From the Editor.....

We’re celebrating our 75th issue this magazine and over the years Aura has developed and changed so much. Evolving through the years is vital for us all and we have made some major changes to ensure that Aura is best targeted for our readers and advertisers alike.

To celebrate our special 75th issue we are looking back at past issues throughout the magazine. Some of the very early issues are on formats that modern computers don’t recognise but its amazing to see how dated the issues look which were only five or six years ago, the world changes so quickly, especially when dealing with technology.

We hope that we have done ourselves justice for our birthday issue; it is certainly a jam-packed issue and a few new features to go with it. We have a feature on Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D). It’s a condition which will affect many people over these winter months and we’ve had a look at its history, causes and ways to combat it.

The Herbal Clinic have given us an insight into a ‘Fever’ and how best to get well. While Cardiff Steiner School has given us some ideas to keep the kids happy and busy over the winter months.

Sarah Howcroft continues her interesting features on the Shamans Path and we learn about Cwmchwefru Farm Wool, the little shop of calm and we look at a relaxing self hypnosis CDs with Linda Hopkins.

We have some photos from my favourite place in the world in a new feature on ‘going for a stroll’.

A Different Route On The Journey Linda Hopkins is a Clinical Hypnotherapist living and working in Cwmbran. She has always enjoyed working with clients but this year through family circumstances and needing to take time out, she has taken a slightly different route.

Early this year she produced a couple of CDs to help friends with confidence issues and these were well received with encouraging feedback. Vicky (not her real name) was one of those friends and prior to listening to one of the CDs was very nervous about going to college the following week.

In the course that she was studying, it was essential for her to speak out in front of the class as part of her training. Linda encouraged her to listen to one of the CDs as often as she could during this week and told her that if she did this, then she would be fine.

This is how the recordings can help; firstly Linda guides you into a deep relaxed state.

Hypnosis is like the relaxed feeling you usually have just before you fall asleep. Secondly, when you are in this deep relaxed state, your subconscious mind is more open to suggestion. By concentrating on the words that follow, your subconscious mind is then able to absorb the positive suggestions for maximum success. It assists you to achieve your desires far easier at a subconscious level, than you would normally at a conscious level. You are always in total control and can become fully alert at anytime if you so wish. If you struggle with relaxing, then self hypnosis is a great way to help you with this as an added benefit. It is very similar to a deep meditation.

Listening to the CD not only gave Vicky the confidence to go in front of her class but she also spoke with enthusiasm and excitement.

She now couldn’t wait until the following week, when she was back in front of the class again! She excelled at this role, even asking her tutor for more of this talk time to speak about her subject in other lessons.

Amazed by Vicky’s success, other students wanted to purchase the CDs to help with their issues and interests so Linda set about creating other CDs and mp3s. These include Past Life Regression, Medium and Psychic Development, Sleep Success, Weight Loss – The Easy Way and a Guided Meditation recording.

Linda then wanted to reach out to others further away so that they could also benefit.

She introduced the CDs to her website and Amazon to pursue this avenue. Titles available at the moment are proving to be popular and there are more being created and in the pipeline for the future. The CDs are presented in a protective plastic Jewel Case and are sent out via first class post for speedy delivery.

Although this is just the beginning of this venture for Linda, her CDs and also mp3s are reaching people not only all over the UK but also various countries around the World including European Countries, USA and Canada.

CWMCHWEFRU FARM WOOL

Rubbish in, rubbish out. A phrase applied to computers but equally true for spinning wheels. When I first learnt to spin, putting in many hours of practice to produce a perfect thread, the end result was that garments knitted in my yarn were unattractive and not particularly nice to wear.

Finally light dawned. I was using fleece from commercial sheep, reared for meat production and needed to search out keepers of the old breeds of sheep which had made Britain famous for its wool in centuries past.

Not knowing much about these breeds at that time, my search took a while, but when at last I first touched the wool on a sheep producing ‘spinner’s fleece’ it changed my life!

We already kept commercial sheep so my ‘hobby’ flock had to stay small and not take up too much space and I wanted them coloured so no dyeing was needed. My motley collection caused great amusement amongst our farming friends. Eventually they took over, the commercial sheep went, and we concentrate on producing fine quality wool.

After many generations of crossing various breeds including Cotswold, Corriedale, Shetland, Wensleydale, Icelandic and Gotland the quality of wool and mixture of colours is outstanding, though no two sheep are alike.

