Kyle Williams Chair, Riverside Avondale Preservation Home Tour
Let’s remember that historic preservation is much more than preserving the façade of an old structure but is as much about preserving the way people lived and the environments in which they lived and the storefronts in which they conducted business. Without remembering the people, places, and essence of a neighborhood you cannot truly savor the spirit that grew Riverside and Avondale into the jewel that it is today.
The Home Tour Committee
We, at RAP know that keeping the historic district vibrant, lucrative, and a destination place helps our city continue to grow and attract the best and brightest in the nation. Just this past year Time Magazine recognized Jacksonville as one of the fastest growing top 25 city’s for millennials and this growth is in part due to the success of the Riverside Avondale Historic District. RAP is proud to partner with Jacksonville and the Urban Core to live up to Jacksonville’s famous moniker of being the “Bold New City of the South.” Again, thank you for your support by attending the 2019 RAP Home Tour April 27th-28th 2019. Enjoy the homes, patronize the businesses, and get a delicious meal in one of the historic district’s eateries, but most of all take a deep breath and take a step back in time!

PRESERVING COMMUNITY Established in 1974 orty-five years ago Riverside Avondale Preservation was created to stop the destruction of architectural treasures created near the turn of the last century. The thinking then was that newer was better, that the architecture of the past had little to teach us and even less to value. To stop the destruction residents banned together to create an organization designed to preserve architectural treasures and, in doing so, would save the unique character of an area designed for walking and living close to work and play. Today, we benefit from a historic district whose thriving local business districts, popular restaurants and convenient public spaces attract those eager to live, work and play near their home. Riverside Avondale Preservation has also evolved into an organization that, while focused on the

integrity of our diverse architecture and natural environment, is mindful to support the wide range of attributes contributing to a positive and healthy quality of life. The organization advocates for and promotes neighborhoods, businesses, arts and culture. It supports initiatives like drainage and flood control, pedestrian and bike-friendly infrastructure and enhancing the neighborhood’s traditional street grid. Finally, through events like Luminaria and the Annual Spring Home Tour it celebrates the traditions and successes of our neighbors and neighborhood. Riverside Avondale Preservation also recognize those who make the neighborhood a better place to live: neighbors who help neighbors and people actively preserving, restoring and revitalizing their home and business.

Twilight Party THURSDAY, APRIL 25 6:30 PM
BUY TICKETS NOW @ RAPHOMETOUR.COM THIS YEAR’S RIVERSIDE AVONDALE ANNUAL SPRING Home Tour Preview Party sports a new name and evolves into a new celebration of lights and the interesting people who live in our community. In the past the Preview Party, held the night before the Home Tour, was held at a home on the tour. This year, the Preview Party will be in a home not on the tour. No longer a preview, instead it has turned into a Twilight Party based on one of the most popular homes on last year’s tour. The inspiration was Home Tour committee member Phil Stantial’s residence. For the first time a home was displayed at night to showcase Phil’s illuminated yard. Additionally, there will be music by Darren Ronan and the scrumptious food provided by Biscottis. Dr. James P. Delgado and Ann Goodhart recently purchased a Prairie Style home constructed in 1929 on an Avondale street. Dr. Delgado will be our featured speaker during the Twilight Party’s cocktail reception. Delgado’s career spans nearly five decades of investigating the past and sharing discovery and history with a global audience. Archaeologist, historian, journalist, educator, museum director, television host and government official, he often jokes that his career demonstrates his fundamental inability to keep a job. Delgado’s work fits well with the historic preservation focus of the weekend. His professional journey has kept a focus on the past, especially our seafaring history. Passionately dedicated to exploration, for the past decade he has increasingly focused on deep ocean exploration, new technologies for reaching not only the deep but a worldwide audience
Jim Delgado through the use of robotic vehicles, satellites and the internet to bring the public along with him as he explores the world miles below the surface of the ocean. Delgado’s television experience spans more than 150 documentaries for ABC, National Geographic, Discovery, History, and many other networks. He was the host for all six seasons of National Geographic International’s The Sea Hunters, which focused on the discovery, examination and stories behind some of history’s most amazing shipwrecks around the world. He currently is the senior series advisor for National Geographic’s international series Drain the Oceans, and a frequent guest on the show. Delgado currently serves as the Senior Vice President of SEARCH, Inc., the nation’s largest company devoted to archaeology, historic preservation and museum services, working throughout the United States and globally. He remains active in field work, most recently leading search efforts to locate the wreck of Clotilda, the last ship to bring slaves to the United States on the eve of the Civil War. Join us during what promises to be a most interesting social event on Thursday, April 25 beginning at 6:30 PM. Admission is $50 per person. Tickets are limited. Tickets can be purchased at RapHomeTour.com or at Riverside Avondale Preservation (2623 Herschel Street.) A silent auction will cap off the evening’s events.

