The Hague, city by the sea
High-quality cultural offer
Some places always remain dear to one’s heart. The Hague can be said to be one such place. The city of peace and justice. The city of the cosmopolitan and the beach. From shops to palaces. From exotic cuisines to Dutch fishing harbours. From international jurisdiction to street savvy. The Hague will captivate you with its modern skyline combined with beautiful historical and royal buildings in the city centre. The Hague is the residence of King WillemAlexander and Queen Máxima.
The Hague is home to a wealth of museums. Boasting some modern art, intimate theatre plays, world-famous museums (e.g. ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ from Vermeer at the Mauritshuis and the ‘Victory Boogy Woogy’ from Mondrian at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag) and bustling festivals all contribute to the city’s reputation for being a magnificent cultural potpourri all year round.
The Hague offers you no less than two destinations in one: city and beach. The Hague is the only coastal city in the Netherlands. Soak up culture in the historical city centre followed by a walk across the beach of Scheveningen, which is less than 15 minutes away by bike or by tram. With attractions and museums, two theatres and numerous restaurants and hotels, Scheveningen offers visitors all the ingredients for a city trip.
Home to the royal family The Hague has been home to the royal family for centuries. With its historical monuments, working and residential palaces and favourite addresses of the king and queen, there is no denying that The Hague is home to the royal family.
City of peace and justice The Hague is synonymous with international law, peace and diplomacy. It is the United Nations’ second city, after New York. There are more than 160 international organisations based in The Hague, among them the renowned Peace Palace, ICC and the OPCW, dedicated to the cause of world peace.
Political heart of the Netherlands
Shopping 7 days a week The Hague has a charming and historical city centre where shops are open seven days a week. It’s a compact area where you’ll find vintage, fashion and department stores and art galleries within walking distance.
From fresh fish to exotic cuisine A visit to The Hague offers a wealth of choice that will appeal to all tastes. For hip restaurants, wander down to Prinsestraat and sit down along one of the canals in the city. The harbour is a great choice for having a sunset dinner with fresh fish on your plate. As ‘widow of the Dutch East Indies’, the city boasts a wide range of restaurants serving elaborate ‘rice tables’ in typical colonial atmosphere.
Green city The greenest city in Europe? That must be The Hague! Considering the population density of the Netherlands, visitors to The Hague are always amazed to find such an abundance of lush greenery throughout the city. Parks, forests, dunes and numerous green open spaces occupy over 400 hectares, which means that no less than a third of the city is green.
The Hague is the political capital of the Netherlands. The centre of the political heart can be found at Binnenhof, where the future of the Netherlands is decided. Other well-known sites are the Knights’ Hall and the Court Pond. 11

