Meaningful
Resolutions By Renee Johnson
W
e are blessed for seeing 2014 as many persons did not get the opportunity. At the staring of the new year we make resolutions as to how we can make our lives better, the problem seems to be sticking to the list of things. The most common resolutions seem to be: no new friends, make more money, visit church more often and lose weight, just to name a few. New Year Resolutions are usually created in the spirit of “New Year, New Me”, and are impulsive, short lived, vague and there is no proper planning behind them. The key in creating meaningful goals is to sit and assess all the aspect of your life, what you want to change (weakness) and what you want to remain the same (strengths), and even your strengths can be improved. Ask yourself “What do I want to achieve in the next ten years?” You have to consciously make a decision of change, and create that mindset needed to achieve these goals. You have to create a framework in which you wish to attain these goals.
Goal Creating Tips 1. Focus on what you want to achieve.
2. Make a list of 50 things you want to achieve in 2014.
3. Set your own goals and standards by which you want to achieve them. 4. Challenge yourself to complete these goals.
5. Goals should be SMART! They should Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound; this is the “How? What? Where? Who? Why?” 6. There should be a time limit to achieve your goals, give yourself a deadline. 7. Focus on what you want to achieve.
8. Understand that there will be a dry spell when nothing happens.
9. As you achieve one goal another will appear. There is ALWAYS something to achieve.
10. Always remember the “bigger picture”, this is essentially what you want to achieve in life. The secret to successful change and goal setting is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old but building the new. The key to making a more meaningful resolution is to create new positive habits and while moving away from the old. Instead of wasting precious resources, resenting the bad habits and negative experience, focus on creating positive and better experiences. JAE Magazine | FEB/MAR 2014

50. The way you see the world is all that matters. But understand that you may be delusional.
If I was to write list of my perfect guy he would be tall and handsome, ambitious, a little ruff around the edges, a MAN MAN, rugged, tough but a prince, a sweetheart, he would think I am the most beautiful woman to grace this earth and he would have no qualms about telling me this, on a very regular basis. He would randomly surprise me, especially on the days where I want to kill everybody I come in contact with, he will send me the lyrics to John Legend songs, he would see my body as a Wonderland and call me his Vixen and tell me that ill be the cash, he would be rubber band, me the match and he’ll be my fuse, because this love - SURE TING! Yea thats my nigga. MINE.
So tell me why is that when we find THIS guy, this guy we been dreaming bout, wishing and hoping for, we second guess him and question whether this is really what we want or not? I read somewhere that we all want the “nice” guy, but we’ve probably imprisoned him in the “Friendzone”. ”Oh he’s like a brother to me. He is JUST a friend” *hums Mario’s Just a Friend (which is a BIG tune btw)?* According to the infallible dictionary that is urbandictionary. com, the FRIENDZONE is defined as the worst position someone can be in, if they have feelings for someone.

When a person develops romantic feelings for someone, but the other person only sees the relationship as just being friends. Because the two are around each other a lot, the one in love will harbor his/her feelings for the others, only to become completely consumed by this person and ultimately left disappointed at never being able to realize their dreams of moving from“best friend” to “boyfriend”.
As women have this thing were we sabotage ourselves. We are so used to dumb dipstick sh*ts, who treat us like crap, that when a good guy comes along, a legit good man, we turn idiots and search for reasons as to why this won’t work out. I am guilty of this, I am very guilty of this. I am so used to the struggle that when a good guy comes along I find myself wondering if I deserve this good treatment, and I literally search for reasons - very stupid reasons - as to why we won’t work.
Why do I do this?
We have all seen the “This Could Be Us…. But You …..” posts, and most of them are funny but think about it, we all are so caught up in getting the asshole’s attention that we are blind to what’s right in front of us. That sweetheart who is always there for you - mention to him that you are moody and annoyed with the world and see if he doesn’t offer you his time and effort? But we nuh want that, we want the idiot who never has time for us, whose attention you have to fight for and NEVER makes the effort to make you feel appreciated, and don’t get me started on his hot and cold behaviour.

