David Nesta "Ziggy" Marley
Ziggy
The oldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley and his wife Rita, Ziggy Marley was the natural heir to the throne left vacant by his father's untimely 1981 death. Along with backing band the Melody Makers, a unit comprised of his brothers and sisters, he successfully carried on the tradition of communicating the music's message to a growing global audience, even scoring a U.S. Top 40 single in the process -- a claim neither of his parents could make. Born David Marley in Kingston, Jamaica on October 17, 1968, he received guitar and drum lessons from his father, and began sitting in on Wailers recording sessions at the age of ten. In 1979, Ziggy, his sister Cedella, brother Stephen, and half-sister Sharon all joined Bob in the studio to record the single "Children Playing in the Streets." Christened the Melody Makers, the four siblings continued playing together at family events, and even performed at their father's state funeral. Marley was not even 17 when he and the Melody Makers issued their EMI debut LP, Play the Game Right. The burdens of becoming a second-generation star weighed heavily on the youth -- who looked and sounded almost eerily like his father -- and he allowed the record and its 1986 follow-up, Hey World!, to veer closely towards pop music, resulting in derision from reggae purists. Poor sales, combined with EMI's public desire to market Marley as a solo act, prompted the band to jump to the Virgin label, where they entered the studio to record their masterpiece, 1988's Conscious Party. Produced by Talking Heads' Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, the album was both a critical and commercial smash, with the single "Tomorrow People" reaching number 39 on the pop charts. The follow-up, 1989's One Bright Day, continued the Melody Makers' artistic growth; it was also their best-selling effort to date, cracking the Top 20 and, like its predecessor, winning a Grammy. Marley & the Melody Makers resurfaced in 1991 with Jahmekya, another assured and creative effort. It sold well, edging into the Top 20, but failed to generate much radio or video airplay. 1993's Joy and Blues barely charted, despite adding elements of contemporary dancehall (a showcase for Stephen's rapping skills). The latter record was the Melody Makers' last release for Virgin, and they moved to Elektra for 1995's Free Like We Want 2 B. Fallen Is Babylon followed in 1997, and scored a third Grammy. Like his father, Marley eventually emerged as a leading political voice, and was named a Goodwill Youth Ambassador for the United Nations; at home in Kingston, he also founded his own record label, Ghetto Youth United, created to spotlight the next generation of reggae talent. In addition to the four siblings in the Melody Makers, three other Marley children -- Damian, Julian, and Ky-Mani -- also pursued careers in music. The music continued well into the new millennium, as Marley released Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers Live, Vol. 1 in fall 2000 and continued issuing albums during that decade. Stephen "Raggamuffin" Marley
Bob Marley's second son, Stephen Marley, first appeared on record in 1979, when he was only six years old. With his brother Ziggy, the young Stephen recorded the single "Children Playing in the Streets," a charity single with the profits going to the United Nations to aid its efforts during the International Year of the Child. The single would also mark the beginnings of the Ziggy-fronted Melody Makers, a band that included Stephen's other siblings. Stephen played a supportive role in the Melody Makers from the beginning as guitarist, singer, and occasional songwriter. To satisfy his creative interests outside the group, Stephen decided to become familiar with the music industry from behind the scenes. Production work began in 1996 with Stephen contributing ideas to albums by his brothers Damian and Julian. Remixing the Fugees the same year was the first public display of Stephen's love of hip-hop and R&B. Work with Eve, Krayzie Bone, and Erykah Badu would follow along with a new role as "executive producer" of the Bob Marley remix compilation Chant Down Babylon, released in 1999. The album drew criticism from reggae purists who thought Stephen's mixing of hip-hop and his father's music was blasphemy, but the album's success encouraged the young producer. In 2001, his production work for brother Damian's Halfway Tree helped win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album, while Stephen's version of "Master Blaster" landed on the Stevie Wonder tribute Conception the same year. Work began on a debut solo album, but the 2002 formation of production house/promotion firm Ghetto Youths International with brother Ziggy kept Stephen from finishing it. Work on brother Damian's successful 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock pushed his debut all the way back to 2007. It was March of that year when Mind Control finally landed. An acoustic version of the album, simply titled Mind Control Acoustic, was distributed exclusively online in 2008 with the physical CD following in 2009. David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Ghetto Youths
Ghetto Youths "
Our mission is to improve the lives of disadvantaged and minority youths both here and abroad by educating and assisting this population with the ultimate goal to reduce poverty, social, family disorder and alienation that this group feels on a daily basis."
Ghetto Youths Foundation was founded by the Marley Brothers to help underprivileged youths who fight the struggle to survive. Ghetto Youths Foundation, Inc. was organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Research has shown that many ghetto youths are not literate yet are quite articulate and capable of reasoning. Some are also quite gifted. They know their identity but the limited successes and resources for those young people result from many problems including the background of families, the neighborhoods where they live and peer pressure.

