Nevada’s Mining Industry Can Help Turn the Silver State Green By Tyre Gray, Esq. President of the Nevada Mining Association

Nevada mining has produced minerals and materials that we use every day for more than 150 years. The 20-plus minerals that are mined in the state can be found in thousands of items including electronic devices, methods of transportation and more. These materials help provide the means for society to innovate and improve. The mining industry has remained a consistent bright spot that creates opportunities for our communities statewide. This includes Nevada mining being at the forefront of our renewable future, supporting the continued emergence of our Silver State as America’s green energy capital. The United States has recently been forced to reevaluate its current energy dependence on adversarial nations, with a renewed emphasis on a domestic transition towards renewable sources. If the country is serious about energy independence, it must commit to the development of a national supply chain, starting with the building block of everything we use: minerals. That goal can be achieved by turning to Nevada and its modern mining industry. Whenever green energy is discussed, conversations quickly turn towards lithium. This mineral – which powers smartphones, laptops, and tablets – will be instrumental in the production of electric vehicle batteries. Last year, President Biden set an ambitious goal for 50% of all U.S. auto sales to be electric by 2030. In 2021, that number was only 4%. As electric vehicle demand increases,

estimates suggest that lithium production will need to quadruple 2021 output. The answer to America’s lithium gap can be found in Nevada. The state is currently home to the country’s only operating lithium mine, which represents around 1% of global production. While that number is small, deposits are being discovered across the state, with just under 15,000 active claims. Projects like the Thacker Pass Mine, located in northern Humboldt County, is just one of a number of operations nearing shovel readiness that can turn Nevada into one of the world’s leading lithium producers. While lithium will be a major part of the transition to renewables, demand for other Nevada minerals will be critical as well. For example, copper will be needed for the production of solar panels, wind

turbines, and electric vehicles. Silver and gold will also be necessary for assisting in sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions. Anti-mining advocates will argue two things: that mining cannot be done in an environmentally sustainable way and that expediting projects will not allow time for proper review. The reality is that no one mines better than we do in Nevada. The state is consistently regarded as one of the world’s best mining jurisdictions because it is highly regulated, both at the state and federal level. Before a shovel breaks ground, operations are required to submit post-closure reclamation plans and payment to the state of Nevada. Currently, the state possesses nearly $3.4 billion dollars in reclamation bonds. During operation, mines monitor air, water, and soil over 100 times per day, with measurements required to meet government-set standards. Steps are also taken to protect local ecosystems, vegetation, water, and wildlife. In short, if a Nevada operation cannot mine the right way, they will not be able to remain open, nor should they. Nevada’s modern day mining industry has the capabilities and reclamation procedures in place to aide in the transition to renewable energy and to be part of the solution to our current energy crisis. The time is now to push for energy independence and make Nevada America’s green energy capitol, creating a better future for not only Nevadans, but also Americans across the country.

New Nevada Gold Mines solar power plant advances Barrick’s Clean Energy Drive Elko — Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) is investing in a 200-megawatt (MW) solar power plant designed to accelerate its decarbonization program in line with the Barrick Gold Corporation’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Roadmap. NGM is majority owned and operated by Barrick. NGM announced April 13, 2022 they are partnering with First Solar to manufacture all modules required to support the 200MW construction, entirely in the United States. NGM has commenced detailed engineering and expects to begin construction in the third quarter of 2022. The modules supplied by First Solar are expected to be delivered in the beginning of the second quarter of 2023 and will power both phases of the power plant. Ensuring that the selected contract partner for this project fully supported NGM’s values was a top priority for the company. NGM chose to contract with a supplier who is committed to fair labor practices,

investing in American manufacturing and American job, and is one which will deliver high performance solar panels with the lowest carbon footprint and

Although this process has been time-consuming, it has allowed the company to optimize the project schedule to commission both phase I and phase II by early 2024. NGM has committed to a 20% carbon reduction by 2025. This will be achieved through the 200MW solar array construction and the conversion of NGM’s coal fired power plant to cleaner burning natural gas. “The project is the latest in a series of carbon-reducing initiatives across the group’s global operation,” says Barrick group

sustainability executive Grant Beringer. “The solar power plant will complement the transition of NGM’s coal power plant to a dual fuel process, which will enable it to generate electricity from natural gas, reducing carbon emissions by as much as 50 percent.” NGM has a strong focus on environmental management practices and is a committed custodian of the unique lands, waters, flora, and fauna within the state of Nevada. Barrick is targeting an overall 30 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 against its 2018 baseline with the goal of achieving net-zero by 2050.

