Picture Pawfect CAPTAIN Chocolate English Lab, 4 years old
If you bring Chick-fil-A nuggets into the house, be aware that Captain is keenly interested in them. Many nuggets have disappeared in his presence. When not playing with his purple dragon, you may find him visiting the hardware store, playing at the beach or cruising down the Intracoastal Waterway in the family boat. He gets into trouble rolling around in the freshly cut grass—which he loves to do—and then darting back into the house, trailing grass clippings everywhere. According to his owners, he snores louder than any pet or human ever heard.
FRANNIE & BIRDIE Boston Terriers, 2 and 3 years old
“Birdie is sharp as a razor, sleek and inquisitive and so energetic we have wondered at times if she has an amphetamine supply we don’t know about,” says her owner. “She is a top-notch snuggler with a love for ice cubes, watermelon and rotisserie chicken.” Frannie, on the other hand, prefers a simpler, quieter life. “She avoids exercise at all cost. Her best day would be spent laying in the sun on a pile of blankets, getting up only to eat any snack she can get her paws on.” Both are extremely spoiled. And they wouldn’t want it any other way.
WANT TO SEE YOUR BELOVED ANIMAL IN JAX MAG? Nominations for Picture Pawfect pets can be made via our website, under the heading Reader Polls. Previously featured Picture Pawfect pets may be viewed there, too.

LUCY Cavapoo, 11 years old
There’s nothing this pretty lady enjoys more than a long walk along the streets of Mandarin. Stopping for a cool treat from Whit’s frozen custard makes her walks even better. Lucy keeps healthy by eating an apple every day. She loves rolling in sidewalk chalk and making her fur look like it’s tie-dyed. She is always up for a trip to the beach and oftentimes jumps in the front seat to pretend she’s driving. She loves barking at trucks and lawn mowers, but knows to keep quiet while watching a Jaguars game. u

Aesthetician
NICOLE EDNEY (WILLIS), SHINE SKINCARE The treatment menu at Shine Skincare reads like a dream-come-true for those looking for a little selfindulgence. Facials, chemical peels, microneedling, hydrafacials and more are performed by Nicole Edney, a licensed medical esthetician with more than eight years’ experience under her belt. “Nicole is amazing. She makes you feel completely comfortable and my skin never looks better than after a visit with her. She is simply the best,” says a happy customer named Jennifer. Can’t argue with that.
Antiques
AVONLEA ANTIQUES & INTERIORS Half of the fun of antique shopping is the search. Even if you are looking for a specific item, browsing the aisles, poking around the shelves and cabinets makes a trip to an antique mall an experience. Avonlea features a huge roster of permanent vendors selling a never-ending array of furniture, fine art, jewelry, home decor and collectables of every kind. Vintage comics, rare books, sports memorabilia—if you can slap a price tag on, it’s likely on sale here. There’s even a cozy cafe, the Full Circle Eatery, serving salads, avocado toast, BLT sandwiches and more. Open daily.
Bar Bites
RP’S FINE FOOD & DRINK Sometimes, all you want is to enjoy a good drink and some tasty shareables after work. Lucky for us, this Jax Beach staple more than delivers on both of these wishes. RP’s Fine Food & Drink offers a full lineup of scrumptious starters for both lunch and dinner, and a Happy Hour appetizer menu with a select number of dishes at a delectable price. Try one of their three different wing flavors, or give the fan-favorite cauliflower “wings” a shot, if you’re going meatless. Other bites include Billy’s Beach Dip (a creamy crab dip that has its fair share of raves on Yelp!) as well as pimento cheese, peel-and-eat shrimp and seared teriyaki tuna.
Bath Products
JONES & ROSE Looking to add to your ever-growing collection of natural bath and body care products? Well, lucky for you, Jones and Rose, located in the St. Johns Town Center, offers up everything from Honey Fig Sugar Scrub and Lemongrass Bar Soap to Mango Papaya Body Gloss and Dead Sea Mud Mask. Founded by Christie Jones Bird, who is on a mission to create indulgent, sensorial experiences while giving your skin a sexy and sultry glow, Jones and Rose is our readers’ go-to when shopping for body care products. You can even schedule a consultation with one of their beauty representatives, request mini samples or follow an online guide to find out what the best products are for your skin.
