“At fir

st, I w to sho as scared becau w fear s never e you can be sur e how peopl e will p erceiv But I d e you. ared mysel f to do that, to sta nd ou t.” It’s a special moment when an artist comes face-toface with his icons. This was the case when Kendrick Lamar had the chance to sit down and interview N.W.A for Billboard’s new cover story. Billboard Cover: Kendrick Lamar Interviews N.W.A About Coming ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and Changing the World “Anything that I do, at all, has come from what y’all done,” Kendrick Lamar, also a native of Compton, Calif., told the group before asking them their thoughts on Lamar’s generation of rappers. Besides Lamar himself (whom Dr. Dre designated “the new king of the West Coast” in 2011), the living members of N.W.A -- comprised of Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella -- also respect Pusha T and Drake. N.W.A also discussed the impact that their late friend and group member Eazy-E (who died of AIDS in 1995) had on each one of them, and the group as a whole. “He knew before we knew what was going to pop,” explains Ren. And though Dre admits that though he and Eazy “argued night and day,” it was “always out of mutual respect. Always out of a desire to get the best. And always settled with a cool compromise.”

Kendrick Lamar Pays Tribute to N.W.A and Eazy-E: They ‘Gave Voice to the Voiceless’ “It’s a trip when I think back and remember the first time I saw these guys. I was 5. It was a video, a party scene, when suddenly this guy wearing a hat with his hair curled underneath comes busting through the set. That was Eazy-E doing “Eazy-Duz-It.” At that very moment, I realized this music represented where I was from. I looked over to my left and saw that my cousin was wearing the same kind of outfit as Eazy. Eazy was a superhero, but a superhero on the ground, a superhero I could relate to. Suddenly my pops, my uncles, everyone around me is playing N.W.A records. Seven or eight years later, when I come into my teens, I rediscover N.W.A because now I’m on the streets. I’m seeing how law enforcement is impacting my community, I’m seeing the influence of gang culture, and I’m realizing that N.W.A did a lot more than merely entertain. They told the truth. They tapped into kids in the streets who never had anything or anyone speak up for them. N.W.A gave voice to the voiceless. So now they become different kinds of heroes to me -- heroes carrying messages breaking through to the wider world, heroes not only with big hearts, but probing, intelligent minds. To be real with you, I look at myself as someone who’s deeply conflicted. The way I was raised makes up half of who I am. The second half -- the vulnerable artist curious about the world beyond Compton -- is often at war with the first half. But because of N.W.A, who showed me that an artist can be whoever he wants to be, I don’t have to resolve the conflict. I can live with it. I can be honest about it. I can put that conflict in my songs. I can open up my heart and let the world look inside. And I can do all that because back when I was still an infant crawling around my mama’s house, five cats from Compton had the courage to stand tall and represent our community with courage, honesty and artistic brilliance.” --Kendrick Lamar

NK ROCKZ the WORLD

his week P!nk accepted the award for Woman of theYear at Billboard’s annual Women in Music luncheon in New York City. What do you say when someone says, "hey! Woman of the Year!" If you're me, you think of all the other people that deserve it more. I know this is music, but these are the names that popped into my head. Hillary Clinton, Angelina Jolie, Malala Yousafzai, Miley Cyrus - if you're high as shit and you have a thing for tongues. You don't think, "oh yeah Woman of the Year? P!nk, of course." I don't, but I'm not gonna argue with you.

P!nk’s Billboard Woman of the Year Acceptance Speech I have had an incredible year, it’s been insane. It’s been blessing after blessing after blessing. Honestly, if I can be serious, and I don't really like to be, this is an incredible honor. I'm feeling really grateful. I'm feeling grateful that I've been able to participate in this game for as long as I have. I'm feeling grateful that I've been able to tell my stories. I don't know that my mom and dad are that grateful, or Carey, but it's been good for me. I'm grateful if I've kept one girl from felling different or ugly or unempowered. Here's what I wish. I wish that girls embraced their power and their worth and their value in their youth, and not sell it or barter it for anything and have to buy it back later in life. I wish for my daughter to grow up in a world where wonderful publications like Billboard celebrate them for their originality, their individuality