Have I been conditioned in such a way that if I don’t have to work for a man’s attention, then it nor I am good enough? Over the years, the struggle is so engrained in my brain that when a man just tells me “I want to see you, I am coming by in an hour” I am so dumbfounded that I am like wait? huh? You’re comin when???? Let me pause for a moment - no I have not been under a rock, and no this is not the first time that a man has told me that he wants to see me so he is coming over shortly - but this is the first time in a very long time that a man is 1) so intent on seeing me 2) did not come with an excuse as to why he was late or not be coming again which leads to 3) actually shows up at the time he stated. I have such bad habit of thinking that I don’t deserve goodness in my life - I ask for it, I dream about it - but when something very close to it
comes along, I’m not sure what to do with it or myself. The dominant part of my personality takes over because I see his genuine like for me as a weakness, and I just have to take control of the situation. Somebody can’t like me this and be so open about it and there not be any hangups. There has to be catch and if he doesn’t reveal it to me then it becomes my duty to uncover it. I need to start a fight or nitpick at some dumb sh*t to try and draw him out and have him show his “real” colours. I wish it was different. I wish I wasn’t like this. I wish I could bask in the goodness that this man is offering me. I am working on it though, and I will continue to work on it, coz this is what I deserve. I deserve a man who thinks I am absolutely beautiful and who thinks my smile can light up the darkest room; I deserve a man who surprises me just because, not because he wants sex or because he wants something, JUST BECAUSE.
So instead of nit picking and looking for a flaw(s), I am going to sing, dance laugh, enjoy this goodness, because this princess has been looking for a prince, well not so much a prince coz princes can be boring, I want a knight in shining armour to save me from the distress of the world. I am going to stop sabotaging myself and the potential of a really good relationship. Can’t say it will be easy but I am going to try to make it work, and I am going to push through my self sabotage.
Who is with me? Find more of Clumsylucy rants at shethinks-shewrites.tumblr.com
The guy who is probably the most perfect for you, the one who would value you the most and make you feel like a princess every damn day of your life, is probably, very likely the guy you have put in the friend zone, maybe he isn’t as attractive as the assholes you tend to be drawn to like moths to a light, but he is a sweetheart and the truth is that those “hot boys” that you and every other girl is ogling isn’t going to do you any good. Those BOYS bathe, skinny dip, and run up and down in attention like a drunk soca junkie in paint at Jouvert. Look into yourself and the friendship you have with that ONE guy, who you may have thought about once but said “nah he’s like a brother to me” think about it, is he really? Or did YOU put him in that zone because he isn’t an asshole who ignores you and gives you mixed signals? JAE Magazine | FEB/MAR 2014

halia Marie has had a passion for Q: Why did you start white fur? fashion from a very young age. More and more designers, celebrities She explains that she is from a and serious fashion fanatics are Believe in family of fashionable women looking to vintage clothing for and whenever they go out your flyness, inspiration and it has become all they dress to the “T”. “Fashion conquer your the rave around the world. Q: White fur offers vintage-inspired pieces, why the love of vintage? If you are familiar with vintage clothes you would know that they are usually one of a kind pieces hence there is hardly a chance of seeing someone else in you exact look, this in itself eliminates you from the “bitch stole my look category”. Also, in these days of mass produced clothing it feels exceptionally good to know that you are wearing a unique piece made of a certain standard, quality, design and craftsmanship and that is the thing I love the most about vintage clothing.
Q: What do you hope to get out of it? Only success. Q: What’s your favourite trend/style? I’m not sure if it is trendy right now but I am really into shiny, sequin dresses and blazers . Q: What /who inspires you? As it regards the world of fashion; I’m inspired by designers and fashion shows, street style, bloggers and sometimes just my environment. In general I’m drawn to and inspired by people

who take pride in their work and have the desire to innovate, create and grow. Q: What’s your favourite colour to wear? I like black a lot ; its sleek, versatile, elegant and mysterious. Q: How important do you think fashion is? This is a tricky question, I think fashion adds colour, excitement and energy to people’s lives. It allows people to be unique, expressive and creative without saying a word, just like a painting on a wall. However, in the grand scheme of things keeping “fashion” in perspective is what is really important. Modesty, pride and confidence is better “fashion” than any other fashion. Q: Do you think more and more persons are valuing fashion (especially in Jamaica)? Yes they are! For a long time people wore the same generic looks but now I see people stepping out of their comfort zone, experimenting and dabbling with different types of looks such as vintage. I can tell vintage clothing from a mile away and when I see people in Jamaica in it for some strange reason I get super turnt up! Q: Fashion often ostracizes curvy girls; what’s your philosophy on style and size? Know your body type and wear what compliments it.
“Dedicated to all the ladies in the place with style and grace.”