Revitalized Living FINDING THE SPACE TO TURN OLD TO NEW photos by Mark Krancer / stories by Jean Grimsley aylor and Avery Williams are just the third owners of this substantial brick Colonial Revival home, which was built in 1926. The Colonial Revival style is the single most popular architectural style in the United States, but this home boasts an especially fine facade featuring a dramatic entrance with elaborate iron gate, flanked by a two story-limestone frontispiece, and mature fig vines that cover the brick facade on three sides. The Williams 28

have made extensive renovations to the house; they gutted the kitchen, removed a back hall and rear bath, replaced all electrical, air conditioning and plumbing, and repaired damage caused by water and termites. They also completely redesigned the yard and driveway. “We love and appreciate the old houses and variety of architecture in this area,” says Avery, “and we are grateful that this community cares about preservation and wants to preserve our history.”
“When we first came in the house we loved the light the living room gets,” said Avery. “The living room is unchanged as it is now with the wood burning fire place.” Avery and Taylor also revitalized the historic windows. HOME | SPRING 2019

Avery believes the sunroom was originally a porch. They were able to save the original doors and flooring.

From the dining room the only access to the kitchen was one door in the center of the wall. The kitchen also was decorated with paneling that made the room dark. To improve flow and bring more light into the kitchen the homeowners closed off the center door and added two doors on either side.

The bookcases in the library were updated to appear more formal.
“We love the wide foyer and the light it gets,” says Avery.
All the floors in the house were saved except in one bedroom where there was termite damage. Most of the upstairs area was rearranged including the entrance to the children’s bedrooms. Walls were moved to create a new bathroom and closet.

Neighborhood Homes Welcome Guests April 27-28
3862 ARDEN STREET new job brought Jim Delgado & Ann Goodhart to Avondale from Washington, D.C. They selected this stately home built in 1929 in the Prairie Style, an architectural design popular among large two-story homes in the neighborhood. Its hip roof, dormers, broad boxed eaves, and tapered posts are characteristic of the Prairie Style. Over time the home has been modified to the Mediterranean Revival look it has today. Previous owners extended the sunroom and converted the garage into a guest house. Jim and Ann renovated the kitchen and

master bathroom. That work led to a surprising discovery: a supporting wall had been eliminated in an earlier renovation requiring extensive structural reconstruction. The home is located in the Arden subdivision, an area that predates the more widely known Avondale subdivision by seven years. In this neighborhood Jim and Ann said they found “the diversity of historic home styles, the large heritage trees, and the historic character of the shopping areas imparts a sense of small community within a sprawling urban area."

his beautiful four-bedroom, four-bath Queen Anne-style home was built in 1904 and features three fireplaces, three bay windows, 12 foot ceilings, original pine floors and millwork. Unfortunately, most of these historic features were obscured when the home was divided into four apartments in the 1970s. Vertical siding was placed over the original combination wood siding and shingle exterior, porches were enclosed, and random entrances were added. The building was in dire need of repair when a previous homeowner embraced the hard work of restoring the house as a singlefamily home. The enclosed two-story front porch was reopened, and a sensitive restoration ensued to rediscover its historic features. In 2010, the home won the Historical Preservation Award Restoration.

