EL BARRIO Where Community Becomes Home Spanish Harlem, NYC - Spring 2020 Professor Marcos Parga - In collaboration with: Stephanie Michell

NEW YORK CITY has become a place where many have come from all over the world to immerse themselves in the cultural richness that reminds them of home. For Hispanic Americans especially, there is an influx of people that leave their homes due to the disparity they faced in their home countries. Spanish Harlem, has become a reverent place where families share in proud beginnings for the search of an American Dream. The project aims to revere the culture of the surrounding Hispanic community in the efforts to bring the idea of home alive. El Barrio aspires to find the thread that binds. Often many are brought together by the common duality that their Hispanic heritages share but also, many find themselves connected by their new American identities after leaving their countries. This co-sharing housing project for immigrants aims to bring a new sense of home to those that had to leave it behind. The rooms of the project then become redefined by the new tenants , using the workshop for the residents to create pieces that represent their homeland. As the rooms and tenants change, each room becomes a collage of the past and present tenants. The building will become a place where the user can use architecture and space to define their identity. The Facade The shared theme of duality between the tenants of El Barrio, with things like citizenship and language is something that makes the tenants of El Barrio unique. By collaging these different facade styles, one starts to envision how these common thread can use architecture to represent the two identities that are now found within each immigrant. The facade does this by collaging both traditional Hispanic facades with typical New York facade, the intention of this being to bring a sense of belonging to those that feel displaced in their new homes. Ultimately rethinking how does this new duality and identity look when interpreted .through architecture

CAN YOU SEE ME? Temporary Housing for Formerly Homeless Women Mott Haven, Bronx, NYC - Fall 2018 Professor Matthew Celmer - In collaboration with: Vasundhra Aggarwal

In this project we were tasked with designing housing for formerly homeless individuals, we decided to focus on homeless women. The homeless women experience is different than the homeless males. Starting with the close focus on appearance, with the idea of visibility, and how it is so vital to the human experience to blend in with society. It is three times more expensive for a woman to buy the products and services that allow her to blend in and become invisible, than it is a male. Homeless women are thought of as vulnerable, making them a target, with 92% of homeless women reporting being physically and/or sexually abused in their lifetime. The design interprets this - and through architecture attempts to promote the empowerment of the women. The grid is used to reflect the public and utilitarian lifestyle of the women, whereas the movable panel system represents the personal re-appropriation of space. The living space avoids the use of double loaded corridors, to prevent the creation of alleyways and unsafe spaces, but, also, still prioritizes privacy in the bedroom. The bubble provides mixed use support programs, and acts as a manifestation of a safe zone, not to shelter the residents but rather provide them the tools to become self sustaining individuals. HIDE AND SEEK A Library for Le Murate Le Murate, Florence, Italy - Fall 2019 Professor: David Shanks In collaboration with: Angela Murano and Greg Winawer

Florence is a city where the streets have grown organically overtime and it has never been replanned, like most other European cities. Because of this special condition many use landmarks, like the Duomo as a marker, often seeing the landmark in the horizon and then losing it and finding it again. Taking inspiration from this idea of hide and seek, we identified the points we would want the library to be seen from, and carved out of the building using the human range of vision from those points. As you approach the complex, the center building appears and disappears behind the exterior buildings, and only when you enter the complex are you able to get a full view of the entire building. The hide and seek then changes scales within the complex as the perforation patterns and carves of the building work together to reveal and hide the different programs each building contains. Once he user enters the building the idea of hide and seek continues as the user has a direct visual connection to the different programs but not a direct route forcing you to wander through the building to find your destination. BUILT PROJECT Addition Summer 2018 - Winter 2018 With my time at: One Development and Construction LLC

This project is a 864 square foot addition. The client wanted to straighten the back half of the house and add a contrast in the rear facade that emphasized the color of the original part of the house, as well as giving the facade a more modern look. The project uses corrugated steel paneling on the addition, and is completely reworked in the interior. My design was chosen, over a number of entries, because of my ability to communicate with the clients and for my skill to convey the design through 3D modeling and renders Revit