Absolute must see and do Peace Palace Feel the warmth of the peace flame on your back as you admire the most photographed building in The Hague: the Peace Palace. This Neo-Renaissance style building and the organisations it houses have given The Hague worldwide recognition as the international city of Peace and Justice. The Peace Palace can be viewed under the supervision of a guide. 12
Mauritshuis The Mauritshuis is home to the best Dutch paintings from the Golden Age, such as Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, ‘The Goldfinch’ by Fabritius and ‘The Anatomy Lesson’ by Rembrandt. The Mauritshuis is situated in the heart of The Hague.
Panorama Mesdag Step into the largest painting in the Netherlands and travel back in time to Scheveningen as it was in 1881. Look 360° around and experience this magical optical illusion created by H.W. Mesdag.
The Pier The famous Pier in Scheveningen is an icon on the Dutch coast. Visitors can fully enjoy an elaborate range of food, drinks and shopping concepts in a historical location, combined with the sun, sea and beach. One of the Pier’s latest tourist attractions is a Ferris wheel constructed
Absolute must see and do over the sea. The ferris wheel is over fifty meters high and has 36 closed gondolas with a glass bottom. From the Ferris wheel, visitors have a panoramic view of the sea, the beach and The Hague’s skyline.
Escher in Het Paleis Escher in Het Paleis displays a permanent exhibition of the world-famous, dreamlike visions of artist M.C. Escher and is housed in the former winter palace of Queen Emma.
Prince’s Day Prince’s Day represents the start of the new parliamentary year. Every third Tuesday in September at the stroke of one, the King and Queen, accompanied by other members of the Royal House, leave Noordeinde Palace in the Glass Carriage for the Binnenhof, escorted by court dignitaries and a military escort of honour.
Binnenhof Step through the famous entry gate at the historical Binnenhof into the heart of the democracy. This is where the most important events in the nation’s history took place and the future is created. Entrance to the Inner Court is free of charge and open to public.
Gemeentemuseum Den Haag With 35 exhibitions each year, and the greatest Mondrian and Delft Blue pottery collection worldwide, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag is a must visit during your stay in Holland.
Louwman Museum The Louwman Museum is home to the world’s oldest private collection of motor cars. The collection dates back to 1934 and comprises over 250 antique and classic motor cars.
Palace Noordeinde Palace Noordeinde, with its ornamental garden design, is located on Noordeinde, one of the most elegant shopping streets in The Hague. This is where King Willem-Alexander works and, if he is present, the flag flies above the palace. Concealed between Noordeinde Palace, the Royal Stables and the Royal Archives are the Palace Gardens. Although open to the public, they are little known to the general public
Madurodam Miniature theme park Madurodam in The Hague is the ultimate place to discover within a short period of time what makes Holland so unique. Canal houses, tulip fields, a cheese market, a wooden shoes factory, windmills, the Peace Palace, the Delta Works: you will find them all in Madurodam.

New in The Hague Climb the 288 steps to the tower of the Great Church Climb to the tower of the Great Church, also known as the ‘Haagse Toren’. Together with a guide, visitors can climb the 288 steps to the top. The tower offers a spectacular 360° view over the city centre, Scheveningen and Kijkduin. Along with the Inner Court, the Great Church is one of the oldest buildings in The Hague. There is a tour every Saturday and Sunday at 13.00 and 15.00 hours.

Museum Voorlinden Voorlinden, a museum for modern and contemporary art, is situated on a beautiful country estate among the dunes at Wassenaar. A number of artworks are on permanent display. James Turrell designed 'Skyspace' especially for the museum. The space has a square hole in the roof, which enables the viewer to gaze directly upwards and see the sky as never before. Another permanent work is ‘Open Ended’ by Richard Serra and the illusory ‘Swimming Pool’ by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich.

Shopping in The Hague
The city centre is perfect for a day of shopping
22
The charming, historical city centre is perfect for a day of shopping. The shopping centre around Spuistraat and Grote Marktstraat enjoys an abundance of shoppers, 24/7. New stores in city centre is Hudson’s Bay Topshop. Several minutes away from this area of the city centre with its major (fashion) and other types of chain stores, such as the Bijenkorf, a surprising part of The Hague awaits: original and trendy stores abound in the old, atmospheric Hofkwartier, from hip to classic and design to retro. Although the luxury shopping street Noordeinde is also home to the working palace of King Willem-Alexander, inhabitants of The Hague are familiar with ‘chic’ primarily due to its distinctive fashion boutiques, galleries, antiques and art dealers. Hidden in the historical Hofkwartier, behind the Grote Kerk, is Prinsestraat. This is where the trendy Hague set makes its mark with hip fashion and accessories stores, design stores and art galleries.
Shopping & Dining To find a unique collection of antique furniture, clocks, paintings and decorative objects, visit one of the oldest streets in The Hague: the Denneweg. Shopping in The Hague Passage - the Netherlands’ oldest shopping centre, in existence for over 115 years - is an experience in itself. With its beautiful architecture, the Passage radiates an unmistakeable atmosphere that is seldom found in modern shopping malls.
Wining & Dining Restaurants in The Hague mix trendy and authentic with a diversity of world cuisine. Both the city centre and Scheveningen offer a wealth of choice that appeals to all tastes and all budgets. As city by the sea, The Hague is renowned for its delicious seafood. For a sunset dinner, Scheveningen harbour offers a dynamic backdrop for an atmospheric stroll and delicious intermezzos.