LIPS! to kill for by Robynn Lee robsiethemua.blogspot.com
W
ith each changing season, fashion trend and fashion icon, there lives a new makeup trend bursting from the seams. As a makeup artist, my most popular questions vary from foundations to blushes, but more recently with the birth of bold lips, lip colours and the right colours for you and the season has got to be my most frequently asked question ! Personally, I am a dark lip fan, venturing to my bright neon pinks and nudes every now and again. But lets talk about lips for seasons. We are just about to jump into spring, but lets rewind back to the autumn/winter months- those months being October to January. During these months, fashion trends suggests layers for those in the colder regions, but as Jamaicans, as with every other month or season of the year, anything goes. However, one of my favorite things about the Autumn/Winter trend is the abundance of the dark lip trend. Whether cranberry reds, burgundies, deep purples, red wine colours, they all go during these months. Colours of daring, mystery and sultry passion, ironic during what should
26
FEB/MAR 2014 | JAE Magazine
be the most festive all months, but it works. Some colours I suggest are: Rebel by MAC, Cyber by MAC, Dark Side by MAC, Wine Not by Revlon, Berry Haute by Revlon, Monte Carlo by NYX and Cherry Bomb by Wet and Wild. Now, lets skip along to the Spring coloursFebruary to May. Spring and Summer colours are some what similar as they range from pastel shades to neons. Spring months are months of blooms. In a sense, rebirth, a way to get past those dark mysterious colours to more pastel like shades with a hint of neon. Pastel pinks, corals, oranges, and pink based purples are most popular during these months. These colours represent a kind of youth and frivolity. Some colours I suggest are: Brazen Berry by Maybelline, Flat Out Fabulous by MAC, Cosmo Pop by Limecrime, Electric Orange by Revlon, Girl About Town by MAC and Dollhouse Pink by Wet and Wild.
With summer colours we think of bright fun colours, willing to take risks, because after all, we only live once. We still have our muted pastels during these summery months with a lot more of our neons. Pinks, purples and oranges always go during these warmer months of June to September as we lay out and tan as the neons often pop against tanned skin. Often times more blue based pinks, purples and oranges are chosen as the work for every skin tone and not to mention gives the illusion of whiter teeth. Who doesn’t love whiter teeth ? Some colours I suggest are: Candy Yum Yum by Mac, Up the Amp by Mac, Fuschia Fever by Maybelline, Think Pink by Wet and Wild, Brazen Berry by Maybelline, Electric Orange by Maybelline, Lady Danger by Mac, M’orange by MAC, Viva Glam Nicki I & II by MAC Now I’ve opted to not include these two categories of lip colours by season as there is never just one season to wear true reds or nudes. These are staple colours in every lipstick collection as a classic red or clean neutral can complete any outfit and compliment every smile. Often times the only heartache is choosing the perfect
colours for your skin tone. For nudes, its often best to go with a nude a shade or two darker than your natural lip tone. Anything less or exact may leave you looking washed out and pale. As for reds, a blue based true red works for everyone. Some REDS I suggest are : Ruby Woo by MAC, Riri Woo by MAC, Red by MAC, Really Red by Revlon. Some NUDES I suggest are: Cherish by MAC, Babette by Limecrime, Angel by MAC, Mauve it Over by Revlon, Smoked Peach by Revlon. Overall, it’s not necessary to follow trends of seasons, find your colour niche and rock it, then step out of that comfort zone and reach for that almost black looking purple or that Neon pink you’ve been hiding from, and rock the heck out of that too honey! The best accessory to pull off any lip colour isn’t a statement necklace or leather pants, its a gorgeous smile and a girl who oozes self confidence, so rock those lips, the lips anyone would kill for.

Tiffany’s Style Essentials
1
The Basic Black Blazer – There are very few things that a more versatile in any woman’s closet than a well tailored black blazer. It can take you from day to night. It’s a great way to cover up at the office and can be spiced up with a sexy dress and heels for night or even make a casual look more polished when thrown on with a pair of jeans. The featured blazer is from Missguided UK.
2
The Romper – Easy and effortlessly stylish, the romper is a great way to look well put together without trying too hard. This is another piece that is extremely versatile, depending on how you accessorize it. I chose this one from Missguided UK because the lace and floral patterns add interest. When accessorizing something patterned, I love to match my jewelry to the least used colors in the pattern. It’s a subtle and unexpected choice that has a big impact on the overall look.