Tuff Gong
The Tuff Gong label was founded in 1965 by Bob Marley, with the vision of producing, distributing and promoting his music free from the constraints of corporate label politics. In a time decades before artist-owned record labels were commonplace, the legendary Bob Marley’s vision was characteristically well ahead of its time. Now, nearly a half-century later, his dream is being realized. With Tuff Gong Worldwide, Ziggy Marley continues a dream of his father to own and manage not only his own music, but nearly every aspect of his career. From record label operations to book publishing, Ziggy not only records and releases all of his recent solo studio albums and DVDs via Tuff Gong Worldwide (including the Grammy-winning albums Love Is My Religion and Family Time, and the new release Wild and Free), but also has become a major player in the comic book / graphic novel industry with the release of the MarijuanaMan series. With such distribution partners as Image Comics, Entertainment One in the U.S. and Canada and a variety of distributors and label imprints around the world, Tuff Gong Worldwide's reach has become, indeed, a global phenomenon. Most recently, Tuff Gong Worldwide has expanded beyond consumer products and into the world of television with Marley Africa Road Trip (Elixir Films). Even more new developments will be announced in 2012. Since its inception in 2005, Tuff Gong Worldwide has established itself as a leader in the reggae community. Having consulted on such projects as The Disney Reggae Club (Walt Disney Records) and MARLEY (Shangri-La Entertainment), the company has become a sought-after expert in tapping into reggae culture. With unprecedented access to reggae creatives (artists, musicians, songwriters, etc.), Caribbean media (radio, online, press), and other promotional outlets, Tuff Gong Worldwide finds itself at the center of reggae culture in North America, the Caribbean, and beyond. Tuff Gong also produce mens, women's and infant clothing, including a host of other cool stuff.

Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley
Junior Gong Damian Marley was only two when his father died, but the youngest of the Marley sons must have learned something. "Junior Gong" was born July, 21 1978 in Kingston, Jamaica. At the age of 13, he formed his first band, the Shepherds, which also included the son of Third World's Cat Coore and the daughter of Freddie McGregor; the group even opened up the 1992 Reggae Sunsplash festival. By 1994, Damian was working on his own solo project, and with the help of his father's label, Tuff Gong, he recorded Mr. Marley. Also lending a familiar air to the sessions was the presence of Stephen Marley, who produced and co-wrote several songs for the LP. Halfway Tree from 2001 earned a Grammy nomination, but the public generally overlooked the ambitious album. Not so for the reggae-meets-hip-hop single "Welcome to Jamrock," which became an urban phenomenon soon after its summer 2005 release. Street-level mixtapes began featuring it, urban radio couldn't get enough of it, and remixes -- both legal and not so legal -- began appearing at a fast pace. The well-rounded album Welcome to Jamrock delivered on the promise of the single that same year, reaching the Top Ten. John Bush, All Music Guide

The Melody Makers
Heavy words like heritage and legacy are often used when the subject is Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. As Bob Marley's children, the band will always be associated with their father's towering presence as both a musician and cultural icon. And this is how it should be. To resist this association would be to deny the musical and spiritual blessings and heritage that have flowed from Bob to his children in what has truly been an extraordinary natural progression.
The Melody Makers are building upon the foundation I and I father started. They have forged a sound all their own, incorporating international contemporary musical forms without losing an essential roots reggae sensibility. As Ziggy has said, "Bob stuff is unique. Melody stuff is unique." Since their debut as young teenagers until their present incarnation as a seasoned and highly professional band there has been one constant: great songs. From "Tomorrow People" and "Tumblin' Down"to "Everyone Wants To Be", the hits keep coming from what is still a relatively young group of musicians. After eight acclaimed albums, two Grammy awards and sold-out concerts before tens of thousands, the Marley magic continues to spread. Perhaps it is because this is peoples and their history, but the message-music. Ziggy and his music doesn't carry a message of siblings live in a different time from exclusion or retribution. And as their father, and this reality is they comment on the human reflected in their work. Without struggle and problems and preaching or proselytizing, the tribulations that face us all, the Melody Makers sing about the Melody Makers never lose sight of world as they see it and as it could the fact that music is a celebration. be. Film: Discovering Rasta
Donisha’s film odyssey, therefore, is both personal and historical, as she balances revelations about Rastafari with her own self-discovery. The film stays focused on Donisha—as a Rasta woman, as a young convert—as she personally discusses and experiences first hand the ways in which this movement has spread around the world. Her questions, her knowledge informs the narrative, and her vibrant and inquisitive personality drives the fast-paced and youthful nature of the film. The aim of the film is bring the issues and message of Rastafari into a contemporary context, illustrating how the acceptance of Rasta in Canada is in mark contrast to other cultures. Mixing rare archive footage, driven by the infectious rhythm of the music, told through interviews and interactions of Donisha with elders, with young converts, looking for connections and traditions rooted in the past, and the beliefs of a movement dedicated to living in the present. RasTa is filled with archival history, and brought to life through Donisha’s passion for knowledge and charismatic personality, as she takes us up close and personal with people and places that will help unlock the mysteries of this movement, pull back the veil of misunderstanding and allow all of us to share the journey and the knowledge of a young women in pursuit of personal truth and contemporary relevance. Their objective is to empower the youth and expose them to the arts as an option, instead of crime to earn a living. Targeting the inner city communities, they have held workshops in Greenwich Town and August Town and hope to take the program further afield to the countryside. This project by Manifesto Jamaica is commendable, as it provides new ways for would-be artists to try out their performance skills and make new fans. Hopefully the ambitious objectives will bear fruit for the many performers taking advantage of this unique opportunity. The music industry needs this breath of fresh air. 29

