JADE’s Annual Report aims at sharing with all our members, partners, and stakeholders the achievements of the European and global Junior Enterprise movement over the last year.

2

As a Network, JADE can reach every year new heights only thanks to the collaboration of a number of different stakeholders: once a year, we want to take the chance to thank them all, to make a point on the current situation of the Junior Enterprise network in Europe and beyond, and to set even more daring targets for the year to come.

Annual Report 2017/2018

Foreword If we want to success, we need to fight for the right purpose, as a team, and according to a plan. If we want to succeed, we need to fight for the right purpose. We found in the Junior Enterprise concept our way to empower thousands of students and to make them the driving force pushing for a better future and better world. More than 28 thousand students in Europe embrace this call to action daily. Their efforts drive JADE’s motivation to fight for a better education.

Diogo Parreira JADE President

It is my team’s pleasure to present to you the JADE

Annual Report 2017/2018 and to share with you some of the accomplishments JADE

and our Network have achieved.

It was an honour to represent and enhance the Impact of Junior Enterprises. Ad Maiora.

3

If we want to succeed, we need to discover and re-discover the power of synergy. We discovered in our Network the strength to dare to challenge our own limits. We are building upon our differences a common strategy that boosts our development in 21 countries by 2021. We are leading the Network towards a brighter future. If we want to succeed, we need to explore our potential and convert our dreams into our goals; strategies into actions. We have clear JADE’s potential and we defined the roadmap that will lead us to deliver more added-value. We are working with all our stakeholders on offering the Junior Enterprise experience to more students and to generate an impact that matters. The precious legacy we received from more than 50 years of a success story motivated the new milestones we have achieved. We look at the future with an exciting view, believing that together, we will continue to grow and to achieve new heights.

After one intensive year, I am proud of our legacy and I trust in the future of JADE.

Make sure that the impact you want to have tomorrow, is only a result of the actions you are taking today.

Europe's Junior Enterprises are leading the way.

By helping young people to develop both technical competence and soft skills - the ability to solve problems, communicate, work in a team, manage time and show leadership - you are nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs. You are building a vital partnership between higher education and the world of work, ensuring that teaching and learning adapt to our fast-changing economy. The European Commission is proud to support your efforts. Our Investment Plan for Europe is improving financing opportunities for new entrepreneurs and start-ups. Our new Skills Agenda for Europe will help young people to acquire the right mix of skills. Our programme, Erasmus+, will help more than four million young people to study, train, work and volunteer in another country. I have no doubt that Europe's Junior Enterprises will take full advantage of these opportunities. Thanks

to your efforts, our future is a bright one. __

Bridging the gap between education and the labour market and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset is vital – for policy-makers as well as for business and civil society. The work of

organisations like the European Confederation of Junior Enterprises (JADE) has an important part to play in this.

I would like to express my strong support to

them and all the Junior Enterprises across Europe; through their daily activities, they

support young people in developing valuable skills, boosting their entrepreneurial spirit and ensuring a smooth transition to the job market. This is an excellent way to help ensure that Europe fully taps its most precious resource: the talent of its people.

Our Network

A Junior Enterprise is a non-profit organization, formed and managed exclusively by university students, which provides services for companies, institutions and individuals. Junior Enterprises are similar to real companies, with the main goal of enhancing the learning of their members through practical experiences. To promote the learning by doing philosophy

To develop entrepreneurial skills

To encourage a business education approach

Students learn how to strategically manage and develop a company by working in their Junior Enterprise.

Recognizing opportunities, planning, implementing and generating results – Junior Enterprises are a lab to develop skills.

The learnings from classes are put into practice, through hands-on projects addressing complex business challenges and upto-date market trends.

To enhance students’ employability

To foster social and economic growth

Junior Enterprises form committed and skilled students, enhancing their employability rate up to 20 percentage points.

Fostering growth in the local SMEs and creating more businesses (2x more propensity), students learn and deliver concrete results.

Our Junior Entrepreneurs are bright motivated young people willing to take a step forward to improve not only their own education and skills but also the world around them. They chose to dedicate a large part of their time, alongside their studies, to the development of their Junior Enterprises, to the realization of projects for their clients, and to the recruitment and the training of those that after them will manage the organization. They impact their peers, by

inspiring them in challenging their limits and push forward the boundaries of their university education. But they also impact the society and the (business) environment around them: they

offer accessible consultancy services to small companies and SMEs, helping them to pursue upto-date trends, expand their business and grow at European and global level.