BEST HAIR COLORIST JAMIE RAY, RAY OF BLONDE
BBQ Brisket
THE BEARDED PIG Of all the various cuts of meat one can smoke, it’s the brisket that cannot, must not, don’t even think about rushing the process. Time is the best friend to an otherwise tough piece of beef. Low heat, somewhere in the 250-degree range, is another key to “Q” success. There are two Bearded Pigs in Jax—one in San Marco, the second out at Jax Beach. Both specialize is juicy BBQ, particularly brisket which can be savored by the half-pound for about $13. Add a side of baked beans and some greens… now you’re cooking.
BBQ Pulled Pork
Bed & Breakfast
Beer Selection
Here in the South, we take our barbecue seriously. We mean really, really seriously. Mojo BBQ accepted that challenge and practically perfected the game with their melt-in-your-mouth meat selections. With eight locations in North and Central Florida, you’re never too far from a Mojo. The pièce de resistance is their North Carolina pork—smoky, flavorful and downright mouthwatering. Order it pulled either on its own, as a sandwich or as part of the Whole Hawg experience. Slap some of their Alabama White Sauce on a forkful and you’ll be in hog heaven.
The Riverdale Inn is a true Jacksonville time capsule. Years ago, a string of great mansions lined Riverside Avenue. Today, only the Riverdale and her next-door neighbor remain standing. The inn features eleven guest rooms (pets welcome), an on-site honor bar, and cooked to order breakfast every morning. The grand house was built in 1901 but the complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and Tesla charging stations ensure guests are right at home in the 21st Century. Nearby Memorial Park is an ideal starting point to explore the neighborhood.
With more than 200 locations around the country, Mellow Mushroom has garnered a loyal following for its stone-baked pizza flavor combinations and for offering up some of the coldest craft beer, premium imports and local favorites. With a daily Happy Hour. 3-6 PM, Mellow is our reader’s favorite place when it comes to a diverse and wide-ranging beer selection. Whether you’re looking for a local brew like the Aardwolf Nonchalant or the Ancient City Augustine’s Orange Amber Ale or prefer to branch out to other areas of the good ol’ USA, like Bell’s Official Hazy IPA

Black Car Service
JAX BLACK CAR TRANSPORTATION Looking to arrive at the airport in style the next time you take a business trip to New York or that girl’s weekend to Las Vegas? Check out Jax Black Car Transportation’s fleet of luxury sedans, SUVs and executive vans. Our readers’ favorite way to get around town, they offer everything from secure ground transportation and advanced arrival teams to special event planning and on-call concierge services. Whether you plan on having a few too many whiskey sours, just hate driving or don’t want to leave your own car at the airport for an extended period of time, give Jax Black Car Transportation a call. James E. on Google said, “I discovered this service recently and have been very happy! Super professional and very dependable!”
Cakes
BISCOTTIS It’s easy to overlook the fact that the Avondale landmark serves a full menu of lunch and dinner favorites like pappardelle pasta, grilled filet mignon and garlic mashed potatoes. The glowing dessert case near the front door tends to distract diners upon entering. And for good reason, namely a roster of cakes including German chocolate, coconut, pink champagne, Oreo Mousse, white chocolate raspberry. Slices are big enough to share. Not that you have to.
Cheese & Caviar Selection JJ’S LIBERTY BISTRO
Since 1994, JJ’s has established itself as a fine dining destination in the heart of Ponte Vedra. Serving some of the finest traditional French fare in Northeast Florida, JJ’s strives to make each patron feel is if they had just dined in Paris. True to its European origins, the restaurant’s menu dons a dedicated cheese plate section, each option offering a variety of savory choices (and no, you won’t find any basic cheddar here). Caviar can be served as a standalone dish or with the lobster bisque. Featuring one of the largest wine selections in Northeast Florida, the eatery makes for the perfect backdrop for date night, anniversaries and any other celebration you can think of.
Cheesesteak
PHILLY’S FINEST
BEST DATE NIGHT ELEVEN SOUTH
When you call yourself Philly’s Finest, you better bring the Cheesesteak magic. For the love of Pat’s and Geno’s, they’ve been doing just that for two decades at the Jax Beach sandwich institution. American, mozzarella, and provolone cheeses, sautéed onions, mushrooms, pickles, sweet peppers, black olives, Cheese Whiz—each order can be customized to one’s liking for about $15. Order a side of the Old Bay fries, too.
