A mine’s greatest asset is its people A mine wouldn’t function without the hard work and dedication of the mine’s employees. Whether the mine is large or small, mines take the jobs, safety, and health of their employees seriously. This is often shown in the stellar people they employ, the programs that exist to support their employees and the support they pour into the local communities. Coeur Rochester for example, awarded 14 scholarships in 2020 and partners to fund local groups and events like 4H, Lovelock Frontier Days and the Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo. SSR Marigold celebrated 3 years in June of safe operation with contractor partners by providing a tri-tip lunch, bounce houses, games, and more at Vesco Park in Winnemucca, followed by an Annie Oakley Tournament at the Winnemucca Trap Range.

An unexpected turn for the best Lessons and insights from a governmental beginning turned 25-year mining career By Ashley Maden

Lithium Nevada Corp. Vice President of Government and Community Relations Tim Crowley started his professional career with sights set on politics and government affairs, never did he imagine he would find himself with a mining career spanning a quarter of a decade and counting. Crowley admits that he didn’t understand mining much prior to his unanticipated entry into the industry as a professional, which led to being President of the Nevada Mining Association and now to working for one of the nation’s most closely watched lithium projects in northern Nevada. Crowley’s father, the late Dr. Joeseph N. Crowley spent much of his career as a professor at the University of Nevada Reno, serving as president of the university for a record-setting 23 years from 1978 to 2001, the
longest-serving president at a single institution among the nation’s principal universities at the time of his departure from the position. The Joe Crowley Student Union is named after professor Crowley and his many contributions to the university and the local community. (Tim) Crowley said he didn’t desire a career in academia like his father but instead wanted to be involved in politics because he enjoyed learning about people and solving problems on a big-picture level. Crowley obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of Nevada Reno with focused studies in geography and political science. After completion of his undergraduate studies, Crowley took an opportunity to work for then Nevada Senator Harry Reid in Washington D.C. as part of an internship program. With this opportunity, Crowley said he found value in managing a diverse and heavy workload of issues that traveled through the office, often physically taking boxes of work home to complete as email and the internet had not yet been adopted as the primary form of communication. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my career,” said Crowley. “Every day it was something different and I was constantly learning.” The position led to an opportunity to work for Governor Bob Miller in the department of conservation, which led

to his introduction to the mining industry. A friendship and business relationship between him and a couple of members of the mining industry led to a job offer to work for the Nevada Mining Association in government affairs when Governor Miller’s term neared end, along with Crowley’s job. During his time with the Nevada Mining Association, Crowley had the opportunity to work in Las Vegas for four years,

which helped him better understand the differences and similarities between various communities around the state. Crowley has now worked in the mining industry for 25 years in numerous capacities and said it’s the best career path he never imagined taking. “People don’t realize that mining is a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) industry where you find some of the smartest and hardest working people,” said Crowley. Crowley’s big-picture thinking, problem-solving abilities and background have helped him be able to work alongside people such as engineers, geologists, and chemists to help solve problems and close gaps in communication and development. “I’m a connect-the-dots person that figures out how to put the right people in the room to address problems and find solutions,” said Crowley. “I enjoy helping the hard science people solve problems and work with others.” Crowley served as the Nevada Mining Association President for six years following the financial crisis of 2008, prior to consulting with various mining companies throughout the state to solve problems and help the industry work through common issues at various levels. “During that time (mining association) we worked really really hard to help the state address its fiscal needs, but also understand and help policymakers understand that the mining industry does pay a significant amount of revenue,” said Crowley. “We pay for all the costs of the services we need and more, and we are an exporter of revenue to urban Nevada.” Urban areas of Nevada largely consist of Clark and Washoe counties. Crowley said he observed that the state can be classified into