Casey Barton is known as a business owner, family man and rodeo athlete. Casey was born and raised in Elko, Nevada and recently moved back in the area to raise a family of his own. Casey and wife, Shelby, have been life partners since high school. Together they have two sons, Bryton and Cashton, and another baby on the way. The Barton family lives a conservative lifestyle that keeps them very busy. They own 10 acres that they utilize by breeding, raising butchering beef and swine, breeding and milking goats, and a large garden to rely on to grow and preserve all of their

own food. The boys also have chickens and sell the eggs to save money for their own hobbies. Riding horses and spending time outdoors is something that brings this family closer together. Direct Force Maintenance (DFM) has been in operation since 2012. The company originally started for a smaller pur-

pose of providing labor services to the mining industry. Casey started as a laborer mechanic with the company when it was first established. In the past 10 years, DFM has expanded its services to provide start to finish project completion at the mines. The company has traveled to Utah, Arizona and all over Nevada providing top quality

services and has grown to having 12-15 employees on call. In the past 10 years Casey states that “I have also grown and learned an incredible amount which is why in 2017 I started buying into the company”. In 2020, Casey became the owner of Direct Force Maintenance. Casey’s goal since becoming owner has been to provide for more families aside from the mine. He encourages DFM employees to chase their dreams as well. “I strive everyday to be a leader for the employees of Direct Force. I have taken a different approach than most in this business which is promoting family and ensuring my employees are appreciated and cared for,” Casey expressed. Direct Force Maintenance is always hiring. Casey shared, “If I feel that the person is the right fit, I will never turn someone away who is motivated to work, strives to learn and has a great attitude.” Many of the people hired by Direct Force Maintenance start by knowing very little about the mining industry to become lead men, who then teach others who are just beginning. “We are such a strong team because we have some very dedicated employees that have been with the company for many years and several others who are in it for long term commitment,’’ said Casey. Direct Force Maintenance completes some extremely dirty, hard and trying

jobs. As an owner Casey would rather turn down a job than overwork his employees and risk their safety or more time away from their loved ones. For many years Casey had to put rodeo, hunting and some of his other beloved hobbies to the side to build up the company. “I was on the road for several years living out of hotel rooms and having a couple of days off a month. I did this to provide for my family in the best way I knew how and it paid off in the long run.” One of the changes Casey was able to incorporate since becoming an owner is that employees are able to come home to their families most nights and aren’t living on the road. “I can thank my wonderful team for that and the relationships we have built with all of the local mines that keep us busy,” says Casey. One of the biggest challenges for Casey since becoming an owner has been separating work from home. “It can be difficult some days to be present at home and keep up with our busy lifestyle. I am lucky to say I married the most understanding, energetic woman who keeps our family afloat most days. She has sacrificed so much for my dreams”. About a year ago Casey started getting involved with rodeo again, competing at the local team ropings and traveling to nearby states. “I was raised on a horse and I feel

complete when I make it a priority in my life. My boys have been raised similarly to myself and we spend most of the summer weekends traveling to junior rodeos. There is nothing better than watching my boys compete and start making goals for their future as well.” Casey could only hope one day that his children will want to be involved with the company too. One of the quotes Casey tries to live by is, “If you want to live like no one else, then you have to live like no one else.” Casey has spent several years missing various holiday gatherings, special events and feeling disconnected from friends and family. Success doesn’t happen overnight and you have to work for it. There are no hand outs, easy paths to take or instant gratifications that come with building a business. Casey chose at 18 not to attend college which people thought he would later regret down the road. Casey was a straight A student all throughout school and was always considered a “good student.” Casey shared, “I want people to know you don’t need a degree to be successful. I own an accomplished, secured a business at 30 years old and my dreams aren’t stopping there. Whatever you choose to do in life, do it 100%. If you want to flip burgers, make the best burgers ever. You want to go rodeo, win the national finals. Nothing should be stopping

