Temporary Housing for Formerly Homeless Women Fall 2018 - Professor: Matthew Celmer In collaboration with: Vasundhra Aggarwal Mott Haven, Bronx, NYC
In this project we were tasked with designing housing for formerly homeless individuals, we decided to focus on homeless women. The homeless women experience is different than the homeless males. Starting with the close focus on appearance, with the idea of visibility, and how it is so vital to the human experience to blend in with society. It is three times more expensive for a woman to buy the products and services that allow her to blend in and become invisible, than it is a male. Homeless women are thought of as vulnerable, making them a target, with 92% of homeless women reporting being physically and/or sexually abused in their lifetime. The design interprets this - and through architecture attempts to promote the empowerment of the women. The grid is used to reflect the public and utilitarian lifestyle of the women, whereas the movable panel system represents the personal re-appropriation of space. The living space avoids the use of double loaded corridors, to prevent the creation of alleyways and unsafe spaces, but, also, still prioritizes privacy in the bedroom. The bubble provides mixed use support programs, and acts as a manifestation of a safe zone, not to shelter the residents but rather provide them the tools to become self sustaining individuals. NESTLING CONNECTIONS Bridging to Create Topological Continuities Fall 2017 - Professor: Ivan Bernal Lincoln Rd, Miami Tasked with designing a graft and bridge on Lincoln Road, the design gives a visual and physical connection between Soundscape Park and Lincoln Road. The building is made up of two completely separate objects that nest together cohesively. Creating a topological continuity in the skin that deviates to create the interior spaces. With my time at: One Development and Construction LLC This project is a 864 sq ft addition. The client wanted to straighten the back half of the house and add a contrast in the rear facade that emphasized the color of the original part of the house, as well as giving the facade a more modern look. The project uses corrugated steel paneling on the addition, and is completely reworked in the interior. My design was chosen, over a number of entries, because of my ability to communicate with the clients and for my skill to convey the design through 3D modeling and renders Revit
