Al spent years perfecting his pizza since immigrating to America in 1978, opening his first pizzeria in Jacksonville in 1988. Today, he stays committed to using fresh ingredients and still handmakes pizza dough every day. While fresh ingredients and New York traditions are the cornerstone of Al’s, newcomers are often drawn in by the restaurant’s sleek look and contemporary appeal. Whether feasting with the family, picking up a slice for yourself or having one of our expert delivery drivers bring their restaurant fare to your living room, Al’s Pizza is there for you. Diners enjoy a classic slice, customized with whatever toppings their heart desires. They also offer subs, salads, and entrées like lasagna and chicken parmigiana. For dessert, make sure to try the zeppolis, a New York street fare favorite of lightly fried dough coated in powdered sugar with a sweet raspberry dipping sauce.

Tucked on a quiet side street in Jacksonville Beach, this gem is a go-to for fine dining at the Beaches. The setting is nearly perfect for one-on-one meals (we love the secluded patio for alfresco dinners on comfortable evenings) but it’s really the food that keeps locals and visitors coming back for over 20 years. Start with a sampling of grilled Spanish octopus ($16), dive into tuna tartare with crispy wontons ($16), and finish with the local flounder, served atop warm orzo, sweet corn, sun dried tomato, edamame and Vidalia onions, sauteed kale, bell pepper-saffron jam and basil pesto. ($31). Oenophiles will appreciate the attention to detail—all servers are well-versed on wine pairings and selections run the gamut starting at $38 a bottle to a wide selection of $1,000 per bottle and up. Socialites will appreciate the lively bar. Perfect for date night, cocktails at the bar and apps on the patio.

Florida’s bay scallop season along the Big Bend opened in June and runs through September 24. While each county in the region has a specific harvesting calendar, July and August are peak season for much of the coast. In an effort to assist recreational scallopers, the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences has created a new scalloping sorting tool. The free tool is a simple orange acrylic square featuring a two-inch diameter hole and a blue wristband. By comparing a scallop shell to the hole, harvesters can determine whether the size of their catch complies with sustainable practices.
“Larger scallops have already reproduced, ensuring the next generation of scallops, which helps maintain a stable population,” says Victor Blanco, a Taylor County Extension agent with UF/IFAS. “Measuring scallop size ensures future harvests remain abundant, benefitting the long-term viability of the scallop fishery.”

The next night is the Vilano A1A Soiree featuring gourmet bites from favorite local restaurants and beer, wine and spirits tastings. The main event, the W3 Grand Tasting, takes place Saturday afternoon and includes two dozen vendors serving delish eats and drinks, cooking demonstrations, live music and wildlife demonstrations. Although the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission does not mandate that scallops reach a certain size before harvesting, the commission does limit how many a person may collect in a day. Bay scallops live for about 18 months and the animal’s peak reproduction period takes place during the fall, after harvest season.
“For harvesters, targeting larger scallops means better quality and more meat to enjoy, as larger scallops are generally more desirable for consumers,” Blanco says. “By preserving smaller scallops, harvesters help secure the ecosystem’s health and their own future, balancing immediate enjoyment with long-term resource availability.” u

There is nothing better than a great Saturday adventure.

If you’re in need of a sunshine-filled, feel-good getaway, grab a favorite floppy hat, some sunglasses and hit The St. Augustine Amphitheatre’s Farmer’s Market this weekend. This field trip is a hop skip and a jump away from Jacksonville, and is equal parts farm stand, Bo-Ho bazaar, food hall, art show and festival.
Nestled under a canopy of beautiful moss draped oaks, it’s a free-spirited, hip and downright charming take on an old school weekend market. Bring your own bag and be prepared to load up on locally grown farm-to-stand fruits, veggies and much more.
On our visit, heirloom tomatoes, corn, blueberries, and eggplant were the seasonal stand outs. You also won’t need to charm any bees to walk away with delicious hive-to-jar raw St. Augustine honey.
Looking for something beautiful for that next Instagram post or to brighten your home? Take a few minutes to check out the flower stalls. You can choose from a variety of gorgeous buds to build your own bouquet and you will not be able miss the fabulous sunflowers. As the old Rogers & Hammerstein standard goes, “they are as high as an elephant’s eye!”
Vendor stands are also filled with artisanal crafts that have a distinctively Floridian vibe. Find beautiful jewelry, pottery, handmade beach bags, paintings, and sundresses all with a coastal feel. Take home soaps with super fun names like Coconut Lime & Summer Nights and watch as they are cut straight off the block. We loved the beautifully crafted cypress wood pieces that would be perfect in any beach, lake, or river house.
Make sure you come with an appetite, the market is filled with sweet and savory pies, homemade pastries, freshly squeezed juices, Mexican favorites, and a variety of cold brews and lattes. End your trip listening to live music in the shady spot known as The Plaza. We wrapped up our visit listening to live bluegrass and sipping ice-cold lemonade.