you from being the best version of yourself. Figure out your best skills and qualities, find a profession that only makes you a better person and help others do the same and you will have a very fulfilling life.” Some of Casey’s proudest moments as owner is whenever he is able to support a small business or give back for a good cause. Direct Force has been able to support many fundraisers and auction benefits, endorse several rodeo associations like Steele Productions, BB Bulls, Winnemucca Bronc Bash, Caleb Hendrix on his professional rodeo journey, countless junior rodeos along with the Winnemucca and Elko County FFA and 4H clubs. DFM are also big supporters of Winnemucca and Elko little league baseball and the Ruby Mountain Clay Breakers shooting team. DFM also uses local small businesses for all of their merchandise including hats, shirts or other Direct Force Maintenance apparel. “Giving back to various local organizations is such an incredible feeling and only makes our connections stronger in the community,” stated Casey. The Barton family has become an icon for inspiration in Northern Nevada. Both young boys, Bryton and Cashton, are kind and humble rodeo competitors. Shelby Barton, Casey’s wife, also utilizes her Social Worker degree to give back to Nevada communities.

Mr. Radford brings over 35 years of technical and operations experience in the mining industry. He has received a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from the University of Idaho and an MBA from the University of Alaska. Radford’s career, he has managed the second-largest open pit operation in the USA, the deepest underground mine in the USA and the largest gold mill in the world. Laura Chavez – IT Technician Laura Chavez is our IT Technician and has been at Marigold for almost 1 year. Laura has a very diverse background including working as an Industrial Hygiene Technician for 4 years, working as an IT Technician at Newmont Mining (Twin Creeks Mine) for 3 years, at Xerox for 6 years and also has 9 years of experience working as a graphic designer. Laura has 3 Associate Degrees from Great Basin College including Diesel Technology, Graphic Communication, and Electrical Technology. Laura’s diverse background has allowed her to no only fulfill her duties as an IT Technician but she has also been able to help other departments do a variety of things including creating a design for hats and work with the Mobil Maintenance Electrical Department on Haul Truck Planned Maintenance. Laura is a great supported of many events at Marigold including “Pinktober” where employees wear pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness. Laura enjoys home projects and is currently remodeling her parent’s kitchen. She loves yard work, hiking, camping, and watching Netflix. She enjoys spending time with her family including her 2-year-old nephew that she loves to spoil.

Previously, Kelsey was the Process Operations Superintendent at Nevada Gold Mines (Twin Creeks Mine) and was there for almost 11 years. She has held many different positions in her career including Metallurgist, Full Potential Coordinator and Process Operations General Foreman. Kelsey has 3 Bachelor of Science Degrees including Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science Engineering and Music Performance. In 2019, Kelsey received the Safety Award for General Supervisor from the Nevada Mining Association. Since joining Marigold, Kelsey is most proud of the HVAC ventilation system upgrade to the refinery, which is providing better working conditions for the refiners. Kelsey married her high school sweetheart, Joe, and they have been together for 22 years and have 2 beautiful children. Kelsey loves to craft including quilting, gardening, and scrapbooking. Lithium is key to the charging capabilities found in cell phones, tablets and other electronic devices as part of lithium batteries. On a larger scale, these batteries are used in electric vehicles or battery

energy storage systems that can turn energy from renewable sources into reliable and secure electricity for our power grid. As governments and corporations seek new ways to reduce carbon emissions, the demand for lithium batteries is increasing at a rapid pace. Almost every major car manufacturer has announced new and meaningful targets alongside substantial investments in electrifying their fleets, while EV purchases across the coun-

try increased 60 percent in the first quarter of this year. Unfortunately, lithium supply is having trouble keeping up. The world currently produces about 500,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent per year, and by 2030, demand is set to top 2 million tons. Even more worrying is that the U.S. only makes up 1% of global lithium production, rendering the U.S. completely dependent on foreign supply. This is where Northern

Nevada comes in. At Thacker Pass, Lithium Americas is hard at work developing the large lithium deposit in North America so that we can supply the materials that allow electric vehicles to run and for renewable energy to be stored in our electric grid – all in a manner that relies on American jobs, invests in local communities, and respects the land around us. Thacker Pass is located along State Route 293 in Hum-

