Fine distinctions

n recent years it has become something of a tradition for me to take our many faithful readers off on fascinating journeys in the introductory pages of our catalogue. We have been to the ice-bound expanses of Siberia, the breathtaking glaciers of Mount Denali in Alaska, Rumania’s Carpathian Mountains and the mountains of Uganda, to mention just a few. The amazing feedback I get – whether it’s the entries in our guestbook, the emails I receive or even personal chats on the street – always makes me smile. It’s good to know that the experiences, the many emotional moments, are appreciated by so many people and often provide a source of inspiration for their own adventures. That’s the way it should be! We also receive frequent feedback here at Jack Wolfskin, some of which is directed to me personally, about how we present our products. Several of those comments have made it clear to me that our range is now so large that we needed a better overview and clearer differentiation. The excitement I feel at the thought of a fully-packed rucksack, a night in my tent and the prospect of new adventures is equalled by the emotional investment in our new products, which are designed to make the travelling just that little bit more comfortable. This is something that has never left me. After every journey, (and not just my own), we bring new experiences, ideas, stimuli and suggestions for improvements back to the Jack Wolfskin fold. We have a large team of textile engineers, technicians, designers and product managers constantly working to make our products even better. Our designers are legendary for their creativity, expertise and experience and above all for their passion and enthusiasm for our products. Thanks to them, we are able to make reliable, high quality products with fantastic attention to detail. Some of our products might look similar to one another and yet the differences are there and are easy to spot if you look more closely – or if you work with them on a daily basis. At Jack Wolfskin, we aim to provide the right ‘product solution’ for a wide range of very different requirements. And since no one product can do everything, we necessarily end up with a large number of solutions. It is the finely differentiated product range that represents one of Jack Wolfskin’s great strengths. This catalogue places a greater emphasis on these fine distinctions. An explanation of the concepts that underpin our three main product lines then appear on the pages that follow. You'll see how our three main areas ALPINISM, TREKKING and HIKING lead the design process and also provide you with clearer orientation. This approach applies to our clothing, mountain boots and shoes as well as the tents, rucksacks and important travel accessories. Many of you organise your clothing according to the layering system. We have used the same approach to present our own technical layering system – TEXAPORE “hard shells”, SOFTSHELLS, FLEECE and FUNCTIONAL UNDERWEAR – in a context that makes for easier orientation and selection. You will find greater prominence given to background technical information, better explanations of special products and the activities they are designed for and more detailed descriptions of distinguishing characteristics. Some of the pages are laid out in table form to give you an even better overview and they also include background information for those of you who are particularly interested in the technical aspects. The heart of our collection, our ‘royal discipline’, the TEXAPORE jackets, are clearly presented in overview format and include recommendations to help you negotiate your way around our comprehensive range. A materials lexicon for each product group clearly demonstrates how we tailor our functional fabrics to meet your specific activity requirements. And just to make sure things do not get too dry and technical, there are a few words from me included here and there. “The idea behind it” sections provide you with a behind-the-scenes look at some of the little stories that became big ideas. The spirit of the “on the road” generation or the as yet unsolved KWOPS mystery help to place our products in their historical context and, who knows, might even provide the occasional touch of light entertainment … For nearly 25 years now, I have had the privilege to be involved in putting our ideas into practice. It all started during my time as a student when I used to work in a mountain sports’ shop to pay my way through college and fund trips abroad. My first ever Jack Wolfskin jacket, the legendary Texapore CHO O YU, (in green and purple!) came with me on a three week trekking trip through the Femundsmarka National Park in Norway. It was the start of a long and affectionate relationship! There is still a touch of the CHO O YU about our jackets today, as you’ll see on page 43 (EXPOSURE). The rucksack I used in Norway, the DENALI, is also back in our collection. It is based on an idea developed in the mid 1980’s, even if it now includes the odd improvement here or there. Good ideas live forever!

And of course this catalogue also contains more of the travel reports and great pictures which continue to encourage us all to lace our boots and get back out there again. We invite you to accompany us on an amazing ten-day walk around Iceland, a truly fascinating country. We found Iceland to be a wild place where the weather never stays the same, an island that is constantly changing and which the wind and rain threaten to grind down and wash into the sea. Just the right kind of country for Jack Wolfskin then! And we went to Georgia, too. Few people know much about the impressive fivethousand metre peaks of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, despite the fact that they are virtually on our doorsteps. It is a country that in recent years has often been depicted as a place of crisis. In actual fact, it is a country whose people and landscapes deserve to experience the benefits that tourism and its attendant opportunities for economic development could bring to them. I was also lucky enough to accompany trusted friends and companions to the labyrinthine mountains of the Himalayas. The mountain town Leh in the Kashmir region of Ladakh was our starting point for a long trekking trip and amazing encounters with the incredibly friendly people of this “land of high passes”. It was a particular honour to be accompanied by our friend, the Buddhist monk Lama Tsewang from the Lingshed Monastery in Zanskar. Trekking or mountain tours are about more than wonderful experiences in the world of nature. The ever-fascinating openness, friendship and hospitality of the people you meet along the way leave a far deeper impression. And it’s often these short but intensive encounters, the friendly welcome, the small gestures of friendship or offers of help that remain in your memory. You'll find fascinating impressions of this emotional journey in both words and images from page 126 of this catalogue. That journey to Ladakh finished earlier than originally planned, so I’ve already been mentally packing my rucksack again – and it’s pretty full already! As this catalogue is being printed and your thoughts are perhaps turning from slight winter melancholia to long summer evenings and warmer temperatures, I'm off again, back onto the ice. Not Siberian ice this time around … but more about that in six months time, ok?!

