Folksinger and storyteller, and autoharp virtuoso Adam Miller performs a sing-along concert for all ages at 6:00 pm, Friday, August 23, 2019, at the Pershing County Public Library, 1125 Central Avenue in Lovelock, Nevada. For more information please call (775) 273-2216. Adam Miller’s website is: Folksinging.org An artist whose kind has dwindled to an endangered species, Adam Miller is a renowned old-school American troubadour and a naturalborn storyteller. One of the premier autoharpists in the world, he is an accomplished folklorist, songcollector, and raconteur, who has amassed a remarkable repertoire of more than 5,000 songs. Miller is a masterful entertainer who never fails to get his audience singing along and accompanies his rich, resonant baritone voice with lively finger-picking acoustic guitar, and stunningly beautiful autoharp melodies. Skillfully interweaving folksongs and the stories behind them with the elegance of a documentary filmmaker, he has distinguished himself as one of the great interpreters of American folksongs and as a storyteller par excellence. And he is that rare performer who appeals to audiences of all ages. The Tennessean, said that it was “…exceptionally inspiring to witness this true master of eclectic art forms and keeper of the flame of endangered American traditions…” Pete Seeger admired his “wonderful storytelling!” A concert promoter in Melbourne Beach, Florida, said Miller’s stage presence “…will charm even the most die-hard iPod-loving kids or reluctant significant others.” NPR called him “a master of the autoharp.” The Syracuse News Times said his performance was “mesmerizing.” The Grand Traverse Insider called him, “A National Treasure!” Traveling 70,000 miles a year, Miller performs over 200 concerts annually in 48 states, from the Everglades to the Arctic Circle. More than 1.5 million students have attended his Singing Through History! school assembly programs. He has performed live in over 2,000 American public libraries

HORSESHOE PITCHERS!!
Eilen Jewell laughs when told her label’s president called her a musicologist. But she confirms she and her husband and bandmate, drummer Jason Beek, have a passion for studying American music. Known for what allmusic.com describes as a “country-flavored and blues-infused version of contemporary folk (which also can include healthy doses of rockabilly and surf),” Jewell’s discography includes several albums of original material and one of Loretta Lynn covers. Jewell has also recorded two albums with her eight-piece gospel-group side project the Sacred Shakers. But this latest effort, which she and Beek co-produced, with engineering

by pianist/banjo player Steve Fulton and Pat Storey, is her first collection of blues — despite the fact that she credits the genre for igniting her musical curiosity in the first place. That’s because, even though she’s dreamed of recording a blues album since discovering Howlin’ Wolf as a Boise, Idaho, teen, Jewell had to convince herself she could — and should. While Jewell doesn’t exhibit whiskey-scratched vocal tendencies, she can certainly make a gutbucket lose some splinters — or beguile with silky sexiness. It’s as if she’s doing a one-woman play, slipping into a different persona with each song — a feat that becomes even more impressive when she reveals these tracks were recorded in only two days, live, and that Miller and upright bass player Shawn Supra hadn’t even heard some of them beforehand. That’s how spontaneous Openit Horses actually was. They just happened to book some August 12th studio time during a free day in Boise, and had so much fun playing these songs they decidedopen, to makenon-sanc clay pits. Regis an album.