Style Essentials
The Lace Up Heel – As classy as they are sexy, I couldn’t help but include this season’s trendiest statement heel. They are universally flattering and worn as easily with jeans as they are with a cocktail dress. I think this trend has staying power for seasons to come and should become a classic in its own right. I’m wearing lace up heels from Zara.

The Classic Wristwatch – You’ve got places to go and things to do, and your style is a reflection of that. Nothing is quite as stylishly sleek as the classic wristwatch. I wear mine with everything! It adds polish and sleekness to any business or casual look. I chose this two tone watch from Michael Kors so that I can wear it with either gold or silver jewelry. I’m also all about the oversized faces right now, they’re so sexy on a slender, feminine wrist.
5
The Statement Necklace/Ring – A standout ring or necklace is a classy attention grabber. The way that ring grabs the light as you’re taking a sip of your latte or cocktail says glamour and the key to pulling these pieces off is not overdoing it. Think quality not quantity. Fabulous statement necklace? Pair it with understated earrings. Definitely a must have for a well-rounded wardrobe. My necklace and ring are by BaubleBar.

1
The White Button Down – There’s not much to say here. The white button down has been an iconic symbol of style since before the advent of dungarees (AKA the old school name for jeans). No true fashionista can be without one, it says effortless polish and can be worn with virtually anything from a business look to a stylish bikini cover up. I chose to feature this one from H&M because of its flattering, blouse cut and it’s unique V neck. Basics can still be interesting!
2
The Little Black Dress (LBD) – I know, how very Audrey of me. But is there anything sexier than that little black dress that fits just right? Flattering enough to be a stand-alone piece, its versatility is what makes it an essential. Throw it on some with some boots and a denim button down and you’ve got instant casual chic or pair it with some bright colored heels for a hot night out. Mine is from Nasty Gal. The T-Strap Heel – The ankle strap heel is an ‘IT’ shoe this season and I love the pair I’m wearing from Sole Society. They are very flattering on the feet and the gold heel and small studs add a touch of glam to this must have basic. You can wear them with jeans for a more casual look or a bustier and bodycon skirt for night!

Delicate Gold Jewelry – Gold jewelry is a must have because it’s flattering on every complexion! It adds elegance to any look. I’m wearing a diamond and 24KT Gold necklace from Zales, Rings from ASOS, and bangles from an Indian Jeweller I found in Atlanta. Metallic Accessories – This vintage gold purse has great details! The chain strap and the gold quilted leather make it as pretty as a piece of jewelry. Mine is from vintage retailer Posh Finds Vintage in LA. Wear it as shown here or with some cutoffs and a cute crop top!

WHITE BUTTON-DOWN COLLAR SHIRT A staple in every wardrobe, the white button-down is probably the most versatile piece of clothing in existence. It can be paired with virtually any other piece of clothing; though, the trick to the perfect white shirt is the fit of the shirt. Regardless of how expensive your shirt might claim to be, a $10 fitted shirt will always outshine it, so do yourself a favour and get yourself a proper fitting shirt.

BROWN DRESS SHOES There comes a point in every man’s life when he might be forced to “dress up”. The brown dress shoe is a classic and elegant solution. Black dress shoes are a viable option also; but, black dress shoes suggest a certain level at formality depending on the shoe’s silhouette. Brown dress shoes can easily be dressed up or dressed down and they can be worn with practically any other colour.
LEATHER BAND WATCH Unlike the fairer sex, we men have a lot less accessories to play around with; therefore, every man should have at least one watch. No number of digital devices, unless it’s a digital watch can beat the convenience of a simple glance at your wrist to tell the time.
KHAKI PANTS Whether you’re going to a business meeting, a stroll through the park or a wild night out partying, nothing beats the flexibility of a good fitting pair of khaki pants. Up the ante with a modern slim fitting pair to avoid appearing as someone’s old whiskey drinking grandfather.
SOLID COLOURED JEANS Less is more as the saying goes, and it applies to your jeans as well. Less baggage and unnecessary details will ensure the longevity of your jeans. Avoid the rips, the studs, the extra tags and you’ll have a pair of jeans that you will serve for practically any event.
SIMPLE GROOMING TIPS TO REMEMBER • Trim the nose hairs. • Trim the eyebrows. • Clean the hair off your ears and neck. • Keep your nails short and clean. • Brush and floss daily.
• Have your clothes tailored to fit your body. • Cleanse your face on a regular basis with a facial soap. • Remember, less is more when it comes to fragrance.