ALPINISM ALPINE Rucksacks The possibilities for mountain sports are as varied as the mountains themselves. They range from mountain walks in fine weather to multiday hut-to-hut walks, from via ferratas to high level alpine tours and summit bagging with sections of rock climbing and glacier crossings thrown in. This is why our ALPINISM and HIKING product lines have so many overlaps. The rucksacks are the clearest example of this. They have to be of narrow design and close-fitting, to avoid snagging on rocks or affecting your balance. These requirements apply both to climbing and walking on exposed paths. Rucksacks also need different attachment options depending on the type of equipment used, e. g. trekking poles, ice axe, helmet, carabiner etc. The rucksacks in our ALPINISM line have more of these features than our HIKING rucksacks. You will also find that our alpine packs often incorporate details like reinforced gear pouches for crampons and lashing straps for touring skis. The stabilising back plate and waist belt can usually be removed from our alpine rucksacks to make them more flexible for climbing.

Why does JACK WOLFSKIN have several different product lines?

e get asked certain questions all the time. For example: Is JACK WOLFSKIN hiking equipment suitable for mountaineering use? Does it have to be a product from the ALPINISM range? Is there really any difference between a TREKKING jacket and a HIKING jacket? What’s the difference between a rucksack made for hiking and a technical alpine pack? Why are there so many different types of JACK WOLFSKIN jackets? The answer is a straightforward one. It is, of course, perfectly possible to wear HIKING apparel for mountaineering or TREKKING trousers on a weekend walk. This is because the JACK WOLFSKIN product lines share many of the same characteristics. Most of our apparel is all about providing weather protection, i. e. protection from the rain, the wind and/or the cold. The clothing is all designed to keep you feeling comfortable outdoors whatever you’re doing. In addition, all our products are made of best quality, robust materials. This is the common starting point for everything we make. However, some outdoor activities have their own particular requirements. And it’s these differences in the way a jacket or a rucksack should perform that determine the categorisation of our product lines. Grouping our products in this way should also help you to decide which model you really need for the activity you have in mind. Or to put it another way: during the product development process we base our designs on the actual activities that a piece of kit is going to be used for, whether the focus is more on ALPINE criteria (e. g. very robust, lightweight, climbing harness compatible), TREKKING (longer tours, heavier load, long-term usage, durability) or HIKING (shorter tours, multipurpose). Overall though, all our products are designed with one common aim in mind: getting out and active whatever the weather and feeling at home outdoors!

Why does JACK WOLFSKIN have several different product lines?

ALPINE Apparel There is a particular set of criteria to take into account when designing alpine clothing. Breathability is right up there at the top of the list. On strenuous uphill slogs or when scrambling and climbing, the heat and sweat generated have to be able to escape effectively through the fabric of the clothing. Alongside our highly breathable TEXAPORE jackets, soft shell jackets and pants have an important role to play here. When there is no rain and it’s not too cold, i. e. in ‘normal’ alpine conditions, it is often better to wear a SOFT SHELL and pack a lightweight weatherproof shell jacket. Which brings us to the second alpine apparel requirement: low weight. When you are gaining height metre by metre, every extra kilo means additional exertion. The weight saving aspect sometimes has to compete for priority with the high levels of durability required from the garment in order to cope with contact with rock and ice and when using rock climbing and ice climbing equipment. The TEXAPORE products in our

ALPINISM product line are all made of similarly robust face fabrics, but their actual specifications vary according to whether they are designed to be used as lightweight shell jackets or thicker and more rugged jackets for demanding tours at high altitude. The ALPINE jackets often use weight-optimised 3-ply or 2.5-ply versions of TEXAPORE and are cut specifically to allow maximum freedom of movement. They also tend to have a medium-length or a short, sporty cut. Our ALPINE apparel also incorporates specific technical detailing: raised pockets on the jackets, which are readily accessible when wearing a climbing harness or rucksack, full-length zippers on the legs of our pants to make them easy to pull on when wearing skis or big boots and the small but very useful ALPINE POCKET – a weather resistant pocket on the upper sleeve of the jacket, sized to accommodate GPS, mobile phone or muesli bar, i. e. anything you might need to get your hands on in a hurry.

TREKKING

By 'trekking' we generally mean longer tours off the beaten track under your own steam. This means taking everything with you for the entire duration of the trip, including clothing for all types of weather, food and drink, camping equipment and any other special equipment the journey might require. The classic trekking routes are in the Himalayas, base camp treks or longer routes over the high mountain passes. Many of the nature reserves in Scandinavia are also well-known for their trekking routes. The big peaks and national parks of Africa are top destinations and in the Antarctic, trekking is a major expedition in itself. Of course, trekking tours can be carried out on horseback, by canoe, by bicycle or on skis, but at JACK WOLFSKIN we concentrate mainly on long distance walking in different regions of the world. Trekking in those regions you can leave civilisation behind and live predominantly out in there the wild country. In our catalogues over the last five years we have featured stories from the John Muir Trail in the Yosemite National Park, California, Mount Elgon in Uganda, the Romanian Carpathian Mountains, the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, the Siberian winter at Lake Baikal. This time round we are off to the Himalayas, trekking in Ladakh in Northern India.

