Little Spice to Your Life
Blue Orchid focuses on offering a taste of Thailand, utilizing traditional ingredients such as palm sugar, Thai basil, and kaffir lime leaves. This Intracoastal West spot (tucked into a shopping center anchored by The Fresh Market) is a local go-to for good Thai food with an upscale ambiance, but it’s worth a drive even if you don’t live in the area. It’s arguably the best option in town for pad Thai, but the real must-order dish is the honey duck, served on a bed of vegetables with a house-made, highly addictive honey sauce. Order a basil fried rice for the table, try any one of the house-made curries and wash it all down with a spiked Thai coffee “Kee Mow.”

Eleven South
Tucked on a quiet side street in Jacksonville Beach, this gem is a go-to for fine dining at the Beaches. The setting is nearly perfect for one-on-one meals (we love the secluded patio for alfresco dinner on warm evenings) but it’s really the food that keeps locals coming back. Start with a sampling of grilled Spanish octopus ($16), dive into tuna tartare with crispy wontons ($16), and finish with the local flounder, served atop warm orzo, sweet corn, edamame and Vidalia onions ($32). Oenophiles will appreciate the attention to detail—all servers are well-versed on wine pairings and selections run the gamut starting at $32 a bottle to a wide selection of $1,000 per bottle and up. Perfect for date night, cocktails at the bar and apps on the patio.

Grassroots Natural Market
Daily Grind
Americans drink millions of gallons of coffee every day. Among them is Jax native Eun Cho, a local businessman who enjoys a good cup of Joe more than most. With such regular and prolific consumption, Cho saw an opportunity to launch his own brand of beverage, something he and his partners did in 2021 Haymaker Coffee Co. “To make a dent in the coffee industry, you gotta take some big swings,” says Cho. Dreaming a little doesn’t hurt, either. Those swings started small, with Haymaker hosting a series of pop-up shops and taking part in various events around Northeast Florida. Over time, and with lots of roasting (in a 100-year-old roaster), grinding, packaging, knocking on doors and sweat equity, the little company grew large enough to invest in a mobile cafe-like truck. Today, Haymaker makes a diverse line of products ranging from flavored blends (caramel toasted pecan and French vanilla, among others) to coffees aged in bourbon and rum barrels. The finished products are sold online, via a subscription service, on the campus of Jacksonville University and at the occasional special event.

In addition, there are master cooking classes, a Sunday morning jazz brunch and the Main Event, a grand tasting where hundreds of top shelf wines and spirits can be sampled along with dishes prepared by some two dozen local restaurants. Inspired by the classic Werther’s Original hard candy, Duke & Dame ($28 per 750mL bottle) came to be. “We wanted it to be a whiskey first,” says Burey. “A whiskey that happens to have this amazing aroma and caramel flavor. But, first and foremost, it needed to be a whiskey.” The brand is distributed throughout Florida including 60 Walmart locations, at the Walt Disney World Dolphin and Swan resort hotels, Florida Panther hockey games and Royal Caribbean cruise ships. u