boldt County, Nevada and has received key environmental permits required for construction to begin, including a Record of Decision by the Bureau of Land Management in January 2021, that followed a government-led Environmental Impact Statement. Once fully scaled, we aim to bring up to 80,000 tons of battery quality lithium carbonate equivalent per year into the domestic market, which is enough lithium for at least one million electric vehicles per year. We have always sought to do things the right way. This is why we spent over a decade collecting data and invested millions of dollars in developing comprehensive plans to responsibly manage our environmental impact and minimize our footprint. It’s why we have invested in water recycling systems to reuse as much process water as possible—water converted from existing alfalfa irrigation to lithium processing. When it comes to doing things the right way, we also know how important it is to collaborate so that the success of this project translates to our neighbors as well. We are regularly engaging with the community through open houses, tribal outreach, and a variety of other communications channels where we can better understand local priorities and concerns. As an example of the productive partnership we seek to foster, we recently completed pre-construction cultural work onsite with the support of local Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone tribal members to preserve any historical artifacts in the area such as obsidian tools. So what does our Thacker Pass project mean for the region? The project currently employs 46 employees and has

supplier. When it comes to community investment, the project is forecast to inject on average $145 million in tax revenues per year to local economies over more than 40 years. We are also committed to building a new K-8 school in Orovada and a preschool facility at Ft. McDermitt, and we will make critical safety improvements to the U.S. 95/State Route 293 interchange in Orovada. While construction on the mine itself isn’t expected to

take place until next year, we recently opened the new 30,000 square foot Lithium Technical Development Center in Reno to serve as a hub for lithium industry research and developments – hopefully adding to the region’s growing reputation as a center of innovation for the technologies that will power tomorrow’s economy. As you can see, we have made important progress when it comes to developing the Thacker Pass project, but we see it as more than that. Together, we have the potential to reshape Nevada’s role in the green economy, strengthen our local communities, and ensure that our children are able to grow up and support families of their own in this beautiful corner of the country. mines feel like an invisible and separate part of the community, when in fact they are an integral part of our local communities. While not a physical part of our communities like a local shop or store, the sheer

Coeur Rochester

Coeur Rochester’s team participated in the Bureau of Land Management’s Cave Days at the Marzen House Museum. This annual event invites local fourth graders for an interactive, fun-filled day of educational mining activities, highlighting the history of mining and archaeology in Lovelock, Nevada. Our Coeur Rochester team welcomed nine juniors from Winnemucca’s Lowry High School to the Rochester mine and provided insight into career options within the mining industry. This site visit was just part of our partnership with the Mining Industry Foundation for Lowry High School, an endowment program that encourages, promotes and rewards high school students’ academic achievements.

Working in the mining industry requires many different skills. At Coeur, the skill set of the tradespeople who work across all areas of our business is one that is highly valued. These are the operators, technicians, maintenance experts and electricians, just to name a few, who keep our mines operating smoothly and safely. In 2021, our Rochester team piloted a Skilled Trades Internship program targeting the next generation of skilled trades leaders. Five students enrolled in a trade or vocational school joined our Rochester team to gain real-life, on-thejob training. The students were mentored by experienced leaders in the electrical, mobile and fixed maintenance areas of the mine. The internships provided hands-on training in the areas of interest of each student while supporting the needs of the business. Students were also given the option to continue their internship from the summer-long program to weekend shifts throughout the school year. With all participants natives of Nevada, this is a program that supports our goal of hiring local people, spurring economic growth and commu-

nity support. Our investment in the training and education of our technical interns creates a strong pipeline of skilled craftsmen and women for our business. Recruitment for our 2022 Skilled Trades Internship program is underway at our Rochester mine, and the program has proven so successful it will be launched at our Kensington mine in Alaska this summer as well.

Environment

In 2020, Coeur Rochester was the first mine to secure conservation credits from a private landowner in the Conservation Credit System (CCS) under the State of Nevada’s Sagebrush Ecosystem Program. The purpose of the program is to protect critical sagebrush habitat in Nevada while ensuring continued environmentally sensitive and sustainable mining practices. Under the CCS, Coeur Rochester provided full funding to preserve and enhance over 3,000 acres of vital greater sage-grouse habitat in Elko and Humboldt Counties, adjacent to our operations. In January 2022, Coeur finalized its second transaction under the CCS to secure credits for the Lincoln Hill exploration project and received confirmation of the transaction from the Sagebrush Ecosystem Program.