TREKKING Equipment The essential items for trekking are a lightweight tent, a sleeping bag and a mat. According to the climate zone, you have to be prepared for heavy rain, strong winds or even clouds of mosquitoes. In addition to the standard features, JACK WOLFSKIN tents provide exceptionally high wind stability, generously sized interiors, extremely waterproof groundsheets, fine mesh mosquito nets and plenty of other useful details. Next come the right mat and sleeping bag. The size and thickness you opt for depends on the nighttime temperature likely to be encountered. These bulkier items largely determine the capacity of the trekking rucksack. A volume of 55 to 70 litres is useful. And since volume translates into weight carried, the rucksack carry system also has to meet certain crucial requirements. Stable load distribution from the shoulders to the hips, comfortable padding, good ventilation, individually adjustable settings, these are just some of the key characteristics required. A trekking rucksackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s functionality is further enhanced by useful compartment division, good accessibility and by the inclusion of an integrated rain cover.

TREKKING

TREKKING Apparel When trekking you get fewer options to choose the weather you go out in than with other outdoor activities. A summit day can be postponed if the conditions are poor, but in the middle of Sweden’s Sarek National Park, you can’t just sit in your tent and wait for the weather to change – you could be waiting for days. Trekking clothing has to perform reliably in constant rain, permanent wind or unpleasantly cold temperatures. We can guarantee this because we choose our materials with the utmost care. Our TREKKING jackets are extremely robust. In addition to being waterproof they remain comfortable due to their high breathability. All our TREKKING jackets are equipped with venting pit zips for adjustable air flow through the jacket, providing additional ventilation where you sweat the most. All the jackets are made of very breathable materials, including some made from the extremely breathable TEXAPORE O2. They also have a slightly longer cut. Ideally, the trekking jacket needs to be long enough to protrude below the rucksack waist belt. This ensures that pressure points are avoided and that rain runs off over and not into your waterproof pants. Many of our TREKKING jackets are equipped with a REGULAR SYSTEM ZIP so that they can be combined with a compatible mid-layer fleece jacket. All models have adjustable hoods with stiffened peaks and there are plenty of generously-sized pockets on both the jackets and the trousers.

TREKKING Footwear Shock absorption is an important criterion in footwear designed for long-distance walking with a heavy pack but without foot fatigue. Our TREKKING footwear comes with a cushioning midsole component and an additional shock absorbing inlay sole as standard. As with clothing, a high level of weather protection is also fundamental. All the footwear in our TREKKING line is either made of leather or incorporates a TEXAPORE membrane. The boots come up above the ankle and provide excellent support. As the feet expand during continuous walking, our TREKKING boots are designed to be slightly roomier inside. The lasts around which our footwear is constructed were developed using a wide range of measurement data derived from different foot types. The excellent gear test results and the popularity of our TREKKING footwear prove that we are getting it right.

HIKING

The HIKING line is one of the most varied product themes in our catalogue. We define hiking as being out on foot with only a light pack. This might be a day trip or a longer trip with overnight stays in mountain huts or guesthouses. Hiking is possible on (just about) every type of terrain. Whether plateau or summit, wood or tundra, marked paths or via ferrata, the possibilities are many and varied.

HIKING Apparel Our HIKING jackets generally have a normal or sportier, cropped cut. The SHORT SYSTEM ZIP on certain models means that they can be combined with an appropriate mid-layer fleece. Our TEXAPORE HIKING jackets are subject to the same weather protection requirements as those in our other product lines. The difference here is that we use a far wider range of different types of TEXAPORE face fabrics. Certain HIKING jackets have a textile outer surface while others use a lightweight technical outer material. Some of them resemble our TREKKING products in terms of performance and de tailing while others are closer to a technical ALPINE jacket. Many of our functional classics are also to be found in this pro duct line. The important thing is that all of our HIKING jackets have to meet the same high quality standards as our TREKKING and ALPINISM product lines. As with all outdoor sports, a multilayer functional clothing system is important for hiking, especially when up in the mountains. Our HIKING range therefore also includes soft shells, fleeces, shirts, pants and underwear.

HIKING

HIKING Rucksacks Hiking with a lighter pack (< 10 kg) has the advantage that the rucksackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centre of gravity can be further away from the back. The gap between the back and the pack allows cooling air to circulate, thus reducing back perspiration. Our tried and tested carry system is known as the AIR CONTROL SYSTEM, or ACS for short. On classic hiking rucksacks such as the BARNY, the ACS carry system bows out in a convex shape at the back. On more alpine-orientated hiking rucksacks the ACS TIGHT system holds the rucksack closer to the body and ventilation channels allow warm, moist air to escape. All our HIKING rucksacks come with a rain cover. They are also prepped to accept an on-board hydration system with an inner pouch for the drinks bladder and a tube duct. Nearly all the models have specially designed attachment options for telescopic hiking poles.