WHITEWAY CORNER Since the 1920’s this sand-colored brick structure has been lighting the way through the heart of the historic district. Electricity came of age then and was on full display as a series of street lamps were installed on Park and King providing a glow for residents on the way home from work or those able to shop into the night under bright white lights. This year marks the 50th anniversary when George Martin took ownership of Whiteway Corner. He is marking this special anniversary during Home Tour to provide a look back the workmanship still on display especially on the building’s second floor. Recently, George rehabilitated the second floor of the building removing coverings hiding historic molding and flooring and painted walls to the same color as when he first managed the new building. He is also proudly displaying many of the original posters, maps and other historic artifacts from his collection during the Tour. Many of the unique stores and restaurants will be open not only on Saturday but Sunday also.

riginally from Connecticut, Suzanne and Bill Marino were drawn to Avondale because its charming houses, walkable streets, and abundant entertainment opportunities reminded them of home. When they bought this bungalow five years ago not much information was available about the house’s history other than its date of construction: 1922. Although the original hardwoods, beautiful crown molding and trim remain, unsympathetic changes had been made over the years. A ramp had been added off the back, a make-shift laundry room sat in a shed-like structure, and the onceopen front porch had been enclosed. Bill, a retirement investment consultant, and Suzanne, an antiques dealer and interior designer, began a substantial renovation. A 420-square-foot addition was added to the back of the home, as was a third bedroom, and a large, eat-in kitchen was created by breaking through a wall into a small sunroom. The couple was careful to choose a contractor who was open to their requirements. “They worked with my design plans,” says Suzanne, “and the results are amazing. It turned out just the way I had dreamed.”

1843 CHALLEN AVENUE his brick two-story Colonial Revival-style house was built in 1927 by W.T. Hadlow with plans drawn by O.E. Schoepell. Now it’s home to Maria Tracy, a sales director for a Japanese-based biotech company who moved here for work in 2002. Searching for a neighborhood with a sense of community, she found her way to Avondale. “We saw many homes,” she says, “but this one brought me to tears.” The design wasn’t perfect, though. “It used to drive me crazy that the house was U-shaped and dead ended on either side.” So she created a back hallway, allowing a passage from the renovated kitchen to a cozy dining room, added an extra bathroom upstairs, and added a pool and hot tub while renovating the garage apartment. Maria shares the home with two terrific teenagers and also two French bulldogs, Tide and Ali. She’s thrilled with the improvements to the house: “Although some of the renovations in an old home are daunting, every single upgrade has brought our family so much happiness. It all worked out perfectly.”

Interestingly, the home is reputed to have a ghost that plays the piano, but “we’re still looking for her,” notes Liz. The Mission Style began to appear in Jacksonville in the 1920s. They were usually stucco with a parapet and, at times, stucco bands as the only decorative treatment. The couple have undertaken extensive renovations over the years including to the kitchen, family room and an outside kitchen. During renovations they discovered that the workmen who built the house had signed the foundation, located under the house, as a reminder of their impressive craftsmanship. Jack and Liz happily share their home with Sally and Stella, two standard poodle sisters, and Eunice, the cat.

RIVERSIDE AVONDALE PRESERVATION’S
wners Martin Wander and Richard Warholic have travelled the world together for nearly 43 years, and their home—the third they’ve owned in the Historic District—is packed with treasures from the many countries where they have lived. When the pair first encountered this 1913 frame and masonry home—reputed to be one of the few Sears catalogue homes in the area—it had been repossessed and was in very poor condition. Fortunately Martin, a retired architect, and Richard, an artist, were up to the task of bringing it back to life. They repaired and rebuilt the back of the house, added a backyard screened porch, replaced and improved all the bathrooms, as well as the kitchen, restored the floors and added crown molding and other architectural details. The couple is thrilled with the final results—and the neighborhood. “Riverside and Avondale are consistently beautiful, and livable,” says Martin. “It is one of very few true neighborhoods that are pedestrian-friendly and architecturally consistent in Jacksonville.”