Check out their brunch offerings Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10 am and pair sweet and savory classic brunch fare like biscuits and gravy, strawberries and cream waffles and omelets with bottomless Mimosas or the infamous Ultimate Amelia Island Bloody Mary – piled high with wings, shrimp, bacon, beignets, and olives. The Sandbar is also open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
FERNANDINA BEACH
Just steps from the beach is Slider’s Seaside Grill, an oceanfront oasis offering up live music and classic seafood dishes like crab topped flounder, shrimp and grits and Ahi tuna tacos. With a Caribbean theme, pull up a swing at Sliders’ outdoor bar and sip on a tropical cocktail like a Painkiller, Goombay Smash or a Rum Runner. You’ll feel like you’re in The Bahamas with the brightly colored décor and beach vibe. There’s also a sandbox with slides for the kiddos and, if you’re looking for a different type of island cuisine, check out Tortuga Jacks, a Baja Mexican joint that recently opened on the second floor of Sliders.
A favorite local spot since 1957, The Surf Restaurant & Bar is located next door to its sister business, The Surf Beach Motel, and has been welcoming wave seekers for nearly 70 years. After a long day at the beach, feast on breaded calamari served with a sweet Thai chili dipping sauce or crispy shrimp street tacos with roasted corn salsa and Sriracha lime aioli. There are also tons of options for handhelds (chipotle chicken cheese steak, anyone?), burgers (don’t pass up the Drunken Pirate Burger) and platters like the buttermilk fried chicken plate tossed in Carolina Gold BBQ.
MAYPORT
Just south of Little Talbot Island on Fort George Island is Sandollar Restaurant, a waterfront eatery that’s been said to be the best place in the area to feast on Mayport shrimp. With a history dating back to 1954, this North Florida icon continues its tradition of “serving fresh and local seafood at local costs.” Choose from fresh oysters by the dozen, a blackened Redfish sandwich, or sautéed clams seasoned with Old Bay. Make sure to also check out their killer Happy Hour with half-price well liquors, domestic beer and house wines, Monday through Friday, 2-6 pm.
ATLANTIC BEACH
Opened in 2013 and located on Sailfish Drive, Two Dudes Seafood Restaurant is a family-owned seafood joint with a chill surfer vibe. Try the crab mango quesadilla served with mango salsa or The Hodaddy, a behemoth one-pound ground chuck burger with all the fixings. There are also the oyster tacos— deep-fried fresh oysters tucked inside flour tortillas with mango wasabi slaw, as well as calamari tacos, seafood cobb salad and tropical shrimp salad. Hungry yet?
NEPTUNE BEACH
Looking for a lively beach bar with amazing ocean views and some of the best frozen drinks in town? Look no further than Lemon Bar & Grille. Located in the Seahorse Oceanfront Inn courtyard, Lemon Bar has been around for nearly 20 years and offers up frosty concoctions like the Orange Dream, Bahama Mama (half Planters Punch and half Piña Colada) or the restaurant’s signature drink, Lemon Bar Freeze made with vodka and a lemon ice cream mix. Soak up the booze with Lemon Bar’s food menu featuring classic American fare like a Buffalo chicken wrap, fish fingers, and Boom Boom shrimp tacos.
After an extensive remodel last year, Sliders Oyster Bar is still serving everyone’s favorite dishes, but with an updated and more colorful look. With a promise of seafood “served straight from the boat to your plate,” Sliders features beachside fare like seasonal ceviche, steamed and raw offerings from the oyster bar, peel ‘n eat Mayport shrimp, steamed clams, deviled crabs and more. They also have a full bar, so craft cocktails are at the forefront with summer sippers like cucumber citrus martini, pineapple slider and coconut crusher on offer. Located on First Street, Sliders is open seven days a week, but they don’t take reservations, so don’t arrive hangry.
JACKSONVILLE BEACH
With breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and just a few steps from the beach, it’s no wonder Tides Beach Bar & Grille is giving off those laid-back vibes to everyone who visits. This unassuming outdoor eatery is located poolside at the Hampton Inn Jacksonville Beach and features a menu chock-full of beachside cuisine such as conch fritters, fried shrimp basket and crab cakes. And, of course, who can forget the poolside sippers like an Elderflower Smash, Watermelon Collins and Skinny Paloma. So, grab a bar stool, sidle up and enjoy some hardcore relaxing.