HIKING Footwear Our range of HIKING shoes has the right footwear solution for every type of walk, from mid-cut, waterproof, cushioned boots to lightweight, and flexible, well ventilated low-cut shoes suitable for all types of terrain. In general, our HIKING range features lighter models with lower uppers, more flexible soles and lighter uppers materials, together with low-cut hiking shoes. However, there is still a certain amount of crossover with our ALPINISM and TREKKING lines. The most important factors when choosing the right footwear for the job is a comfortable fit and a level of rigidity that is appropriate for the type of activity. Our HIKING range provides a wide selection of models to choose from.

A COMPLETE OUTDOOR OUTFIT, JUST 1.2 kg The newly developed ATMOSPHERE product family blurs the traditional boundaries between our product lines. The basic concept was to create a complete outdoor clothing system that was as light and as functional as possible. For us, this meant that ultimately robustness took priority over lightness, since we are of the opinion that lightness alone is of little use if the underlying durability of the product suffers as a result. The features and detailing were also trimmed to the bare minimum.

So much for the theory, now for the practical aspects. The full four piece ATMOSPHERE outfit weighs in at just 1200 g in size L. The individual components of the system are shown in the overview on the right. The design concept also allowed plenty of room for detailing, e. g. our zip solutions. able to react to demands and quickly moved to set new standards. We set our own development cycles; we went with our convictions. Thanks to the TEXAPORE HYPROOF fabric used in our EXPOSURE jacket we can now claim, to the best of our knowledge, to offer the “most waterproof breathable jacket” on the market. Breathability has become an increasingly important issue as the demands placed by outdoor activities have increased and the number of users has rapidly expanded. Our particularly breathable TEXAPORE O 2 fabrics opened the door to a dramatic increase in performance. And 3-ply TEXAPORE O3 now serves as the power horse behind our range of waterproof alpine jackets. For those of a more technical bent, I recommend having a look at the TEXAPORE fabrics lexicon on page 71. Our first generation TEXAPORE STRETCH fabrics are transforming the market yet again. Concepts such as waterproofing, breathability, increased comfort and minimum weight are no longer incompatible. Products such as the CATARACT jacket now combine them all in one garment. The research and development process is huge; these are just a few examples. We were quick to understand that the best possible weather protection, adapted to meet a wide spectrum of requirements, doesn’t only ensure the comfort and well-being of the wearer. It goes much further than that. It means that more and more people will get out and enjoy the beauty of the world around us, in any conditions, whether wind, rain or snow. It’s only by directly experiencing nature and learning to accept it for what it is that we will ever be able to truly value and preserve it. This is what we believe in. This is what we are all about. Dreams have always had the power to change the world, often in ways you least expected. Basically, the story of TEXAPORE development begins for me with tents and rucksacks. Generations of mountaineers had always talked about wanting better clothing, but the focus was always first and foremost on the mountain, the technical difficulty or the ascent itself. It was only with backpacking in the 1970’s that things really started to change. First in America and later in Europe, a whole new generation decided to get out of the cities and get back to nature. The desire to be independent, to carry everything you needed on your back and pitch your tent wherever you wanted became a way of life – “on the road”… But what was the use having the most comfortable rucksack or the nicest looking tent if you got absolutely soaked on the way to where you were going? As this community of trekkers, mountaineers, walkers and globetrotters slowly grew and developed, so too did the natural desire for better clothing. I made my first longer trip to America as a young student. The plan was to go for three weeks; I ended up staying several months. At the time, there were a few specialist outdoor jackets around. They were generally either waxed or impregnated and you were happy if anything was still dry after a prolonged downpour. The first proper waterproofs weighed a ton and as for their breathability…? Let’s be honest – they tried hard but were better in theory than in practice. And yet the idea itself was an important one. The eventual introduction of materials that were both waterproof and breathable was an important milestone and a pioneering achievement. The concept of a jacket that could keep out the rain and still allow sweat to escape revolutionised the entire outdoor clothing industry. Our first TEXAPORE jackets, the RAINY DAYS, the CENTURY and the aforementioned CHO O YU, each represented a new departure in terms of detailing, but it was the common element of TEXAPORE that gave them their core features: waterproof, windproof and breathable. However, it soon became clear that even the German DIN standards were no longer sufficient; further improvements were needed. Critical areas like the shoulders were often subjected to greater water pressures, so the performance had to be improved. Thus began a product development race which has continued to deliver results for you, the customer, right up to the present day. This is predominantly due to the fact that we decided to go our own way at a very early stage. There was certainly no shortage of ideas. Rather than hitching our cart to the conventional membrane suppliers, we chose to do our own thing and design our very own material. TEXAPORE was the result and we haven’t looked back since. Instead of waiting to be drip fed by the often painfully slow research and development cycles of third-party companies, we were