Rural mining communities are recognizable by large mining companies that contribute to significant capital infrastructure projects, which improve the quality of life for its residents and employees, outside of tax obligations. Nearly half a million dollars was contributed by Barrick and Newmont (prior to the formation of Nevada Gold Mines) to the current Health Sciences and Technology building construction at the Winnemucca Great Basin College campus, with the nearly $10 million dollar project largely funded by various community organization donations and a matching grant from the William N. Pennington Foundation. Across the state, Crowley said it’s critical for people to understand the mining industry and how it contributes to the entire state, as well as to the local communities which house its workforce. He said that many people don’t realize that almost

every industry in modern society depends on the mining industry for its raw materials, such as computers, cars, phones, buildings, etc. While consulting, Crowley found a passion for working with the proposed lithium project located north of Winnemucca near the community of Orovada, he joined the project fulltime in July 2018 and currently serves as the Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Relations. Crowley said the proposed lithium project aims to provide great jobs and economic benefits to the rural communities in northern Humboldt County where concerns have been raised regarding funding available for school and road infrastructure development and safety. Crowley said that his time in the mining industry has helped him recognize the value mining organizations can provide throughout projects with consistent community engagement efforts involving counties, residents, federal level policy-makers and regulators to keep up with the moving parts and be proactive about solving problems together. Throughout his roles with the Nevada Mining Association, consultant projects and now working for Lithium Nevada Corp., one valuable industry opportunity Crowley observed is consistent and successful communication
of complex information and issues in a way that stakeholders can understand and proactively contribute to problem-solving. Crowley’s time with the Nevada Mining Association and consulting gave him a big-picture perspective of the industry across the state. With the lithium project, he has gained insight into more intricate details of the governmental and environmental processes at the beginning of a proposed mining development while working with nearby rural community residents to understand and work together to resolve project-related issues and concerns. Crowley said one of the things that made him want to be a more integrated part of the lithium project is the organization’s priority to being as carbon neutral as possible while safely mining a mineral that has the potential to help lower the global carbon footprint. The proposed project located in Humboldt County, Nevada has the potential to provide a quarter of the world’s demand for lithium for a current estimated life of 46 years. Crowley said he anticipates trends in the mining industry to include growth in stable jobs while providing local and statewide economic benefits

and continuous improvement of safety practices, environmental responsibility and sustainability. Crowley said that another big opportunity in the mining industry is diversification of the workforce, helping women and under-served minorities statewide understand the professional opportunities available to them in mining. Crowley currently resides with his wife Stacey in Reno where the rest of his family is from, he said he comes from a family where his parents were great leaders in the things they have done as a family and within the local community, a legacy he aims to continue to create in his own life, career and community involvement. Nevada local recognized by Cyanco In March, Winnemucca local Tawnya Plascencia was recognized as one of “Cyanco’s Stars.” According to their press release, Cyanco’s most important asset is its people and Cyanco regularly recognizes their hard work. Check out two of Cyanco’s ‘Stars,’ who are making tremendous contributions to Cyanco – and customers – every day. Tawnya Plascencia, Accounting was recognized for her contributions to the company. The following was printed in their press release. Professional History: “I have lived in Nevada for most of my life and have a long history in mining. My parents were both miners. My husband works at a local mine (one of Cyanco’s customers), and I worked in a mineral testing lab for seven years before coming to Cyanco in 2014. My first role at Cyanco was working on customer invoicing and customer relations. I moved into an accounting assistant role in Accounts Receivable and grew from there by taking on many different challenges. It keeps me busy!” Teamwork as a Value: “Teamwork
is what it takes to run a business, and Cyanco people are great team players. From my perspective, it all starts with a positive attitude. Some days are more stressful than others, but you always have to be approachable and patient. If you act as a team player, others will do the same for you. The Accounting Team is a perfect example of this. Everyone has respect for one another and is open in their communications. Because of this team dynamic, we’ve accomplished so much this year – despite everyone working remotely. It’s really been amazing to see.” Favorite Thing About Working at Cyanco: “Cyanco is a very family-oriented company, and that’s important to me. If you need to take care of something personal, like an appointment with the pediatrician or running an errand for a family member, it’s never an issue. I have nothing bad to say. It’s a good company, with good people, and I see myself making a long career here. Recognized with Plascencia was Commercial Manager Jillian Carmichael. Day-to-Day Responsibilities: “I work on company-wide demand planning. That means I spend a lot of time with Supply Chain and Logistics doing short- and longterm forecasting.” Trust as a Value: “From a customer perspective, Cyanco has very long-standing relationships, largely built on trust. NVMA celebrates Women in Engineering Day By Drew McGregor Nevada Mining Association
June 23rd marks International Women in Engineering Day, celebrating the accomplishments and strides women have made in engineering fields, while also recognizing the work that still needs to be done to ensure young women pursue their interests and dreams. For over 150 years, engineers have played a vital role in Nevada mining, the state’s original STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) industry. From the Comstock Lode to the Carlin Trend, engineers in mining have been responsible for a number of technological advancements. Unfortunately, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, employing women was frowned upon in the industry, some states even making it illegal for them to work on a mine site. These old and tired stereotypes have largely been eliminated, but there is still more to be done. Across the globe, fewer than 30% of all college students and researchers in STEM subjects are women. In the United States, only 11% of engineers are female. Considering that the majority of career paths available to today’s children will require a background in STEM, it is more important than ever to make sure

