The Swarthmore Centre, Woodhouse Square, Leeds Founded by Quakers in 1909 to provide opportunities for lifelong learning to the local community, the Swarthmore Centre moved to its current home in Woodhouse Square in 1920. Prior to that, however, one of the buildings had been the residence of Ellen Heaton, an artist, philanthropist and suffragette who numbered Christina Rossetti and John Ruskin amongst her friends. Her ghost has been seen at the Swarthmore Centre by staff and visitors over the years. One woman reported that a lady in 19th Century attire had tapped her on the shoulder and beckoned her to follow, before disappearing down a passageway. When the witness was later shown a portrait of Ms. Heaton she immediately confirmed the identity of the ghost. Another spectre, this time dressed in the fashion of the 1920s, has also been seen in the building, although his identity remains unknown.
The Leeds Library, Commercial Street, Leeds Not to be confused with Leeds Central Library, this private subscription library was founded in 1768 and is now the oldest surviving example in Britain. In 1884, the chief librarian, John MacAlister was working late one night. It had reached 10:55pm and he was about to leave to catch the last train home, when at the end of a corridor leading from his office to the library he saw a face “pallid and hairless” with deep-set eyes. He pursued the visage into the stacks where it seemed to detach itself from one of the bookshelves and shuffle off into a lavatory. This room subsequently proved to be empty with no obvious means of escape. When MacAlister described his experience to another member of staff he was told that the description fitted his predecessor, Thomas Sternberg, who’d served as chief librarian from 1857 until his death in 1879.
DARK ARCHES - ORPHAN BOY One tall tale tells of a little lost orphan boy who, running barefoot from one of his master’s scaldings, found himself in the maze of tunnels and corridors beneath the Dark Arches. He became so lost he could not find the way out and some say his ghost is still trying to. Some who have ventured into the maze of passages beneath Leeds Railway Station have reported hearing the pitter patter of tiny feet and the soft whimperings of a frightened boy, while others have reported seeing a figure staring forlornly at them, its head peeping from around a corner.
Temple Newsom Location: Leeds - Temple Newsam House Type: Haunting Manifestation Date / Time: Twentieth century Further Comments: Not alone in haunting this mansion, the blue lady is the best known here, having a room named after her. Other entities reportedly include a monk in brown robes, a Knight Templar, a small boy who climbs from out a cupboard, and a non-descript misty form. Screams have been heard from the South Wing, as have the sounds of something or someone heavy being dragged across the floor.

However, some 20+years ago my Dad was delivering pipes for plumbing work being done. His collegue who was doing the work wasnt there. My Dad asked where he was,the Staff said they'd found him in a state, refusing to work. He'd seen a lady go through a wall. (The BlueLady).

