Design For Disability
Lacoste Competition
I completed my 2nd Year placement with branding agency Siegel + Gale in New York City. I worked with several global clients such as CVS, American Express and Blue Origin. Working as part of the design team; I conducted brand audits, worked on brand strategy, simplification and logo design.
moatti - rivière Architectural work experience with Moatti-Rivière in Paris. I assisted head architect Alain Moatti on the renovation and refurbishment of the Eiffel Tower’s first floor. I helped with roof design and created a company portfolio using InDesign.
Everyday objects are not designed with disabilities taken into consideration. Our task was to design a product for sufferers of osteoarthritis.
THE PROBLEM Sufferers of arthritis having difficulties removing plugs from the socket.
HANDS Almost 90% of women and 80% of men ages 75-79 show x-ray evidence of osteoarthritis (arthritis of the joints) in their hands. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is most cases of it are found in the hands.
TESTING The natural way to pull a plug out of a socket is a pinch grip. The pinch grip puts most stress on the wrist and the thumb joint. The removal of plugs creates a harsh angle between the hand and the wrist. Most plugs come out of the wall at a 90째 angle which creates an awkward position for the wrist. The testing showed that our design needed to: - Alleviate the stress from the pinch grip - Improve wrist to hand angle
Concept I Leverage arm rotates a full 360 degrees, snapping into place at 90 degree intervals.
Concept II Adapter is angled at an appropriate level so user can remove plug without having to bend their wrist as much.
Final Concept Developed angled adapter which incorporates a push face which removes the need for the high stress pinch grip.
KEY FEATURES: 1. Angled adapter to relieve stress on the wrist of the user 2. Push face which ejects the adapter from the wall 3. An ergonomic grip under the adapter 4. LED light to show when adapter is on or off
Non-Literal Form A product that has no prescribed function, but which consciously manipulates how an electronic product can be perceived.

Piste of Mind The Smart Ski Pass
Ski pass holder that uses GPS and virtual leashing to enable ski schools to be safer and more efficient.
Insights
Skiing can be dangerous, 3,000 people in Austria were injured in 2012 alone!
Ski lessons are very expensive, On average a week of lessons costs ÂŁ400!
Time is spent during every ski lesson making sure everyone is safe and together
Virtual leashing technology allows you to keep people or objects near by
Can this valuable time be used better?
Piste of Mind
- Smart ski pass holder with GPS tracking, virtual leashing and induction charging. - Links with an app through a QR Code. - For ski schools to use during lessons. Would allow instructors and parents to have peace of mind. - Quantifies the skiing experience. Tracks speed, distance travelled, height climbed and calories burned - Can be rented from the ski school or bought for personal use.

Winners of the Lacoste competition run by Pentland Brands. The task was to design a casual shoe for Office UK.
The Oleofilter Live project with Northumbrian Water. Retrofit filter which catches fats, oil, grease and food that have been put down the sink and issues a behavioural change to the user.
75%
of all blockages caused by fat, oil and grease
Why do people put fat down the sink?
Convenience IgnorancE Accidental NO Personal Responsibility No good Incentives
The Oleofilter A retrofit filter which catches fat, oil, grease and food using an oleophilic membrane. When the filter is saturated it changes colour, which can be seen through the clear casing, and disposal of the filter is easy with a quick release system. The filter is integral to sink functionality which is key for encouraging a behavioural change.
