Prospect Retreat A parametric brick shelter Course: SARC162 - Design Communication
008.
Prospect Retreat is an architectural design communication project developed for SARC162: Design Communication. For this project, I was tasked with designing a parametric brick wall located in Cobblestone Park, Wellington. The brick wall had to include a wooden tectonic element, and the wall had to serve a function. Prospect Retreat looks at how people inhabit the park, and was developed in reaction to Wellington’s infamous climate. The wall’s form is based on a native American tipi; a conical shaped tent that has a hole at the top for ventilation. The shape allows circulation throughout the interior, and offers some lighting into the interior, whilst still providing shelter from the elements. Overall, the design best serves people looking for a sheltered seating area away from the elements and is protected from the adjacent Vivian Street.

Linear vs. Curvature form finding process
Contra An architectural dwelling SARC112: Design Processes Contra is an architectural process project, developed for SARC112: Design Processes. The brief for this project was to develop a hut for a television character. The hut must developed through a model making and photo-manipulation process, and minimal drawing must be used. The final design must be presented through photo-montage form. This project looks to explore Harvey Specter’s ambition, and how it’s his strength and weakness. Strength and weakness is a duality, and so this project explores dualities, such as lightness and darkness, linear and curvature, black and white, and positive and negative space.
019.
Ray Tracing Study 020.
One of the main contrasts explored in this project was lightness and darkness, and how that can influence interior architectures. One of the precedent designs for this Tadao Ando’s Chapel of Light. This design took the “light beam” idea and used it to creating a single beam of light that lights the interior as the sun progresses throughout today. The ray tracing study (right) looks to explore this light through a series of photographs.

Scale Tests
Photo-montage One of the main representational methods used in this project was photo-montage. This method is an artistic that can be used to show a model in context. It tends to not by hyper-realistic or accurate, but rather portrays the model in a contextual setting using key elements from the site to provide contextual meaning.

Journey A digital response to the city of Wellington SARC161: Introduction to Design Communication 026.
This project explores the city of Wellington through digital modeling, rendering and photographical exploration. The brief was to travel along three journeys throughout the city, to record something of interest about that journey, and to create 3 models, based on those factors. Also, some form of secondary analysis had to be carried out to inform the model making process as well. Journey explores surface fracturing of concrete walkways, manhole cover patterning and positioning, and the mortar lines and bricks of brick walkways.

Design Process These models were designed using Grasshopper. A variety of method were used, but the initial process was to gather the recordings from each journey and to synthesize their data types in varying types of variables to be plugged into Grasshopper geometries. Ultimately, each design represents a set of data from a certain area of each journey.

Genius Locus Where genius occurs: an interior for Sherlock Holmes SARC112: Design Process This project was developed for SARC112: Design Process. The brief for this project was to develop an interior for a book character. The interior elements had to include a piece of furniture, an exterior view and a surface. This project looked to explore what being a genius is, and how interiors can influence cognitive function. The 2 methods this interior uses to influence cognition are light and colour. By reversing Baker Miller pink (a psychologically calming pastel pink used in 1980s prison psychology experiments) to a purple colour, cognition activity is increased, the inhabiting person is calmed, and creativity flourishes. Light is influenced through coloured filters, view-shafts and sinuous translucent retroflective paneling (the surface).

Miscellaneous Works A collection of drawings, graphic design, renders and photography 038.
Year 13 - 1st-year Architecture These works are images that I have produced over the past couple years. Although each entire project didn’t have enough merit to be shown in full, these images are some of my better pieces of work and definitely deserved an honourable mention.

Cantilever Table
Cantilever Table A multifunctional bedside table Personal Design Project This table was designed as a bedside table to solve the problem of bed tray tables that need to be placed on the bed. This table was designed to be able to ask as a normal table, but then be able to slot under a bed in order to provide a table on top of the bed to provide a work/eating place.
Ch-rot (pronounced trot) A rotating multifunctional chair/table Personal Design Project This chair / table was designed to be of a multifunctional use, serving as an ottoman, seat, table and coffee table. The chair can be rotated to different orientations in order to serve different purposes. Multiple ch-rots can lock together to form a coffee table, the can be rotated upside down for form an ottoman or they can be placed sideways or right-side-up to act as a smaller table or chair, than can store different sized books in the middle cavity. Materiality: Mahogany and Cheery Ch-rot (table/seat position)

Tri-line A multi-level walkway SARC112: Design Process
042.
Tri-line was developed for the landscape project of SARC112: Design Processes. The brief was to design a memorial park in response to a movie character. This design looks to explore how different people have fun, and is a response to Mathew Broderick’s Ferris Bueller. The lower sections allow the youths and active people of the city to partake in a variety of more active activities, the middle section acts as a threshold between active and passive users, and the top level is oriented the more passive users, acting as a park that is very similar to the New York Highline.

Proportional Rationale A parametric brick wall SARC162: Design Communication This project was developed for SARC162: Design Communication. The brief for this project was to develop a brick wall that responds to push-pull movements, rotation and brick subtractions (voids). This design was developed based off of mathematical proportions, such as wave typologies and amplitudes, sine and cosine values, as well as the golden ratio.

Cycle A sustainable e-bike shelter SARC131: Introduction to Sustainability This project was developed for SARC131: Introduction to Sustainability. The brief was to design an e-bike shelter for Victoria University of Wellington’s Kelburn Campus. This design holds up to 24 e-bikes, and is made entirely of Accoya, an acetylated radiata pine. Other features include Pavegen Kinetic Tiles, native plantings and a UV sterilized, charcoal filtered recycling grey-water system.