Summer of Silver Healthy Teens Program ELKO
Silver the Bald Eagle holds a special place in the hearts of the Elko community. Silver was shot by a hunter in Alaska in 1970. He was rehabilitated in San Francisco and released to Ruby Wildlife Refuge in Nevada in 1974. Silver lived happily in the Ruby Marshes for a year. Silver was a favorite sight to many people visiting the Ruby Marshes. He frequently argued with fishermen over ownership of a fresh catch...and usually won. Hundreds of people were afforded an opportunity to closely view a wildlife rarity...until June 25, 1975, when he was wantonly killed by a rifleman. Many of you know Silver the Bald Eagle. His exhibit opened at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in 1976. The residents of Elko, the Shoshone Tribe, Forestry Service, and many others gathered together to honor Silver by giving him an exhibit of honor at the Northeastern Nevada Museum. It has been 45 years since Silver
the Bald Eagle was released to the Ruby Marshes. His story is one that has touched the hearts of many Museum patrons. He holds a very special place in the hearts of staff, as well. This August, the Museum will reveal an updated exhibit for Silver. In the words of Silver’s handler, Lar Caughlan, “Silver, fly free!” The Museum is recreating the aluminum can drive that the community put on to raise funds for Silver’s exhibit in 1975. You can drop your cans off at the Museum all summer long! Elko Daily Free Press, Spring Creek Association, and Elko Senior Citizen Center also have aluminum can drop-off stations this summer in support of Silver. Please join us in celebrating Silver the Bald Eagle and his new exhibit on August 16, 2019, with a recreation of the champagne reception that was originally held to honor Silver when he came to live at the Museum. There will be food, drinks, and entertainment for all.

Fallon Cantaloupe Festival and Country Fair FALLON Northern Nevada will delight in its abundance of agriculture products this August for the Annual Fallon Cantaloupe Festival & Country Fair, set for Aug. 23 - 25 at the Churchill County Fairgrounds 325 Sheckler Road, Fallon. The three-day celebration will showcase locally grown Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe, the Cantaloupe Corral (featuring over 10 unique culinary plates from Cherry Bomb Catering, with melons provided by Lattin Farms), and Cantaloupe Beer from Great Basin Brewing Company. Back at the festival this year is the Schoeppner Shows Carnival, with 14 rides and games sure to add to the festival excitement. All live entertainment will be included in this year’s $8 price of admission. More weekend entertainment (included with the admission fee) are The Splash Dogs Water Show, local bands, DJ dance parties, and fun contests for the whole family. There will be plenty of Nevada grown melons to go around with a multitude of cantaloupe-infused beverages and food available in the Cantaloupe Corral. Addi-
tional melon-focused fun includes a Cantaloupe derby contest, Cantaloupe Shot put, a Cantaloupe King and Queen competition, and a Canines and Cantaloupes 5K/Fun Run. Tickets for the event cost $8 per day ($2 per day for children 10-3) or $15 for the entire weekend. For more information and to view the event schedule, visit falloncantaloupefestival.com. More about the Cantaloupe Festival from falloncantaloupefestival.com.... Where the gold began... The famed Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe saw its start in the Swingle Bench area of Churchill County in 1911, with the careful experimentation of crossbreeding by a local man, O.J. Vannoy who had found the seeds that were originally developed in Benton Harbor, Michigan. These luscious melons were grown here in abundance in the 1920’s and 1930’s as the demand for them in the Eastern U.S. grew; it has even been rumored that the Fallon Hearts of Gold were served in the White House! The hard rind made this variety ideal for cross country rail shipments, and the high price per crate made this a crop that’s price was worth the risk to the Fallon farmers.
Not all good things last however, as the market crashed in the late 1930’s and our festival’s namesake almost met its extinction. The once prosperous melon crop was replaced by the more stable production of alfalfa in the Lahontan Valley, and was only kept in production by a group of six Chinese immigrant families. (Thanks to them we can now enjoy our Cantaloupe a la Mode!) The Hearts of Gold persisted and a few local families were able to revive the vine back to its former glory. A festival emerges... The 1980’s saw a resurgence in the local food movement and growth of farmers markets across the country. In 1985, a group of locals saw the opportunity to bring back our beloved melon as well as to create a festival to fill the gap left by the
absence of the Nevada State Fair and Country Fair. Que a “Golden Return” and the start to what has become one of Fallon’s great events to bring fun and excitement to the community every harvest season. The tradition continues... Today the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival & Country Fair holds the title as one of Nevada’s longest running agricultural festivals. The 2015 merge of the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival & Oasis Stampede & Country Fair has brought together a strong group of volunteers whose goal is to provide the best program of activities to Fallon each year, focusing on the educational and entertainment values of the festival. The Fallon Festival Association is in a great position to do just that and we are pleased to be able to bring these opportunities to Churchill County.