Eating and drinking in The Hague means enjoyment alongside historic canals, on squares, terraces on boats, from homely, smooth lines and minimalism to Old Dutch conviviality. The ever-expanding gastronomic scene is based around the city centre. In The Hague, most restaurants combine an informal atmosphere with high-quality cuisine. The Indonesian culture can still be sampled with a wide range of restaurants serving elaborate rice tables in typical colonial atmosphere. Looking for a taste of Asia? Chinatown is a must for anyone wanting something different for a change. The Hague boasts numerous food festivals and events all year round. From Flag’s Day at Scheveningen Harbour and the Tong Tong Fair in The Hague’s city centre to trendy little food truck events in parks and at the beach.

• Until 14 January 2018 Southern neighbours Portraits from Flanders 1400-1700
photo: Mauritshuis
Beautiful portraits were painted in the Southern Netherlands between 1400 and 1700. Noubles and wealthy citizens enjoyed being immortalised on canvas by the best Flemish artists of their day. These portraits are still highly impressive.
• 15 February - 13 May 2018 Historical Paintings by Jan Steen Meet Jan Steen as you probably didn’t know him before. This seventeenth century Dutch artist is mainly known as the painter of jolly and somewhat chaotic scenes from daily. But the artist also depicted entirely different subjects: paintings showing stories from the Bible, classical mythology, and history. Through a selection of roughly twenty paintings, the exhibition shows that Steen was a versatile and ambitious artist.

Located in the west of the Netherlands, The Hague is easily accessible by air, train and road. Rotterdam is less than 30 kilometres away, Amsterdam about 60 kilometres. All major attractions, such as the Keukenhof, are also in close proximity of the city.
The Hague boasts an excellent public transport network. Over 30 bus and tram lines will quickly and safely take you to your destination in The Hague and the beach areas, Scheveningen and Kijkduin. www.9292ov.nl.
The Hague can be reached in a variety of ways. There are two major international airports within 30 minutes and the city boasts two international and well-equipped railway stations. The city as well as the tourist attractions are easy accessible from all other major cities, both national and international.
Tour bus
By plane The international Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam-The Hague Airport are both within 45 minutes reach. These airports connect the city to over 300 destinations worldwide.
By train There are two international railway stations in The Hague: The Hague Central Station and The Hague Hollands Spoor. Trains from Hollands Spoor leave for Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Belgium and France. Trains for Utrecht and Germany leave from The Hague Central Station. Both train stations operate a direct service to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
By coach Coaches are always welcome in The Hague. That’s why we’ve made some special arrangements to guarantee good accessibility for coaches to the city centre, the seaside resorts and various attractions and museums.
Once in the city, it is easy to get around and take your guests to their destination. You’ll also have no problems finding free or paid parking places for your tour bus. Both Scheveningen and the city centre have free parking facilities for tour busses.
Parking for coaches There are several parking spaces for coaches throughout the city. For long-term parking there are two points situated close to some tourist attractions. The first one is at Prinsessegracht in the city centre. The other one is at Zwarte Pad in The Hague’s beach resort Scheveningen. These and the other parking facilities are indicated on the tour bus map which you can download from: www.thehaguetraveltrade.com.
On foot Getting about on foot is easy. The entire city, from the centre all the way to the beach, can be traversed in under an hour. Over one third of the city is covered with greenery: forests and parks as well as some 70,000 roadside trees.
Taxis Special night rates do not apply in The Hague. It is often possible to hail a taxi in the street, but you can also find special taxi stands at the railway stations and various points throughout the city. You can, of course, reliably order a taxi by telephone too.