Cigar Bar
ISLAND GIRL CIGAR BAR More than just a popular 1975 hit song by Elton John, Island Girl Cigar Bar is self-described as “the place to go if you like a great atmosphere, excellent and friendly staff and you love the smell of fabulous cigars.” And with six locations from which to choose, including Neptune Beach, Mayport and Downtown, it’s no wonder that Island Girl is our readers’ choice for tobacco and cocktails. Need even more reason to puff on a Monte Cristo while sipping on a bourbon? Wayne P. on Yelp said, “What can I say about this place? It’s exactly what you want in a cigar bar. Great drinks, great cigars.”
Cooking Classes
JAX COOKING STUDIO Are you tired of making the same pot of spaghetti week after week? Or maybe you’re looking to add a new dessert recipe to your repertoire? JAX Cooking Studio is here to help you learn how to make easy, delicious meals, snacks and so much more. IGUANA ON PARK Iguana on Park (appropriately-named for its location on Park Street in Riverside) has curated a menu that fuses all of the traditional flavors of Latin-American cuisine and became a neighborhood favorite almost as quickly as it opened. At the top of this eclectic menu is the guacamole and chips. Creamy, flavorful and with a kick of jalapeño, Iguana on Park’s take on this traditional starter is made fresh at the table and is the perfect precursor to a wildly delicious meal. Go ahead and add a dollop (or two) to your Baja fish taco. We know you want to.

Donuts
THE MINI BAR DONUTS One of the best indulgences on the planet is getting to eat a donut. The problem is that it’s hard to pick just one flavor. Do I want the chocolate frosted with rainbow sprinkles? Should I get a classic blueberry cake donut or what about a jelly donut oozing with raspberry goodness? Lucky for our readers, The Mini Bar Donuts + Coffee has four locations throughout the First Coast; two in Jax Beach, one on Deerwood Park Boulevard and one in Fleming Island. What makes Mini Bar so darn wonderful is that their donuts are a third of the size of regular donuts, so you can try more flavors the next time you indulge. Options include Maple Bacon, Lemon Poppy, Pop Tart, Fruity Pebbles, Mint Chocolate Chip, Cosmic Brownie, and so many more.
Dresses
H.E.R.S BOUTIQUE Self-described as a “humane and empowering retail shop for women, by women,” HERS on Durbin Pavilion Drive in Saint Johns is the perfect place to find a dress for everyday or for that next big event. The woman-owned boutique has a wide variety of dresses from button-up maxi shirt dresses and babydolls to crossed-back midis and pleated sleeve A-lines. It’s also affordable with most dresses ranging from $40-$60 by brands like THML Clothing, Grade & Gather, Flying Tomato and Ces Femme.
Facial
THE SPA AT PONTE VEDRA INN & CLUB With nearly a dozen different facials from which to choose, it’s easy to see why The Spa at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is the First Coast’s favorite place to smooth wrinkles and exfoliate dead skin cells. Check out The Collagen Ceremony, which utilizes photo luminescent diamond powder and pure native collagen to subdue the visible signs of aging. There’s also the Infusion Facial, which starts out with microdermabrasion treatment to prep your skin for specified serums to your skin type. Prefer something a little bit more old school? Opt for the Sea C Spa Facial, a powerful antioxidant treatment for photo-damaged skin that combines pure Vitamin C and seaweed to brighten the complexion and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Fine Jewelry
DIAMONDS DIRECT From a 30-day money back guarantee and lifetime warranty to free delivery and financing options, it’s easy to see why Diamonds Direct is Jacksonville’s favorite place to shop for fine jewelry. Located in the St. Johns Town Center and open every day except Sunday, the ‘Official Jeweler’ of the Jaguars (yes, that’s a thing) sells everything from engagement rings and wedding bands to diamond Cross pendants and a collection of

men’s watches like high-end designers like Blancpain, Franck Muller and Hublot. There’s also plenty of unique rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets in a variety of diamonds, gemstones and pearls.
