over 19 years. During that time, she has cultivated a culture of fearless disruption in the space. She brings to her work rock star status by being bottom-line focused, business literate and making training “sexy.” She has served as a learning leader in pharmaco, academia, retail, telecom, sales, marketing and advertising. Julie is currently at Interpublic Group, a global leader in modern marketing solutions. With over 50,400 diverse and talented individuals, Interpublic Group drives business results for clients around the world. She is a strategic partner to the business by creating work that affects the caliber of the workforce through thoughtfully produced solutions. She believes that learning is not a byproduct, but is an intrinsic part of the culture to any successful company. Julie prides herself on running an organization that is front and center by having a seat at the decision-making table and aligning it with the business objectives by using data and analytics. Julie’s leadership has not gone unnoticed by the industry. She has been awarded various accolades, been published in various magazines and journals such as Forbes, Adweek and AdAge, and has been on “Shark Tank” with Daymond John. She has also won IPG Mediabrands, a sought after recognition by Forbes Magazine for creating an inclusive workplace in 2019. Julie is a mom, a passionate diversity and inclusion leader, an avid writer and streamer, and is in a journey to find health and fitness. You can catch her playing Fortnite, COD and more with FearItself, SypherPK and other major streamers. Julie says gaming brings her Zen and a place to bond with her 13 year old teenager.

FACULTY TRIBUTE Dr. Myra Gutin
Myra Gutin received B.A. and M.A. degrees in Communication from Emerson College, Boston, MA. She earned a Ph.D. in the same discipline from the University of Michigan. Myra began her career in the Department of Communication and Journalism at Rider in January 1981 as an adjunct instructor. She was appointed to the full-time faculty in September 1985. Since that time, she has taught a variety of courses in the Department. Her favorite courses have been in the area of political communication: The Making of the President (which she has taught every four years since 1988 and will teach again during the fall 2020 semester), Political Communication and Campaign Persuasion. Myra’s interest in communication and politics came together in her work on American First Ladies. She is the author of The President’s Partner: The First Lady in the Twentieth Century (1989) and Barbara Bush: Presidential Matriarch (2008) Currently, she is at work on a biography of Betty Ford, due out in 2021. Myra has authored numerous articles, book chapters and essays on the topics of American first ladies, women in politics and political communication. She contributed two articles to Report to the First Lady 2001 and 2009, a study of the history and Office of the First Lady, which was presented to Laura Bush and Michelle Obama. A frequent media commentator, Myra has served as a special consultant to the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling first ladies exhibit during its sojourn at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. In January 2014, she spoke about former first lady Barbara Bush as part of C-SPAN’s American First Ladies series. Myra is a recipient of the Anne Giovanelli Award, given by Rider’s College of Continuing Studies for her work with and commitment to nontraditional students. She is also a recipient of Emerson College’s Distinguished Alumni Award. 5
