Music & Poems

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. Every single one of the records on Legend is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.

In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD, and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides a highly satisfying, if brief, overview of Marley's genius. A record well suited to any location, season, or time of day, it has proven universal in its appeal. The music herein is as essential as air.

Recorded between 1972 and 1981. Originally released on Island.

The band came to an end with the death of Bob Marley in 1981.They were known variously as The Teenagers, The Wailing Rudeboys, The Wailing Wailers and finally The Wailers. The Wailers disbanded in 1974 due to Tosh and Livingston's refusal to tour. Rasta, Prophecy, Conspiracy

In July 1977, Robert Nesta Marley was found to have malignant melanoma due to a "football injury" on his right hallux (big toe). Marley refused amputation, knowing that the operation would affect his dancing as well as the Rastafarian belief that the body must be "whole". On May 11, 1981, as the world knows, Marley died from a brain tumor that was the result of cancer that had wracked his body since 1977. Keeping in mind a year earlier, before he was diagnosed with cancer in 1976, seven gunmen, "the death squad", surrounded the grounds of Marley's home in Kingston, Jamaica attempting to assassinate the reggae star and other members of his band, including his wife and manager. Miraculously after a shower of bullets, fortunately there were no fatalities. Former Black Panther cinematographer and director Lee Lew-Lee casts a very different light on the singers illness. Lew-Lee was close friends with members of the Wailers and was camped out with Marley and his band in the peaks of the Blue Mountains near Kingston. The band was preparing to perform at the Smile Jamaica Festival. Bob Marley and The Wailers were in hiding before the concert after the nasty run-in with a death squad at Marley's house 1976. The encampment in the Blue Mountains was armed and surrounded by machete wielding Rastafari. Understandably, any white face that were to appear in this place would have been quite conspicuous. Yet a white face did show up at the compound, Carl Colby, the son of former CIA director, William Colby. Colby claimed to be a camera-man with the film crew that was there for the concert, yet he never carried a camera and he came bearing a gift for Marley: a pair of boots. Lew-Lee recounts the events: "People came by his house. There were always people going in and out. Someone gave Bob a pair of boots. He put his foot in and said "Ow! A friend got in there" - you know how Jamaicans are. He said,"let's get in here" - in the boot, and he pulled a piece of copper wire out. It was embedded in the boot. Now, we are suspicions that the wire was radioactive and planted inside the boot to harm Bob Marley. Due to the fact that Marley later broke his toe playing soccer the wire planted in his boot given to him by Colby is now evident that the wire was in fact, hazardous to Marley's health, contributing to his death. When the bone wouldn't mend, the doctors found that the toe had

Rasta, Prophecy, Conspiracy cancer. The cancer metastasized throughout his body". Don Taylor, Bob Marley's manager stated that a "senior CIA agent" had been planted among the crew and that an assassination was the objective. When Marley was diagnosed with cancer, he returned to Jamaica where he was referred to Dr. Carl "Pee Wee" Fraser. Fraser advised Marley to seek treatment from a Dr. Josef Issels in Bavaria. Issels has an interesting past. "He was tortured toward the end of his life, the last 6 months of his life he was in the hands of a Nazi doctor. In fact, Dr. Issells, who was supposedly treating Marley may have saved his life if he was a legitimate doctor, was in fact starving him and shoving long needles through his body, having nothing to do with the treatment of his cancer. This is the behavior of an SS officer, and that's what the doctor was." It is clear to see that his death was a conspiracy by the babylon system to destroy the black man. Bob Marley was a revolutionary standing up for peace, justice and love. He was a threat to the entire babylon system that is the white man. Their first attempt to take his life with bullets was unsuccessful but it did not stop them from harming him internally. He was tortured at the time when babylon had a chance to get it right and aid him to recovery. Babylon intentionally set up Bob Marley to take his prophetic mind. He was murdered by the forces of darkness. No coincidence. Right On.

ONE LOVE

Issels, then 72, specialized in helping “hopeless” cancer sufferers. At one point the Bavarian Medical Council charged Issels with fraud and manslaughter, but he was acquitted after a four-year legal battle. He’s pictured above with Bob’s mother Cedella. A gaunt Marley shares the couch with an unidentified friend.