Fish Sandwich
WHITEY’ S FISH CAMP A Jacksonville staple since 1963, Whitey’s is a traditional fish camp that offers water views, boat rentals, campground space and most importantly, a huge menu of seafood classics. Perhaps most notably, the famous fish sandwich. With lightly fried and perfectly flaky pollack, this signature sandwich is a go-to for new patrons and restaurant regulars. Not in the mood for a sandwich? Whitey’s menu is loaded with crowd favorites like Mahi tacos, shrimp scampi and locally caught gator tail.
French Fries
CRUISERS GRILL Serving up hot-off-the-grill burgers and hand-spun milkshakes since 1995, Cruisers in Jacksonville Beach makes the tastiest fries on the First Coast, say Jax Mag readers. With historians claiming potatoes were being fried as early as the late-1600s in Belgium, this crispy, salty, potato goodness that has garnered worldwide fame is a pretty big deal when it comes to naming the city’s “Best.” More than just opting for a size small or large, Cruisers also offers up aged cheddar fries with your choice of adding jalapeños and chives and/or house bacon. Looking to kick it up a notch? Try the house-made pimento cheese fries. Extra ketchup, please.
Fried Shrimp
SAFE HARBOR SEAFOOD Fresh, locally caught seafood is the calling card for Safe Harbor. That’s not surprising, as customers can practically see the shrimp boats of Mayport from the restaurant’s front door. It’s easy to see why hungry diners have been drifting here for years. Sure, the menu is laden with clams, oysters, crab cakes and other seafood standards, but sometimes a basket of fried shrimp, slaw, fries and hush puppies is a little slice of heaven.
Girls’ Night Out
PAINTING WITH A TWIST “Sick of the bar scene? Gather your best girls for an unforgettable night with paint, wine and lots of laughs.” So says the sales pitch at Painting With a Twist. And they are right. Private group outings are easy to arrange and all the art supplies and materials are included—brushes, paints and canvases will be waiting for you. You do have to bring the wine and/ or cocktails. Cakes, tailgate snacks and other eats are welcome, too. Best of all, you get to take your artwork home at night’s end.
Like with your therapist, neighborhood bartender or gynecologist, the relationship you have with your hair colorist is more than just someone who slaps dye on your hair and off you go. Finding the perfect shade of summer-kissed blonde or auburn ombre takes open communication and mutual-respect— something that Jamie Ray, owner and founder of Ray of Blonde in Jacksonville Beach, knows a thing or two about. Whether it’s keeping up-to-date with the latest lightening and toning techniques or adding to her guest’s experience through refreshments, snacks and a killer playlist, Jamie is a perfectionist.
Hair Extensions
KATIE TOTH, BELLEZZA SALON With an impressive background that includes taking multiple extension classes in Donna Bella, Bellami and Dreamcatchers and completing her certification in Hand Tied Wefts, Tapes-Ins and I-Tip Hair Extensions, it’s no wonder our reader’s go-to for hair extensions is Katie Toth at Belezza Salon. The Texas native now calls Florida home. Her favorite thing about working as a stylist and extension technician? Her bio on the Belezza Salon website says, “Meeting new people and making them feel beautiful.”
Health Club & Gym PURE BARRE
A total-body workout that transforms you physically and mentally, Pure Barre offers musically driven group classes focused on low-impact and high-intensity. With hundreds of locations around the country, including Riverside, St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, Julington Creek, Fleming Island, Jax Beach, Tapestry Park, San Marco and more, Pure Barre is inspired by yoga, Pilates and ballet. And it claims to strengthen and tone your entire body in 50 minutes or less, so really what could be better? They even offer a free class for first-timers, so check out Pure Barre, you couch potato, and start getting beach-ready!
Irish Pub
CULHANE’ S IRISH PUB With two locations on the First Coast, Atlantic Beach and Southside respectively, Culhane’s Irish Pub is your go-to when it comes to traditional Irish pub fare and pints that make you feel like you’re across the pond. Started in 2005 by a gaggle of sassy sisters from Limerick, Ireland, Culhane’s creates madefrom-scratch comfort food with many of the recipes straight from their mother Kitty’s kitchen. Featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, try the popular Guinness Beef Stew, Dingle Fish Pie and Blarney Lamb Sliders. Looking for something a bit lighter? Maybe vodka’s your thing. The sisters have created their own brand, 5 Sisters Spirit Vodka, a corn-based vodka crafted right here in the River City.