Some of our operations in Nevada are located near greater sage-grouse leks, or breeding areas, and our operations seek to minimize impacts to this endangered species. During their breeding season, no exploration or construction activities are performed within three miles or line-ofsight of an active greater sage-grouse lek from one hour before sunrise to 10:00 a.m. Regular surveys are conducted by a qualified biologist with the results reported to the Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Department of Wildlife. We also seek to improve greater sage-grouse habitat where possible. Hecla will not knowingly disturb nesting migratory and other game birds. Thacker Pass partnered with the University of Nevada, Reno Foundation (UNR Foundation) to establish the Great Basin Sagebrush Restoration Fund (GBSR Fund) in 2017 to advance research and development towards improved, cost-effective restoration of sagebrush rangelands. RENO – The Nevada Mining Association (NVMA) announced the recipients of its 2022 Individual Safety Awards, which celebrate the industry professionals whose extraordinary efforts ensure mine workers return home safely after every shift. “Safety will always be the number one priority across Nevada’s mining industry – it’s woven into every aspect of our culture and operations for that very reason,” said NVMA President Tyre Gray. “Congratulations to the 37 award recipients for their outstanding commitment to keeping their co-workers and teams safe and healthy.” The NVMA Individual Safety Awards are based on performance during the previous calendar year. A total of 105 nominations were submitted, with recipients voted on by industry peers. The 37 individual miners will be recognized during an awards luncheon on Sept. 10, 2022, at the NVMA Convention in Lake Tahoe. In July, the NVMA will also announce recipients of the Mine Operator Safety Awards, highlighting the mining companies that have demonstrated unparalleled dedication to providing safe workplaces

NGM has allocated a further $300,000 to assist the college with their new Welding Lab expansion, which will allow many more graduates to complete the program, providing more skilled workers to support the growing needs of the area. What’s gold price outlook as markets shift from inflation to recession fears? Anna Golubova Kitco News

Gold’s volatility has been relatively low compared to other assets as the precious metal retains its “mild bull market” status and trades comfortably between $1,800-$1,900 an ounce. But don’t expect a gold price rally until some confidence returns to the marketplace, according to MKS PAMP. There is a shift in the market as inflation fears give way to recession panic, with equity investors opting out for cash over safe havens like gold, said MKS PAMP metals strategist Nicky Shiels. “There has been unprecedented damage in equities (and other assets) where money has

retreated into cash/US$, less so havens. Confidence needs to return,” Shiels wrote in a note Thursday. “With the sell-off last week in the SPX, its correction is in line with the median correction seen in post-WWII recessions, but it’s now the 4th worst ‘non-recession correction’ over the same period. We are in a market recession. Technically, SPX entered a bear market on June 13.” The irony for gold bulls is that the precious metal will likely need to see a combination of lower yields and a move higher in U.S. equities for gold to rise to the $1,880 an ounce level, she explained. As things stand now, gold will have more buyers at the $1,900 an ounce price tag versus the $1,800 an ounce.

“There’s a notable lack of interest from the investment community (outside of retail coin/ bars!),” she said. “The carnage in stock markets and other asset classes have kept the marginal player at bay.” One potential price rally trigger would be if the Fed “breaks something” as it aggressively tightens monetary policy. “Fed funds is only 1.75% (with CPI at 8.6%). Last week the Fed acknowledged inflation [and] took on … a 75bps hike. Overall, the details of the Fed statement were pretty dovish (they have acknowledged the economy is worsening), and recession talk has grown as data continues to disappoint and commodity pricing responds to demand destruction fears,” Shiels described. And as the Fed continues to make adjustments to its “unconditional” fight for price stability, recession risks are getting more visible in the daily macro data. “Today’s sentiment wasn’t helped much by lousy PMI data. Specific consumer & inflation-sensitive sectors like travel are still June’s largest decliners and are the poster child for the soaring inflation and strained

consumer,” Shiels said. The latest flash PMI data signaled “the weakest upturn in U.S. private-sector output since January’s Omicron-induced slowdown in June,” research firm IHS Markit said in its latest report. According to the report, June’s flash U.S. manufacturing Purchasing Managers (PMI) Index dropped to 52.4, marking a 23-month low. The service sector saw the PMI reading fall to 51.6 in June, marking fivemonth lows. The one outcome that would be bad for gold is if the Federal Reserve remains too hawkish, Shiels pointed out. “To get inflation and the macro backdrop right, one should get commodities right, and if the Fed continues to hike at +-50bp clips into pressured commodities prices and a lofty US$, that’s an added form of monetary tightening; that would be a huge tightening cycle and behind the bearish Gold narrative (or at the very least explains the hesitancy of broad-based investor subscription),” she said. At the time of writing, August Comex gold futures were trading at $1,826.60, down 0.64% on the day.