P!NK

Although initially viewed as another face in the late-'90s crowd of teen pop acts, Pink (professionally known as P!nk) quickly transcended and outgrew that label with her combination of pop songcraft and powerhouse, rock-influenced vocals. Born Alecia Moore on September 8, 1979, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, P!nk received her nickname as a child, years before she dyed her hair accordingly. She grew up in a musical family and was a regular on the Philadelphia club scene by the age of 13, first as a dancer and then as a backing vocalist for the local hip-hop group Schoolz of Thought. At 14, she began writing her own songs; the same year, a local DJ at Club Fever began inviting her on-stage to sing a song every Friday. P!nk was spotted one night by an executive for MCA Records, who asked her to audition for an R&B group called Basic Instinct. Although P!nk’s strong vocals landed her the gig, the group imploded not long after. She was quickly recruited for a female R&B trio called Choice, who signed to L.A. Reid and Babyface’s LaFace label on the strength of their demo; however, they too disbanded due to differences over musical direction. August 15, 2015 | www.billboard.blz | 11

Holds best Video Music Award for Video of the Year and Best Collab Artist Award for ‘Just Give Me A Reason’.

Released in 2000, the album was a double-platinum hit; it spun off three Top Ten singles in “There U Go,” “Most Girls,” and “You Make Me Sick.” As she set about working on her follow-up album, P!nk took part in the remake of Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” featured on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, which also featured powerhouse divas Christina Aguilera, Mya, and Lil’ Kim. The song was a massive hit, topping the charts in both the U.S. and U.K. while expanding P!nk’s own audience. Toward the end of the year, P!nk released her next single, “Get the Party Started,” which climbed into the Top Five and became the singer’s most inescapable hit to date. Her accompanying sophomore album, M!ssundaztood, quickly went double platinum; it boasted a more personal voice and an eclectic sound, plus heavy contributions from ex-4 Non Blondes singer Linda Perry, who helped bring some more rock muscle to P!nk’s sound (as did guest appearances by Steven Tyler and Richie Sambora). M!ssundaztood attracted positive critical notices as well, and its second single, “Don’t Let Me Get Me,” became another fast-rising Top Ten hit. P!nk next issued Try This in November 2003.

The album continued her progression toward more rock-oriented material, due in part to the songwriting collaboration of Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong on eight of the album’s tracks. Try This’ lead single, “Trouble,” cracked the upper regions of Billboard’s Top 40 and earned P!nk a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. On the home front, P!nk wed motocross racer Carey Hart -- whom she had initially met at 2001’s X-Games -- on January 7, 2006, in Costa Rica.

Singer Janelle Monáe became an R&B sensation in with the release of her futuristic albums The ArchAndroid and The Electric Lady. Singer Janelle Monáe Robinson was born on December 1, 1985, in Kansas City, Kansas. Her mother was a janitor and her father was a garbage truck driver who struggled with drug addiction throughout Monáe’s childhood. “I come from a very hard working-class family who make nothing into something,” she says. Monáe’s hardscrabble background and early experiences with the perils of drug addiction inspired her intense drive to succeed. “I’ve never forgotten where I come from,” she says. “It’s crazy, but I really want to be the one to show everyone back home that it can be done. And not by selling drugs but by being passionate about the right thing—and the right things will come your way.” She pays homage to her parents with a signature black-and-white tuxedo she wears for every performance. “I call it my uniform,” she explained. “My mother was a janitor and my father collected trash, so I wear a uniform too.”

Her next album, I’m Not Dead, appeared that April; its first single, “Stupid Girls,” quickly became a hit, while “Who Knew” and “U + Ur Hand” both cracked the Top Ten. I’m Not Dead reached platinum status in several countries and helped ramp up anticipation for for P!nk’s follow-up, Funhouse, which arrived in October 2008.