Created by Amelia Islander Amy Davis, Sol Squeeze brings a new twist on classic cocktails. The ready-to-use cocktail mixers use all natural ingredients for its line of products designed for the home bartender. “The intent was to mimic how you would create a fresh cocktail at home, but without all the work,” Davis says. Sol Squeeze focuses on tequila-based cocktails such as margaritas, but they also produce mixers for mango mojitos, palomas, frozen margarita slushies, and mango mule mocktails. The bright and flavorful packages are awash in organic cane sugar, lime, lemon and orange juice and other tropical flavors, and each pouch makes two cocktails. Recipes for each mixer are provided on the company’s website. A night at a Jax Jumbo Shrimp game offers considerably more than hot dogs, peanuts and Cracker Jacks
TThe sun is shining, skies are clear and it’s time for Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp baseball. Before you settle in to enjoy the game, there are undiscovered and tasty treasures to be explored. Starting from the outer reaches of left field, rounding home plate, and then all the way to the edge of right field, you may be pleasantly surprised by this epicurean tour through a minor league baseball stadium.
If you’re a fan of pre-game activities and movies like Bull Durham and A Field of Dreams, you’ll want to arrive as soon as the gates open, then head out beyond the left field fence. This is where one finds the thatchedroof Tiki Terrace, a full-service bar with a panoramic view of the grass and stadium. While it’s a great place to get primed, and you could stay and watch the entire game, the action on the field is hard to see from here. Better seats can be had.
On your way to your seats, stop off at the Craft Cave on the ground level just opposite third base. This is the only spot where fans find a selection of local craft beers. It’s also the one place to order a Mac and Cheese Waffle Bowl served with pulled pork, arguably one of the best snacks in the park. The Frito Pie, considered a “walking taco,” is another treat exclusive to this concession.
Next, head up to the concourse level and visit Sweet TeaBows. For those who believe a proper meal always starts with dessert, this is the only place to enjoy a Churro Sundae— vanilla soft serve ice cream swirled with chocolate, accompanied by two sugary churros topped with caramel. This cool and creamy indulgence hits it outta the park.
A night at a baseball game is never complete without a hot dog and a cold beer. While they are widely available throughout the park, walk a few steps further towards home plate and belly up to The Dog House. Along with foot-longs, fans can partake in grilled brats, Polish and Italian sausages and smoked turkey legs. The main event is the two-foot smoked sausage known as the “Slugger.” Served with grilled onions and peppers or kraut, one bite into this monster and you’ll know you’ve scored.

Of course, you can’t have a team named the Jumbo Shrimp without a crustacean or two on the menu. Served exclusively at Southern Fried Freebird, there’s a coconut shrimp basket, shrimp po’ boy and the “Boom Boom” shrimp—the latter featuring popcorn shrimp tossed in a zesty sauce and served in an edible waffle bowl. Yes, please.
As one wanders past home plate and around towards right field, you will come upon All American Jax offering many ballpark favorites. The Duval Heavy Hitter is one to remember. A souvenir baseball helmet filled with chicken tenders, fries, nacho cheese, bacon and green onions, this dish is plenty big enough to share. The fried cheesecake, looking a bit like a fried wonton, isn’t too shabby either.
Heading all the way into the right field stands, Sunshine Sandbar
is the end of the line. It’s worth the walk for its assortment of quesadillas, their own version of a “walking taco” served in an open bag of Doritos topped with seasoned pork, lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream. Or treat yourself to the Sandbar Sundae draped with vanilla soft serve ice cream, blue sprinkles, crushed graham crackers and shark Gummie candies.
Unless your seats are on the Bold City Balcony, you may miss out on one of 121 Financial Field’s best kept secrets. Open to the public, the Wheelhouse Lounge is a glass-fronted, air conditioned, full-service bar and restaurant with a great view of home plate. Their menu features plenty of stadium standards, as well as a few specials including an Italian sausage burger, buffalo bleu loaded chips, grilled shrimp salad, and fried avocado tacos. Everything’s made to order and packed to go
When it comes time for the seventh inning stretch, delight in the crowd’s rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” proclaiming an enduring love of peanuts and Cracker Jack. There’s nothing wrong with classic baseball eats. However, today’s fans may be better off cheering “let’s eat!” instead of a cry to “play ball.” u