young women aren’t discouraged from gaining the skills they’ll need on the job market. Programs across Nevada are helping address the issue. The University of Nevada, Reno hosts an annual Young Women in Engineering Camp, that introduces middle school-aged girls to engineering subjects and allows participants to speak directly with women professionals working in those fields, including mining. Soroptimist International of Elko holds the Dream It, Be It Career Support Day for Girls every spring, where Elko Country high school girls meet with successful women on how to pursue their goals with confidence. While there is still progress to be made, programs like these will help encourage the next generation of STEM professionals. Nevada Gold Mines Establishes Employee Giving Program, the Heritage Fund Initial $500,000 investment supports local communities
ELKO, Nevada – Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) recently launched the company’s new employee giving campaign, the Heritage Fund, on December 1st, 2020. The charitable workplace giving program includes an employee-driven campaign to support nonprofit organizations today and an Endowment Fund to support community needs into the future. Through the Heritage Fund, NGM employees have the option to support non-profit organizations of their choice to reflect personal values, passions and pursuits. NGM provided all 7,000 employees with $25 to start their giving account and will match 120 percent of each employee contribution to qualified organizations or to the Endowment Fund. NGM also invested an initial $500,000 to kick off the Endowment Fund portion of the program, which will be professionally managed and invested. The Endowment Fund was established as
the financial legacy NGM will leave for long-term sustainability in the communities where the company operates. “We understand and appreciate how important the services are that non-profit organizations provide for our communities,” said Greg Walker, NGM Executive Managing Director. “NGM strives to be a valued member of our local communities, and it is my hope that the Heritage Fund will be a source of strength in our local communities for many years to come.” The Heritage Fund is a 501c(3), managed by Executive Director Shane Moss and governed by a nine-person Board of Directors. “Non-profit organizations play a vital role in our communities and will benefit greatly from our collective support. These causes often assist critical health and human services, important educational and environmental initiatives, community development, and even wildlife and habitat improvement. This is our opportunity to contribute to the organizations that are most meaningful to each of us at NGM and make a positive impact in the communities where we live,” said Heritage Fund Executive Director, Shane Moss. Marigold to Expand Current Mine in 2021 By Hannah Arionus

Marigold was founded in Nevada in 1989 and is located in Lander and Humboldt County. In 2014 SSR Mining acquired the company. According to SSR Mining, Marigold is expected to produce 211,000 ounces of gold per year. In their 30 years of operation, Marigold has achieved high marks of gold production reaching a record of 4 million ounces of gold produced in 2020. This record is equivalent to a cube that is 6.1 feet on each side. Marigold’s operation is now a large run-of-mine heap leach operation with several open pits, waste rock stockpiles, leach pads, a carbon absorption facility, and a carbon processing and gold refining facility. In recent years Marigold has recognized their need for growth in order to sustain their current level of production. The company has acquired new land and are currently conducting exploratory drilling in those areas.

