ON THE RUN THE HEAT OF THE SUMMER DOES LITTLE TO PUT A chill on the Northeast Florida fundraising running scene. A variety of 5K races are staged on most weekends throughout the year and the calendar continues in July with a pair of races benefitting area healthcare organizations and charitable causes. For example, it is estimated that more than 21,000 people on the First Coast are impacted each day because of autism. The Friends With Autism 5K, set for July 9, benefits Northeast Florida families, people on the autism spectrum and schools, by helping fund grants and other forms of assistance. Entry fees are $30-$35 ($10-$20 for the 1-mile fun run). The 5K starts at 8 AM at 1090 Kings Ave. The race calendar rolls on with the annual Vestcor 5K Bridges Run on July 23. Participants start in the shadow of the Prime Osborn Convention Center before winding through Downtown and crossing the St. Johns River twice. After the race, runners enjoy complimentary eats, beer and live music. Money raised benefits various area non-profits including UF Health Jacksonville and North Florida School of Special Education. This one’s an evening race, with a start time of 7 PM. Entry fees start at $30 through July 16, rising to $40 on race day. ✚

The renovations on Blair and James Landry’s five-bedroom, 4.5bath home were completed in the summer of 2019. Wishing to remain in their south Jax Beach neighborhood was the primary reason for taking on the 18-month project. “We knew we wanted to expand the family and, above all, create a great energy and space for the kids to thrive and be part of the conversation in an open living space that integrated the kitchen, outdoor dining, the pool and entertainment space outdoors,” says James. “We love to cook with friends and family and having an open kitchen that was chef-worthy was a must-have. Open space with indirect light was also a must. It completely changes the energy of the living space vs. more traditional walled off layouts.” The Landry’s owned two contiguous lots, which enabled them to combine the properties into one to accommodate the home design they wanted. “The concept was a linear gallery with ample natural light and open spaces to the outside and integrating the outside and inside as a single canvass,” says James. “The glass sitting room—the garden room—now serving as a kid’s playroom has gardens on both sides.
