MUSEUM STAIR Northeastern University ARCH 1110 Fundamental Architectural Representation Fall 2013
During our representation studio, we were asked to analyze two paintings: The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit by John Singer Sargent and Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin by Rogier van der Weyden. From that analysis, we were to design a museum exhibition set to include only these paintings and a series of stairs. As a result, I aimed to create a sequence of experiences that brought visitors through moments of darkness with long, horizontal slits in the ceiling acting as the sole source of light that would lead visitors to the more illuminated spaces containing the paintings. This provided visitors with highly choreographed moments of contemplation between works of art.

FREE PLAN RESIDENCE Northeastern University ARCH 1120 Fundamental Architectural Design Strategies of Design Spring 2014
For our first residential project, students were to draw inspiration from famous free-plan residences by Mies van der Rohe, Le Cobusier, and many more architects to design a single bedroom home. This design features two large pillars acting as the primary structural supports, holding a singular roof and floor plane. In the center of these planes stands a service core that houses storage, utilities, and the kitchen. The result is an open floor plan and free faรงade to allow interaction with the local environment.

DUAL RESIDENCE Northeastern University ARCH 1120 Fundamental Architectural Design Contingencies of Design Spring 2014
Our final assignment for our first year design studio was a dual residence on a single lot within a larger neighborhood. Each student was assigned a plot of land within the neighborhood. The neighborhood drastically slopes down from north to south. My plot, located at the highest point in the neighborhood, has a changing elevation of 21’. The design that followed took inspiration from the natural topography and aimed to emphasize the unique site. The east structure protrudes from the landscape, while the west structure recedes into it to create a dynamic relationship between the two, while maintaining privacy.

The aperture treatment of this dual residence features floor-to-ceiling glazing running north to south, and punched openings running east to west. This combination connected the residences to the cascading landscape through glazing while the punched openings ensured that privacy was not compromised.

CHINATOWN LIBRARY
Northeastern University ARCH 2110 Site, Space, and Program Fall 2014
The concept of this library revolved around a highly choreographed circulation path. The library features three stories connected by one staircase. In order to get to each room, visitors must cross through the atrium using these stairs that then shape the programmatic organization of the furniture within. Essentially slicing through the program, these circulatory paths are then reflected on the faรงade. The back wall houses all service program, including bathrooms, offices, and elevators, to ensure a larger, uninterrupted library experience.

CHINATOWN FITNESS CENTER Northeastern University ARCH 2110 Site, Space, and Program Fall 2014
Developed around the standard dimensions of swimming pools, this indoor recreation facility features rectilinear pools wrapped in the remaining programming housed in a curvilinear form. Above the pools, each roof would include a public garden space for outdoor workouts and yoga. Anchoring this form to the pools, a long staircase connects a series of “trays” that create an entirely open interior space that would house all fitness equipment and public areas, including a café and multi-purpose space. Below these trays are more personal programmatic elements, such as offices, bathrooms, and locker rooms.

While the pools would feature primarily glazing to fill the rooms with natural light, the façade of the curvilinear form would be composed of a series of 3’ panels. On the internal façade, the primary staircase would be paired with a continuous series of windows to connect visitors to the exterior garden spaces. The external façade acts as a buffer between the fitness center and neighboring Massachusetts Turnpike and only includes a series of punched openings to allow light inward while limiting views out.