Located on 3rd Street South, Grom is touted as a “colorful, quirky sandwich joint whipping up creative, oven-baked sandwiches and Latin street eats.” We just call it darn delicious. For the early risers, the breakfast menu boasts everything from honey butter chicken biscuits to biscuits and gravy to avocado toast. There’s also the Breakfast Samoan with fried chicken, scrambled eggs, cheese, homies and Samoan sauce. If you’re looking for a post-surf munch, the handhelds are legendary. You can’t go wrong with the East Coast Club or The Hammered Pig (fried pork loin sandwich with homemade garlic herb aioli, slaw and pickles).
PONTE VEDRA BEACH
Though it’s located on a small pond at the Shoppes of Veranda, Pusser’s Bar and Grille still gives off that island time vibe we’re all searching for. Offering local seafood and a wide selection of tropical drinks including the world famous Pusser’s Painkiller, The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a popular Happy Hour. Monday through Friday, 3-7 pm, take $1 off all draft beers, house wines and premium cocktails. Also check out their extensive Caribbean-inspired menu featuring coconut rum shrimp, St. Lucia Seafood Pasta and Ahi tuna tacos.
ST. AUGUSTINE
With grass-roofed tiki hut tables dangling over the water, brightly colored décor and a full-service marina on-property, The Conch House Restaurant, located just south of the Bridge of Lions, is one of the area’s most popular eateries for both tourists and locals alike. Order up the banana pepper calamari to share with the table and then butter-rum scallops for your entrée. Finish your time at The Conch House by heading to the bar at the end of the dock and order up a Goombay Smash (or two) while watching the fishermen weigh and clean their daily catch.
VILANO BEACH
One of the only oceanfront restaurants in the St. Augustine area, The Reef is located in tranquil North Beach just three miles north of the Usina Bridge. Originally called Comptons, the restaurant opened in 1989 and was later renovated and renamed The Reef in 2002. Today, Chef Denzel Aponte creates a diverse range of dishes from chorizo empanadas and saffron mussels to shrimp and lobster risotto and jumbo scallops with potato gnocchi. The restaurant’s popular Sunday brunch offers up savory and sweet dishes like Crab Florentine Benedict, chicken and waffles and a Creole omelet with jambalaya sauce.
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of downtown St. Augustine is Beaches at Vilano, a laidback eatery overlooking the Tolomato River. Touted as a “little vacation spot right in our hometown where you can relax and enjoy a ‘no worries’ Caribbean island atmosphere,” Beaches at Vilano offers a seafood-heavy menu complete with clam strips, fish dip, Minorcan conch chowder and snow crab legs. So, order a Beach-A-Rita with tequila, fresh-squeeze lime juice and agave nectar as you dig your toes in the sand and watch the sailboats go by.
ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH
In 1990, Pete Darios and Mike Rosa made their way to St. Augustine Beach via New York with lofty goals of opening a restaurant. More than 30 years later and Sunset Grille remains one of the area’s most popular beachside dining spots. Open six days a week for lunch and dinner (they’re closed on Tuesdays), Sunset Grille offers dishes like their signature Sunset Oysters topped with spinach, artichokes, crabmeat and three cheeses, then broiled. There’s also Minorcan datil shrimp, macadamia crusted MahiMahi and the best wings in town.
The only restaurant located directly adjacent to the ocean in St. Augustine Beach, Beachcomber St. Augustine is not only a great place for tasty food and cold cocktails, but also ‘people watching.’ The eatery is located at the end of A Street where cars drive onto the beach, so there are always plenty of characters to keep you entertained. Munch on the smoked fish dip served with fried pita points and then take on the angry crab—a fried crab cake served on an artisan roll with jack cheese and Key lime datil tartar sauce. And do yourself a favor and check out their extensive list of original craft cocktails using fresh ingredients and tropical flavors. u