Health Tips Your food and physical activity choices each day affect your health — how you feel today, tomorrow, and in the future. Start eating well with these five tips for healthy eating, which cover the basics of a healthy diet and good nutrition.
Enjoy Ginger The volatile oils in ginger have long made it a useful herbal remedy for nasal and chest congestion. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a 1-inch piece of peeled, grated ginger; steep for 10 minutes; and strain. Add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the water and drink as needed.

Eat Bananas People whose diets are rich in potassium may be less prone to high blood pressure. Besides reducing sodium and taking other hearthealthy steps, eat potassium-packed picks such as bananas, cantaloupe, and oranges.
Eat Avocados For dry skin, incorporate more avocados into your diet. They're rich in monounsaturated fat and Vitamin E, both of which promote healthy skin. Try them on salads and sandwiches, and even in smoothies.
Hydrate
To treat an acute migraine, drink a full glass of water -- dehydration can trigger headaches. Even if you need to take a medication for the pain, try wrapping your head with an Ace bandage so that it covers your eyes, then lie down and breathe deeply. This often helps the pain pass more quickly.
Watch Your Carbs Trying to reduce belly fat? Pay attention to your carbohydrate intake and avoid artificial sweeteners. Sugary snacks and other refined carbs spike blood sugar and cause pounds to settle in your midsection. Choose whole grains, beans, and vegetables instead.

esse Royal was only a cub when the Lord revealed to his mother that she would have to release one of her sons to the world, proclaiming “he will be a psalmist, declaring righteousness and justice throughout creation.” As Jesse matured into a young lion, his mother observed in him a strong sense of integrity and a natural ability to positively affect those around him. But it was his deep spirituality, passion for life and unique connection to music that would convince her that he was being molded to be used by the Creator. Jesse David Leroi Grey, born April 29, 1989, enjoyed his early years in the hills of Maroon Town and the District of Orange in St. James before moving to Kingston in the late 90’s with his Mother and brother to join his Father. As fate would have it, Royal developed a special relationship with Daniel ‘Bambaata’ Marley (son of Ziggy Marley) at school. This friendship with Daniel proved to be fuel to the fire as they both shared a deep passion for music and football; they naturally became brothers with different mothers, spending most of their childhoods together. became lions so grew the friendship and devotion to music. They began composing and creating their own music with the help of longtime friend Curt White and thus their musical journey began. After Jesse returned home from schooling abroad, a relationship with high school friend and young producer Kareem ‘Remus’ Burrell (son of Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell) reignited. They began creating and composing music together, this developed into a Movement as they shared similar views on the social and spiritual state of Jamaica. Blessed with a voice that captures the pain and hunger of a ‘downtrodden’ people; Royal’s militant character and profound lyricism caught the heart of heralded reggae

producer, Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell. Fatis Burrell, affectionately called ‘Father’ had a great and pure impact on the ‘old soul’ of Jesse; as he credits him as an invaluable inspiration and one of the most influential individuals that he has ever encountered. Jesse Royal’s sophomore mixtape, ‘In comes the Small Axe’ is available and he is currently putting the final touches on his debut album with Kareem Burrell of the XTM.Nation. The official video for ‘Hotter The Battle will be premiering soon. It is a follow up from ‘Modern Day Judas’. Also Jesse’s debut EP, ‘Royally Speaking’ is set for release shortly and will feature production from Xtm.Nation, Overstand Entertainment, Crash Dummy Productions and Notice Productions.

amaican singer-songwriter, Kat C.H.R has come of age with her latest project – GOLD -written by Kat and co-produced with Andrew ‘Preggs’ Thompson.
“It’s like a coming of age project for me. My music has always been true to my life. These songs represent me to the fullest. I keep my thoughts golden, I keep my heart golden and inevitably, my art is golden. People used to see me at shows and say oh I had no idea you were going to sound like that but they are always intrigued by my contradiction. There is a light inside me that wants to shine, GOLD is that light. It’s my labour of love,” says Kat.
I called Ride or Die a Statement because I know Jamaican people at large wouldn’t take it on because its so different from what we do. So I did this to open the ears of our people (radio stations, etc) to let them know that we are versatile and should not be limited to anything. If I want to do this this way, I will. If I want to change and do something else, I will. It’s my story & I’ll tell it how I want to. So thats why this song is so short. A Statement. Ride for This Music: Die for This Music - Machu Ezra
The EP features four tracks - GOLD, MANGO, OVER MY HEAD and TURN AROUND - each delivering her paradoxical yet authentic musical style that has gained her fans all around the world. These songs showcase not only her versatility as an artist but also why she’s known as a lyrical heavyweight. According to Kat, “this project represents growth for me as an artist, with each song I’m evoking that distinct connection between my hardcore, tomboy image, and my sensitive lyrics and smooth melodies… It all finally makes sense.” Now armed with a wealth of experience, new management and an arsenal of new music she has signed a distribution deal for GOLD with international recording artist, Diana King’s US based record label ThinkLikeAgirL Music Inc.