Italian Favorites
CAFFE ANDIAMO Caffe Andiamo, nestled within Sawgrass Village in Ponte Vedra Beach, complements traditional Italian cuisine with continental flavors to provide an intimate dining experience. With a copper wood-burning oven running nonstop, this family-run restaurant offers sizable dishes you’ll want to share—or not. Practice your pasta twirl with the Spaghettine Bolognese, a simple but delicious thin spaghetti dish tossed in a meat sauce, or explore new flavors with the Costata di Vitello Alla Milanese, a pounded veal chop breaded and panfried. Finish your meal off with some tiramisu or cannoli.

Martini
Inspiring excellence in young singers through a high-quality choral music education, the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus (JCC) was founded in 1995 at Jacksonville University to fill a need for a children’s music program in the area. Today, the chorus has grown to a membership of more than 350 singers participating in multiple choirs. There’s also an amazing educational component of JCC that offers up everything from Virtual Preschool Classes and the First Steps In Music program to Vocal Exploration and the River City Choral Festival & Day Camp experience.
Located on the Northeast corner of the Atlantic Beach Town Center and just steps from the beach, Ocean 60 is your go-to when it comes to ordering that iconic and classic cocktail, the martini. With more choices to make than just “vodka or gin?,” the martini menu at Ocean 60 has guests coming back time and time again. Sip on a Citrus Squeeze (citrus vodka, triple sec, fresh lemon and lime, sour mix, Sprite), a Hang Ten (vanilla vodka, coconut rum, pineapple juice) or a Peach Pit (vodka, Peach Schnapps, pineapple juice). And don’t forget about Happy Hour, Monday through Saturday, 5-7 PM. Bottoms up!
JACKSONVILLE CHILDREN’ S CHORUS
Lashes
LASH JAX With locations on the Southside and Jax Beach, LASH Jax is on a mission to inspire you to “discover your unique beauty, beauty that is much deeper than the surface of the skin.” With a team of licensed estheticians, LASH Jax offers up a wide range of services like new eyelashes, brow lamination and tint, ombre powder brows, microblading, waxing and facials. Lauren T. on Google said, “I received my first ever lash extensions from Heather at the Tapestry Park location. I am in LOVE! She answered all the questions I had and my lashes are beautiful!” Not sure which indulgence to choose? Check out LASH Jax’s three service deal for $99.
Live Music / Concerts FLORIDA THEATRE
Since the day it opened in the spring of 1927, the Florida Theatre has been a local landmark and treat for the senses. The interior is both grand and intimate at the same time, with space for some 1,800 patrons sitting under a soaring ceiling adorned with hand-painted decoration. From ballet recitals to country concerts to school graduations, if it is presented with an audience in attendance, there’s a good chance it has taken place here. Highlights of the upcoming performance schedule include David Spade on June 12, Andy Grammer on June 22 and Brian McKnight on July 14.
Local Legend AQUA GRILL
Boasting an “eclectic fare and coastal flair,” Aqua Grill is a contemporary restaurant concept located lakeside in the Sawgrass Village Shopping Center. This Ponte Vedra Beach classic is a local favorite for all the best reasons. From their welcoming, upscale interior to their multi-ethnic menu, Aqua Grill has the atmosphere and cuisine perfect for your lunch break, dinner date or weekend stop. Menus are updated daily to feature the freshest ingredients to curate dishes like Mayport shrimp quesadilla, tempura flounder BLT with pan-seared flounder and Maryland crab ravioli.
Margarita
FLYING IGUANA The history of the margarita is a bit muddled, but one story claims that the drink was created in 1938 when Mexican restaurant owner Carlos “Danny” Herrera mixed it up for a beautiful showgirl named Marjorie King. Tequila was the only alcohol she would drink, so Danny added lime juice and salt. However, it came to be, the margarita is a classic cocktail that has become a staple around Northeast Florida. And when it comes to ordering this sweet and sour sipper, Flying Iguana Taqueria & Tequila Bar is our reader’s go-to place. With over 100 tequilas to choose from, house made sour mix and fresh squeezed juices, it’s no wonder Flying Iguana in Neptune Beach is a perennial winner in this category.