we went for a family day at temple Newsam today and we went into a room and my sister took a picture off her wearing a wig and in the picture was a knife blade with a bit off blood at the top off the knife pointing to her throat
I saw a very unexplainable floating orange glow lastnight as i turnd the corner facing the house it was completly silent an 1.39am so was very dark . As i lookd a it a split second afterward it spead up rappidly and flew through the trees towards the house . Was about head hight the size of a humans wingspan and as it passd thru the trees at no point cud i see the main sorce of light ie buld as u would .
It was just a strange orange glow . As it spead off me on my push bike and my dog running along side me decided to give chase .after only 300metres it disapeard into thin air. I realy cudnt begin to wxplain what that was but id never seen anything like it before in my life .
Not so long back, maybe 3 mothns ago at most, me and some friends decided to go to temple newsam one night as we're into anythin spooky. We went for a walk in the woods messin around scaring eachother, then returned to the car after the path ended at the house.
Shortly after being sat in the car for 20 minutes or so, we all heared this very eerie loud moan sound, or grunt, that seemed to echo around where we was. We just went silent from talking and looked at eachother as if to say ''did you hear that''!
Thats when we decided to go home! It was very very freaky, and none of us know what it was, but it didnt sound happy.
Also on a dierent note, iv also noticed a mist at the bottom of the road heading up towards temple newsam, that kinda appears from the woods, iv seen it a good few times
My friend took a girl there one night and was sat in his car in the carpark outside the house, facing the field, and he saw something running towards his direction on the field, and he said it wasnt a person as it was impossible for a person to move this quick, he said it looked brown. The girl saw it too and in a state of panic he started the car and began to drive away quickly, narrowly missing a bollard!
So i decided to look it up, to see if there was anything that could link his story, and i found something that said a monk runs over from near the farm and over where he was sat, and then on down to the bottom of the road near the woods.
When i told him this he didnt believe me at first, he thought i was just making up a story based on what he saw, but when he looked it up his self, he told me this is exactly what he and his girlfriend saw!
our little ghost hunting group of four, went to Tempy on tues night (night before last) around 8-30pm. Boy did we see and hear some stu!! We parked in front of the house and then went round the outside and through the gardens. We had the video camera as well as two digital cameras, which picked up loads of orbs. The video we've posted unfortunately looks clearer played directly through our computer! But we caughts orbs dancing round behind the hedges and while we were flashing the cameras, unknown to us, until playback, we caught a figure standing down by the bottom of the hedge, watching us! If you watch to the end of the video clip, a woman wailing is heard as we moved away from this area, but we never heard it at the time! Neither of us two girls were talking when the noise started! Eeeeeeekkkkk!!!! There are cars turning up all the time and going into the car park, but as we left, there were no vehicles in the car park, unless there is an entrance and an exit. But thinking about it, I only recall one way in and out. It is well spooky there on a night, I can tell you!
a monk in brown robes, a knight (in 1155 the area was given to the Knights Templar) , a small boy who climbs out of a cupboard and runs from the Darnley room, and a weird misty apparition. Apparently a young serving girl who was murdered by a footman also haunts the back stairs of the house.
Kirstal abbey area Abbey House Museum, Kirkstall Although substantially altered over the years, Abbey House Museum was originally constructed in the 12th Century to serve as a gatehouse for Kirkstall Abbey, the picturesque ruins of which stand nearby. When Abbey House was opened as a museum in 1927, it employed a live-in caretaker called Kate Hatfield and during the winter of 1929/30 she was regularly disturbed by the sound of a door on the first-floor opening and closing, followed by the swish of a cloak along the corridor. The phenomena occurred regularly between midnight and 2am, even when the door was bolted shut. Then in 1944, Mrs. Hatfield’s niece and three of her friends reported seeing “a monk in a rough brown habit… (who) seemed to be very frightened”. The ghost was subsequently associated with John Ripley, the last Abbot of Kirkstall, who moved into Abbey House following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 and was later buried in its precincts. nicola
i was coming home from work in the early hours of the morning about half 4, i was in a taxi with a friend and we were driving up kirkstall road and then turned at the traffic lights to go 2 bramley (sorry i dont no the names of the roads very well) wen i looked out of the window and saw the ghost of a young to middle aged woman all in white walking along the path at the side of the road next to an old wall that runs all the way along the road, she was coming frm the phone box and walking away from it with her head down the only other person who saw her was the taxi driver and he didnt believe in them untill now. i have seen this lady a number off times now and she always seems to be around the phone box..... i have also seen a strange mist on the pelican crossing, what looks like a little boy or girl running accross the road just abit further up from where the lady has been seen and at the traffic lights at the end of kirkstall lane.

Also the ghost of kirkstall abbey (the mad monk as we once called him) is that of a lay brother whom went mad after his brother was killed by highway men on his way from fountains abbey the monk went mad with guilt and began carving his brothers initials into the abbey grounds these can still be seen in the small bench nooks around the ruins.

Many years ago I was waiting for my girlfriend at the junction of St Annes Lane/ Kirkstall Lane. At the opposite side of Kirkstall Lane, corner of Queenswood Drive, a young woman was standing by a telephone kiosk.Hearing some footsteps behind me, thinking it was my date, I glanced around, seeing it wasn't her, I looked back across the road but the waiting woman was no longer there. The kiosk was isolated, there were no houses or any type of cover for at least 20-30 yards around, no one could have dissapeared in the second or two it took me to glance around. I thought it strange so to satisfy myself that I wasn't dreaming I walked across the road to check behind the kiosk. There was no-one there. When my girl finally arrived I told her, she agreed with me that it was very strange. Some time later I was told that a young woman , who had been waiting for a telehone call at this kiosk, had been knocked down and killed by a car as she was crossing Kirkstall lane. This happened in the 1960s and I still think I saw this young woman's ghost.