Artist Spotlight: The Marley Brothers As a fan, artist and lover of reggae music, individuality and having your own voice is important. During hours of playback of their works, I examined what each Marley son has to offer and what makes their music personal. Collectively these talented brothers speak on justice, peace, powering our minds, legalization of marijuana, repression, the teachings of His Imperial Majesty with their own freespirit. No matter your own particular taste, I and I am sure you will find deep likings to the sounds of positive vibrations. Ziggy Marley is a happy rastaman known for chanting down babylon. He sets the record straight on just how corrupt the system of babylon is. Ziggy, like his father shouts for freedom, marijuana and unity for the people. Ziggy's sound is distinct because his music is vibrant, colorful and clear. Ziggy reminds us "there is a rainbow in the sky all the time" and to never be blind to the events of reality. Rastaman, set the people free. You can always anticipate Stephen Marley to sing about relationships and romance. Stephen has always been know to me as having a huge voice of love when it comes to topics of being loved or being in love. His vocals are lovely always, fierce, matching the flavor of having compassion on the track. His albums are evenly soothing and refreshing. One Love. Julian Marley is so mellow like the color yellow. He gives love and promotes strength through his tunes. His music makes me want to be strong like an Iron Lion in Zion! We like him because he is all about di youth them, being aware and helping somebody out. His melodies prophesize knowledge and wisdom. We Digg.
Ky-Mani Marley is know mostly for his struggle in the hood and his life experience in the ghetto, this is the foundation of his music. KyMani is hardcore, he lets us know he is a city boy and has no time for pussyclotin'. He has a soldier mentality and puts no faith in politicians. His music influence us to hold ourselves down, represent Jah and to hustle to survive. Ghetto Loving. Now, Damian Marley has always been a huge advocate of being consciously aware. He shines a bright light on issues of non violence and peace like his older brothers with his militant mentality. He reminds us on just how crazy and evil people in the world can be so his music is easy to vibe and get-a-long to. Jr. Gong has a hip-hop vibe to his reggae soul so his raps and chants are pure truth and thought provoking. Black, Green, Yellow/Gold Pride.

Travel: Marley Resort & Spa
OUR LUXURIOUS 16 THEMED SUITES AND LUXURY ACCOMMODATIONS BLEND THE WARMTH OF MARLEY HISTORY WITH ULTIMATE COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE. SERVICE IS UNPARALLELED. AMID NASSAU'S ATMOSPHERE OF RELAXED AND ARTFUL LIVING, MARLEY RESORT & SPA IS A TRUE HAVEN FOR TRAVELERS. SPANNING PAST AND PRESENT, ITS ACCOMMODATIONS AND AMENITIES ARE AS BEAUTIFUL AND UNUSUAL AS ITS SETTING. Marley Resort & Spa was formerly a private vacation home for the Marley family. Bob and Rita Marley discovered this former governor’s mansion on a visit to Nassau, while they were recovering from an assassination attempt in Jamaica (1976). The property’s lush gardens and oceanfront location provided a respite for the Marley children to balance with life in the mountains of Jamaica. When Rita first inquired about the property, a staff member of the previous owner warned that the house would never be sold to a Black person. Staying true to her strong character, this warning did not sway her. In 1982, Rita purchased the home, and for 16 years Rita and their children spent holidays and summer vacations together in Nassau. In 2004, they planned to renovate the home for the growing family, but once the process started, Rita decided that this retreat should be a home away from home for everyone. Marley Resort & Spa’s lion logo relates to many facets of Marley life. The lion is an important symbol used in the Rastafari religion, relating to Emperor Haile Selassie and the Lion of Judah, and has carried over to reggae music and culture. Throughout the Legend's career, the lion was referenced frequently in album art and lyrics. "Nana" Rita, the matriarch of the family and an astrological Leo, is also honored by the presence of the lioness sculpture that adorns the property. The music, the history and the way of life celebrated by the Marley family is woven into every aspect of the Marley Resort & Spa, and their influence continues in the mystical energy of the resort today. They often visit the resort for a little R&R of their own. Guests can find themselves sitting down for dinner with Rita at the next table or waking up to Ziggy strumming a song on his guitar. After all, it’s still their home, and the legend lives at Marley Resort & Spa.
WE ARE HAPPY TO SAY, THE LEGEND LIVES AT THE MARLEY RESORT & SPA. WE INVITE YOU TO COME AND EXPERIENCE THIS NOSTALGIC, MYSTICAL PIECE OF PARADISE WE ONCE CALLED HOME. COME EMBRACE THE FEELING OF ONE LOVE AND ONE HEART IN ONLY ONE PLACE. -THE MARLEY FAMILY

