the highly engineered bicycles to achieve top speeds, and the 1,408m altitude allows riders an acceleration zone of over 5 miles, enabling them to reach maximum velocity before being timed over a 200-meter distance. The smooth surface was paved especially for human powered cycle racing in 2009 by Frehner Construction and the Nevada Department of Transportation using a Nevada Department of Tourism grant from the U.S. government. The high altitude and arrowstraight section of pavement has drawn athletes worldwide to test their cycling and running abilities since 2000. Spectators are welcome to the free WHPSC event from 7 to 10 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. each day, and a commuter bus leaves the Battle Mountain Civic Center at 4:30 p.m. and returns at 7:30 p.m. Grandstands are located at the timing traps for maximum speed
thrills. For those curious about the riders and their vehicles, spectators can wait in the “catch” area to see the racers assisted in their fully enclosed speed bikes. The Battle Mountain Civic Center will host a “Show & Shine” from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10 for those who would like to see the bikes and meet the riders. Event t-shirts, hats and posters will be on sale. The 3rd Annual Bike Parade will start at 12:30 p.m., and the line-up is at Etcheverry’s Food Town at noon. Drag races will be held in town near the high school on Friday morning, and all are welcome to test their mettle against the world’s fastest racers. If you’ve never tried bringing along a Dutch-oven on your camping excursions the Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook Off might inspire a new tradition. Despite their size or weight, Dutch-ovens can be a surprisingly versatile way to cook up food when traditional ovens or grills aren’t available. Come see for yourself what magic can be made in a Dutchoven at the Nevada Outdoor Schools 11th annual Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook Off on Sept. 14 at Vesco Park. The event, going strong for a decade is one of NOS largest fundraisers, the success of the event is no surprise once you’ve had a sample of the food the competitors cook up. Competitors enter one of four categories, Youth, Chuck Wagon, Bean Master or International Dutch-Oven Society for a chance to win cash prizes or the coveted People’s Choice Award. The cooks gather early in the day and cook up their delicacies, starting at noon the judges begin their taste testing and then step aside for the public to sample. There will be lots of
food, fun and prizes to enjoy. The event opens to the public at noon, make sure to bring your appetite! Those interested in trying out their skills with the dutch oven can register over the phone at 775-623-5656 or by email at info@nevadaoutdoorschool.org. Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Great Basin Desert: Reno/Tahoe Area RENO Stretching from the Eastern Sierra escarpment of California and reaching all the way to the west slope of Utah’s Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin is the largest desert biome found entirely within the borders of the United States. Generally referred to as a “cold” desert, it receives its meager annual allotment of precipitation (averaging around 9 inches) mostly as snow. To the untrained eye this gray, expansive “sagebrush ocean” often appears bleak and lifeless…but upon closer more skillful examination nothing could be further from the truth! The early fall season, after the searing heat of summer has subsided, happens to be the IDEAL time to explore this majestic landscape of shrub dominated valleys, riparian canyons, piñon/juniper foothills, and high desert mountains. Join
us as we discover together many of the amazing native/naturalized edible & medicinal plants that can be found growing throughout this uniquely diverse bioregion. Topics to be covered during class include: field botany/plant I.D, plant family characteristics, legal-ethical harvesting/ processing/preparation methods, edible/ medicinal/utilitarian uses, regional ethnobotany, plant toxicology (plus tips on how to avoid poisonous look-alike species), natural history, plant conservation and atrisk species, sampling of a variety of wild edible & medicinal plant preparations, and more! Our study will emphasize a dynamic sensory awareness of the plants via close observation, touching, tasting, and smelling. This class should prove to be insightful and rewarding for anyone interested in knowing more about the flora of this often underappreciated part of the American West.

The World’s Largest Free Hot-Air Balloon Festival Lifts off this September RENO
The Great Reno Balloon Race celebrates 38 years in northern Nevada
The Great Reno Balloon Race (GRBR) prepares to captivate its many spectators during the 38th annual event Sept. 6 through Sept. 8 at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, Nev. This internationally recognized event and beloved local tradition remains the world’s largest free hot-air ballooning festival. “There is something about waking up early, bundling up in blankets, and staring up at these magnificent balloons,” said Executive Director of GRBR Pete Copeland. “Every single year, much like the spectators, I am drawn in by the pure magic of the event — of the spectacular balloons and the memories that I know families and friends are making.” Before the sun peeks over the mountains, spectators will see the daily iconic Glow Show illuminating the park with a soft warm light — a signal that the event has begun. During the Show, the early morning sky will be decorated by the choreographed glow of upwards of 40 hot-air balloons. It’s not until dawn, that seven hot-air balloons lift off the ground to perform Dawn Patrol. Only a few pilots in the world can perform this skilled show, stamping this event a must-see for all attendees. This year, Dawn Patrol will be held all three days of the event. At Mass Ascension, the remaining balloons rise and fill the park with an array of colors

ELKO Downtown Elko is about to go through a transformation bigger than any it has seen since the railroad tracks were moved out in the early 1980s. September 26-29 will bring the Elko Mural Expo. The Elko Arts and Cultural Advisory Board have teamed with state non-profit organization Art Spot Reno to bring a large mural exposition and art festival to downtown Elko. Live mural painting, with 12 local artists, 25 regional artists, and two international artists will spend four days painting, on more than 30 walls of local businesses and public spaces. The muralists will be the stars of the Expo but they will be accompanied by art lectures, film screenings, live music, workshops, mural tours, an Elko DBA sponsored special wine walk, and urban art exhibits in local downtown galleries.
