Iness Kaplun is a New York Pop Art artist. Iness works in mixed media, collage, using newspapers, magazines, comics, painting and drawing. Iness lives in New York City. Iness graduated from Saint-Petersburg University of Technology and Design with an Art degree. Currently she teaches Art and painting to children and adults in her art studio in addition to pursuing her own artistic career. Iness artwork has been exhibited at Chelsea galleries, The Bridgehampton Museum, MORA (Museum of Russian Art) and underground art shows. Iness artworks are in private collections in the US, UK, Germany, the Czech Republic, Russia and Italy.

INTERVIEW How would you describe your art style?
What media do you prefer?
For my Art style, I combine elements of Pop Art, bright colors, optimistic meaning and sensuality mixed together in my mixed media / collage. I primarily work with three bright colors: pink, blue/ turquoise and yellow. Blue is the color of happiness, Pink is the color of love, and Yellow represents positivity. I also use hearts and love words. Combining these colors together, with a positive message, sensuality and a touch of irony is what makes my art style. I create my collages filled with love and happiness because my desire is to deliver a positive message through my Art to the viewers. I believe that Art should bring happiness and love and provoke our imagination. I named my Art style is Feminine Pop Art.
I prefer to work in mixed media/ collage. I like working with texture and add meaning to my paintings. My mixed media based on collage made of newspaper, magazines, comics, books, photos and paint. The most enjoyable part in collage making is searching and collecting interesting pieces from different publications. For example the painting “Mona’s Secret” I made using French newspaper that I brought as a souvenir from Paris.
Where do you get your inspiration? I get inspired by everyday life. Traveling, meeting new people, visiting theatres and Broadway shows, watching movies and listening to the music, visiting galleries, art markets and museums, studying other painters’ artworks awakening my imagination, inspires me and gives me ideas for my paintings. Sleepless nights help me to create my painting in my head. I basically paint the whole painting in my imagination during one of these nights. Later in my studio, I materialize my thoughts and feelings; I reflect my dream on a canvas. The magic of creating a painting is to pass on my inspiration to the viewers and maybe even inspire them.

How do you pick a subject / theme for your paintings? My life and surroundings helps me to pick a subject for my paintings. The theme which I use in my artworks is based on the reality in an ironic interpretation. I also admire female body; I think it is a perfect artistic form and is an endless inspiration for any artist. Female body, lips and heels are commonly reflected in my art.
