SARANG GLOBAL MINISTRY CENTER Seoul, South Korea 2009 - 2013
ROLE: SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER With a site area of 6,782 square meters and a programmed building area of 66,576 square meters, the Church in Seoul is an exercise in high density design. This urban site must accommodate over 40,000 people every Sunday, the majority of whom arrive by subway. The design called for a 6,500 seat worship sanctuary, offices for the church’s global ministry, a 300 seat chapel, fellowship / classroom spaces, 250 parking spaces and a public plaza. The design solution features the worship sanctuary underground, covered only by the public plaza, and sky above. Flanking the worship center on the North and South, the remaining program is projected upwards into two towers that are unified at three levels with a sky bridge. To give further emphasis on the sky above, the massing of the two towers and sky bridge is extruded at an angle about the elliptical plaza, and wrapped in clear vision glass to give unobstructed views inside and out.

SITE + CONTEXT Site Access
The towers are accessible from nearly every angle via the central plaza and surrounding street. The plaza also steps down to allow public access from the subway entrance.
Building Circulation
Vertical circulation is placed on the west facing facade, mitigating solar heat gain, while allowing visual and circulation access to the street and subway station to the North and East. The sky bridge on levels 2-5 connects the towers.
Community Spaces
With a large portion of the program underground, the design gave way to a large public space. The central plaza connects the surrounding site to public transit through the subway entrance. Community spaces within the building surround and look onto the public plaza.

SUNSHADE STUDIES
To further unify the composition of the two glass towers, an aluminum solar screen wraps and shades the large fellowship spaces. Solar studies were carried out to inform the composition, density, and angles of the sunshades.

NS HOME SHOPPING MIXED-USE Pangyo, South Korea 2012 - 2015
ROLE: SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER
17
The 250,000 sf building is located in the newly developed office area, Pangyo, near Seoul, South Korea. Primarily functioning as a seven story parking garage for both cars and bicycles, the client also sought to provide a vibrant gathering place. With an active retail zone on two levels, one underground, and park like public space in front, the building serves the workers who spend long hours at the office and often decompress in establishments close by before commuting home. The retail base is laid out to organize and integrate the various uses and circulation while bringing the maximum amount of natural light to the lower levels. The ďŹ nal component of the project is a TV studio for production of the NS Home Shopping network on the upper level. In an attempt to harmonize the distinctive elements, we took inspiration from a wrap dress or skirt. The carefully patterned metal fabric skin thus envelops the garage body and is lifted at the main corners to open up to the retail. The skin is illuminated by LEDs which serve to reinforce the place as a vibrant and active destination.

JOYFUL COMMUNITY CENTER Pohang, South Korea 2010 - 2014
ROLE: SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER
39
The Joyful Community Center’s vision was to have a design that expressed a strong symbolic Christian message, but that also used traditional Korean symbols in a fusion of architecture, faith and culture. The location was a 10 acre site in a new town development area of Pohang. The site had many development challenges including steep, wooded hillsides and strict zoning limitations. The solution provided a 383,500 SF design that integrated into the landscape with gently flowing lines which wrapped around a large central plaza. Spaces included a 2700-seat auditorium, 800-seat performance hall, cafeteria, cafe, library, fitness facilities, children’s and youth spaces, community services facilities and a 350 car underground parking garage. Placement of the buildings into the natural hillsides and careful orientation of the windows allowed ample natural light into the spaces while providing greater energy efficiency. Forms and patterns in the architecture were inspired by traditional Korean crafts and calligraphy, and the use of natural materials and colors further harmonized the entire building into its unique place.

HARIM IKSAN OFFICE Iksan, South Korea 2014
ROLE: SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER For one of its local affiliate offices, Harim Group’s vision is to have a building that expresses their desire for sustainability and the care they demonstrate for their employees and citizens. The company wants to provide interconnected green spaces throughout the building that will be open to the public as well as give employees easy access to the gardens during office hours. It is also a desire to have open and comfortable day lit office space and with much care being given to the solar control on the building exteriors. Initial studies called for either a ten story tower or four story low rise office building. The selected solution provides for an 86,000 SF design that has two L shaped interlocking forms in a five story envelope that helps to create a variety of outdoor green space and plazas between the two forms. The entire facade of building is designed with specific percentages of alternating glass and insulated wall to allow maximum natural light on the desirable south side of the building and protect the northern facades from exposure to the cold. East and west facades contain vertical fins that block glare from the east and west sun. Spaces include an upscale employee dining area with two story waterfall and views to the garden and city, veterinary hospital, pharmaceutical lab, fitness facilities, open office spaces, underground parking garage, and additional 86,000 SF of storage.

PET FOOD FACTORY AND VISITOR CENTER Gongju, South Korea 2012
ROLE: SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER Harim Group’s new Pet Food Factory and Visitor’s Center includes a total automated clean factory, Happy Dance Studio, offices, conference rooms, cafeteria, display and store spaces, auditorium and security building on a new property in Gongju, South Korea. It was perhaps the most anticipated development of a clean, sustainable and automated pet food factory in South Korea in recent years. The facility will provide much-needed pet food manufacturing space and is expected to attract pet owners to see the clean facility and experience how pet food is made for their beloved dog or cat. To attract visitors, Beck created a concept called “where is my food”, that makes it easy for dog and cat owners to peer inside the factory through windows and see how the food is made. Pet owners will also enjoy the pet friendly park outside the cafeteria and the pet store and will enjoy the natural light at the pet friendly café located next to the courtyard.

FAITH BAPTIST CHURCHB Artesia, New Mexico 2015
ROLE: SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER Faith Baptist Church has had great success and growth in its ministry. Their mission is to help begin, build and, broaden people’s relationship with God and others. Faith Baptist partnered with Beck to further this mission by building an addition on their original facility. The expansion includes 33,000 SF of new worship, administration and nursery space. Beck created prominent entrances in strategic spots to strengthen the connection with the surrounding community. The entrances lead to a lobby space that hosts more intimate gatherings and encourages interaction before and after services. Services are now held in the new 900 seat worship center, which is designed to foster interpersonal relations with seating that allows members to have simultaneous views of the stage and to one another. The ambience of the worship center was designed to be flexible. Faith Baptist has the choice to have a dark room that showcases worship though color changing LED lighting or a room with natural light pouring in through two large window systems. The resulting space is unique and playful that matches the characteristics of the attendees of Faith Baptist Church and the people of Artesia, New Mexico.

FIRST BAPTIST DALLAS Dallas, Texas 2008 - 2013
ROLE: SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER
Established in 1868, First Baptist Dallas grew over the next 140 years to become the largest landowner in downtown with extensive facilities including its historic sanctuary constructed in 1891. The congregation always remained committed to downtown, avoiding the suburban flight of many churches. However when facing a new century with aging, ineffective and unwelcoming facilities, church leadership decided that a transformation was essential. The church imagined transformation of its campus by reduction, restoration and renewal.
93
94
Recognizing Its civic responsibilities, the church chose to give over significant areas of its land as an urban park with community-focused spaces. The new 1.4 acre garden plaza actively connects the green spaces of the recently finished Deck Park and Arts District with new and existing parks in the center of town.

To make room for the new worship center and to update the entire facilities it was decided to tear down the fortress like collection of buildings on the southern block.
The main floor of the worship room is lifted up to provide an urban cut underneath the atrium. This also allows for ground level retail, offices and service zones.
