Softball looks to get back to state championships The Lowry High School (LHS) softball squad has been close for the last couple of seasons, but they haven’t quite gotten over the hump to win the state title again. LHS softball coach Austin Mayo commented on the process of starting the upcoming season. “It is always a hard thing every year when we have to make cuts. We see these girls come out and they are committed, but the bottom line is that softball is a cut sport; you gotta make those tough decisions. You don’t like to do it, but it is a blessing and a curse

because you have girls interested; I’m very happy to have people wanting to play, but at the same time it is always hard to tell somebody that they can’t be on the team.” The girls finished with a 26-10 overall record last year and they were 23-9 the season before that, with both seasons putting them just short of their overall goal of a state title. “We have a young group this year with six new faces and seven returners,” Mayo said. “Sydney (Connors) and Sierra (Maestrejuan) are still playing basketball, so they won’t be able

t o p l a y for us until that is done. We had some unique issues this year so we kept 13 and I am pretty excited about that.” The Lady Bucks start their season on the road March 7-9 at

the Elk Grove Tournament in Sacramento, Calif. They go to Spring Creek on March 15-16, and then move on to North Valleys for games on March 22-23. Fernley comes for the first game at Lowry on March 28, before the Lady Bucks move on to Sparks for the Reed Tournament on March 29-30. LHS senior Madison McClellan commented, “I have been playing softball all of my life, my family is all about softball. I played JV my freshman year, but I have been on the varsity team for three years. I played third base when I was little and then I switched to first. When I got to Lowry I switched back to third and I fell in love with it. I like the atmosphere most about softball; it is a lot of fun being out here with my favorite people playing my favorite game. My favorite part of the game is cheering on my teammates from the dugout.” McClellan concluded, “Our team is really young, but I have a feeling that it is a special year; we have the potential to go all the way.” Lowry will go to Dayton on April 5-6, before returning home to take on South Tahoe April 12-13 and Churchill County (Fallon) on April 16. “I expect my returning seniors Sydney, Macey (Katzenmeyer), and Madi (McClellan) to step up as leaders this year,” Mayo said. “Madi is a returning captain and has played a solid third base for us for a couple of years now, and

Sydney will be a four-time varsity player.” The Northern 3A Regional Championships will be held in Elko on May 9-11, with the top six teams qualifying for a double-elimination series based on regular-season standings. The NIAA 3A State Championship will match up the top two teams from the North and South Regionals. “I expect us to be competing for one of the top seeds in the North and go on to state to compete for the State Championship" Mayo said. "There is no reason for us to fall off. We took a hard loss in the championship game last year, and we lost quite a bit of talent from that team, but we have a couple of younger girls replacing them, and I think with what we have coming up from the JV, there is absolutely no reason for us not to be in the same position that we have been in years past.”

Swimmers hit the pool looking to take on the Northern 3A competition The Lowry High School swim team is trying to develop young talent this season and make a run at the rest of the league. Evan Jeppsen will be the only Buckaroo senior on a 12-swimmer squad this year. “We have got a really strong team coming back. We had two individuals and a relay or two from the men’s team make state last year, and all but one of those boys is back,” LHS coach Shelby Ruff said. “We should have a pretty strong showing from the boys. Charles Gonin is a real strong swimmer. He is going to be a powerful force on our team as a freshman this year, and hopefully going forward through his high school career.” In Nevada, swimming is a co-ed sport, but they will compete separately, similar to the way that track does. Lowry does not field a JV team and the men’s and women’s teams travel and compete together. “We will swim just about every Saturday until the end of May,” Ruff said. “We have a couple of Fridays, but mostly Saturdays. They are all oneday meets until we go to regionals, where they have a preliminary one day and then finals the next. That is in Carson this year for us. We will do individual events and when we have enough people we will do relays.” The Buckaroos start the season at South Tahoe on March 9 and move on to Incline for a March 16 meet. On March 23 Lowry travels to Truckee, and Carson will host the Bucks on April 6. “We have some strong girls also,

but our numbers are just real low, so we are going to be looking good for individual results, but it is going to be hard to score points as a team based on our size of the team.” Lowry continues the season against North Valleys at Douglas Swimming Pool on April 20, before going back to Carson to take on Churchill County (Fallon) on April 26. The regular season ends for the Bucks on May 3 in Reno against Sparks and North Tahoe. L H S j u n i o r A b b e e Grieve is swimming f o r t h e

thought I would give it a try. I know how to swim, but I have never swum on a team before. I have only been doing freestyle so far, but I like the backstroke, too. It is easier because you can keep your head up out of the water and not miss a lot of breaths. I like being a part of a team and getting the exercise. My expectations for this season are to be in better shape and better at swimming by the end of the year; if I like it this year I think I am going to do it again next year. I am looking forward to being closer t o

mates. I go to school with all of these people, but I don’t really know them personally so it will be nice to get to know them.” The Northern 3A Regional Championships will be held in Carson City on May 10-11. Each team may enter

a maximum of one relay team per relay event. Individual competitors must meet their respective region’s time standard for a particular event in order to qualify for this meet. “This will be my second year on the Lowry swim team,” said Ashton Kalkoske, LHS sophomore. “Swimming gives me something to do and gets me out of the house so I am not bored. I like long-distance swimming so I do the 500 freestyle mostly. I am a big man and I should be built for sprints, but I am able to do longdistance because I have stamina. I am expecting our team to be really good this year. We have a few new freshmen that look good and a couple of other people that have decided to swim that I think will do well. This year I am hoping to drop my time even more in the 500.” The NIAA 3A State Championships will be held on May 18 in Carson City and will feature the top performers from the regional meets in the North and South. “This is my third year coaching the Lowry team,” Ruff said. “As a coach I am looking to develop them as all-around athletes. A lot of times we have people come in with no experience or with experience with just one stroke. What we are looking to do is tweak those kids who are a little bit more well-rounded to make them stronger athletes and take a look at some of the ones who are newer to the sport and sort of figure out where their niche is for the team or for themselves; figure out what they are going to be good at.”

Track and field team looks to improve with a mix of new and old talent The Lowry track squad is sporting a large team this year with some returning talent and some new kids that are looking to do good things. The Buckaroos start their season on March 16 at Spring Creek, before traveling to the 47th annual Fallon Elks Invitational on March 23. The Pershing County Invitational will also be held on March 23. The Reed/ Sparks Rotary Invitational will be held on March 29-30, as will the Battle Mountain Track Meet. On April 6 the Elko Kiwanis Invitational will be held, and on April 12 Lowry will travel to the Fernley Invitational. “Twenty to 25 kids showed up for the open gyms, and we expect that number to jump up pretty good on Monday when we start practicing,” said LHS coach Grant Beatty. “It usually starts out pretty big and the kids kind of weed themselves out with grade checks and all that stuff. We usually start off with a pretty big number and it finds a way of trimming itself down, but we keep everybody if they qualify. This will be my third year coaching track at Lowry. I have a good coaching staff and I feel like we are going in the right direction. Last year the girls won the first state championship in Lowry school history so we are happy with that, but we lost a lot of those senior girls. We are hoping to reload and keep it rolling. We lost a lot from last year on both sides, so we definitely have some open spots, some opportunities to be filled.” The Lowry girls won the team 3A NIAA State Championship last year with 72 points over Tahoe-Truckee (63) and Sunrise Mountain (58). It was the first state title in program history for the girls track and field team. “We have senior Becca (Kuskie) coming back,” Beatty said. “She is a
