Buh-Bye 2012! Hello 2013 With a new year many of us find ourselves in a reflective mood, reminiscing on our challenges and achievements of 2012. Friends made and lost, the new ventures we started, personal and school challenges and the pleasures of our summer. 2012 was truly a remarkable year in terms of local and International achievements. Usain Bolt retained his 100m and 200m Olympic titles in record breaking times, there was the 200m Trifecta of Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, and Warren Weir, and Hansel Parchment who became the first Jamaican sprint hurdler to medal at the Olympic Games. Jamaica also celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Last year also saw the Us Election with a close call, Barack Obama winning 332 to Mitt Romney’s 206 had the majority of the American population at the edge of their seats as well as the interested Jamaicans. In Late October Hurricane Sandy visited Jamaica and parts of the United States leaving significant damage such as flooded streets. We’ve seen the exchange rate skyrocket from $86 to $90 Jamaican for one American dollar in only a couple of months and Prime Minister Portia’s renegotiation of the International Monetary Fund. 2012 like many other years had its crisscross, loop holes and joys, for the new year are things to consider:
1.
With ten being satisfied; On a scale of 1-10, How satisfied are you with 2012?
2.
year?
What are your biggest accomplishments this
by Renee Johnson
3.
Out of all the things that happened in 2012, what are the biggest things you have learned?
4.
What lessons did you learn the hard way?
5.
What is your biggest regret? We all have regrets whether we want to admit it, there is always going to be one mistake we wish to undo.
6.
Which did you do more of? Smile or cry? What made the biggest difference in your life?
7.
What are you grateful for?
8.
What risks did you take? “If you’ve done what you’ve always done you’ll get what you’ve always got”, You got to risk it to know what you can achieve.
9.
What is your motto for the New Year?
10.
What are your biggest goals that you want to achieve this year?
11.
What will you do more of this year to succeed at an even greater level?
12.
Have you improved as a person? Are you closer to the person who you want to be? These question are for you to reflect on and answer yourself honestly about the dealings of 2012 and so to better 2013! JAE Magazine | JANUARY 2013

13 Key Habits To Help You “Seize the Day” Personal development statesman, Paul J. Meyer, shares his “baker’s dozen” on how to get the most out of life. I believe there are certain habits that will enable us to live life to its fullest, making the most of every opportunity. These habits are not personality traits! They are little choices that we internalize into habits. Here are 13 of my favorite habits that help me seize each day:
1.
Be an inverted paranoid: I believe the whole world is conspiring to do only good things to me.
2.
Be a quick forgiver: I don’t have time to waste in unforgiveness.
3.
Be optimistic: Believing the best of people and circumstances is a sure way to find the best.
4.
Be thankful: I always give thanks, keep my eyes on God as my provider, and keep a smile on my face.
5. 18
Be an encourager: Encouragers make me feel better, stronger, and more capable of
JANUARY 2013 | JAE Magazine
accomplishing my dreams. I want to do the same for others.
6.
Be spontaneous: I have a sense of urgency and a do-it-now attitude.
7.
Be a giver: My greatest joy is giving!
8.
Be positive: Being positive has the potential of turning the worst situations into victories.
9.
Smile a lot and laugh at life: Adversity is a steppingstone, not a roadblock. Why not laugh in the midst of the challenges?
10.
Live life with enthusiasm: I will only live once, so why not give it my all?
11.
Enjoy life: I truly enjoy life.
12.
Find a hobby you enjoy: No matter where I am, I have something I like to do.
13.
Look for people to help: I get up every morning excited about the person I might help that day.

