In Motion

1. IN MOTION [architectural design + urban strategy] 2015 1st Prize. Europan 13: The Adaptable City II Location: El Prat, Barcelona, Spain

We propose an urban strategy which allows both the city and landscape to coexist. By bringing the landscape back into our everyday lives it can become part of our cultural heritage and activate the need for its care. However, the landscape has not been destroyed by the advancing city: it waits patiently underneath the pavement. The current state of the neighbourhood shows tension between the scales of urban models, the one which was and the one that is yet to come. The project seeks for both scales to coexist. The stacked plots adhere to the high-density volume of the new neighbourhood whilst the interior of the building seeks to replicate social relations of the previous city. It is important that the building can adapt over time without costly changes. To do this the terrain and structure are built for the long-term whereas the facilities, envelopes and spatial distrubution are considered in the short-term and built with soft-technology. Part of the ground that we have given back to the landscape can be stacked into slabs equipped to act as plots ready to be developed by the neighbours.

2. ITINERARY STUDIO [design + fabrication] 2015 Anywhere

This project set out to create a 1:10 replica of the studio depicted in St. Jerome in his Study by Antonello da Messina (1475). St. Jerome, the protagonist of the painting, was responsible for the translation of the Bible into Latin. This task would have required St. Jerome to travel to specific points of Christian history to retrieve Holy Scriptures. In the painting only one side of the study is shown and therefore we reimagined what was on the other side and created an elevated private prayer room. We recreated the studio to be a flat-pack piece of furniture that can be easily mounted and dissassembled for transportation.

3. LIVESEGOVIA APP [user research + UI design] 2015 Segovia, Spain

LiveSegovia is an events communication app that transmits information from event organizers to university students in a simple yet effective way. The project was developed during an urban-focused workshop during my last year at IE University. The aim of the workshop was to research and discover the reasons why the university students were not integrated into the city life. We discovered that Segovia has a rich cultural agenda that students are unaware of and that event organizers in the city were out of ideas on how to reach the students. This led to a thorough research on the existing platforms available and what the best wayis to reach the younger generation and what could be the most effective way to get this information across. The result was a tablet application which only lets the students know about events that they would be interested in. It doesn’t overload the user with information and it allows students to be selective with the categories. The application is expected to available for Fall 2016 incoming students.

4. BREAKWATER [architectural design + final thesis project] 2016 Port of Ibiza, Spain

Breakwater is a multipurpose arrival infrastructure that reintegrates the “safe-haven” back into Ibiza. It primarily provides a safe-space where LGBTQ Asylum Seekers can carry out their transition process from their initial arrival to their integration into society in a supported and safe transitional environment. It inhabits the protective wall of the Port of Ibiza and intervenes into the conflictive neighbourhood of Sa Penya. This strategic location sits at the entrance of the port and is the first sight seen by anyone who arrives to Ibiza Town by boat. The complex existing condition of the site is integrated into the project, improving and enhancing the arrival experience of the locals, fishermen and tourists too.

BUILDING LAYERS ONTO EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE

Phase 1 of Breakwater is constructed in layers along the existing Port Wall. It uses dry constructon methods which allow for the constantly growing and adapting nature of the program. The structure has to be flexible, but braced. The natural climatic conditions will expose the Port Wall to wind and big differences in temperatures and therefore the construction has to be able to breathe, expand and contract. The use load of the Upper Deck will be variable at different times. In the Summer months, when boats arrive, the loads from disembarking passengers will be high and therefore it has to be flexible. The Prefabricated units are made from Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) which allow for the quick manufacturing of the units for quick reactions to incoming asylum seekers. The materials used in the project have been selected to be suitable for the environmental conditions of the site.

In some parts of the program the prefabricated concrete wall has embedded acoustic insulation. This is to prevent noise coming from the port to the accommodation areas. The Upper Deck is an independent element with urban fixtures forming an extension of the existing public space and an attractive viewpoint.