#PAYATTENTION breaks new ground in Jamaican music
A
n event in Jamaica playing strictly Hip Hop music and featuring local performers of the genre is unheard of to the average person. It is likely that they have never even thought about such a thing existing. In reality, Hip Hop events have been taking place on-and-off in Kingston for over a decade and have been supported by a growing underground community of local rappers and fans of the music. Most recently, one event has emerged that has transformed the local Hip Hop scene and raised its profile

significantly – Pay Attention. Pay Attention was created by a group of local Hip Hop practitioners who saw the need for a space and platform for a community that lacked the adequate and appropriate opportunities and avenues. First held in April 2012, unlike previous events which focused on Hip Hop or featured local rappers, it is run completely by members of the community. Nearing its second anniversary in 2014, its consistency and impact is a testament not just to the determination and vision of its organisers, but the potential
of a highly talented generation of artistes with independent music business acumen. “Many thought it would never reach this far,” says Pay Attention host and local rapper, The Sickest Drama (TSD). “We still have a very far way to go, but the media exposure we’ve received is unprecedented, and that says a lot about how the reality is changing for the community.” Resident DJ, Inztinkz, who has been around the scene since 1995, says, “Back then, we never imagined what we have now. At most, we had
Alric & Boyd’s Phat Block on Fame FM in the late 1990s going into the 2000s. We were going to the gatekeepers of the industry at the time and were being rejected. Now, we’ve become gatekeepers ourselves, for our own community.” Since its start, Pay Attention has provided opportunities for performing and media exposure for dozens of local Hip Hop artistes. “I remember when I started performing in 2007, me and my friends were looking for promoters in the live scene that were willing to give us a run,” says independent Hip Hop artiste, Five Steez. “They saw the potential in it but none of them managed the opportunity well or committed to it in the long term. Today, we have a platform bigger than any before, and we control it, so we can ensure it truly represents the community and the essence of our art.” Nomad Carlos, currently residing in New York, says the scene is more excited about moving forward. “I expect to see a lot of local Hip Hop releases in 2014 and more people logging onto the movement, both locally and worldwide. Some of us are between ‘yard’ and abroad, so we are all doing our part to progress our careers, which will reflect the Hip Hop surge that's going on in Jamaica.” Pay Attention Public Relations Manager, Raquel Allen, says the demand for the music and the shows is growing, and so is the supply. Allen added, “We are also on the path of creating our own association to unite and represent for local Hip Hop practitioners. The world is looking at Jamaica more now than ever, and believe it or not, they are open to the embracing and accepting the fruit of her womb – Hip Hop, a genre birthed from our sound system culture.” JAE Magazine | FEB/MAR 2014