INGREDIENTS
1/4 small cantaloupe
1 cup milk
1/2 banana

Strawberry Frozen Yogurt Squares

1 cup fat-free sweetened condensed milk
1 cup light or fat-free whipped topping (optional)
2. Place yogurt, strawberries, and condensed milk in a blender; cover and blend until smooth.
3. Pour the mixture over top of cereal, gently smoothing yogurt mixture to edges of pan.
4. Cover with foil (or plastic wrap) and freeze for 8 hours or until firm. Use edges of foil to loosen and remove from pan; let recipe thaw for 5 to 10 minutes.
5. Cut into squares, top with whipped topping if desired, and serve.

BEST Sundae JAX
Summertime is the ideal season to join us on a trip through Northeast Florida’s cool and delicious menagerie of ice cream shops, popsicles and other tasty and chilly eats.
BY FABRIZIO GOWDYWaffle Cone
Recently opened in Five Points, Waffle Cone seeks to foster a nostalgic ice cream experience for customers. The warm lighting and cozy interior design married with vintage photos and decor help create a traditional and charming ice cream parlor vibe. Owned and operated by Jax natives, the shop sells sundaes and shakes, hand-dipped chocolate cones, and house-made cones. The shop serves classic flavors as well as their specialty scoops like red velvet, dulce de leche, and cappuccino chip. If you have a hard time making up your mind, you can order an ice cream flight consisting of six half scoops. 822 Post St., Riverside
Dreamette
A roundup of Northeast Florida’s ice cream scene simply wouldn’t be complete without Dreamette. The shop’s family-friendly prices and uber casual setting have made it a local classic and a staple for frozen treats since 1948. You won’t be disappointed by Dreamette’s serving sizes either—when the pick-up window slides open, you’re greeted by a spiral of softserve that towers over its cup or cone. When ordering soft serve or a shake, a “small” is what the other guys call a medium or large. Whether it’s a post-dinner dessert run or a midday stop to beat the withering summer heat, Dreamette hits the spot. Two new locations opened in 2022, and each has a few menu items unique to their location. The Springfield location sells bread pudding sundaes, while coffee
lovers can indulge in an affogato (hot espresso poured over ice cream) at the San Marco shop. Multiple locations
Mayday Ice Cream
Mayday’s homemade recipes include creative flavors like blueberry toast crunch and ice box lemon, as well as creatively named scoops like the Parent Trap and Cloud 9. Customers can choose from the list of year-round traditional flavors or from a rotating seasonal menu. Mayday’s waffle cones and sprinkles are made in house, and the sprinkles are always free. Mayday sells pints of ice cream and sorbet on their website with flavors such as lavender mélange, passionfruit golden milk, and strawberry mint sorbet. If you like to be sur prised, Mayday even lets you order a random pint—you won’t know what flavor you got until it arrives at your door. The shop’s name honors the innovative American pilots who strapped buckets full of cream and sugar into their planes during World War II, which would turn into ice cream while on missions because of the freezing temperature at the high altitudes in which they flew. Multiple locations
Mox Ice Cream
Mox Ice Cream makes its soft-serve from a five-ingredient recipe that includes vanilla extract with vanilla bean specks and Belgian coco. Also, Mox only uses sustainably sourced milk from dairies with a zero-carbon footprint. In addition, the shop distinguishes itself by importing foreign toppings like dulce de leche, a rich South American caramel alternative, and Feuilletine crepe flakes from France, and Maldon sea salt from England. The Canadian toffee bits are pretty tasty, too. Founder Evan Major describes his ice cream shop as “Starbucks meets Dairy Queen with a European flair.” We just call it delicious. Other interesting top-
pings include pop rox, pretzel pearls, strawberry magic dust, and chocolate magic shell.
Mox’s menu now includes milkshake options and dairy-free soft serve sorbet made from seasonal fruits. Mox’s most unique menu item might be their “luv buns:” soft serve snuggled in a warm brioche bun. 4070 Herschel St., Riverside
Paleteria
Magia Fresca
At the height of the pandemic in November 2020—a time when many small businesses were scaling back or closing up shop—Paleteria Magia Fresca opened its doors and has not looked back. The Mexican ice cream maker sells natural fruit ice cream and popsicles, as well as fruit juices and traditional Mexican snacks. A testament to the Southside’s burgeoning Latino population, customers can enjoy unusual flavors such as tamarind, soursop, and mango chili. Cream popsicles, fruit popsicles, and ice cream are all on the menu. Chili pineapple is another interesting flavor. 5810 St. Augustine Rd., Mandarin
Malachi’s Ice Cream Bar
Just down the street from Waffle Cone is Malachi’s Ice Cream Bar, another new arrival on Jax’s
frozen treats scene. In addition to your standard scoops of ice cream, Malachi’s serves frozen treats laced with alcohol including sorbets made with beer, wine and champagne. With a comfortable, upscale interior and $5 wine Wednesdays, it’s the sort of place you want to stay a while and enjoy your treat. Cool off with a mimosa sorbet or a boozy slushie or milkshake. Other notable menu items include Malachi’s espresso martinis and the mudslide, an Oreo, brownie, and chocolate combo. 1661 Riverside Ave., Riverside
Peterbrooke Chocolatier
Peterbrooke Chocolatier might be better known for its chocolatecovered popcorn and handmade candies, but those who’ve tried the gelato know it’s anything but an afterthought. Each Wednesday in July, Peterbrooke gives out a free small scoop to customers to celebrate National Ice Cream Month. The hometown franchise operation carries between 12 and 18 gelato varieties on any given day. The flavors change quite frequently and are always made inhouse. Multiple locations
Cookies and Creme Jax Beach
Sometimes ice cream alone just isn’t enough. There are occasions when a pair of cookies flanking the scoops of ice cream are desired. At Cookies and Creme Jax Beach, customers can build their own ice cream sandwiches with made-from-scratch cookies. Menu items rotate daily to keep things fresh. For example, love milkshakes? Don’t miss Wednesdays. Vegan and gluten-free options are available. Springfield Scoops is fond of whipped cream, chocolate sauce, nuts, sprinkles, and of course, the proverbial cherry on top. Toppings include graham cracker, Oreo, marshmallow, fruity pebbles, cinnamon toast crunch, and 10 different sauces and syrup. The shop also lets you build your own shake. 1807 N. Main St., Springfield
Conie’s Ice Cream
No matter your diet restrictions or preferences, there’s something for most everyone at Conie’s Ice Cream. Everything on the menu is kosher here, and sugar-free, vegan, and gluten-free options are available, too. If Conie’s 33 sundae and shake flavors aren’t enough, customers can combine flavors to make a personal-
ized frozen masterpiece. The shop also serves ice cream cakes and pies with flavors like banana pudding, lemon meringue, key lime, pumpkin, chocolate, Oreo, Snickers, Reeses, among others. Conie’s boasts the only flavor burst machine in Northeast Florida, which adds stripes of flavor to your soft serve. Conie’s has 11 flavors of cone dip including toasted coconut, butterscotch, orange, and key lime. They recently unveiled freeze-dried candies and “Coolers,” their homemade version of Dole Whip. There are plans to open a location in Arlington and perhaps more Jax locations.
119Jeremiah’s Italian Ice

FORT MOSE FEST HARVEST NOVEMBER
4
Harvest Time at Fort Mose celebrates and recreates a typical autumn festival within 18th-century Spanish Florida. This is an immersive experience, typically including reenactors in period dress, a farmers’ market, colonial cooking demonstrations, food samples and presentations on local ‘fusion’ cuisine reflecting Spanish, Native and African influences. Throughout the day, visitors will witness lively demonstrations by the Fort Mose militia. Many special activities are offered for children such as junior militia training and the making of pottery, leather jewelry and corn husk dolls.