The best fleeces are kept back for hand-spinners who appreciate the quality from a flock where all management is geared to producing the best possible fleece from every sheep. This means the sheep are fed liberally to keep the wool growing, medicine used is homoeopathic as a first choice, and as little chemical is used as possible on both the sheep and the farm.

A mill which specialises in spinning Rare Breed fibre gives the rest of the wool the special attention it deserves. Some is spun into yarn for hand-knitting, some is knitted on the farm into a range of jumpers, hats, and scarves, and some is woven by a local weaver into gorgeous cuddly throws. A few organically tanned sheepskins are produced each year.

All are available at various shops and galleries, including the Wool and Willow Shop in Hay on Wye. Some items can be seen on the farm, but by appointment only please.

Seasonal Affective Disorder The effects of light When light hits the back of the eye (the retina), messages are passed to the part of the brain (the hypothalamus) that rules sleep, appetite, sex drive, temperature, mood and activity. If there’s not enough light, these functions are likely to slow down and gradually stop. Some people seem to need a lot more light than others, and these are the people who develop seasonal affective disorder (SAD), to a greater or lesser extent.

Why do we have seasonal mood changes?

Most of us feel better when the sun is shining – more cheerful and energetic. On grey, gloomy days, especially in winter, we tend to feel less enthusiastic, more inclined to stay indoors, to do less work, to socialise less and to eat more. The reason for this is the change in the quality and quantity of light.

As winter approaches, there are fewer daylight hours and so, by December, we often get up in the dark and come home from work or college in darkness. What’s more, the shorter winter days don’t have the same light intensity that we get in summer.

The cycle of light and dark determines our sleeping and waking patterns. Until the widespread use of electric light, people used to wake and get up with the dawn light and sleep when it became dark. In winter, people would sleep longer and be less active.

Nowadays, we tend to override these natural rhythms and manipulate the hours of light and darkness to suit our modern working, social and family lives. Many night-shift workers and jet-lagged air travellers suffer from disrupting their body clocks in this way.

What are the effects of SAD? Many people report that they eat and sleep more in winter and that long stretches of grey skies make them feel low – this is all perfectly natural. But for those with SAD, the changes in mood and behaviour are much more severe, and happen regularly, each winter, following a seasonal pattern.

Symptoms (for people in Northern Europe) may start emerging between September and November and continue until March, April or even May. The symptoms go away in spring, either suddenly (with a short period of hyperactivity) or gradually, depending on the amount of sunlight in the spring and early summer.

Symptoms Once someone has experienced two or three winters of symptoms, they can be said to be suffering from SAD. The symptoms are many and varied, and people can experience any of the following common effects: • lack of energy for everyday tasks • being more prone to illness – some people with SAD may have a lowered immune system during the winter, and may

be more likely to get colds, infections and other illnesses • sleep problems • depression – feeling sad, low, weepy, guilty, a failure; sometimes hopeless and despairing, sometimes apathetic and feeling nothing • mood changes – in some people, bursts of over-activity and cheerfulness (known as hypomania) in spring and autumn • anxiety – tenseness and inability to cope with everyday stresses; panic attacks • social problems – irritability, and not wanting to see people; abusive behaviour • concentration problems • overeating – particularly craving carbohydrates and putting on weight (which may increase negative feelings) • loss of interest in sex or physical contact • alcohol and drug abuse A small percentage of people have very severe symptoms and can’t function in winter without continuous treatment. Many can find it difficult to study or hold down a job during this season, because they feel lethargic or sleepy and find it difficult to concentrate.

Their relationships can be put under strain, and may even break up, because they become irritable and less able to consider the feelings of others. However, for some people, symptoms are fairly mild and last for a shorter period, mainly during December, January and February, and are known as the ‘winter blues’, or sub-syndromal SAD. SAD was first systematically reported and named in the early 1980s by Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D., and his associates at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

of depression during the dark days of the northern US winter. He theorized that the lesser amount of light in winter was the cause. Rosenthal and his colleagues then documented the phenomenon of SAD in a placebo-controlled study utilizing light therapy. A paper based on this research was published in 1984. Although Rosenthal's ideas were initially greeted with skepticism, SAD has become well recognized, and his 1993 book, Winter Blues has become the standard introduction to the subject.

Research on SAD in the United States began in 1970 when Herb Kern, a research engineer, had also noticed that he felt depressed during the winter months. Kern suspected that scarcer light in winter was the cause and discussed the idea with scientists at the NIMH who were working on bodily rhythms. They were intrigued, and responded by devising a lightbox to treat Kern’s depression. Kern felt much better within a few days of treatments, as did other patients treated in the same way.

