NOTES The vegetion on Herring Island is comprised of predominantly native species. These trees are mostly deciduous and will thus have similar canopy cover all year round. As evident in the site analysis above there are some estaurine flora species of plants that thrive on the river banks of the yarra these include reeds and certain native grasses. The open picnic area seen in yellow has non-native buffalo grass that fulfills the spaces function of providing adequate grass cover for the public to picnic on.

NOISE KEY

TRAFFIC NOISE RIVER AMBIENCE

NOTES Due to this sites close proximity to the city link freeway the sound of traffic is quite overwhelming on the north-western sides of the island. The relatively dense vegetation acts as a natural buffer of some of the noise pollution and the south- eastern side of the island is much quieter with the subtle ambience of the Yarra river.

VIEWS KEY VIEW FROM LAND TO ISLAND VIEWS OFF THE ISLAND MAIN VIEWS ON ISLAND VIEWS OF CITY SKYLINE

NOTES From my site visits to Herring Island i noticed that much of the views experienced on the island are limited by a combination of narrow walking paths and thick foliage on either side. The grassy open area is perhaps the area which draws most visual attention from visitors and this could influence my potential site of my piece of architecture. There are also view from surrounding hills and walking paths.

VEGETATION is used to block the VIEWS and SOUNDS of the city skyline and traffic prior to entry into my tunnel design. As it is a tunnel, my design will require a path to be diverted off one of the pre-existing paths to direct people throuhg it. The tunnel is located on the highpoint of the island at approximately 9meters above SEA LEVEL, this is to ensure the view of the city skyline is clear upon exit of the tunnel. An interesting aspect of my chosen design location is that it is at a point where both the natural flowing sounds of the YARRA and also the hustle and bustle of the nearby traffic can be heard, my tunnel could act as a GATEWAY between the two juxtaposing ambiences of nature and traffic (man’s construction).

THE ‘SECRET’ THEME & CONCEPT

ARTIFICIAL ISLAND

Herring Island is an formed through basalt mining that diverted the path of the Yarra. My tunnel design shows the connection between the natural basalt that was mined at this location in the past to the construction of MAN-MADE BUILDINGS. The

“SECRET” will be revealed to the user when they exit the tunnel and see the visual

connection between the SQUARE BASALT COLUMNS and the CITY SKYLINE. RECORDINGS of basalt mining will be AUDIBLE in the tunnel.

In the tunnel, the user will at first experience the natural ambience of the yarra, followed by a recording of basalt mining and finally the sounds of traffic upon the exit of the tunnel. This REPRESENTS, the transition of Melbourne from something natural to entirely man-made
