Cesare Perniola, founder of Studio XS, was born in Carrara (Tuscany, Italy) in 1977. Fond of technology and music, he started dealing with 3D programming learning essential and basic notions and then continued as a selftaught. Thanks to a versatile and multifaceted background, he creates something new with a different point of view, dealing with web design, illustration, lighting and photography, video and 3D motion.

INTERVIEW What kind of 3D visualization design work are you specialize in? For which industries will be useful especially now preparing for post-COVID19 restart? Considering the variety of my work as a graphic designer, I am mainly focused on 3D render and motion design, product visualization, digital covers and illustrations using lighting, texturing and realistic materials creation, sometimes matched with photogrammetry, colour grading and composing. I also deal with concept art, as I like to recreate what I imagine or feel trying to make it visible and arousing in those who observe the same that I feel by imagining it. In a post-covid-19 restart perspective, 3D design will be useful for courses that people can follow working remotely, but also it will give concrete help to research and to medicine itself, thanks to increasingly realistic simulations, AR and VR.
For digital covers, photo manipulation, do you see these services having a higher demands? What is the current trend in the multi-disciplinary design? Multi-Disciplinary Design combines how we perceive and see the world with methodology of observation, creation and planning. Designers become the hand that designs people needs and demands as well as the environment using an approach based on the creative process. 3D gives concrete form to concepts in a strategic way and define a new status quo. The commitment of multi-disciplinary artists is to create wonderful design solutions, and therefore also digital covers, photo manipulation going beyond pure function, conferring an aesthetic and emotional resonance on final users with a long-term perspective. Today we increasingly feel the need for ethical responsibility as global citizens. Limited resources in the human, material and environmental sectors are currently affecting also multi-disciplinary design.
How did you become a designer, what or who inspires you in the Art industry? I grew up during the transition from analogic to digital, with regard to both the audio and visual scene. I experienced multimedia through dance music videos and sci-fi movies, a great source of inspiration. In the first years of the new millennium, the general increasing curiosity for graphics led me dealing with 2D and programming, learning essential and basic notions and then I continued as self-taught. In recent years I have introduced 3D into my workflows, inspired by great artists like Mike Winkelmann - Beeple, David Brodeur LockedAndLoading, David Ariew - ArievVisuals, Eugene Golovanchuk - Skeeva, Paschou Constantin - The French Monkey or directors such as Ridley Scott and James Cameron.
What are your future plans in web, motion design & VFX and creative direction? My goal is to build a unique style and voice, have some kind of positive impact on the world and our community. I aim to invoke positive change through creativity and innovation, constantly improving and expressing myself. I would like to work in the entertainment industry, designing for feature films, as lead concept designer and illustrator.
