GEOGRAPHY
Tropical monsoon climate plays a big role in the city. It features a lengthy wet, heavy rainy season from May–October and dry season occurs from November–April where rainfall is rare.
HISTORY Yangon was founded as Dagon in the early 11th century by the Mon. King Alaungpaya in 1755 conquered Dagon and renamed “Yangon.” British colonized Yangon from 1824–1945, and transformed into commercial and political hub of British Burma. The country gained independence in 1948. After independence, Yangon expanded upwards and became one of the leading countries in South East Asia. However, General Ne Win, who started a military coup against the government, took over the country in 1962. With its rule for almost 30 years, country lived under brutal military dictatorship suffering from fabricated elections, censorship in media, increased sanctions and no access to education. In 2011– until now, Burmese democratic reforms are in process of improving political, economic and administrative reforms in Burma undertaken by the military-backed government.
