2019 ON THE HILL SUMMIT
NATIONAL PRESIDENT DANIELLE BROWN Dear Mothers and Teens,
O
n behalf of the National Executive Board, I am pleased to welcome you to the 7th Biennial National Legislative ‘On the Hill’ Summit! Since its inception, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., has been committed to legislation aimed at bettering the lives of all children. Over the years, the organization’s advocacy efforts have zeroed in on a variety of topics critical to our communities. The On the Hill Summit underscores that commitment by providing our youth with valuable knowledge on critical issues, as well as an understanding of the commitment and skills necessary for active citizenship. Over four days, attendees will be briefed on pertinent issues — equity in education, gun violence safety and prevention, and voter registration and turnout — and attend workshops on how to take what they have learned and use it in their local communities. They will also have the opportunity to meet with their congressional leaders on Capitol Hill and discuss issues and concerns that are affecting their peers and communities. It’s important that we involve our youth in the political process, including elections, legislative advocacy, and other important civic duties. We aim to build what one great newsman referred to as a ‘great reforming generation’ … one that marries the aspirations of service to the possibilities of politics and harnesses the good work done in local communities to transform a nation.
I am grateful to the National Legislative Committee — under the leadership of National Chair Ericka Gibson, from the Mid-Atlantic Region, and under the guidance of National Corresponding Secretary Connie GuilloryAdams — who expertly organized this year’s event. Their work demonstrates that Jack and Jill of America, Inc., is a viable African American organization that brings substantive and legitimate issues to congressional leaders for their review and consideration. Yours in Jack and Jill service, Danielle Brown 26th National President

ABOUT THE ON THE HILL SUMMIT The On the Hill Legislative Summit is Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated’s National Legislative Event. Our goal is to demonstrate that Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated is a viable African-American organization that brings substantive and legitimate issues to Congressional leaders for their review and consideration. Our teens, mothers and fathers will advocate as a unified voice on children’s issues, attend legislative workshops, host town hall meetings, engage panelists, and meet with elected officials. Our legislative summit is not the typical “meet and great” event! The summit enables and empowers youth to take-action, as advocates, for their peers and communities. The young advocates, first, complete some preconference work in preparation for the Capitol Hill visits.

They are briefed on the latest proposals under consideration by the Administration and Congress. The young advocates then work in collaborative state teams to craft messages and stories that will resonate with the policymakers. More importantly, the advocates will walk the halls of Congress, meeting with his or her respective Senators and Representatives. This is their opportunity to transform society and themselves, consciously and collectively using their expert power, their voting power, and their people power to move us visibly towards a world that works for all. The summit is a fast-paced, action-oriented experience that will leave the advocates knowing that they can make a difference!