RIVERSIDE AVONDALE PRESERVATION’S
2605 HERSCHEL STREET his magnificent home returns to the Riverside Avondale Annual Home Tour this year after being featured during last year’s tour in its “before” state. A classic example of Colonial Revival architecture featuring massive columns and a large verandah, the house was built in 1911 for David Leon, an insurance company manager at the May-Cohens department store. But when Donny Mak purchased the house two years ago, it had been vacant for more than two decades. The previous owner, who never lived in the home, had hoped to undertake repairs, but faced continual setbacks in his restoration efforts. As seasoned rehabbers with several award-winning restorations under their belt, Donny and his partner recognized the home’s “great bones and character.” Now, after a top-to-bottom restoration in which no system was left untouched, this stately home is ready for its big reveal.

2546 HERSCHEL STREET hen Michael and Janine Ondina bought this 1920s era Prairie Style home in 2014, a couple of the former owner’s alterations stood out as historically inaccurate: namely, the hair-washing sink in the kitchen and the tanning booth in the breakfast room. The house had operated as a beauty salon before the Ondinas purchased it, mirroring a pattern often seen in Riverside after city planners in the the 1970s rezoned large swaths of the historically residential neighborhood for commercial use. Fortunately, Mike, the general manager of Evergreen Cemetery, and Janine, the comptroller of a cemetery in Belle Glade, had some experience with a past renovation in the district. They gutted the kitchen, added a bath in the master bedroom as well as a new guest bath, refinished the house’s original floors, added a two-car garage with an apartment, and installed new professional landscaping. Now that their work is done, they appreciate all that Riverside Avondale has to offer.

1423 RENSSELAER AVENUE rguably, it’s one of the most unusual houses in the Historic District. It could be the smallest house in the neighborhood at 477 square feet. Truly a tiny house. It may also have the most rumors about its previous uses. It is rumored that the house was moved to its current location around 1931 after it served its purpose as a school house, or an Army barracks, or a farm house. Or, all three. The little building was scheduled for demolition. But Elizabeth McGovern, whose best friend lived nearby, always loved the “ugly” house. “I called the owner and asked if she’d sell it. Then I became the proud owner of a shack! After major renovations my shack became the tiny house.” It features a front-facing gable roof, wood butt-end shingles, square wood posts under a shed roof and a text chimney. Elizabeth said at the very least it needed a coat of paint. But she did so much more. “I moved some walls so I could have a closet, a washer/dryer and a bathtub. To make everything fit there was a lot of trial and error and adapting. Now, Elizabeth’s dog, Lula, can peer out the low window to watch all the people walk by. Says Elizabeth: “I love how walkable our neighborhood is and how the mix of affordable, rentals and single-family houses creates an economically stable and diverse neighborhood.”

RIVERSIDE AVONDALE PRESERVATION’S
1390 BELVEDERE AVENUE his three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath, Mediterranean Revival home has sat on its shaded corner lot overlooking a delightful pocket park since 1922, when it was designed by the architectural firm Marsh & Saxelby for A. Martin. The 96-year-old jewel is the third house that its owner, a retired surgeon, has rehabbed in Riverside Avondale since moving to the area in 1985. While the dual entry staircase, fireplace inglenook, and curved front door with stained glass tulip are likely all original features, several renovations to the kitchen and bedrooms have allowed for more modern living. The current owner, Jack Crump, added a second floor deck/porch, upgraded the study, and installed a “Harry Potter” room under the staircase in what once was the original kitchen’s pantry. Jack admits he’s not likely to move again any time soon: “The atmosphere of Belvedere, the Lee High School band, the neighbors of so many ages and mixes, and the diverse architecture and those wonderful trees would be missed.”