We have dedicated nearly thirty years to this process and now draw on a profound level of experience, which is invested in every new product we design. We are constantly extending the bound aries of membrane technology and combining different materials to create new hybrid solutions. For example, 2.5-ply technology which protects the membrane by using laminated dots instead of a full protective film or coating. This increases breathability and at the same time makes it possible to produce alpine jackets weighing in at only 370 g. Should a TEXAPORE product reach the end of its useful life at some point in the distant future, it can be simply be disposed of along with the rest of your household waste. This is because all our polyurethane membranes and coatings are disposable within the normal industrial disposal process. But it is not just the coatings and laminates that are outstanding. Its only when it comes to the technical detailing part of the process that the final touches are applied to the product. For example, did you know that every TEXAPORE jacket has on average 25 metres of taping applied to its seams using special machines, to ensure that every seam is 100 % waterproof? Or that we define the individual specifications of every single stitch used on our TEXAPORE jackets? That nearly all our 2-ply jackets have a small section of mesh lining stitched into the collars and wrists to prevent water ingress and the ‘rising damp’ effect? That our product ranges now feature more than 10 different types of hoods, each designed for a specific area of use? Or that we now use lasers rather than stitching to cut and seal sections at critical wear points of the jackets? Just a few examples, which might also explain why there are so many different models in this catalogue. Developing tailored solutions for so many diverse types of activity generates a wide variety of products. In the end though, the TEXAPORE jackets on the pages that follow are essentially answers to questions which are constantly being redefined. But no matter how different our 2010 TEXAPORE products might look or sound, there are three attributes that you will always be able rely on: they are all waterproof, windproof and breathable. We’d be only too happy to explain the rest in more detail. p.s. Even the best ‘power horse’ will only run as fast as you let it. What we mean is, for our TEXAPORE jackets to be able to “breathe” effectively the condensed sweat has to be able to escape from the body. Wearing cotton next to the skin means that there is no way this can happen. As pleasant as it might be in everyday clothing, cotton should never be worn for activities such as mountaineer ing or trekking. It traps sweat next to the skin, resulting in undercooling and energy loss. Ideally, a proper first layer should be worn, such as our DRYBASE and functional base layer products.

A VISION COMES TRUE

bout fifteen years ago I originated a “vision group” at Jack Wolfskin, whose task it was to dream up products that ought to exist one day. A waterproof and breathable stretch fabric was one such dream. Back then, the idea of making membranes and coatings elasticated without damaging them seemed almost impossible. However, the potential advantages of such products were obvious: with a body-hugging cut they would, on the one hand, save weight; they would provide considerably more freedom of movement when used for mountain sports apparel; and the comfort of the garment would naturally be significantly enhanced, whilst retaining full-spec weather protection. Just a few years later we fulfilled this dream with the advent of the first generation of TEXAPORE STRETCH fabrics. It was used sparingly at first, in the form of small format active stretch inserts in some of our trousers and at critical stretch points on some of our high-end mountain jackets. Over the years, in collaboration with our fabric suppliers’ various R&D departments, we have continually expanded this development and driven it forwards. And when I eventually got to wear our MUDDY PASS soft shell for the first time on a longer mountain tour a while ago I was so impressed by it that I realised we just had to make it in a fully waterproof version. That’s how it is with good product ideas – sometimes they just cry out to be reproduced! With the recent introduction of the eco-friendly, recycled version of our 2-layer TEXAPORE STRETCH we now have at our disposal a soft, very stretchy and yet very robust fabric. The MUDDY PASS provided the blueprint for the CATARACT and the rest was quickly done. The fruit of our labours is an “enhanced” TEXAPORE version of our original product. Selecting a hood from our “modular system” and incorporating it into the jacket did not present any problems. Ultimately, to purely outward appearances, the MUDDY PASS (see pages 88 - 89) and the CATARACT are closely related – a deliberate move on our part – yet each is an independent product with its own specific attributes. The choice is yours!

THE IDEA BEHIND IT

he EXPOSURE is the jacket I most frequently reach for. How can a brand new jacket already be my favourite, you might ask? Simple. During the development phase I was able to test a few of the prototypes (I took one with me on our last big trip to Ladakh). Also, the jacket is not really that new at all. Like many of our products, the EXPOSURE JACKET is based on predecessor models but in this case we have made so many improvements that we have also given it a brand new name. The basic concept goes right back to one of the very first TEXAPORE jackets we ever made, the CHO O YU. What I like about the jacket is its medium length, unfussy cut. It has a no frills, understated style with everything you need and nothing you don’t: large, raised pockets that you can use fully when carrying a pack; venting zippers (of course); comfort-enhanced detailing, e.g. nylon lined sleeves that slip on smoothly (great!); a perfectly fitting fixed hood, which is tailored as part of the jacket. I like the hood: it’s simple, it works and it doesn’t get in the way. The really special feature of this jacket, however, is the one you can’t see – TEXAPORE HYPROOF. The “mother” of the EXPOSURE, my green and purple CHO O YU, would turn even greener with envy at this fabric! With a 50,000 mm hydrostatic head rating, it really does provide “armour plated” waterproofness – yet it is also super-light and robust. It’s all in the name: no matter how exposed you are to the weather, the EXPOSURE will do the business!

“The underlying concept of the HARD MOVE is to provide reliable weather protection for all possible types of high octane outdoor activities. During the developmental phase, two things quickly became apparent: 1. The main fabric had to be robust TEXAPORE TASLAN, since durability was part of the concept. 2. The jacket had to have stretch inserts, as freedom of movement was also an important consideration. And since mobility in the shoulder area is frequently an issue, this whole section is now made from stretch fabric, which is great

for steep via ferratas and the like. We were still kicking ideas around when we hit upon the idea of extending the stretch fabric into the hood of the jacket. This was the logical extension of the jacket’s concept. Our team experimented with various fabrics until we finally came up with the ideal solution for the lower part of the hood. This section is now elasticated, too, which means that as long as it is adjusted correctly (a simple matter with the drawcords), the hood allows an unimpaired field of vision, even when wearing a helmet.”