Leaving his mark Ranford Anderson
When JAE contacted Randford and told him we wanted to feature him and his work he was appreciative. We requested he provide us with some information about his work and journey, Instead of providing a biography he wrote the following in an email to JAE, here are his words: “To be honest just a few months ago my whole perspective on life was chasing skirts and making money. I knew I was turning 25 this year, I entered 2013 seeking to cleanse my heart and ways which lead me to art. Through art and my quest for righteousness I also found Rastafari. This is the start of a whole new journey for me. I don’t know much right now, I’m learning as I grow but what I do know is that I’m an artist, a Rasta youth with nothing but love for all. Reality is that there’s going to be a few artists that will let ego get the better of them and try to dispute this but I nuh business ‘bout them. Fact is that I’ve been able to figure out a technique in drawing, achieving more detail than any other artist in Jamaica’s history and in just a few months. It was in June 2013 that I first saw this type of art (photo-realism) and for that i’m really passionate about sharing with as much youths as possible, pretty much to raise awareness. I’m not into the showoff thing, or going around talking about being better than any other artist. I don’t want this to be about me but instead a Jamaican art movement hence the name “1 pencil Jamaica. Soon I will have my little army of artists some all tougher than myself. Mek di whole world know Jamaicans can dweeet to”. Ranford is a talented, young, inspirational artist leaving his mark, one piece of work at a time. Apple’s latest high end smartphone should always better than the last one and the iPhone 5s proves that with a better processor, improved camera, useful fingerprint scanner, and more. Of course the new iPhone 5s is the best iPhone Apple ever made, just like every new high end iPhone Apple releases each year. Unquestionably, the standout features of the iPhone 5s are its newest hardware inclusions and upgrades, namely Touch ID, the M7 motion coprocessor, 64-bit architecture and the all-new iSight camera. These are not only what differentiate it from the previous iPhone 5, but justify its place as the flagship iPhone when compared to the iPhone 5c. Full Details: apple.com
The iPhone 5C marks a new era in Apple’s mobile onslaught, as they finally breaks rank from premium design and price by offering up a device which is slightly more affordable. At 124.4 x 59.2 x 8.97mm the iPhone 5C is slightly chunkier than the handset it’s replacing, but considering the iPhone 5 was wafer thin the 5C certainly isn’t overbearing in the hand and the added weight from a slightly larger battery means that it actually feels more substantial compared to the iPhone 5S. Apple’s new approach to tablets is to make everything easier to carry - and with a 43% thinner bezel and a 28% lighter device, the iPad Air is championing that drive. Despite its petite size and lightweight build, it doesn’t feel at all flimsy. The unibody aluminum chassis is just as solid as on older iPads. The sides have a blunter edge this time around, so you get more of a grip than the gradually sloping edges on previous models; and Apple has added chamfered, diamond-cut edges that form a boundary between the bezel and the rest of the tablet’s body, which gives it a premium look. Specs-wise, it has a 64-bit 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 9.7-inch 2048 x 1536 pixel screen, 16 – 128GB of built-in storage (depending on what you want to pay), a 5-megapixel rear camera with an F2.4 aperture, and a 1.2-megapixel front camera. The addition of the A7 chip and M7 coprocessor makes the iPad Air the most powerful iPad ever. Full Details: apple.com
The PlayStation 4 is the most powerful games console on the planet. With more graphical power than the Xbox One, 32 times more system memory than the PS3 and a firm focus on pure gaming experiences. The PS4 is Sony’s most attractively designed piece of hardware. It’s a beautiful system, with a sharp, slightly angled profile accented by a light bar that acts as a console status indicator. Inside, the PS4 is all business. It has a custom singlechip processor that combines an eight core x86-64 AMD “Jaguar” CPU with a 1.84 teraflop GPU based on AMD’s Radeon tech. That’s backed by 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, and a 500GB mechanical hard drive. Full Details: us.playstation.com
The Xbox One is more than a game console. Microsoft is certain the Xbox One is their key to taking over living room entertainment in its entirety. The Xbox One is a big black box with a single Xbox circle logo on it that lights up when you tap it to turn it on. Where competing systems work with industrial design that’s made for potential shine, the Xbox One is Microsoft’s return to utter simplicity. Under the Xbox One’s hood is an eight-core AMD CPU, 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a GPU clocked at 853 MHz. The Xbox One’s specs trail the PS4’s only slightly, but it’s important to keep in mind this was the case last generation as well. Full Details: xbox.com