The first recorded gold production from the Property was from an underground mine in 1938. In August 1989, the first gold doré bar was poured at the Marigold mill.
In 1994, mining of the 8S deposit was completed, and the Marigold mill was no longer used to process ore. At this point, Marigold became a run of mine (ROM) heap leach operation

However, Marigold’s current actions toward mine expansion are focused on going deeper rather than growing outward. Back in 2019 Marigold got the record of decision from the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection to proceed with the MacKay Optimization Project. This optimization project will allow for the expansion of the MacKay open pit mine through dewatering projects that will effectively lower the water table of the mine and allow Marigold to harvest deeper ore in a safe manner. “We’re looking to expand those pits
further down, to be able to access ore that is below the water table. We want that ore to be dry so that as we’re mining through it, that creates better stability in those open pits and creates a safer environment for our miners to work in.” Don Dwyer, Marigold Mine Manager, said in a recent interview. The main method of water movement will take place through Rapid Infiltration Basins or RIBs. These basins are designed to integrate water back into the groundwater system, so as not to negatively affect the local water system by removing it entirely. “They’re basically a series of pools or ponds that allow the water that we pull out of the ground to infiltrate back into the groundwater further away from where we are mining. In the gist, that’s really the key of what we’re doing this year. Putting in the wells or the pools in order to infiltrate water back into the ground.” Dwyer said. Rapid Infiltration Basins will return the dewatering back into the aquifer and will not have an impact on the

dewatering project would affect the quality of water in the area, both Dwyer and Luther emphasized the minimal level in which the optimization of the Mackay Pit would affect the current water systems and quality. “For Marigold, because the dewatering rate is relatively small it doesn’t have a lot of impact in terms of changing the groundwater system. Particularly, with respect to the Humboldt River, there really is no impact,” Luther said. Other mines in the area have repurposed water cultivated in dewatering projects as irrigation water. While Marigold does not have plans to execute this on their current dewatering projects, a portion of the water will be used in the mining process. “Part of the discharge from the dewatering system will displace regular pumping from water production wells that Marigold drilled and completed years ago. So there’s a net benefit there. Some of the dewatering water will go to process and
mitigate pumping in other areas,” Luther said.
Community impact
Marigold currently has a staff of 450 employees. With the current expansion projects on the horizon, the company hopes to maintain that level of staff for at least another 30 years. The mine currently utilizes a fleet of 290 - tonne haul trucks and three loading units. However Marigold gold processing takes place with a third party refinery, which means the success of Marigold has a ripple effect across several different industries and companies. “Through my career, mining has had a positive impact in this

area. You see lots of different jobs connected to the mine. There’s not only the miners that are working out here at the different mines in this area, but all the suppliers that support mining. So it’s provided quite a bit of jobs there. I think mining has a positive impact on the community as a whole.” Dwyer said. The big push for Marigold to undergo this project is for continued sustainability, not only for their mining practices as a company but also so they may sustain supporting surrounding communities as they have throughout their 30 years of operation. One of the areas they support in particular, is education. Marigold has partnered with the Humboldt County School District and Grand Basin College in various ways. One of the highlights of their partnership is a teacher appreciation night they
host each year for schools in Battle Mountain and Winnemucca. Marigold has also developed a scholarship program with Grand Basin Colleges, investing in students who have an interest in jobs surrounding mining. Students who receive scholarships are also given opportunities for hands-on experience through internships. New Nevada legislature AB495, will also expand minings current level of contribution to the tax base. A portion of this increased contribution will be earmarked for education starting in 2023. The expansion of Marigold represents an opportunity not only for the company but also for the local community the mine exists in. F