TEXAPORE High-end weather protection by JACK WOLFSKIN Our fabric names generally consist of three parts. Let us take TEXAPORE TASLAN 2L as an example. The first part, “TEXAPORE”, refers in this case to the internal layer, which renders the fabric completely waterproof and allows moisture vapour (i.e. sweat) to pass through it (= ‘breathable’). Depending on the technology employed, this layer is either a coating or a membrane (see below). The term “TASLAN” refers to the face fabric to which the TEXAPORE is bonded. It is this fabric that determines the look, the texture, the suppleness, the tearstrength and abrasion resistance and, to a large extent, the weight of the garment. The suffix “2L” denotes a 2-layer laminate, i.e. a laminate comprised of the face fabric and a TEXAPORE coating (or membrane). Our TEXAPORE fabrics are developed in close collaboration with various companies, in order to achieve the most appropriate product-specific solution. The term TEXAPORE thus incorporates various different technologies. Firstly, there are the microporous coatings, which act like a water and moisture vapour filter. The catalyst for the moisture vapour transmission is the partial temperature differential that exists between the warm inside of the garment and the cooler external atmospheric conditions. We also utilise pore-free but semi-permeable membranes. In this case, the functional attributes result from the combination of hydrophilic molecular components with the otherwise hydrophobic membrane. When you start to sweat this leads to greater humidity (i.e. a higher concentration of moisture vapour) inside your clothing than outside. This differential causes the moisture vapour molecules to be transported through the fabric to the outside. Hybrid technology consisting of a microporous coating and a pore-free membrane creates a synergy effect, which improves this moisture vapour transmission performance. The technical specifications of the different types of TEXAPORE are: TEXAPORE 4x4: a waterproof, breathable, microporous coating (hydrostatic head: 4000 mm; moisture vapour transmission rate/MVTR: 4000 g/m2/24 h) TEXAPORE: a waterproof, very breathable microporous coating (hydrostatic head: 6000 mm; moisture vapour transmission rate/MVTR: 9000 g/m2/24 h)

Depending on the use profile and the underlying concept of the garment, we use TEXAPORE 4x4, TEXAPORE, TEXAPORE O2 or TEXAPORE O3 for our weatherproof shell jackets. The various types differ in terms of construction and above all breathability and waterproofness. Bear in mind that if our shell fabric is designated as waterproof it is also by default windproof.

Here is a brief overview of the TEXAPORE fabrics featured in this catalogue, together with their specific characteristics. he Iceland tour was on! And along for the ride: great expec tations, loads of enthusiasm and the photographer. So many friends and acquaintances had told us what a amazing place it was. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d heard about Iceland's stark contrasts, its wide ex panses and its secluded wilderness.

Upon arrival in Iceland the first issue is food. Icelandic supermarkets are full of bizarre imported products from around the world... and the beer is only 2 %!

But nothing could have prepared us for the reality. On the way from the airport, heading south, we tried hard to take in just how wide this country really is. It felt like we would see 100 horses and as many sheep before a single person came into sight. Not really that surprising, given that Iceland only has 3 inhabitants per square kilometre. There is always something to see. Colours, almost too intense to be true, glittering black volcanic rock, wide green ex panses, smoke rising and falling from crevices and in the dis tance the glaciers and mountains, with the occasional volcanic eruption. As it starts to become clear that this week is going to be full of new impressions, Claudia gets the tour diary out. Everyone has place to record his or her own thoughts, to ensure they are not forgotten and clear the mind for new experiences. And there is no shortage of new things to come. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting near the mountains and our first accommodation. The tour diary already has its first entries.

Matthias: “The tracks and roads on the way to our first destination (Kerlingarfjöll) take us past bizarre, desert-like lunar landscapes. We stop at the Gullfoss, Iceland’s most famous waterfall, and are amazed by the huge amount of water. Refreshed by the spray, we drive on. Arriving in Kerlingafjöll, we unpack the rucksacks in our cosy, green troll’s hut, up in the highlands. After tea and biscuits, it's off for the first hike.” Claudia: “We walk through landscape made of red volcanic rock. It’s ice-cold and we're certainly glad for our spontaneous shopping spree to buy Icelandic woolly hats. Whenever we see a few sheep, we quietly salute them for having such warm wool. Ten minutes later and everywhere we look there is steam coming from the geysers; it smells of sulphur. We follow a vague path, cross a stream, the only route indicator we see is an arrow made of stones. There is still snow lying wherever we look. The cold whiteness provides a strange harmony with the red and brown tones in the cliffs.”