helly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Chris Gayle, the Kool Runnings bobsled team, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, Shaggy, jerked chicken/pork, ackee and saltfish, dreadlocks, beautiful white sand beaches, a distinct, memorable dialect …. all instantly recognisable symbols of the beloved Jamaica. They represent the care-free, uber-talented, culturally rich, people of the island Jamaica. The epic brand. This little island in the Caribbean named among the happiest countries in the world, ‘no problem mon’, right? Wrong.
Nation Brand, focuses on image and reputation, is formed from multiple source and influences: mass media, visitors, political climate, national achievement, word of mouth, history, heritage, etc. Well acclaimed marketing thought leaders say a nation’s image is defined by people, their perceptions of place which is not only shaped by its products, but also through associations influenced by a country’s political, socio-economic, environmental, technological conditions, its culture, heritage, and traditions. In 2011, the United Nations released an extensive report detailing each country’s homicide rate. Jamaica placed fourth with a homicide rate of 52.1 (murders per 100,000 people). According to Business Insider many of the countries with the highest homicide rates are low on human development, high on income inequality and corruption, and are fairly unstable. Hmmm….. How’s the brand looking now? But this is just a part of the story. How do we rate deterioration in values and attitudes, the disregard for the elderly, women, children and the environment? How do we rate the pervasive disrespect for self and others; the developing culture of music that lauds and encourages criminal activity?
56
FEB/MAR 2014 | JAE Magazine
Despite the negative image of the brand, Jamaica continues to receive some good coverage internationally, which many shout proudly from rooftops (… and lecterns) as being excellent for brand Jamaica. Still fresh in our minds is Tessanne Chin’s performance on The Voice which propelled Jamaica, (bread and butter) to the top of trending lists last week. Who can forget our athletes’ performance in the 2012 Olympics and 2013 IAAF World Championships; our entertainers at BET Awards; the infamous XLVII SuperBowl commercials, and even the massive 2013 Jamaica Diaspora Conference which were extraordinary free promotions for brand Jamaica. Which organization/nation wouldn’t be proud? But how much was converted into dollars, jobs? While brand popularity and recognition are good it is not the symbols which make a brand great but the quality, reliability, promise and goodwill it represents. And right now, brand Jamaica needs backitive. Like the person with the big mouth but no substance or strength for the battle; our cool brand image belies a nation in need substantive change if we are to convert the brand’s goodwill into cash. To be successful, this will require an all-emcompassing, integrative national identity strategy that will involve: 1. Government Support: We will need national government policy-makers to grasp the importance of having a national identity framework, which places the emphasis on ‘competitive identity’ and a positive nation brand image. Countries like New Zealand, Australia, Spain and Ireland all present as excellent models of countries whose nation branding process resulted in radical change of the perception and awareness of their nation identities abroad. This means therefore that the Jamaican government must take a proactive approach to nation branding, recognizing the relational
linkages to economic growth, such as: an increase inward investment and exports, improved figures in visitor arrivals, confidence boast in the products the nation produces. 2. Public-Private Partnerships: Firms in their own best interest and in furthering national interests may need to help the government drive ‘Jamaica’s Vision 2030 Jamaica – National Development Plan’, specifically funding and ensuring the implementation of public education campaigns whose objective are to promote a sense of national and individual identity, raise the level of understanding about the linkages and connections between nationalism, individual growth and the nation’s economic development. It is important for all stakeholders in nation-building to become involved with re-socializing how people relate to each other and to eliminate disrespectful behaviours that reflect poorly on the country’s image. The public education campaign’s primary objective is therefore to highlight positive core values that build social and cultural capital and for nationals to understand his/her role in protecting the brand Jamaica image. As Jamaica develops, so will the private sector which therefore has a stake in ensuring that the brand on the whole is lucrative.
good citizens, contributing positively to their country. With the family at the foundation of every society, improving parenting can go a long way in re-building Jamaica, providing a quality brand. More organisations – church, civic groups, school - are therefore needed to support parenting and the preservation of right values and attitudes. In Japan, school curriculum at the Elementary, Junior High and High School levels includes Moral Education and Civics. As early as preschool, students are taught to maintain cooperative relationships with their peers, proper manners, how to speak politely and how to address adults as well as how to relate to their peers in the appropriate manner. This serves mainly to preserve social values and transmit them to the next generation. Companies invest millions in building and maintaining their brand’s reputation. Because the truth is, it all boils down to, reputation. People buy into the reputation of your product. Pun intended. So, what are we doing about brand Jamaica? by Melody Cammock-Gayle Director, Business Development & Marketing Communications & Business Solutions (CBS) Ltd
3. Political Integrity: A nation is judged domestically and internationally by its leaders’ performance and reputation. Leaders’ reputation is a critical aspect, which permeates and impacts other channels of economic and social development. The nation’s leaders must exemplify and communicate good governance consistently. Therefore Jamaica needs to establish a political policy that distinguishes itself as a country that places emphasis on political integrity, accountability, responsible and ethical governance. All of which can strengthen its relations in international markets as ‘outsiders’ recognize that its people demands accountability and ethical governance from its leaders. Ministers of government daggering at party meetings or flouting known procedures somehow doesn’t paint a picture of responsible governance. 4. Parenting: If as a country we are to be successful in re-socializing citizens then it must start at the first teaching point, the home. Parents should bear the brunt of the responsibility to train their children to be JAE Magazine | FEB/MAR 2014