Welcome
TO HISTORIC SPRINGFIELD The 41st annual Historic Springfield Tour of Homes and Gardens, hosted by Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council (SPAR), welcomes visitors from around the region to enjoy the history, architecture and spirit of Jacksonville’s original “front porch” neighborhood. The Springfield Historic District is blessed with unique homes, plentiful parks, walkable and bikeable streets and proximity to Downtown amenities. That’s why many people come to visit; the sense of community is why people stay. In Springfield, residents know their neighbors; not just those on their block, but all around the neighborhood. Front porches, gardens and cafes serve as gathering places and regular social happenings include First Friday parties, foodie events, community improvement projects, family programing and music festivals, just to name a few.
Kelly Rich Executive Director
A playground for the wealthy and famous at the turn of the 20th century, the neighborhood is now a popular choice for those seeking an eclectic, diverse and semi-urban lifestyle. We’re celebrating 150 years as a neighborhood this year, and we hope you’ll join us for year long Sesquicentennial programming, which you can read about in this issue. During SPAR’s Tour of Homes and Gardens on May 18 and 19, patrons have nine properties to tour: five private residences decorated with a mix of modern and vintage styling (with construction dates ranging from 1887 to 2018) and three beautiful gardens. An extended tour of the neighborhood, the guided bicycle ride hosted by e2ride Bike Tours on May 18, features all stops on the tour, along with other notable places and people in Springfield’s history.

abrielle and Blake Duffie were renting a house on the west side of Springfield, but once they learned a baby was on the way they decided it was time to buy a home of their own. “We wanted something that was ready, completely set when we moved in,” Gabrielle says. Luckily their landlords, Mallik and Marianna Reddy with M&M Estate, are in the business of flipping houses, so the Duffies knew and trusted their work. The Reddys spent a year renovating the two bedroom, two bathroom craftsmen built in 1914. They kept all the original woodwork, with details flowing

throughout every room of the home. It was these salvaged elements that drew the Duffies to purchase it. “We love the wood trim throughout the house and the bar area. We like the modern features that they added. We didn’t have to worry about those things, since they were already done, but we still got that mix of old and new,” says Gabrielle. “The fireplace brick, window seat, bar, hard wood floors, and about 90 percent of the wood trim in the home is original.” Before the Reddys got their hands on it, the little house wasn’t nearly as charming as it is today. “It’s funny, the neighbors here were telling us no one
would buy it because it was so ugly. It was the eyesore in the neighborhood, and they’re surprised someone moved in,” she says. The home sat vacant for so long a tree that fell during a hurricane sat on the roof for about three years. But after the restorations and renovations the Reddys undertook, the Duffies thought it would be the perfect home in which to raise their family. “We love being close to Downtown, and we like the walkability and affordability,” says Gabrielle. “The main thing that drew us here was the homes. We love old homes and grew up in them so we can relate.”
“We love mixing old and new. The couch is from West Elm—we love mid century modern—but we have a lot of older stuff our parents have given us,” says Gabrielle. “I went with lighter colors to complement the wood so it wouldn’t be too dark, and added pops of color. There’s some orange here and there. The orange chairs are from a family friend.”

STANDING STRONG Jacksonville’s first neighborhood stands the test of time
H
istoric Springfield has been home to many of our city’s most famous—and infamous—residents, and the site of numerous significant events. Springfield was established in 1869 and soon became Jacksonville’s first “streetcar subdivision.” Early trolleys traveled down Main Street, connecting the community to Downtown. Springfield was the site of Jacksonville’s first municipal waterworks, completed in 1880, which still stands near 1st and Main streets and features “Big Jim,” a 100-year-old steam whistle that blows loudly to announce times throughout the day. In 1887, to encourage tourism in Jacksonville, the Board of Trade opened a spectacular “Subtropical Exposition” on Main Street in Springfield. Famed guests like President Grover Cleveland, Frederick Douglass and railroad magnate Henry Plant visited the attraction. The Great Fire of 1901 destroyed most of Downtown but Springfield survived, thanks in part to the natural barrier created by Hogans Creek— which at that time was a free-flowing waterway surrounded by swamp. Many city residents relocated to Springfield after the fire, fueling a building boom that led to construction of hundreds of homes. Henry J. Klutho, a young protégé of architect Louis Sullivan, came to Jacksonville to help rebuild the city. He built his own home in Springfield, the first
32