Tobi: “It’s a bumpy ride in the jeep to the next tour, the landscape has changed again, the rocks now look all crushed up. On our way up the Fannborg, we're suddenly hit by rain. Out with the TEXAPORE jackets, even though the sun is still shining. The panoramic view of the surrounding glaciers is rounded off by a perfect rainbow! On the way back to the hut we walk along a stream through a narrow valley. At the end there is a warm spring, around which someone thoughtfully built a wall to make a small pool. Mareike: “We’re sitting in the jeep on the way to the Landmannalaugar. The incredible scenery takes my breath away, even more than Tobi’s driving. The F35, a dirt road, winds its way for over an hour through lava fields, past huge boulders. The CD player jumps every time we hit a large pothole, i.e. every 30 metres. There’s mud all over the windscreen and Claudia has even given up studying the travel guide to plan the next tour. The jeep is so full that every last corner has something crammed into it.” Tobi: “The Landmannalaugar is the start and finish of the Laugavegur, Iceland’s best known trekking route. The campsite is full, so we ask around and then make a reservation at “Emil and Skuli’s” in Landmannahellir. No two areas in Iceland look the same. The untouched nature here brings with it a sense of peace and tranquility that seems so far removed from life in the city. Emil and Skuli also seem to reflect this, although Skuli obviously enjoys combining this calmness with a certain coolness, which impresses us at first. When Claudia and I try to find out if they got our reservation, they don’t speak a word more than is needed, or make a single unnecessary gesture. But before long we're sitting in their kitchen, drinking coffee and getting the lowdown on the general scheme of things. We end up staying for nearly two hours and experience the start of what is to be their incredible hospitality.” Claudia: “After getting our bags sorted out, we walk in the rain down to the lake. Attempts to catch a few fish prove fruitless even though Emil comes along and shows us another lake, where he recommends using a net. The day doesn’t end without any fish, however. Shortly after we've eaten – an excellent salad starter followed by a very respectable spaghetti Bolognese – Emil and Skuli pop by. By the light of their head torches they proudly display the catch of the day: two fine looking fish…”

... A LANDSCAPE THAT IS BIZARRE BUT BEAUTIFUL ALL AT THE SAME TIME. ... WITH PLENTY OF POTENTIAL FOR TALES OF ELVES AND TROLLS. Matthias: “After breakfast we pack essential kit into the car and head for Landmannlaugar, about half an hour’s drive away. The river crossings on the way prove to be no problem, either for the jeep or our cool-headed driver Claudia. Upon arrival, we come to the campsite that was full, it looks something like a base camp. There are school buses that have been converted into kiosks where you can buy plasters and food among other things. We just buy ourselves a map and head for the Bláhnjúkur volcano. Our ridge walk to the peak (943 m) reveals a whole spectrum of different colours.”

Claudia: “And then the landscape changes yet again. Lichen-coated black rocks, green mossy overhangs, interspersed by misty steam rising from the hot springs. It's kind of easy to believe in trolls in a place like this. If I was a troll, this is certainly where I'd want to be.... ”

Tobi: “Today, we're out in the Thorsmoerk valley. It’s bordered by glaciers on three sides. And a first for us in Iceland: trees. We set off from the Basar hut and head up through the birch woods. Enormous caves in the silvery rock faces look like they were made by giants. I’m delighted with my trekking sandals. They were so comfortable, I even wore them on the boulder fields.

... THIRTY MINUTES LATER ... BRIGHT SUNSHINE! Claudia: “The moment we stop for a rest in troll country, it starts to rain. So it’s back out with the TEXAPORE jackets and on with the hike. Down in the valley, we find a natural pool. The real trick is finding the spot where you get just the right amount of hot and cold water.

Back down in the valley, we decide to go up the Valanukur. We choose a direct route, over moss and loose stone, past countless mushrooms. By the time we reach the top, we've had it. Looking down at other walkers from the summit, it becomes clear that we chose the hardest route by far. We all need a quick snooze to recover. Then it’s back down by the normal path.”

We spend the afternoon fishing again. As a reward for our efforts, there's barbecued fish at Emil and Skuli’s that evening, lit by headtorches and numerous candles. After eating our fill, we roll out our WOLFMATS on the grass and lie back gazing up at the incredible stars. Shooting stars zip through the dark-blue night sky. Emil brings dessert out to the field. We even get to see the greenish glow of the northern lights as we retire to our huts.”

Mareike: “Our accommodation is the Fljotsdalur youth hostel. With its turf roof, it looks like it grew straight out of the earth. Surely there must be elves and trolls living nearby? In the garden, there are old boots planted with flowers. The Fljotsdalur hostel has just sixteen beds. It’s run by an English couple who spend every summer here. The recreation room has a library that is famous, despite its remote location. Apart from the travel guides and books on Iceland, there are loads of other books. All in all it's an amazingly peaceful place and a cosy hideaway. The final few days are filled with so many new impressions that it is almost impossible to take them all in. We spend our last evening in our warm dormitory, going through the photos trying to bring some order to all these experiences.”

here are many good ideas that have never really seen the light of day. I must admit that when I first occupied myself with the brilliant idea of the SOFT SHELL I did not have any great hopes for it. Basically, we too had done our bit to make life difficult for the SOFT SHELL concept, or so I reckoned. In fact, we had actually been just a hair’s breadth away from preventing it from ever becoming ready for production. Why? Well, it’s simple, really. It was all down to our TEXAPORE jackets, all of which, regardless of their specifications, are waterproof, windproof and breathable. As this remarkable range of high performance jackets became ever more specialised and sophisticated, we found ourselves setting higher and higher benchmark standards in terms of weather protection and comfort. But even the best TEXAPORE has restrictions. For example, all of the seams have to be painstakingly sealed. This is a labour-intensive process and costly, too. And even though combining various fabrics gives us a wide bandwidth of product options, by definition every TEXAPORE jacket has to be 100 % waterproof. This can be a big advantage sometimes but it is not always necessary. Also – and this is the crunch point – even the best performing TEXAPORE quality, currently our O³ version, can never breathe as well as fabrics without a membrane or those that are partially wind permeable. The SOFT SHELL concept was a fascinating idea from the start, as we opted not to compete with existing products but to create something completely new. An inherent feature of SOFT SHELLS, namely that they should be as water resistant as possible but do not necessarily need to be 100% waterproof, opened up a whole new world of possibilities. So what does the SOFT SHELL set out to be and what should it do? After several years of experience and development we still hold firm to our original definition: SOFT SHELLS offer highest possible levels of weather protection, with the focus on outstanding breathability. They deliver the highest levels of comfort and an optimised, functional cut and are designed for highly aerobic OUTDOOR activities. It’s that simple.

