May 2 l 7:00pm l $10/adults l $20/residents l FREE/students Join us for a new kind of combo! A Taste of Jazz at Bailey Contemporary Arts features entertaining and educational encounters with the musical genre, accompanied by wine tastings. Where in the World is Jazz? – Where did jazz originate and how did it get to what it is today? Join Martin Hand and the Gold Coast Jazz Trio as they explore the origins of the music of jazz, how it moved throughout America and became the music it is today.

ARBOREAL EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION

May 3 l 6 - 10:00pm l FREE Curated by Sharon Lee Hart and featuring the artists: Carol Prusa, elin O’hara Slavick, Ivan Santiago, Izel Vargas, Kate Hawkes, Maria Britton, Mario Marzan, Mike Dillow, Nick Gilmore, Roberto Navarrete, Roger Boulay, Sammi McLean, Susanne Slavick, Sharon Lee Hart and William Cordova. From preserved, pristine cherry blossoms encased in ice to scarred, yet tenacious atomic bomb witnesses in Hiroshima, trees and their parts continually school us on the process of growth, decay, and resilience. While grandiose trees easily catch our eye, this exhibition explores their humble comrades and unexpected interpretations of the arboreal.

LIFE DRAWING STUDIO

May 4 & 18 l 11am - 2pm l 18 & Up l $20/adults l $10/students Live models pose draped for short “gesture” and longer poses during this program for individuals interested in portrait painting, character design illustration, animation and anatomical drawing.

WASHI PAPER DYEING

May 11 | 11 am - 1:00pm | $51/resident | $60/includes supplies Explore a traditional Japanese paper (washi) dyeing technique with materials from the Awagami Factory in Tokushima, Japan. In this beginner-friendly experience, students will dye their own paper and create a custom Japanese Stab book. This class will be instructed by Shawna Moulton, an artist who has traveled to Japan to learn these techniques.

CONCEPT TO CREATION WORKSHOP

May 14, 18 l 6 – 8pm l $30/session Artist in Residence Andrea Huffman assists artists in tapping deeply into their creativity. Are you creative but not sure where to start, or intimidated by the blank canvas? Each week creative exercises provide means to discover your unique artistic style, personal symbols, and imagery. Participants will work in a sketchbook along with other media of the student’s choosing. This class is geared toward artists of all levels, working in any medium. All supplies are included.

ARTIST TALK: AN ABBREVIATED HISTORY

Told by the Dade County Pine, with Nick Gilmore May 16 | 7:00pm | FREE Organized in conjunction with ARBOREAL exhibition, participating artist Nick Gilmore will give a presentation on the history and the cultural, ecological, and creative relevance of the South Florida slash pine, commonly known as “Dade County Pine.” This legendary native tree was a key construction material in Miami’s industrial boom of the early 20 th century, when it was harvested to near extinction.

BLACK AND WHITE CHARCOAL DRAWING

May 18 | 11 am - 3:00pm | $34/residents | $40/non-residents Explore the rich tonal and expressive possibilities of Black & White Charcoal. Learn about the various types of charcoal and how to create a delicate range of values on toned drawing papers. The techniques of drawing with black & white charcoal together will be explored. Basic drawing experience recommended. All supplies are included.