“So What,” the album’s leadoff single, became her first number one hit since “Lady Marmalade.” Another hit, “Please Don’t Leave Me,” followed in 2009 and all her hits were collected on the 2010 release Greatest Hits...So Far!!!, which was preceded by the single “Raise Your Glass.” Around the time of the release of Greatest Hits...So Far!!!, P!nk announced that she and her husband were expecting their first child. In September 2012, P!nk released her sixth studio album, The Truth About Love. With production from Greg Kurstin, Butch Walker, Max Martin, Dan Wilson, and others, it became her first number one album in America and earned platinum status in half a dozen countries. The singles “Blow Me (One Last Kiss),” “Try,” and “Just Give Me a Reason” all hit the Top Ten in the U.S., and the last became her fourth number one hit in America. P!nk mounted a yearlong tour through Australia, Europe, and North America, and at the end of 2013 she was named Woman of the Year by Billboard. August 15, 2015 | www.billboard.blz | 14

“EMBRACE what makes you

UNIQUE,

Even if it makes others uncomfortable.”

From a very young age, Monáe distinguished herself as a highly artistic and intelligent child. She stood out as a singer at the local Baptist church and appeared in local productions of musicals such as The Wiz and Cinderella. In addition to singing and performing, Monáe was also a precocious young writer. She joined Kansas City’s Coterie Theater Young Playwrights’ Round Table and wrote several full-length plays and musicals. One script, completed when she was only 12 years old, told the story of a boy and girl who compete for the love of a plant—an idea inspired by Stevie Wonder’s 1979 album Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants. “I was infatuated with photosynthesis,” she offered by way of explanation. After graduating from F.L. Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Monáe received a scholarship to study musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, where she was the only black woman in her class. However, Monáe quickly dropped out of the Academy because she felt creatively stifled. “I wanted to write my own musicals,” she recalled. “I didn’t want to have to live vicariously through a character that had been played thousands of times—in a line with everybody wanting to play the same person.”

The Electric Lady is the second studio album by American recording artist Janelle Monáe, released on September 6, 2013 by Wondaland Arts Society and Bad Boy Records.

A debut song together, Janelle Monae w/R&B Soul Legend, Erykah Badu “Q.U.E.E.N” released in 2013. Won NAACP Outstanding Song.

Monáe’s big break came in 2005, at the age of 20, when she performed Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly With His Song” at an open mic night. Big Boi, one half of the famous hip-hop duo OutKast, was in the audience and was thoroughly impressed with Monáe’s performance. He featured Monáe on two tracks, “Time Will Reveal” and “Lettin’ Go,” from the hip-hop group Purple Ribbon All-Stars’ album Got Purp? Vol. II, released later that year. A year later, in 2006, OutKast featured Monáe on two more songs, “Call the Law” and “In Your Dreams,” from its popular and acclaimed album Idlewild. After her work on Idlewild, Monáe set out to create her own music with the help of her two partners in the Wondaland Arts Society. Her 2007 EP, Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase), attracted the attention of the famous producer Diddy (Sean “Puffy” Combs), who signed Monáe to his Bad Boy Records label and released and promoted the EP. In an interview with MTV, Diddy said, “I was looking for things that were different and innovative. Because if you’re a leader in this industry you want to be helping to push it forward, and she’s an artist that would help to push it forward.”

Top 20 Hits

Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase) reached No. 115 on the Billboard Album Charts, and its lead single, “Many Moons,” received a Grammy nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. With her beautiful and powerful voice and boundless creativity, Monáe is a rising star in contemporary R&B. After only having released her debut album, she received two Grammy nominations and counted Diddy, Big Boi, Bruno Mars, Prince and—reportedly—President Barack Obama among her admirers. “People that worked in his campaign have told us he is very aware of me,” she said of the president. “He’s a fan.” In 2013, Monáe released her second album, The Electric Lady, which also received rave reviews. The album stays consistent with the theme of her debut, taking listeners on a musical journey alongside Cindi Mayweather. The album, which featured appearances by fellow respected R&B artists such as Miguel, Solange, Prince and Erykah Badu, did better than its popular predecessor, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Top 200. Monáe also gained recognition at the 2013 Billboard Women in Music event, having been given Billboard’s Rising Star Award. She also made her debut as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live in October 2013, alongside host Edward Norton. “I feel like I do have a responsibility to the community,” Monáe said. “The music that we create is to help free their minds and, whenever they feel oppressed, to keep them uplifted. We want the music and the vision that we have to be their choice of drug, if you will. So we need a manifesto. If we want to stay on message, we have to believe in what we’re fighting for, and we do.”