he found his calling RUPTION IN THE INDUSTRY by Ashley Henry
Rogen Walker more popularly known as Ruption is one of the top graphic artists and videographers in Jamaica. The man behind RD Studios, his knowledge of post-production, coupled with his natural artistic flair, makes any project he works on stand out from the crowd. 22
JANUARY 2013 | JAE Magazine
Q.
WHERE DID YOUR NICKNAME ‘RUPTION’ COME FROM?
RUPTION: I used to be a “Deejay/Ghost Writer” for some dancehall artistes and while in the studio spitting some lyrics the War Lord said “Yute yuh too bad, yuh cant have a name like Fudgy, yuh name Ruption! Yallow!”
Q.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DESIGNING?
RUPTION: I’ve been doing it about 9 years, I started at about 17 years old.
#PASSION #DESIGN #FOCUSED #MAKE IT HAPPEN!
I do prefer to be behind the camera. Not a fan of the spotlight.
Q.
WHEN DID RD STUDIOS START AND WITH WHO?
RUPTION: RD Studios officially started 3 years ago with my business partner Jermaine Wellington.
Q. WHAT CHALLENGES DID
YOU FACE GETTING INTO THE INDUSTRY?
RUPTION: Seeing that I came up through one of the top advertising agencies in Jamaica (Dunlop Corbin), the experience gained and the links formed from my association with the music industry made it relatively
smooth. It wasn’t overnight success. Lots of hard work, sleepless nights and strategic planning.
Q.
HAVE YOU EVER FELT LIKE GIVING UP WHEN THINGS WEREN’T GOING ACCORDING TO PLAN?
RUPTION: I have a passion for what I do and can’t see myself doing anything else (maybe a professional Fifa player). I used my passion as motivation in the hard times and just endure.
Q. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY
TO THOSE WHO FACE A LOT OF DAILY DISAPPOINTMENTS AND LACK MOTIVATION TO KEEP GOING?
RUPTION: Motivation comes through values. Find what you value most and use that as your source of help. Everybody has different values so what motivates each person will be different. For some it might be family, close friends etc. Find your motivation and first use it as a distraction for the negative energy then as a means to keep pushing forward.

FRANCHESTER
CHRISTIE
H
is journey started at age 12 being inspired by Jamaican designers/ owners of Uzuri International who lived in his home town “Ocho Rios, St. Ann”. At age 17 he moved into the city of Kingston Jamaica where he studied Garment Construction in Fashion Design at Ka-Ju Fashion Institute. After his enrollment, he allowed himself to become involved in greater happenings within the fashion industry as much as he could. Then came Mission Catwalk, Jamaica’s first reality televised program supporting emerging designers to display their talents across local and international regions. He entered the competition on their first season in 2011

where he was the last male standing and made it to the top four out of 20 designers. Immediately after the competition, to move within the progress he joined up with Saint International where he debuted his fist collection within the same year of 2011 that was displayed at both Mecca of Style and Fashion Block. At the ending of 2011 within the month of December he opened his own clothing boutique known today as FRANZique ((a unisex boutique that caters to the style-conscious individual.). In 2012 he also displayed his “summer glow” spring collection with Saint International in which he has received great reviews..

BASICS OF MAN ITEMS EVERY YOUNG MAN SHOULD OWN Two Oxford Shirts (Blue & White)
Make sure they fit perfectly, the fit is KEY. These will always be your go to basics to build the foundation for most of your looks. You can add a simple blazer, a bow tie, a skinny tie, opened up with the sleeves rolled up, a cardigan. These are the most important staples in my closet, and because of the neutral colour it’s not memorable enough for people to know you’re repeating it.
Valon Thorpe
Neutral bottoms: Khaki, Black or Gray
Whenever the blue jean is too casual, a neutral bottom will easily dress you up. Right now khaki pants are in trend and are available at most clothing stores at affordable prices.
A Simple Reversible Belt (Black & Brown)
Reversible belts gives you more bank for your buck as you can invest some money in a good one, which technically works as two. All of my belts are reversible. image courtesy of: stayclassicblog.com
Fitted Blue Jeans
Spending the money on a good quality solid colored jean is worth the investment. Fit is of course personal preference but let’s try not to spend on jeans that add lbs to your body.

2 Pairs of Shoes (Black & Brown)
Two simple black and brown shoes are always good as they go with everything. Personally I only wear loafers but I’m also a ridiculous human being, as I have 4 of the same black loafers for different occasions, however one is enough. Lastly but not least, leave the sneakers for the gym.
A good slim tie is what you need; it can be as skinny as you desire. You can never go wrong with a solid black, dark gray or navy blue tie, but you can also choose more bold stripes, colours and textures to add some zest to your wardrobe. A Solid Blazer & Cardigan Having both of these will help you add some dimension to your look. Throwing a black cardigan over a t-shirt eliminates the extremely casual look they are known for. Likewise for the Blazer, it can work in being very formal (button up and a tie) and also dressed down (two buttons open/ t-shirt and rolled up sleeves).
-----PIECING IT ALL TOGETHER-----
A Leather Strapped Watch
A black or brown leather strapped watch in my opinion is the epitome of quiet style. Get a nice one at Kenneth Cole for quality at a good price.
A Good Slim Tie