The Junior Entrepreneurs are one

of the driving forces of change in today’s Europe, working every day

not only to become better professionals but also better (European) active citizens. By being exposed to such experiences, Junior Entrepreneurs are aware of the challenges of our today’s world and work hard to find their solutions and role

Annual Report 2017/2018

JADE outlook JADE is the umbrella organization that represents, integrates and supports the

European Network of Junior Enterprises Enhancing the Network. Since 1992.

JADE is a students NGO based in Brussels, from where we coordinate the activities in our 14 countries and with other international Confederations of Junior Enterprises.

We work closely with corporate partners, as well as with the European institutions to influence policy-making on entrepreneurial education, sustainable development and social economy. JADE is a bottom-up organization: the Junior Entrepreneurs choose the leaders of their Junior Enterprises to guide the organization, manage the relationship with clients and suppliers, partners and in general all the external stakeholders.

At the national level, the Junior Enterprises elect their country representatives, who work to promote the JE concept and answer the needs of their Junior Enterprises at country-level. Each country elects its International Manager, responsible for ensuring effective communication between the national and the European level, JADE. All the national representatives

elect the JADE Executive Board

which, from Brussels, represents the European Network and keeps the relationship with the partners, institutions, and the other confederations in the world.

The Junior Enterprise concept crossed the European borders in 1988, when the first Brazilian Junior Enterprise was created. Since then, it has been enlarged to America and Asia. In 2016, JADE, together with other international Confederations founded the Junior Enterprise Global Council. This leaders’ structure aims to connect, enlarge and support the Junior Enterprise Network at the global level, while fostering and strengthening the JE concept. It is today the main

accelerator of the concept expansion, all around the world. 13

The goal number 4, “Quality of Education” is defined as: “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Within this statement, the Junior

Enterprise concept can play a key role: a student NGO, exclusively run by students, which provides services to companies and organizations with the main goal of developing the skills of its members. Junior Enterprises complement every day the education of more than 50.000 young people with a hands-on experience, boosting their employability, their willingness to start a business. JADE believes that, due to the important role that Junior Enterprises are playing, it is important that we call our

Network to take action and help them to acknowledge their impact. The Global Goals are

meant to be achieved by 2030: but is this possible without the involvement of the next generation of adults?

JADE is working to enlarge the Junior Enterprise concept into more countries in Europe. We contact universities, professors, companies and institutions, students and students’ associations to help us find the

right students to create a Junior Enterprise. Supported by the European Commission, JADE travelled to Croatia and to Bulgaria to, during the University-Business Forum, introduce the JE concept to more universities and to foster the creation of more Junior Enterprises.

A brighter future Europe’s Junior Enterprises are leading the way. Thanks to your

efforts, our future is a bright one. __ Jean-Claude Juncker President of the European Commission

25 years after the first Junior Enterprise was founded, 6

Confederations realised it was time to create a European structure to develop the Network. JADE was, therefore, founded in 1992. Now, after 25 years of JADE, we realised that defining a strategy only for JADE (organizational strategy) is not enough to foster the growth we all have desired. We believe that if we define common goals – to be achieved by each one of the JADE Members – we will be growing at a much faster rate and accomplish a more assertive development for the European JE Network. That is the definition of Network Strategy: a plan that will shape the future of the entire Network – Confederations and Junior Enterprises – committing them towards shared goals and convictions; a single direction to a

Additionally, JADE will focus on three

internal goals to develop itself as an organization: (I) Recruit and develop a high-

achieve outstanding results.

“Throughout the more than 50 years of history of the Junior Enterprise concept, we have worked to leave our mark in the way entrepreneurship is delivered through higher education. We wanted our impact to be felt in three major levels of our life, these being the academia, business world and also our very own society. It is by undertaking an entrepreneurial approach through these levels that personal development can be seen in Junior entrepreneurs. This team is more than ever committed to strengthening the network, because we believe that the network itself is the major force that can lead us to have an even greater impact. And this is the DNA of a Junior Entrepreneur.” __ David Gomes