house in Florida using the Prairie Style architectural design, which he made popular with larger commercial commissions like the St. James Building (now Jacksonville’s City Hall). Many examples of his work can be seen in Springfield, including the Klutho Apartments at 1830 North Main Street. His home, originally also on Main Street, is now located around the corner at 30 West 9th Street. A large portion of Springfield Park was renamed for Klutho in 1984. Springfield’s Confederate Park, named for a 1914 reunion of veterans of America’s Civil War, was originally Dignan Park—home to the city’s first playground and location of our first municipal Christmas tree. The original Jacksonville Zoo was established in what is now Klutho Park in 1914. Its first resident was a single red deer, soon joined by a troupe of small primates who lived on “Monkey Island” in the middle of a lake nearby. St. Elmo “Chic” Acosta, a City Commissioner and namesake of the Acosta Bridge, was influential in moving the zoo to its current location in 1925, after the flooding of Hogans Creek caused zoo animals to escape their cages and terrorize the neighborhood. Businesses thrived in Springfield during its early days, as well. One of Springfield’s largest employers, a manufacturer of cigars, has been operating in the community for almost
100 years. Jno. H. Swisher & Son relocated its headquarters to Springfield in 1924. By 1941 the Springfield plant was the world’s largest producer of cigars. Swisher was an innovative employer, creating the United States’ first workplace nursery for children of employees on the top floor of its building in 1939. The “King Edward Nursery” won nationwide acclaim, with professionally trained nurses and attendants on staff around the clock. Today, Swisher International continues its engagement with the community, supporting Jacksonville PorchFest, the Springfield Tour of Homes and neighborhood safety programs. Of course, the community has had its share of notable characters as well. Charles Ponzi, of Ponzi Scheme infamy, had an office on Main Street, while Truman Capote, trailblazing author and socialite, lived on Silver Street as a child. Chuck Williams, the founder of Williams-Sonoma, lived in a Tudor Style home on Liberty Street. Slapstick legend Oliver Hardy, of Laurel & Hardy fame, lived on Pearl Street early in his career, as well. Springfield’s historic district is home to one of Jacksonville’s most diverse and inclusive communities, and a place where we celebrate all of our residents as well as our storied past. Signature Events Garden 2
324 E. 3RD STREET potted easily thanks to its mustard exterior, bright red doors and military flags, this two-tiered house stands out. Pius Fillipo Danisi (later Philip Pius Danese) was the son of an Italian immigrant. He purchased a city lot between Liberty and Walnut streets for $500 and in 1902, 324 E 3rd St. was built. Though it is over 100 years old, the home still has many of its original qualities with an added touch of modern on the interior. When the current owners, Michele Letourneaut and her husband, moved in in September 2015, they decided to keep the exterior integrity of the Danese house, but gutted the interior in favor for a more convenient and open floor plan for their family. The house now has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and one half bath. One of the more modern exterior touches regarding the house is the front garden—an attention grabber for all those that happen to catch a glimpse.“We chose to accent her porches with bold colors and give her a simple but sophisticated front garden,” says Letourneaut. The front yard features hedges, evergreen trees, potted plants, rocks, paved walkways, a fountain and more. “The back garden serves a specific purpose—privacy,” says Letourneaut. This can be seen through their use of hedges along the fence and trees that tower over their space. While they say their gardens reflect their lifestyle and the privacy that they sometimes need, the Letourneauts also mention that they always want to bring good attention and good people to Springfield. “While I believe our historical homes have become top contenders, it’s our can-do community attitude that wins over prospective homeowners,” says Letourneaut.