Her name is Denyque.
Y
ou might know her as Jamaica’s ‘Supergirl’, but the singer Denyque is an interesting bundle of talent that grows more and more each day.
The singer got a foot in the music industry a few years ago in 2009 when she recorded her first single Can’t Breathe for Arrows Recording – the outfit that also managed her at the time. Since then, Denyque has grown tremendously and has firmly stepped into the entertainment stratosphere under the guidance and watchful eye of industry big-wig Jade Lee. Denyque was a consistent contestant in the JCDC festivals since she was only 11 years old. Now? She’s a singer and songwriter that totes around a level of maturity far beyond her years. It’s hard to put her in any one genre. “I’m not here to say that I’m the most versatile artiste in the world. But I don’t concentrate on labels. I don’t want anyone to label me as a ‘dancehall’ act or a ‘pop’ act. I’m an artiste and a creative one at that. I record fun, feel-good music. After we do that, we can worry about the genre,” she laughs. After releasing Can’t Breathe, she got a chance to work with renowned producer Don Corleone. That birthed the single Pieces, which lit airwaves ablaze with its catchy melody and lyrics. The combined efforts of Denyque and her new management led to the young songbird recording Summer Love, produced by Neil Mitchell from Cashflow Records. The song was a 2010 hit. Summer Love ballooned on local charts and began getting Denyque significant International airplay. Fans clamoured for a video, and the artiste responded with her first video. “Summer Love I think showed growth and that I’m serious about being a part of this industry and finding my place as a singer and artiste,” Denyque says.

Randy Rich, “Turn My Music Up” (Jam 2), “Casualty of Love” (Romeich Records) & her debut mixtape “I AM SUPERGIRL” (hosted by Razz & Biggy). The Supergirl continued to grow as an artiste, carefully gaining & building a solid fan base & foundation. She put together her first band & produced her first Live Show DENYQUE LIVE at Redbones which saw a Full House & got massive rave reviews. Dubbed as “Hard not to love” by Anthony Miller, she also gave us a brand new video, fittingly titled Supergirl, shot directed & edited by RD Studios, for the song of the same name. Kicking off 2013 with a hot new song produced by ‘Di Genius’ himself, a couple videos in the making, a nomination in the Youth View Awards & a highly anticipated EP produced by billboard producer “Ricky Blaze”, Denyque promises that this year will be nothing short of amazing. “Ultimately, I’m ready to show the entire world just what I mean when I say that I’m ‘your Supergirl’.”
H
er hard work continued to pay off. In 2011, Denyque copped her first award since starting her musical journey, and it was a big one. She took home the Excellence In Music (EME) award for Best New Artiste (2010). The award is highly respected and acclaimed throughout the music industry. But that’s not the only first Denyque accomplished in 2011. A few weeks later she made her debut on the African continent, performing for more than 4000 fans in Kenya. It’s an experience she won’t forget, and one which she describes as “amazing”. The summer of 2011 saw her gracing the Reggae Sumfest main stage on International Night 2 where she gave an astounding performance. 2012 saw hits like “I Miss You” produced by

Stay Healthy without Switching to an Extreme Diet? by: Micky Supreme
These days everyone goes ‘coco nuts’ when it comes to adjusting to a healthier lifestyle. Many of us tend to get dazed and confused not so much about opting to exercise, but about what to eat and the correct meal choices for a better diet without being labelled a health freak. For starters, here are some simple salubrious tips to guide our adjustment: 1. List all the foods you generally consume on a daily basis. 2. Break this list into two categories: ie: 1. Junk Food & 2. Good Food. If the ‘Junk Food’ list is longer than the ‘Good Food’, then this should serve as a real eyeopener as to whether we’ve been health conscious or just don’t care if we wind up as the next Fat Albert; “hey, hey, hey”: it’s time to switch! Now remember, because this is a switch, a switch to a healthier diet, doesn’t mean we should immediately STOP chowing down our drooling BURGERS or STOP slurping gallons of our favourite belly banging ICE CREAM, then wake up the next morning to eat Ital Food for the rest of our life. Instead, this switch must be gradual; we must gradually add more fruits, vegetables, whole grains & natural juices at our next meal sitting.
JUNK FOOD Pizza Ice Cream Cheese Trix Red Meat Bubble Gums Sodas Doughnut
GOOD FOOD Grapefruits Peanuts Steam Vegetables Add More: + Fish + Salads + Yogurts + Natural Juices
PRACTICAL SWITCH TIPS • Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. • More meals but in smaller portions, usually (6-8) small portions. • Fruits for breakfast (apple, oranges, coconuts, pineapples, etc) • Sip more Green Tea (great for cutting that stubborn belly fat). • Try a Grill Chicken Salad for lunch. • Snack on seeds & nuts (Chia seeds, peanuts, almonds, etc). • Chicken breast & baked potatoes for dinner. • Then an innocent glass of red wine just before bed.