This opened up a whole new playground for us and provided the catalyst for a new generation of weather protection apparel. But first, a few basic principles:

With these performance criteria as the starting point, we are able to offer products that are even more tailored to specific uses, products that are always the first-choice option when long lasting protection from the rain is not the top priority. In the course of time, making SOFT SHELLS have become another of our favourite ‘disciplines’, as it opens up the possibility of creatively combining fabrics with widely differing attributes to create what we now refer to as “hybrid” products. Yet SOFT SHELLS are still predominantly conceived as independent products. If you are looking for a lightweight, well featured alpine jacket that will cope with a light shower and will, above all, provide protection from the wind and allow sweat to escape effectively, the MUDDY PASS could be the right choice for you. If your additional requirements include a little more cold weather protection, a hood that also protects your head from the wind and the weather whilst allowing a largely unimpaired field of vision, reinforced shoulder panels to combat the constant mechanical abrasion from rucksack straps and a little more room for essential items of kit, I would immediately recommend the TRAVERSE JACKET, one of my all-time favourites. If you are after more comprehensive windproofing, the FUSION might fit the bill. And with our ACTIVATE PANTS, which were originally developed for mountain sports and whose outstanding kinetic stretch performance means they really do make all the moves you make, we have probably come up with the non plus ultra in trekking pants. Their DWR treatment also means that rain simply beads up and runs off them and keeps on doing so, even during extended tours. In addition to all of this, our SOFT SHELLS are fantastic to wear as part of the all-important technical layering system. During persistent heavy downpours, when a TEXAPORE hard shell has to be worn on top, the amazing breathability of our SOFT SHELLS makes them the perfect second layer garment in the system. One of a series of frequently asked questions: “Windproof? What for?”

or hiking and mountain sports apparel, windproofing is a far more important function than waterproofness. Out there in the wild country, you are more frequently exposed to the wind than the rain and if the wind is able to penetrate your clothing the body does not have the chance to maintain its ambient temperature. This leads to undercooling and can result in exhaustion, since the body is forced to generate more heat to compensate. In short, when the wind chill effect kicks in, the fun is quickly over. So why, you might ask, can’t you just wear a TEXAPORE shell jacket? After all, TEXAPORE is windproof, too. Not a bad idea. However, if you opt for one of our specific “windproof” products you have a workable alternative with different options and performance characteristics: an independent jacket cut from different, lighter fabrics with a clean, fresh style that is unhampered by the need for hermetic seam sealing. A BLIZZARD would not be a true BLIZZARD if it was made from TEXAPORE fabrics! Windproof fabrics deliver reliable protection from the wind chill effect. We use various fabrics for our wind jackets: POLYESTER MICROFIBER RECYCLED, for example, which is extremely wind and water repellent. Then there are the fabrics which incorporate a windproof membrane: GORE WINDSTOPPER FLEECE, POLARTEC WINDBLOC FLEECE and our very own in-house development, STORMLOCK, which comes in several different versions. With STORMLOCK HYPROOF, the focus is on water repellence in addition to windproofing. The fabric itself is waterproof but since the seams do not utilise hermetic sealing technology, moisture ingress is possible during heavy rain. In the case of STORMLOCK ACTIVE, the windproofing comes from the fabric’s particularly tight weave, rather than from an internal membrane, and it also scores very high marks on the breathability scale.

CR2 JACKET The CR2 is windproof and has a basic insulation rating. The airmesh lining has a highloft structure and is extremely breathable. It traps air for warmth, functioning like a very light interlining. The lining extends up into the collar, which also provides automatic venting for excess warmth. The three pockets are positioned for unimpaired accessibility when wearing a rucksack waist belt or climbing harness. Kinetic stretch fabrics for full freedom of movement and a high breathability spec – these are the key features of our soft shell and alpine pants. A brief overview: waterproof and breathable TEXAPORE pants Our weatherproof pants (see table above) come in two different variations: >> “Overtrousers”, e.g. the ATMOSPHERE SHELL PANTS and the RAIN PANTS. These are equipped with side zips for rapid deployment when the weather suddenly turns mean. A practical back-up solution for the active outdoor person inclined to opt for a pair of soft shell pants for as long as the weather conditions allow. >> “All-day pants”, e.g. the ALL TERRAIN PANTS and the HIGHLAND PANTS. These pants do not require an additional pair of overtrousers – simply put them on and leave them on. The new ALPINE PANTS consist of a nylon fabric with an 8 % elastane content. In technical terms, this means a lengthwise elasticity of 12 %. In practice, it means superb freedom of movement.