The Abbey is also famous for its repeated haunting manifestation of a former Abbot that walks around the building that has now been converted to the Abbey House Museum – although you are more likely to hear him moving around you than you are to see him. Benny
I heard that there was someone called Mary who drowned her baby in the river next to Kirkstall abbey. The water is cold and turned the baby blue. This gave Mary the nickname “blue lady” she apparently jumped from the bell tower. Her ghosts is now still seen roaming the ruins, acting out the event of jumping, standing in the road late at night, which is in between the ruins and the museum. She is also seen on a platform which leads into the water. The old, ancient fireplace in the museum next to the ruins used to be in the castle, but was moved into there. On top of the fireplace is a portrait of Mary aka “Blue Lady” and the workers of the museum report it falling off of the fireplace.
luke robson At kirkstall abbey museum i was going to the abbey when i looked through the the window and a white figure flow past me it was scary
The Abbey grounds are also home to a young female entity called Mary who witnessed her lover committing murder and then turned him in. She has often been seen with the ghost of a dog, though it is not certain whether or not they are connected
Leeds university i was working for a market research company a few years ago and we had hired
three rooms out in the university for research purposes.i believe these were
on the 3rd floor on a glorious saturday afternoon with no students around.
did notice a dicectual unit as i entered the car-park thinking there might
be something eerie in there.
1st incident- was speaking to our exec in the kitchen when after putting the
kettle on he noticed the cups started to move as he was chatting to me.he
looked stunned and stuttered the cups were moving.
2nd -was coming out of kitchen into venue, was walking down the corridor
when noticed slim young lady in floral skirt and long dark curly hair
(thinking respondent coming early)followed her through the swing doors and
turned left.
when i turned left she disappeared.
when asked manageress if had seen some-one come through she replied no.
had strange feeling and shuddered but didnt say anything as thought i must
be seeing things.
3rd -went to ladies toilet there was a waste bin holding the door open.
whilst washing hands a powerful gust of wind came blowing all over the room
and slammed the door shut with the bin on the inside. this was a beautiful
saturday afternoon with no wind knew something was not right.i rushed for
the door madly trying to open it in panic. still didnt say anything in case
my work colleages thought i was mad.
4th- going home time.
one lady from leeds said she would direct me out of the place as she knew it
well. we got lost.couldnt find our way out on the corridors.was like maze
with doors locking behind us. we eventually found ourselves in the staircase
and i suggested we may have to stay night there.she was so distraught. we
then went back up to the 3d floor and luckily the door into the corridoor
wasnt quite shut.fraction of an inch.phew sigh of relief!
4th- went back to our hired rooms luckily work colleagues not left for home
so all went down together.as approached the entrance as we were all chatting
suddenly my right leg caught up in a lasso rope.hopping with my leg i
shouted somethings not right here and that wasnt possible to catch my foot
in such height and a lasso rope hanging round my leg.god knows where this
came from showed it everyone. by this time i was stressed out..
one of my work colleage did tell me later that papers had been moved and
flicked about and there was something in there that didnt want me to go
..really scary and was still shaking driving home..
always wanted to report this but never got round to it until now. still get
the creeps when think of leeds university.
a ghostly butler and a haunted bell in The Grange, to the whispering spirits of Bronte and Macaulay and the ghostly soldiers of the James Graham, there are endless stories from staff and students about their eerie experiences During the First World War, James Graham was a war hospital where an astonishing 57,000 sick and injured soldiers were admitted to recuperate following injury in battle.
With all that sickness, death and suffering within its walls, it’s no wonder the building is alleged to be haunted, and many staff members working late in the building have unexplained stories about strange noises in its long, winding corridors. One security guard told Ian about the time he was locking up one evening, alone, when suddenly all the doors along the length of the corridor he was standing in opened and closed, one after the other…. the building right at the bottom of the central car park closest to Beckett Park was once a hall of residence. One of our security guards reports opening up the empty building one morning by the back entrance and hearing the sound of somebody exhaling sharply as if they were standing right behind him. Could it have been the ghost of a former lecturer, rumoured to have died in Bronte around 1920?
Cleaners frequently report hearing groups chatting in the ground floor corridors of Macaulay when working alone in the building. Macaulay basement is another hot-spot, having previously functioned as a morgue when James Graham was a hospital. When a tape recorder was set up after hours, amongst the silence and the sound of the whirring tape, an audible sigh can be heard as if somebody is standing right up close. Of all the buildings on campus, The Grange (the old grey stone building at the bottom right of The Acre if you stand with your back to James Graham) is legendary for its supernatural incidents, with many of our cleaners refusing to enter the building alone. Professional ghost hunters have investigated the premises and there have been late night sit-ins for staff and students to get to the bottom of its spooky mysteries.
The back stairs in the old servants’ quarters have also seen their fair share of spectres. Our head porter reports seeing a woman in white descending the stairs who vanished once he looked up. The bell at the foot of the stairs has no ringer, yet it has been heard to ring out loud and clear late at night.
The claustrophobic second floor of The Grange, a maze of low ceilings and complex corridors, is a hive of reported supernatural activity. We’ve heard reports of lights being seen from outside in the attic room window on a misty day (there is no light in the attic room), an eerie blue light that appeared to a group during a late night sit-in and furniture being moved around inexplicably. One of our toughest CARES room staff, generally unbothered by the spirits of The Grange, told us: “There’s only one place that I don’t like – the top floor. We’ve had proper ghost hunters here and they said there was a bad spirit in Room 209. Nobody likes it up there…”
One member of staff working after dark on a Saturday reported hearing doors opening and closing when they were the only person in the building.

Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Post 1997
Further Comments: A ghostly man in a white coat has been spotted in the recreation of a Victorian Street within this building, while a grey lady dressed in nineteenth century clothing waves at staff along the second floor.
Spooky sightings at the museum include a ghost of a woman known as the 'grey lady' in 19th century clothing seen waving to staff on the second floor, and the ghost of a man in a white coat seen by visitors around the recreation of the museum's Victorian Street.
Witch
The Yorkshire Witch, Mary Bateman, is one of Leeds' most notorious villains. In 1803 Mary poisoned three people living in a draper's shop near St Peter's Square in Quarry Hill. As soon as they were dead she robbed the house and shop. Six years later she was hanged at York for the murder, by poisoning, of Rebecca Perigo, the wife of a Bramley clothier. Mary's body was dissected in public to raise funds for the Infirmary. Her skeleton is now kept in the Thackery Medical Museum.
Middleton Leeds middleton station.
Since the accident all those years ago, reports have been made of a ghostly figure wandering along the stretch of track where the accident took place. Witnesses have described seeing a man, dressed in a thick coat, stumbling along the railway line, often with one hand over the top of his face, as though he was sheltering his eyes from the elements. The ghost has been observed for as much as a minute at a time, before suddenly disappearing in a flash of light. Interestingly, the figure appears to be fading with time. Early sightings described a totally life-like apparition, whose appearance was indistinguishable from a living human being. More recent sightings, dating from the 1980s and 1990s describe a transparent figure. Although the details remain clear, the ghost has become see-through.
The ghost of Middleton Railway has not received much coverage, despite the fact that the story and corresponding sightings have persisted down the ages. The railway itself is now run by volunteers from the Middleton Railway Trust Ltd. It has become a favoured location for railway enthusiasts from across the globe to visit, yet few realise that this historic location has a much darker past. Whats more, few are aware that Middleton Railway may also have the oldest railway ghost story known to man.
OMiddleton Henry Maude is the most famous. the story I have is that he was the owner of the old house in Middleton woods and owned most of the land there abouts he was also a local magistrate and by all accounts a bit of a Judge Jeries type who was deeply unpopular with the peasants. One night while returning home on horse back his horse is said to have been spooked and he fell and broke his neck ( murder or accident?) he is now said to ride down town street in stormy weather headless. Load of old twaddle maybe but upon his grave stone in St Mary's church yard are the words "my brother shall rise again" And I'm told his brother put this on with no religious meanings.

City Varieties Music Hall, Swan Street, Leeds One of Leeds’ most cherished live entertainment venues, City Varieties opened as Thornton’s New Music Hall and Fashionable Lounge in 1865, and has since become home to a veritable menagerie of phantoms. There have been reports of a man in a bowler hat sat near the piano; a man wearing a First World War trench-coat; a disembodied pair of legs climbing the stairs; and a variety of poltergeist-type activity such as cold-spots, slamming doors, heavy breathing and invisible blows to the back. The most persistent phenomenon is a “white lady” apparition thought to be the ghost of a female vocalist who once performed at the music hall. On one occasion, a TV producer was locked in the building overnight and slept in the dress-circle bar; he woke to find the room icily cold and the phantasmal figure of a woman in a crinoline dress staring at him. When he cried out, the shade vanished into thin air. luke armitage
i am in theater group at city varieties i do the summer youth projects at city varieties i have seen the ghosts they come to watch.

Crown court Leeds Crown Court, Oxford Row Leeds Crown Court is not an especially venerable building: it was built in 1974 on the site of a fire-station which ironically burned down. However, several members of staff have reported seeing the ghost of an elderly, balding man within its walls. On one occasion, a female security-guard, who has dubbed the apparition “Fred”, first saw clearly him walking along the corridor towards one of the courtrooms but when she followed him, she discovered the chamber to be empty and all the exits secured. Another security guard saw a similar figure crouching in a corner of that same courtroom and was so unnerved by the experience that he refused to work alone in that part of the building again. Curiously, the site on which the courts were built was the scene of an urban ghost panic in 1874 which saw great crowds assembling to catch a glimpse of the spectre—obstructing traffic and causing a general nuisance in the process.