Rita Marley
Mother,Wife, Musician
Best known as Bob Marley's wife, Rita Marley was also a solo artist in her own right both before and after her marriage, and served as the caretaker of her husband's legacy following his premature death in 1981. Born Alpharita Anderson in Cuba, she grew up largely in the Trenchtown section of Kingston, and first sang with a female ska trio called the Soulettes. The Soulettes began recording for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One label in 1964, and Dodd asked his emerging young star Bob Marley to mentor them; Marley and Anderson fell in love and married in 1966. Rita recorded with two different Soulettes lineups in the mid-'60s, cut a few hit solo singles of her own (including "Pied Piper"), and backed the Wailers on some of their '60s recordings. When Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the Wailers in 1974, Rita helped organize the I-Threes, a female vocal trio consisting of herself, Marcia Griffiths, and Judy Mowatt. The I-Threes backed Bob Marley in the studio and on tour for the remainder of his career, up until his death from melanoma in 1981. During that time, both Marleys narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in 1976, in which one bullet grazed Rita's head and another hit Bob's arm. In 1981, as Bob succumbed to cancer, Rita recorded the solo album Who Feels It Knows It. A spiritual, life-affirming statement, the album featured a lighthearted hit single in "One Draw," a blatantly pro-marijuana lesson in proper smoking technique. Banned by the BBC, "One Draw" became the first reggae single to top Billboard's disco singles chart, which was used to track dance-club play at the time. Another single, "Play Play," had a measure of success in the U.K. However, Marley found it difficult to pursue a full-time recording career; she spent much of the '80s handling the assorted legal and business interests associated with her husband's name and estate, and also mentored her children's musical venture, Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers. She finally returned to solo recording with 1988's Harambe (Working Together for Freedom), and followed it in 1991 with We Must Carry On, which garnered a Grammy nomination. Both albums continued her knack for danceable, rootsy reggae with spiritual messages and a definite sense of fun. Marley finally returned with a new album, Rita Marley Sings Bob Marley...and Friends, in 2003. Steve Huey, Rovi

The I -Threes
I - Threes
The I - Threes were the most influential female singing group in the history of Jamaican music. A trio featuring Marcia Griffiths, Rita Marley , and Judy Mowatt, the I-Threes provided the rich harmonies for Bob Marley's performances and recordings from 1974 until his death many years later. Marcia Griffiths was already a star when the I-Threes came together. Her duet recordings with Bob Andy, which included "Young, Gifted and Black," had brought her international attention. When she invited Mowatt, who had previously sung with The Gaylettes, and Marley to harmonize with her on a recording with Andy, she set the stage for the trio's formation. The recording session proved so inspiring that she invited the two women to be guests on a song that she and Andy were scheduled to perform that evening at the House of Chen in New Kingston. Shortly after the departure of Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston from The Wailers, Bob Marley asked the three women to sing on his recording, Jah Live. They continued to work together for the next ten years. In early 1975, the IThrees joined Marley for a tour as opening act for The Jackson Five. Although they continued to perform together following Marley's death, the three women soon elected to pursue solo careers. Craig Harris, Rovi

Holy Bible
SELAH - [se'lah] --- This word occurs 71 times in the Book of Psalms. Scholars agree that the term is a musical direction of some sort, but they are not agreed on what the direction is. It may mean: (1) an interlude --- a pause in the singing while the orchestra continues; (2) the equivalent of today's "Amen"; as such it would separate psalms or sections of psalms which have different liturgical purposes; and (3) an acrostic that means" a change of voices" or "repeat".