SPAR’s Signature Events build a sense of community among neighbors while raising funds to benefit improvement and preservation efforts Jacksonville Porchfest, held annually on a Saturday in November, brings thousands of people from across the country to enjoy performances by dozens of local and national musicians. Proceeds benefit SPAR's arts initiatives and help fund other cultural activities. This year’s Porchfest is scheduled for November 9, noon-9 PM. This is a free event. Since 2007, the Westside and Eastside of the Springfield Historic District have battled on the baseball diamond during the July 4th Throwback Baseball Game. Teams dress in vintage turn-ofthe-century uniforms and gear, and the game features an announcer and food trucks. A perfect setting for picnics and lawn chairs, the free event takes place this year at Klutho Park on Thursday, July 4. SPAR hosts a variety of other activities through the year as well, such as neighborhood cleanups, tree plantings, preservation workshops and monthly group bicycle rides. SPRINGFIELD’S SESQUICENTENNIAL words by Bailie Staton A 150th birthday certainly calls for special celebration and Springfield has planned months of programming in honor of the neighborhood’s sesquicentennial. Here’s a look at a few of the programs and events planned in the coming months: • According to WalkScore.com Springfield is most bikeable neighborhood in Jacksonville’s urban core. SPAR hosts bike socials to other Jacksonville urban core neighborhoods throughout 2019, including rides to the Riverside Arts Market, S-Line Rail Trail, San Marco, and Eastside Murals. Riders can also explore destinations on their own by visiting sparcouncil.org/explorethecore for suggested routes and activities. The map can also be used as a starting point to get to Springfield.
• A number of Historic Preservation Workshops aim to help residents and Realtors understand the unique processes and requirements involved in renovating a historic home. Upcoming workshops include several on the COA process (May 28, Jul 16, September 17) and one on code enforcement (November 19). • Springfield breweries Main & Six, Strings and Hyperion—along with Downtown’s Intuition Ale Works and Aardwolf Brewing Company—have
collaborated on the SesQ Saison, a Belgian style ale with a flavor profile of citrus and spice. The brew will be available at pop-up events held throughout the year. • A temporary pocket park installed on Main Street—aptly named Sesquicentennial Park—officially debuted March 6 but will remain open to neighborhood residents and the general public until it is disassembled in early 2020.

1554 N. MARKET STREET
554 North Market Street is a quaint house packed with color and an artist’s touch. The yellow exterior and vibrant blue doors add a pop of color to the block. This two-bedroom two-bathroom house was built in 1914. Heather Bishop moved into the house five years ago and has focused on making the garden a centerpiece of Springfield. “When I design and decorate the garden, I want it to tell a story,” Bishop says. As an artist, she creates all the decorations and gathers inspiration to make people happy when they see it. For different seasons and holidays, Bishop adopts themes and decorates it accordingly, spending on average 10 hours a week outdoors. A staple that always remains is her 10-foottall Queen of the Night cactus. For a couple of months every year, the tree blossoms white flowers. Bishop says this is the focal point of the garden because it’s unusual to find such a

Garden towering cactus in the middle of the city. Another fairly consistent aspect of her garden is what she refers to as her ‘twin tower’ flower plants. Staggered on top of each other are two columns of potted plants a couple feet high. For each season, Bishop changes out the plants depending on what will thrive, but neighbors have gotten so used to the tower of plants that if they disappear for a day, she’ll start getting questions. “I have neighbors who will throw a fit if I were to take those down,” she laughs. Since the look of her garden changes frequently, people frequently visit. “I never post anything on social media so if people want to see what I’m doing next, they’ll have to stop by,” she says. “Even if I offer to tell them what I’m planning, they don’t want me to because they like being surprised by it.” Bishop says she has something great planned for the SPAR tour.

hen Frank Noonan’s company transferred him to Jacksonville back in 2002, he and his wife Susan knew they wanted to live in a historic neighborhood. They moved into a house in Springfield that needed to be completely renovated, and quickly fell in love with the neighborhood as well as all their neighbors. “There is a camaraderie and diversity here unlike other neighborhoods,” Noonan says. As they became familiar with the area, they also came to love the Victorian at 1334 Hubbard Street. They became friends with the previous owner and would visit often, admiring all the things about the circa1895 house, like its quirky style and rounded porch. They never dreamed they’d have the opportunity to move into the house, but in 2011 they got the chance. The couple says they haven’t changed much besides the kitchen, which needed a complete remodel. Their garden, which Frank spends an average of eight hours a week on, has blossomed into one of his favorite parts of the home. “My dad’s family were farmers in Illinois and apparently I inherited the gardening gene,” he says. “I never tire of working outside.”Over the years, he’s added a small water garden, several bird houses and feeders, multiple water fountains, and a metal arbor that leads into their back garden. The couple say they’re also a fan of fragrant flowers, which can be seen from their collection of yellow and pink Angel Trumpets, citrus trees and gardenias. They also enjoy growing vegetables and herbs like tomatoes and peppers, happily tending whatever is in season.

