PUBLISHER’S NOTE “ L
ook, there’s Shaquille O’Neal,” I said. “Where?” my 12-year-old son asked excitedly, lifting his head up and looking out the window of our car. Laughing, I replied, “Uh, see that huge guy walking across the street right in front of us? That’s Shaq. I know he’s in town for the wrestling event tonight. That’s got to be him.” Turns out it was Shaq. Not only that, within a few minutes of seeing him, the NBA legend climbed in our car for a ride to the Downtown hotel in which he was staying.
side of the road, near the crosswalk.
In early March I shared a small portion of this story via the Jacksonville Magazine Instagram. It was by far the most viewed post we’ve ever placed on our social media channels, racking up more than 5,000 likes and hundreds of comments. I thought I’d share more of the story here because it relates to our annual Best in Jacksonville feature article and a conversation I had with my son after we dropped off Shaq and continued on our way.

After picking up my son from school, we were heading home and driving through 5 Points in Riverside. That’s when I spied O’Neal crossing the street just ahead of us. He was walking alone and wearing a mask, but it’s hard to be inconspicuous when you stand seven feet tall and weigh 300 pounds. My son is a huge basketball fan, so as we drove by, I said that we would circle back, maybe see if we could get an autograph. Because of construction and traffic, turning around was a challenge. However, we did see him again, this time standing at the
By now he had attracted a small crowd of people taking photos. I told my son that I was going to pull up next to him, and that he should lean out the window and ask for an autograph. Which he did. “Mr. Shaq, could you please sign my mask?” my son asked. The 15-time NBA AllStar replied, “Sure. Can you give me a ride to my hotel?” And we did. So, after squeezing into the back seat of the car (he never would have couldn’t have been nicer. He signed my son’s mask, then reached for our cell phone, on which he recorded a funny message to two of Griffin’s friends, saying he had been kidnapped by my son. He also told the boys to study hard in school. Oh, and always obey your parents. As we headed home again, I explained to my son that what had just happened should be a lesson to him, mainly to pay attention to the world around you (and not just the cellphone) and be excited about the unexpected. And don’t be afraid to ask, what if? These ideas have been driving influences for Jacksonville Magazine for more than 30 years. There are amazing things happening all around us in Northeast Florida. If you don’t keep an eye out for them, they might pass by unnoticed. But, if keenly interested, the very best of the city will become apparent. The key is looking for it and then sharing it with others.

rehearsal. It may be difficult to choose between between hosting your ceremony within the Mediterranean Revival-style villa or outside on the plush lawn, but no matter what you decide, you’re guaranteed a breathtaking backdrop. Since 1961, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens (pictured p.100) has been a local landmark and gemstone of the Jacksonville creative community. Nestled on the St. Johns River, the beautiful gardens and sweeping water views offer the perfect backdrop for your big day. Round out the occasion with a reception or cocktail hour in the Terry Gallery for a truly unique wedding event. Work with the Cummer’s professional event planner to ensure your day is perfectly tailored to your style and needs. suburbs, the interior is dressed in exposed brick, funky lighting fixtures, huge windows and soaring ceilings. Outside is the back porch, an open-air patio space decked in pavers and wood. There’s a warming kitchen for caterers and a bridal suite for last-minute ceremony and reception preparations. The outdoor courtyard at the Casa Marina Hotel & Restaurant has hosted near-countless weddings, receptions and other special events. The historic 23-room boutique hotel sits just yards from Jax Beach’s sandy shore. In fact, a short boardwalk leads right to it. The third-floor, roof-top bar and restaurant provides a late-night escape for revelers. And they throw in the Atlantic Ocean views for free. Make it a full weekend and stick around for Sunday brunch.
Located inside Mayport Naval Station and only a shell’s throw from the mouth of the St. Johns River, many are surprised to learn that one need not be in the US Navy to attend or host an event at the Ocean Breeze Conference & Catering Center. With it’s beautiful and expansive lawn and garden area, spindly palm trees swaying in the breeze and sweeping views of the ocean, you might think you are partying on a set designed for Top Gun. The occasional destroyer passing by to enter the base’s ship basin and whirling Seahawk helicopters off in the distance only add to the anchor’s away atmosphere. There’s ballroom space for 300, plus an outdoor patio, broad lawn for tents, and a wine bar for more intimate gatherings. Have you lost that lovin’ feeling, Maverick?