In many species, activity is diminished during the winter months in response to the reduction in available food and the difficulties of surviving in cold weather. Hibernation is an extreme example, but even species that do not hibernate often exhibit changes in behavior during the winter. It has been argued that SAD is an evolved adaptation in humans that is a variant or remnant of a hibernation response in some remote ancestor.

Presumably, food was scarce during most of human prehistory, and a tendency toward low mood during the winter months would have been adaptive by reducing the need for calorie intake. The preponderance of women with SAD suggests that the response may

Winter depression is a common slump in the mood of some inhabitants of most of the Nordic countries. It was first described by the 6th century Goth scholar Jordanes in his Getica wherein he described the inhabitants of Scandza (Scandinavia). Iceland, however, seems to be an exception.

A study of more than 2000 people there found the prevalence of seasonal affective disorder and seasonal changes in anxiety and depression to be unexpectedly low in both sexes. The study's authors suggested that propensity for SAD may differ due to some genetic factor within the Icelandic population. A study of Canadians of wholly Icelandic descent also showed low levels of SAD. It has more recently been suggested that this may be attributed to the large amount of fish traditionally eaten by Icelandic people, in 2007 about 90 kilograms per person per year as opposed to about 24 kg in the US and Canada, rather than to genetic predisposition; a similar anomaly is noted in Japan, where annual fish consumption in recent years averages about 60 kg per capita. Fish are high in vitamin D. Fish also contain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which has been shown to help with a variety of neurological dysfunctions. To give an example of how widespread the popular understanding of SAD is, a character suffers from seasonal affective disorder in the Swedish Horror film Marianne.

What causes SAD? The exact causes of SAD are still unclear.

Scientists and doctors worldwide have been researching SAD since the early 1980s, and there are several theories as to what causes it and what triggers it.

Low serotonin levels There are several brain chemicals involved in SAD, but the main one is serotonin. People experiencing depression have been found to have lower levels of serotonin, particularly in winter. It is thought that serotonin might not work properly in people with SAD. Low melatonin levels When it’s dark, the pineal gland in the brain produces the hormone melatonin which makes us sleep; when it becomes light again, it stops producing melatonin and we wake up. This process also occurs in animals; and those which hibernate have been found to have very high levels of melatonin.

Some people with SAD have likened their symptoms to a desire to hibernate for the winter. And it has been found that people with SAD produce much higher melatonin levels in winter than those who don’t have SAD symptoms, but their summer levels are normal.

When treated with bright light, melatonin levels drop to normal. However, suppressing melatonin doesn’t cure the symptoms, so this factor isn’t likely to be the sole cause of SAD. Disrupted body clock The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), in the brain, sets a person’s body clock (circadian rhythm) by ‘noticing’ when it’s daylight or not.

One theory is that if it becomes ‘faulty’ it can slow down the body clock, causing lethargy and depression. However, bright light (in the morning or from light treatment) can ‘reset’ the body clock and alleviate the symptoms, so the faulty SCN can’t be the only factor involved in this ongoing disorder.

Possible triggers No one really knows what triggers SAD, but it has been linked to events such as childbirth, hysterectomy or other hormonal upheavals.

It’s been suggested that postnatal depression may be SAD, brought on by the considerable stress of having a baby. Note: if you already suffer from SAD, and are hoping to start a family, spring is probably the best time to have a baby. SAD has also been reported to have been triggered by a major loss or bereavement, or by serious illness, all of which are common triggers of depression.

Who gets SAD? SAD can begin at any age, most commonly between 18 and 30, with more people developing it before the age of 21 than after.

It’s thought that twice as many women as men have SAD, but it’s difficult to get an accurate picture, as men can find it harder to admit to depressive symptoms.

Some people even get SAD in summer, during dull periods.

People who have lived near the tropics for part of their lives and then emigrated to this country seem to be more vulnerable to SAD symptoms. Note: people from different cultural backgrounds may show symptoms differently, and this can sometimes lead to being misdiagnosed with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, for instance.

What sort of treatments are there?

Many people make their own diagnosis and treat themselves. However, talking to your GP will give you further information and treatment options. helps many people, usually within three to five days. It means spending some time each day exposed to very bright light, at least ten times the intensity of domestic lighting.

Ordinary light bulbs and fittings are not strong enough, and ordinary suntan lamps or boxes, which emit high levels of ultra violet (UV) light, should not be used. Light treatment with the correct lights is perfectly safe: enough UV is screened out, so there is no danger of eye problems or skin cancer.

