Natural History

Predators Birds, lizards, mantids, spiders, and rodents eat grasshoppers. Food Many species of grasshoppers are general herbivores feeding on a variety of plants. Some species only like grasses.

Impact on the Ecosystem

Positive As herbivores, grasshoppers link plants to the rest of the ecosystem. Frass (droppings) contribute to nutrient turnover by returning nutrients as fertilizer for the plants. They provide food for birds and other arthropods. Negative Sometimes some species of grasshopper occur in very large numbers and cause serious crop damage and loss of plants in pastures. Where to find Grasshoppers are around in the spring and summer, but are most noticeable in the autumn. Areas with many grasses, small "vacant" lots and gardens are good places to start looking. Look at the area as you walk through. If you can hear the plants moving as you walk there are most likely grasshoppers around. Look during the middle of the day for best results. At night, use a flashlight to find grasshoppers roosting on the leaves. In the summer and autumn, some grasshoppers fly into porch lights.

Black History In a South Carolina prison sixty-six years ago, guards walked a 14-year-old boy, bible tucked under his arm, to the electric chair. At 5’ 1” and 95 pounds, the straps didn’t fit, and an electrode was too big for his leg. The switch was pulled and the adult sized death mask fell from George Stinney’s face. Tears streamed from his eyes. Witnesses recoiled in horror as they watched the youngest person executed in the United States in the past century die.

[b. 1929 - d. 1944] Now, a community activist is fighting to clear Stinney’s name, saying the young boy couldn’t have killed two girls. George Frierson, a school board member and textile inspector, believes Stinney’s confession was coerced, and that his execution was just another injustice blacks suffered in Southern courtrooms in the first half of the 1900s. In the Stinney case, supporters want the state to admit that officials executed the wrong person in June 1944. Stinney was accused of killing two white girls, 11 year old Betty June Binnicker and 8 year old Mary Emma Thames, by beating them with a railroad spike then dragging their bodies to a ditch near Acolu, about five miles from Manning in central South Carolina. The girls were found a day after they disappeared following a massive manhunt. Stinney was arrested a few hours later, white men in suits taking him away. Because of the risk of a lynching, Stinney was kept at a jail 50 miles away in Columbia. The sheriff at the time said Stinney admitted to the killings, but there is only his word — no written record of the confession has been found. No one challenged the sheriff’s recollection of the confession. The court appointed Stinney an attorney — a tax commissioner preparing for a Statehouse run. In all, the trial — from jury selection to a sentence of death — lasted one day. Records indicate 1,000 people crammed the courthouse. Blacks weren’t allowed inside. “As an attorney, it just kind of haunted me, just the way the judicial system worked to this boy’s disadvantage or disfavor. It did not protect him,” said McKenzie, who is preparing court papers to ask a judge to reopen the case.

Consciously Speaking

Know Your Limit : Knowing your limit is the realization that you have no limits. Limited access is an access not worth having. We as a people are already restricted by so much throughout society. Notice our "American Rights", limited to the 1st Amendment. Limitations restricts freedom. Rebellion steams from the root of restrictions which causes conflict. Why must we have a limit? For focus? For concentration? For control. These limits and restrictions were put into place by the babylon system to confine our minds into these little boxes while hindering our soul and spirit from growth. The more we know, the less power babylon will have. We can not let the system restrict, lock or control us. Do no let the system limit your access to the freedom we are promised in Christ (Galatians 5:1). If we have increased knowledge on subject matter the education administration fail to teach us the system will crash, crumble and fall like it has already before. Jah Rasta man promotes emancipation of your mind. Do not hold back the truth in which you speak. Never imprison yourself! The sky is not the limit! These four walls are not a limit. Open the door to freedom, be free. Fuck a limit. In a free society, there are no limits. No skin color, religious practice, age, sex orientation, or education can limit an anti-bondage people. Be Free. Step out of the trap and vercome the captivities of an impartial society. Speak Out.

Artist Spotlight Peter Tosh was born Winston Hubert McIntosh on October 19, 1944 in Grange Hill, Jamaica. Raised by his aunt, he left home in his early teens and headed for the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, known as Trenchtown. Like many of his fellow young aspiring musicians, he found his way to Joe Higgs, a local musician who offered free music lessons to youth. It was through Joe Higgs that Peter Tosh met his future fellow bandmates, Bob "To h Marley and Bunny Wailer. a Legalize It - 1976 Mystic M No Nucle an - 1979 ar War 1987

ve th e tru your th in poss e s can b sion you e sente found gui lt n c ed to de y, ath.

"

Peter Tosh continued to record international hit records for the rest of the 1970s and early 1980s, and never relaxed his intense message of revolution. After a live concert release in 1984, Peter Tosh took a few years off, and his 1987 comeback record No Nuclear War was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Peter Tosh was known as a sarcastic and slightly angry man. Peter Tosh saw himself as a revolutionary, and was vehement in his efforts to tear down "Babylon." He coined his own words for many of the things which he hated, including "politricks" for politics, "s**tstem" for system, and "Crime Ministers" for Prime Ministers. It was this attitude that earned him the nickname "Steppin' Razor."
