The British Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement—the world’s largest humanitarian network. It is a volunteer-led organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. In the UK, it has around 3,000 members of staff and a network of almost 30,000 volunteers. They respond immediately to emergencies both at home and overseas—from fires and floods in the UK to earthquakes and conflicts around the world. They try to help people involved in crisis situations. In the last year, they have responded to many emergencies and disasters, such as the devastating floods in Pakistan, and most recently the crisis facing 10 million people in East Africa after the worst drought there for 60 years. In Pakistan the Red Cross has provided emergency relief, including food, shelter, clean water, cooking equipment and aid resources to more than two million people. Here in the UK, there are trained volunteers to help people with the consequences of disasters that rarely make the news—for example, with care after a house fire or traffic accident, or when adapting to life back at home after a serious illness or a long stay in hospital. In order to deliver this life-saving work, the British Red Cross relies on raising funds from a variety of sources, with more than half its income coming from donations from individuals. The recent economic recession has seen a drop in crucially needed donations to charity shops, which is why it will welcome anything that people might like to give.