Margherita Pizza TAVERNA
The family-owned restaurant Taverna lies at the heart of San Marco Square. The heart of its Mediterraneaninspired menu is the pizza oven, a fiery hot spot where fresh-made dough, cheese, roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions, Italian sausage and more are transformed into edible pieces of art. The traditional margherita with fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil is delicious simplicity on a plate.

Men’s Casual Clothing BEAU OUTFITTERS
There’s a fine line between dressing like a Florida Man and dressing like a well-dressed Florida Man. If you’re looking for the latter, Beau Outfitters on San Marco Boulevard is your place for upscale marlin-patterned swim trunks, mermaid boxer briefs, palm frond button-down sport shirts and five-pocket sateen twill pants perfect for the golf course or the clubhouse. You’ll be the best dressed Florida Man at the next oyster roast or cornhole tournament!
Men’s Fine Clothing ROSENBLUM’ S
The term “bespoke” means made based on the specifications of the person ordering it. In a world where mass production and instant-gratification is at the forefront of fashion, bespoke clothiers like Rosenblum’s offer its customers a truly one-of-a-kind experience where patience is key and individuality is an order. A Jacksonville icon since 1898, Rosenblum’s staff works one-on-one with its customers to take down measurements, pick out fabrics and craft shirts and suits using traditional tailoring methods. They also offer high-end, ready-to-wear brands like Coppley, Maurizio Baldassari and Alan Paine, to name a few.

With locations on Blanding Boulevard and Bowden Road, Raw Cuts Barbershop is the place to go for a fresh fade, clean cut, intricate buzz design, expert beard trim, close shave or anything in between. They even have their own App to help make scheduling a breeze. But don’t take our word for it, “I can honestly say this is the absolute best place for a haircut. My husband and son love this place! Mark2Fresh is always hooking my guys up with a clean Fade or Taper. Will not disappoint!” says Amber D. on Yelp.
Microblading & Permanent Makeup LUXX BEAUTY & BROW BAR
Sick of spending time each morning making your eyebrows pop? From brow gels and pencils, old school techniques are falling by the wayside. These days, microblading is taking over as the way to enhance one’s eyebrows by adding semi-permanent pigment to the skin through a unique tattooing technique. And when
it comes to microblading around the First Coast, our readers are heading to Luxx Beauty & Brow Bar on Old Kings Road South. “Absolutely love my brows!” said Kimby Y. on Google. “As someone who has always hated their eyebrows, I was super impressed with how they mapped my face, took my thoughts into consideration and explained each step as it happened.”
New Restaurant O-KU SUSHI
With more than a half-dozen locations from Nashville to Charleston, O-Ku Sushi is the First Coast’s favorite new restaurant with a spanking new location on 1st Street North in Jax Beach. O-Ku offers upscale Japanese cuisine, a rooftop bar and patio and only the finest seafood from fish markets in Tokyo, Hawaii and here locally. Check out the chef specialties and small plates like tuna crudo, Agedashi tofu and O-Ku rock shrimp or just go straight for the rolls including Neptune’s Beard (shrimp tempura, avocado, spicy tuna, salmon, spicy aioli, sweet soy, chive) and the Firecracker (crispy panko fried roll with spicy salmon, avocado, cucumber, goat cheese mousse, sweet soy).
New Salon
RAY OF BLONDE After 16 years in the hair and beauty industry, local stylist Jamie Ray decided to branch out and open up her own establishment in Jacksonville Beach. Ray of Blonde Salon is our reader’s favorite new salon on the First Coast for cut, color, community and everything in between. “At Ray of Blonde, we celebrate kindness,” says Jamie. “We do more than color your hair, we offer a welcoming community of women who lift each other up.” With multiple stylists to choose from, Ray of Blonde offers up everything from full color and partial highlights to hand-tied extensions and a Curly “Diva” dry cut with style.
Old Fashioned
MOJO BAR-B-QUE There are variations on the recipe for a classic Old Fashioned, but they all must contain bourbon, bitters, a dash of sugar, and ice. Add a cherry or orange slice as a garnish to make it fancy, if you wish. The bourbon is the key, and few establishments in town have a better selection of spirits than Mojo, where the house Old Fashioned is crafted with Four Roses bourbon, Angostura bitters, and raw brown sugar. It’s a timeless classic. How about an order of burnt ends to go with it?