Sesquicentennial Park
SPAR has installed a temporary park on Main Street, aptly named Sesquicentennial Park, in celebration of 150 years since the founding of the Springfield neighborhood. The pocket park will be in use throughout the year. SPAR will be hosting events through the year in Sesquicentennial Park and will work with other organizations that would like to use the space. Currently there are no public spaces north of 1st Street on Main Street in Historic Springfield. SPAR is leading the way to change that by utilizing this placemaking strategy that has seen success in many other urban areas. The goal is to create or enhance public spaces. This helps meet community needs and bring underused places to life. Organizations interested in using the park, can visit sparcouncil.org/ sesquicentennialpark Z

ebuilt in 1909 after the original house was cleared by the city in 1896, this four-bed, three-bath home was turned into a fourplex in the late 1920s by a young women who inherited the property. To avoid foreclosure, she rented out the four upstairs bedrooms to different families. Multiple owners and a couple foreclosures later, the house was boarded up and condemned. Nancy Ransdell purchased the property in October 2013 and renovated it with her two sons. Originally from Colorado, Ransdell moved to St. Augustine and lived there for 28 years. Introduced to Springfield by her son who purchased a home in the neighborhood three years before her, she fell in love with the area. She purchased the house after it had been off the market for several years from a bank foreclosure.

Ransdell says it was liveable though, “the prior owners removed anything that was rooted down to the house, like the chandeliers, and we had to do some renovations to bring her back to life. Trying to maintain as much of the homes integrity as she could, Ransdell restored the space through sanding and staining the hardwood floors and working around some of the antique pieces in the home, such as the hand-plastered moldings on the ceilings and the Lozenge windows. She started in the relatively large bathroom and turned the space into a laundry room, a guest bathroom and a master bathroom. Adding an antique clawfoot tub to the master bathroom was just icing on the cake.

On the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the Klutho House was designed by New York architect Henry John Klutho who was famed for helping rebuild Jacksonville after the Great Fire of 1901. “The resemblances are clear to anyone who knows both houses,” says Conner. It took Conner the two years he’s been living in Springfield to build his home. Not only attracted to the appeal of this neighborhood, Conner’s niece and family were already living in the area. As a retired english professor, it’s no surprise that his favorite room in the house is the library.

When the Peppers bought the house, in 2012, they aimed to bring some of its history back, fitting it almost entirely with antiques. “All our beds are from 1900-1930 except for one which is handmade of steel,” says Peppers. “Our couch is made from pieces of a clawfoot bathtub. The majority of our light fixtures were designed and made by me, out of things like antique birdcages. We’re trying to make it look less 1990s and more 1928.”

1427 N MARKET STREET he home at 1427 North Market Street, owned by the Rumbach family, has certainly had its ups and downs. After Hurricane Irma hit Jacksonville in September 2017, the family filed an insurance claim to help cover some of the damages to the historic home. In addition to having the roof replaced, the home required extensive updates due to interior and exterior damage. “We first met with them in November 2017,” says Elizabeth Evans, owner of E2 Design & Construction. "Throughout the next nine months, we worked with SPAR to gain approval for their restoration specifics and begin the transformation.” The restoration included replacing the exterior siding, which was painted a coral blue with lime green accents. E2 also added an exterior deck to the home, which expanded the outdoor living space. New French doors now lead to the deck, increasing the natural light in the kitchen and dining areas. Inside the home, all flooring was replaced wth luxury vinyl planks as well as carpet and interior walls were removed to expand the kitchen (which was comprehensively remodeled, updated, and expanded). The downstairs bathroom was expanded and the fireplace in the living room—an important element of a historic home—was restored. Among the other renovations were the replacement of a water heater (to increase efficiency), a complete re-wiring and re-plumb of the home and a replacement of the HVAC systems. The result of the extensive project is a home that is up to code, well-constructed and still maintains its historic integrity. Z