Light is measured in ‘lux’. To be effective, a light intended to reduce the symptoms of SAD should be at least 2,500 lux, although most manufacturers now produce 10,000 lux models. There’s a range of light equipment available, including light boxes, visors and dawn simulators.

• The light boxes range in size from a small TV-sized tabletop box to a wallmounted window-type fixture. They contain a number of bright light tubes covered by a screen. You sit about half a metre to a metre away from it, and can carry on with normal activities, such as reading, working, eating or even watching TV.

The benefits continue as long as it’s used every day. Once your routine is established, you can take occasional days off or go away for a long weekend, as long as you start again as soon as you return. If you have already been experiencing severe symptoms before you start light treatment then you are unlikely to get much benefit from it. Manufacturers advise trying again earlier the next year.

Occasionally, people report headaches, irritability or, in very rare cases, nausea when using light treatment. Changing your position may help, but if problems persist, you must stop using light treatment. Anyone using light treatment, regularly, should tell their optician and have an annual eye check up.

Anyone with existing eye problems should ask whether lights are safe. Light boxes are

Older antidepressants such as amitriptyline, imipramine and dosulepin are less commonly used nowadays and more problematic, because they increase symptoms like sleepiness. (See Mind’s booklet Making sense of antidepressants for information about side effects and withdrawal.)

What else can I do to help myself?

Make the most of natural light. We know that being outdoors throughout the winter isn’t a cure, because many farmers and outdoor workers have SAD. However, it is still worth taking opportunities to be exposed to natural light when possible. Going outdoors, particularly around midday or on bright days, can be effective in reducing symptoms. If it is safe to do so (i.e. when you will not impair your vision), try to wear sunglasses a bit less often: this will allow greater exposure to natural light. Additionally, having pale colours within

the home that reflect light from outside can be helpful.

Avoid stress Your body is less able to deal with a high level of pressure within the winter months. (See the Mind guide to managing stress.) Even if you can’t curl up in bed and sleep for six months, you can simplify your life in winter.

Be ruthless about which tasks can be left until summer, especially major ones, such as changing jobs, moving home, extra housework and decorating or repairs. Plan ahead for the winter. Buy Christmas presents, stock up store cupboards and give parties in the summer, when you want to.

Pamper yourself physically with a massage, or learn how relaxation exercises can help you unwind.

Exercise and eat well You need to keep active during the winter, but with routine stress-free activities that don’t require too much concentration or drain your energy.

There’s plenty of evidence to show how good physical activity is for mental wellbeing, and for helping with problems such as depression.

One research study showed that a daily one-hour walk, in the middle of the day, could be as helpful as light treatment for coping with the winter blues.

A healthy diet is also important, and you should try to balance the common SAD craving for carbohydrates, such as pasta and potatoes, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Some people find that taking extra vitamin B12 is helpful.

Going for a stroll Its amazing how much better we can all feel with some fresh air, a gentle walk and some beautiful scenery. One of my favourite places is Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula. On my recent trek there, I took these photos. We were blessed with a gorgeous day which made it even more wonderful.

If you haven’t been to Three Cliffs Bay then I really recommend it, it’s not the easiest of walks, so please think twice if you’re not used to regular walking but it is magical.

A dvent begins four Sunday before Christmas, this year on 2 December. The run up to

Christmas can be a stressful time for many families, with the pressure of frantic consumerism everywhere we look. Yet traditionally Advent (from the Latin ‘to come’) was a time for fasting and inner reorientation. Today it still offers space for peaceful contemplation, for finding oneself among the outer preparations, and can be a time when we help children practice preparation, patience, and measured anticipation for things to come.

Steiner schools around the world have an Advent Spiral. Each child in turn, holding an apple with a candle, slowly walks to the centre of a spiral path of evergreen boughs, interspersed with golden stars. They light their candle from one in the centre, and on their return place their candle carefully down along the path, choosing their own place, lighting the way for the other children. When all the children have had their turn, the whole path is aglow, like a shining garden of lights.The Advent Spiral reflects winter's dark growing to a close and the renewed promise that spring light and life will begin again.

You can make an Advent Spiral at home. Paint a wooden board and stick down 25 or 28 golden cut out stars. Each day move a candle in a tea light holder along the spiral path. Or make a spiral from bread dough and press in 25 indents to fill with glass beads or small birthday candles. To make an Advent Spiral to be used year after year, felt or embroider a cloth with stars. Place a candle at the centre, and move a smaller candle in a holder along each star day by day. Have a warm and peaceful Advent.