Whether you like them raw and on the half-shell, roasted with jalapeño cheddar or simply steamed and delivered in a bucket for you to shuck yourself, oysters are no doubt a fun Florida culinary experience. And for those of you looking to add oysters to your dining dance card, The Fish Company in Atlantic Beach is the place to go. Founded in 2006 by Chef Bill and Anne Pinner, the eatery is a self-described “first-class seafood restaurant with a casual beach attitude.” We just call it yummy. Order a round of oyster shooters and a fried oysters appetizer for the table. You’ll be glad you did.

SALT LIFE FOOD SHACK
“Poke” means diced raw fish and is served with a collection of rice and different fruits and vegetables. The next time you’re at one of three Salt Life Food Shack locations (Jacksonville Beach, St. Augustine Beach
and Fernandina Beach), try Caliche’s Poke Bowl with sushi grade ahi tuna seasoned with a secret marinade and served with steamed spinach and diced avocado and green onion over sticky rice and then topped with sesame seeds. Or if you’re looking for something a bit more traditional, try the Spicy Poke Bowl with sesame seared tuna, cucumbers, avocado, steamed spinach and pickled onions and bell peppers. Either way, you really can’t go wrong.
Prepared Foods
GREGORY PAUL’S
In late April, you could have been enjoying shrimp, scallop and sausage Scarpa Riello over rigatoni pasta, sautéed chicken breast topped with crabmeat, asparagus and provolone cheese, and honey-glazed meatloaf—and best of all, someone else could have done on the cooking. Gregory Paul’s is a Beaches culinary institution, a chef-run catering and prepared meals service that serves everything from Asian lettuce wraps to peanut butter spiced cookies. Chef Rider’s menu changes weekly. Stop by or give them a call to place an order.

The iconic par-3 17th on the Players Stadium Course is one of the most recognizable holes on the planet. The Island Green is loved and feared and the lake that surrounds the hole has swallowed thousands of errant shots over four decades. Sushi
The cozy Taqueria Cinco on Lomax Street proves that very good things do come in small packages. Sometime even hand-held size. The list of a dozen tacos is the primary lure for regulars, but the smashed avocado guacamole and Mexican street corn bathed in mayo, cotija cheese and chili-lime spice have plenty of fans, too. Creativity from the kitchen shines through with unusual taco choices such as the Nopales with grilled cactus, squash, tomatoes and salsa, and the ribeye “Cecina” with salt and lime-cured beef, charred onions, and salsa arbol. Don’t forget a side of black beans and rice.
As well as being named “Best New Restaurant” by our readers, O-Ku Sushi has also grabbed the top prize for “Best Sushi.” Self-described as “authentic Asian cuisine with a menu that focuses on unique ingredients and sophisticated presentations.” Love nigiri or sashimi? Lucky for you, there’s a laundry list of fresh fish including lean red tuna, blue fin tuna, salmon, red sea bream and mackerel. Prefer sushi? Try some of the chef’s specialties like the Jaguar (shrimp tempura, avocado, unagi, cucumber, eel sauce, black pepper).

Taaaaccccccooooooooooosssssssss! Easily one of Florida’s favorite foods, it’s extremely stiff competition around these parts for who will be named “Best” in Northeast Florida. Located on Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach, our readers have spoken and TacoLu is their most-loved spot. Try the $10 Taco with filet mignon, jack cheese, pico de gallo and more or really get out of your comfort zone and order up he Carne Royale with carne asada, brie and grape salsa. Prefer that your tacos come from the sea? Opt for the Taco Rosa with seared Ahi tuna, cabbage, cucumber-avocado salsa, ponzu and wasabi soy crema or the blackened mahi with cabbage, mango salsa and chipotle crema.
Summer Camps
Tennis Facilities
Tommy Hulihan is something of a coaching legend around these parts. He was an all-star player back in his Fletcher High days and has been walking the hardwood of area gyms for a quarter-century. Week-long sessions are open to kids as young as second graders, where the sport’s fundamentals are emphasized, along with team drills and practice games. Who’s got next?