Top 10 largest gold mines in the US in Q1 2021 – report By Vladimir Basov Kitco News
Kitco ranked the top 10 largest gold mines in the US based on gold production reported for Q1 2021. • Barrick’s Carlin is the largest gold operation in the US and the second largest in the world. Gold production in Q1 2021 of 373 koz was 9% lower compared to the first quarter of 2020, mainly because of lower roaster throughput due to higher carbonaceous content, which in turn also negatively impacted the overall feed grade due to blending. • Another Barrick’s Cortez mine sits second. Gold production in Q1 2021 of 163 koz was 22% lower compared to Q1 2020, driven by lower production across all processing facilities. Oxide mill production was lower due to the processing of slightly lower open pit stockpile grades. Heap leach production was lower due to a combination of a longer leach cycle caused by a higher proportion of alluvium material and a previously disclosed geotechnical event in the Pipeline pit at the end of the third quarter of 2020, which temporarily delayed the placing of tonnes. Additionally, production from the roasters was lower mainly due to a decrease in ore processed from Cortez Hills Underground as well as lower grades, partially offset by an increase in open pit refractory
stockpiles processed. • Another Barrick’s Turquoise Ridge mine is third. Gold production in Q1 2021 of 149 koz was 9% higher than in Q1 2020 as a result of higher throughput at the Sage autoclave. Improved mining rates at Turquoise Ridge underground in the first quarter of 2021 were largely offset by a fall of ground at Vista underground, which was remediated during the quarter. Major maintenance of the Sage autoclave is scheduled for the second quarter of 2021. • At Kinross’ Round Mountain gold mine, the fourth largest gold operation in the US, mining activities during the quarter were impacted by precautionary measures taken after wall movements in the north wall of the pit were detected by the site’s comprehensive monitoring system. The site deferred mining in the area, which delayed access to Phase W ore and affected production and cost of sales per ounce during the quarter. As a result, the mine produced 74 koz of gold in Q1 2021, which is 12% less compared to Q1 2020. • SSR Mining’s Marigold mine ranked fifth. The mine delivered gold production of 67,936 ounces for the first quarter, a
16% increase compared to Q1 2020, as the mine moved a record 23.8 million tonnes of material. The record movement was achieved despite a 35 day scheduled maintenance shutdown of the largest shovel. Nevada Gold Mines Launches ‘I-80 Fund’ $5 million investment to provide relief and recovery loans to local small businesses impacted by COVID-19 ELKO, NEVADA – Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) announced in July 2020 the launch of its new local investment initiative, the ‘I-80 Fund’. The program has been established to provide support through relief and recovery loans to eligible small businesses along the Nevada I-80 corridor, specifically in the Elko, Lander, Humboldt, and Eureka counties, which have been affected by the economic impacts of COVID-19. NGM has provided an initial investment of $5 million to the fund. “The ‘I-80 Fund’ will provide a means to help strengthen our local economy following the devastating impact of COVID-19,” said Greg Walker, NGM executive managing director. “Nevada Gold Mines is proud to be a community partner and we, as local residents ourselves, want to see our communities and the State of Nevada not only recover from these chal-
lenging times, but come out of this crisis stronger than before. I encourage our industry partners to join us in this endeavor by contributing to the fund.” The fund will be managed by Rural Nevada Development Corporation (RNDC), a 501(c)(3) organization that has been providing lending and other services to the businesses of rural Nevada since 1992. “RNDC is excited to have the opportunity to partner with NGM to provide such amazing support to the businesses of these communities in these unprecedented times,” said Mary Kerner, RNDC CEO. “The growth and prosperity of rural Nevada has always been our primary goal, so the devastation to our business community in the wake of this pandemic has been difficult to see. This fund will be instrumental in helping businesses rebound.” The ‘I-80 Fund’ will initially focus on immediate relief and recovery efforts. The intention is then to evolve into a small business development fund to stimulate and support economic growth in northern Nevada. Phase one of the program will focus on disaster relief and recovery loans for small businesses impacted by COVID-19, with loans ranging from $5,000 to $100,000 with a 2% interest rate. To qualify for the program, businesses must have been in operation prior to January 1, 2020. Nevada Gold Mines Drives Community Broadband Project ELKO, Nevada – Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) is pleased to announce the commencement of the Elko Area Digital Transformation Project, bringing reliable highspeed internet services to local communities. NGM is partnering with Anthem Broadband, formerly Safelink Internet, to offer broadband internet services to all citizens of Elko, Spring Creek, and Lamoille. To further benefit local communities, NGM will lend Anthem Broadband $10 million for the project through the company’s I-80 Fund program, a rural economic development initiative that supports small business development and stimulating economic growth in northern Nevada. Anthem Broadband will pay a low interest rate on the loan and once repaid, the I-80 Fund will utilize these funds to continue to support other small businesses. An additional $20 million will be loaned to Anthem Broadband through a community-based funding mechanism that will allow for the money and interest paid on the loan to go back to the community fund for investment growth now and to benefit local communities well into the future. Anthem Broadband will laying fiber in April 2021 and is working with a construction partner which will hire local contractors to execute the construction. Community members will be able to start connecting to the broadband service this summer, with full completion of the project expected to take 24 months.
